Amazing pictures, Suzy! 55 miles! And that is a pretty hefty looking pack you have with you as well! It's an incredible achievement and I'm so pleased about your knee. I watched the film "A Walk in the Woods" the other night and was thinking of you. I'm very ignorant about geography so I don't know if any of it was set anywhere near where you were. Welcome back!

    Morning Hatters!

you are quite an inspiration Suzy... honestly I was so impressed with your accomplishment as mentioned above... I GUESS you're proud of yourself you have every reason to be!!

Vail - I saw your post about being hungrier in the evenings; I had a problem this week being on dayshift with the evenings too.. but not from hunger just trying to avoid munching but it was very hard; succeeded some days, not others.

I may however have made some progress with my kryptonite food lays wavy potato chips.. I bought a bag with every intention of just having a serving... but did what I always do and ate the whole bag eventually... but as you all know ive been eating to my meter as such these past few weeks trying to see what effect what I eat has on my BG.. so I tested my BG and scared myself senseless when I saw the number... I hve NEVER seen my BG level so high.. ever... and while I know its not about one number or one test, that one honest to god scared me so much I have no desire at the moment to ever see a chip again. I know of course that its unrealistic to think i'll never want chips again... there was an interesting article coincidentally a few days ago in the MFP blog about "should i avoid my kryptonite food" ... anyway... good lesson. I did better this dayshift because of the food i prepped and froