Snoozie - I have tried and tried to like spaghetti squash. It's just not for me. I hope the recipe works out for you! If it's a winner then let us know...I can always try it again!1
-
lmao @ suzy...
but first yes i totally agree its habit from childhood.. and many decades after !! and yes those starving kids were always held in reserve at ours too in case plates weren't emptied!
and i know exactly what you mean about finishing the plate whether im hungry or not.. in fact im sure that's a habit too... i KNOW it doesn't take a full plate piled with food to satiate my hunger... but if it's there.. its still in my mouth til it's all gone
A big part of the diabetes stuff is eating meals of the same size and same portion(ing).. which i'll admit is helping a bit as i get more used to it... i try to think of dinner being the same size as my lunch, but mentally it still makes me feel "deprived" i think.. even before i start eating .. how silly is that?? its not like i can't have more if i need it.. but the needs and wants are the angel and devil on my shoulders lol.
I am also trying to up the water; i am adding some crystal light to every OTHER water bottle.. to help me drink more.... i know its not the best choice but if it helps me get an extra bottle in i'll take it. its kinda a reward system again.. if i drink a bottle of plain water i can have some flavoured one. sigh.. im like one of Pavlov's dogs i guess!
Kudos to you for dealing with the frustration of not losing Suzy..... when i first came here it was 5 weeks before i started losing anything at all... and i was ready to pack it in. I kept flipping from method to mtheod back then.. trying "eat more to lose more" "CICO" etc.. but i remember how incredibly frustrated i was so im really proud of you for hanging in and changing things up with the movement aspect... well done you!!! You must be getting excited about the hiking trip!!!! the lmao was about hearing your screams in Canada.. I have faith i will be hearing your cheers instead !!
p.s. re the squash... i love butternut and acorn squash but weirdly I've never tried spagethi squash.. im assuming i'll like it but will let ya know! I did make a drumstick recipe from there with honey and soy sauce that was awesome so here's hoping lol1 -
I'm following your progress with meals of the same size with interest. I think there are a number of reasons why I have the biggest meal (by far) in the evening, but what you mentioned about feeling deprived really struck a chord with me - I always tend to "save the best for last", and I have all day to look forward to the evening meal, and I really enjoy it! I don't think you're silly at all.
Suzy, SO frustrating with the lack of weight loss. I feel your pain! It's annoying when you put the effort in and then feel you might as well not have bothered! But of course, if you didn't bother you'd maybe have gained (at least you would if you were me!), so the work and deprivation hasn't been for nothing. Good luck with the hike! That's go to be good for the soul, whether it results in weight loss or not!2 -
I'm exactly the same Vail.. in the saving the best.. I could "pick" during the day knowing dinner was going to be the biggie.. which when I think about it logically I realize I could literally eat all day if I wanted.. i would never have to be deprived and nothing says I have to have the "bige one" just at dinner.. but.. after 55 years of doing just exactly that, i'm sure it's totally the emotionally based reaction for me. Hence why i'm struggling. I've actually plated a dinner once.. realized it was HUGE compared to what I had for lunch lol... and put 1/2 of it away .... there was still way more than I needed on my plate to fill me up... but did I go back and dig out the rest and eat it anyway? yes I did.. cause that was MY DINNER. sigh.... but im making progress now lol... it wont be perfect everytime but if I can go from 3 creams and 3 sugars in my coffee (just the thought of which makes me gag now, but at one time I thought I would DIE if I couldn't have my coffee that way LOL) THEN I know I can change how I eat as well. baby steps....
suzy.. btw.. that cheering I expect to hear? is when you decide to celebrate the weight you saw gone but won't claim yet...1 -
p.s. suzy? the joy of being all grown up.. is we no longer HAVE to eat anything we don't like LOL.. so girl if squash doesn't do it for ya, consider it gone! The way I see it there are loads of things good for us to choose from, and I personally will never let quinoa pass my lips again... and I don't HAVE TO!! LOL soooooo rock on!1
-
You're so right Snoozie. Forget the darn spaghetti squash!!! I'm thinking about switching to smaller dinner plates to help with the whole huge dinner problem. I really think it's mostly psychological. But most of my weight issues are psychological! Ha!1
-
Good thing I didn't record that weight loss yesterday. Today I was back up that pound and a half. I know that weight can fluctuate that much several times a day but....come on!!!! Is a one pound loss too much to ask in a dang month?!?!?!!! I'm so frustrated that I feel like binging on chocolate, pizza and alcohol. But I won't. No...I won't. I've got to stick with the plan. Aaaaaarrrrgggghhhhhh!!0
-
oh suzy.... I feel so bad for you because you're working so dang hard ..... and I completely agree that its simply fluctuations, I know hearing that won't help at all right now!!
My scales are showing up as well even though I know I've been eating well .... they say misery loves company so I just thought i'd share that to make you feel better... ? hmmm ya it wouldn't make me feel any better either..
so... ok..... the only thing I got is... if you're feeling pissed at the world (which would be me) go with the "screw you" attitude towards the choc pizza and booze... by which I mean say to yourself no way are YOU gonna win yu little buggers.... I WILL WIN!!! MAYBE for today... go with your water goal only.. push it to the max and see if the woosh factor kicks in within the next few days... I bet it will!! You're doing all the right stuff and i wish there was more we could do.. just know we're all here and pulling for ya tho!!!1 -
p.s. suzy - don't forget you have your reward for all your hard work coming up with the hike you're so looking forward to!!!
and gotta say.. the spaghetti squash with the marinara sauce and cheese on top?? was outstanding... lol It doesn't taste like squash tho.. at least not the acorn squash i'm used to making.. it actually tasted and looked like a bowl of spaghetti with sauce and cheese LOL.
AND at 183 cals and around 18g carbs and lots of fiber it fit nicely into my eating plan lol.
I am NOT pushing squash on ya tho!! Just saying it was a nice surprise for me haaaaaaaa
Snoozie who will never eat quinoa ever2 -
Suzy, that is just unfair. A whole month . I understand why it makes you feel like binging on junk. I've been much luckier recently, losing really well, but had a day off yesterday - actually a few hours yesterday, and I'm now up two pounds this week. That's with two days of fasting, and being VERY careful about what I was eating the rest of the week. It seems that sometimes you can do it all correctly, and it just doesn't work. I try to reassure myself that if it's not a loss, then if you HADN'T been putting the work in it would have been a gain.
Talking of squash, I have a marrow to cook. (Don't know if they're popular outside the UK - a big winter squash, like a huge zucchini). I haven't had one in years, and I can't remember if I like them or not - ha ha! I DO think quinoa is OK, but overrated. I prefer freekeh.0 -
Vailara, I lived in England for four years when I was a teenager and I never heard of a marrow...but I wasn't really much of a vegetable eater back then. I had to google it! It does look kind of like a giant zucchini. Interesting!
I was back down a pound this morning but I always wait and see if it's real before I log it. Hopefully this time I'll stay down. But jeez.....one pound in over a month? At this rate I'll reach my goal when I'm 80 and by then...who cares?!?!! There has to be an advantage to getting really old and I've always thought that it's because you should get to eat whatever you want and say "screw you weight!" Oh well. I'm hanging in there...no chocolate, no alcohol.
Have a good weekend everyone!0 -
Yay on being down the pound Agsin Suzy - perhaps it's the beginning of the woosh about to kick in so hang in an keep bein consistent line you have been - I'm keeping all the parts I can cross crossed for ya !!!
I had to laugh when I saw you Googled marrow because I did the same thing1 -
Drat it cut off half my reply I'm using my phone and Siri because the website is so slow I just wanted to say as well huge congratulations to you Gail I know I posted directly on your newsfeed but I'm so happy for you on your weight loss and the fact that you have made it to the lowest weight you've seen in 25 yrs is a huge accomplishment - well done and doing the happy feet dance big time for u !!1
-
Ditto, Gail!!! What Snoozie said! We're all so happy for you! Maybe this happy dance will count as my exercise for the day!1
-
@ suzy - yes the happy feet dance absolutely counts as exercise LOL!!0
-
It certainly counts! Double!! Thanks, girls! Slow and steady wins the race....
I thought she meant Bone Marrow....hahahhaa
Vailara, I read you did a 48 hour fast... I am bowing down to you!! I couldn't make it over 18....that's from dinner the night before to 1:00 pm ...but I am usually never hungry.
Suzy, You are probably adding Muscle along with the fat burning from all your great hikes. Are you keeping a measurement going ? I don't measure regularly, but when I do I can see some results that aren't showing up on the scale... Just separate from those scales for a while. You are doing great things for yourself!!
Snoozie, Thank you for your awesomeness!
How did you like the spaghetti squash? I have tried it, can't say I don't like it, but I haven't found the best way to top it...I usually just try salt, pepper, butter and that doesn't do it for me...I may look into your recipe. Oh, I just read it was awesome!! good to know.. I read bit anfd type a bit, because I forgot who said what! LOL0 -
Gail - the squash was topped with marinara sauce and cheese!! sooooo ya know.. yum!! honestly it tasted just like eating a bowl of spaghetti with sauce and cheese that was my first time trying it and it was so freaken easy to make and so good it will def be on my keeper list!
the spagetti squash tho.. i find it's pretty bland so I don't think i'd like it with just salt and pepper and butter....
I DO love my acorn squash with just butter tho... the little ones that look like an acorn? I just split em, put a dab of butter in the middle and sometimes a tsp of brown sugar...but usually not as it sweetens as it bakes.. and bake away... yum... but they def have a flavour to them a carmelized kinda sweetness) and I loves my acorn squash..
but they have a far different taste than this spaghetti one.. as it didn't seem to have any taste at all to me lol.... it just looks like spaghetti when u scrape it up but i couldn't taste any "squash" flavour on its own when i tried it... very bland... which i guess is why the recipe adds tomato sauce and cheese... a very low carb pasta substitute I guess. But have to say it was good!!0 -
I can't believe I just did an entire post about squash2

Hahahaha!1

I found this eye opening and interesting to listen to, copied from my LCHF group. I thought you might listen especially if you are concerned about Diabetes or Alzheimer's.
(Sorry , I don't know how to put the actual "click- on thingy".)
It opened my eyes to slipping around and eating a little bread , a little pasta here and a little sugar there.... even more than picturing razor sharp sugar in my blood as Snoozie awakened me to early on in my diagnosis.1 -
Ohhh....so maybe I do know how....I see it posted it...hope it works...1
-
omg gail (first of all congrats on getting that put up.. very impressed!!)
second. OMG.
that was one scary freaken video... I watched parts of it twice... and for me the stuff from the12:25 to 14:00 mark??? omg.. I watched that section 2x!
completely scary shittt. (for me more so about the diabetes) but also of course the correlation to Alzhiemers.
thanks for this it will serve as a refresher of WHY i'm here anytime I need it!!
p.s. i'm awfuly sowwy about leaving you with that nasty visual way back... but it worked on me in the class along with the fear factor lol... so honestly thot it might help!
1 -
Hahaha...don't be sorry....it has helped me plenty of times to not eat sweets! I hope these two combined will deter me even more....
Snoozie, I'm glad you found it interesting, I intend to review it several times to take it
all in.
1 -
slide to the time at 12:25 into the video Gail - that two minute part really got to me!1
-
Very interesting video Gail. Thanks for sharing.1
-
Congratulations on that hard-won pound, Suzy! And congratulations again, Gail - HUGE achievement! And thanks for the posting the video. Very interesting.
Now, I didn't actually fast for 48 hours, but did two 24 hours fasts (with 24 hours in between), so that was MUCH easier. I think 24 hours (or less) seems to be enough to get the benefits of fasting, so no plans to go longer just at the moment. I'm combining it with a form of LCHF (I'm not counting macros or anything).
The marrow turned out OK, but it was huge! I still have half to eat. I ended up roasting it in big slices with a bit of olive oil and seasoning (mainly salt and chilli) and a few pieces of crispy bacon on top. I think the bacon was the best bit!
2 -
lol @ vail on the bacon being the best part.. everything's better with bacon! Holy cow on the back to back fasting.... when you talk about using that method also as a "reset" is that meaning the fasting is used to reset your metabolism?
Suzy - how ya doing girl? That was some hike you went on - well done you! how did the knee hold up? and when is the big big one coming up?
Today was my scheduled weekly weigh in date; no change (well a miniscule one like .02 ounces.. which disappeared shortly after consumming two coffees haha) I've been kinda intermittent logging and have to admit, I've been slightly shocked as just how many calories i'm actually consuming when I think I've really cut down on a lot of the crap and on portions.. but the numbers don't lie.. and i'm not moving enough to burn off any significant amount so a little tweaking is going to be in order with either food or moving.
I had a pretty good week with my goal of eating for my BG; still struggling with the routine of adding snacks and portion sizes tho; i was out all day yesterday and let myself get hungry cause i coudn't be bothered to stop and eat something; and my BG was sky high just before dinner.. so i made a good choice for dinner as such.. grilled a steak with carrots and broccoli - relatively healthy HAD I eaten just enough to stop my hunger, but nope.. ended up having seconds which I KNEW I wasn't hungry enough for, I just wanted it I managed not to freak afterwards and go into the "i'm an idiot" phase tho.. I know i'm making progress and it's gonna take time to change my habits but I was a little frustrated with myself since it really wasn't hunger induced eating.
Until my next A1C testing end of October, my goal is to just concentrate on proper eating and will add in a sub goal of logging to see my caloric intake more often.
Heading to the lake as it supposed to start pouring around noon for the next 24 hrs... good thing i'm a procrastinator and left a lot of home chores to do.. ha!
What's on everyone elses agenda for this week?
1 -
Yes, Snoozie, it is eye opening and it is exactly how my brother lives with his, he hasn't tried to cut back , he feels as long as he's getting good enough numbers to keep his doctor happy, then he's ok...still eating sugar free everything....I personally believe that any type of sugar is harmful....even more so sugar free....
I always hear people say..." Well I'll just take another metformin.... " and that might be ok once in a while....but not on a regular basis....just my 2 cents worth ...lol
You're doing great! You didn't gain. That is a huge win!!! especially when we know how easily it can come back on us!!
Oh, Ok, Vailara...I read it too quickly.... I might on a good day make it 24...I've been close.....but only since lowering my carbs. I could never make it when I was on the carbs heavily.
0 -
Gail - the line he said about how its become the norm now for people to think I can eat anything I want since i'm on metformin... and then it becomes on insulin.. and his comment right there where he said since when did it become "the norm" to proceed to insulin for a T2? THAT hit home for me... and reminds me my goal is to get OFF the metformin, not eventually have to end up "upping" to insulin.. omg..
I AM a little pissed at the diabetic education offered here tho.. even tho granted we have excellent resources available to us at no cost, there is a couple of months wait after them to meet with a dietician.... and I guess im just a bit miffed nobody checked with me after my first round a few years ago to see if I "got" it.. cause I obviously missed a couple of really iimportant parts!!! I wasted months way back checking the sugar level in everything and completely ignoring the carb content.. kinda like your brother except I didn't know any better (not sure if he does?) AS you know I was under the misguided impressession it was all about the sugar content at first.. and I just wish someone had sat with me and said ok lucy.... splain to me what you THINK you should be doing..
anyway.. I AM grateful I've since learned better, but that video also opened my eyes a wee bit to what my doctor had explained way back.... that I have to be invested in my health as well... her job is not to just dole out pills like candy to keep me from killing myself while i continue to make terrible life choices. It has to be a partnership and I have to pull my weight.. so to speak LOLOL..
So I really appreciated you sharing that video. its great when everyone contributes their info and experiences as we all get to learn new stuff and sometimes find out we AREN'T the only ones struggling with something... so thanks to you guys for being willing to take the time and share!!
got a lovely walk in before the rain, and scored some chicken breasts on sale so the rest of the day will be spent cooking up some stuff to freeze for Saturday when i'm back to work (yikes... THAT'S gonna be a shock to my system lol) and scrubbing .... and probably a small reward mid afternoon on a "union break" curled up with my book for an hour... ha!!1 -
I was doing exactly the same thing, Suzanne ... cutting back on Sugars...still eating breads, pasta, rice, potatoes... I didn't know...
No, I'm not sure he knows....but it's touchy with telling people, especially family, sometimes about what is the best thing to eat.. I try to set an example when I am with him, by saying out loud, no shouldn't have that it will turn to sugar when digesting...little things like that.
Well, in this little rural town, we really have no D education to speak of as far a Diabetics education class.. There is a nurse that comes on certain days.
Ah yes...the dreaded 4 letter word...WORK!!!
I am falling asleep this morning, eyes all glazed over...it's a bit quiet ..
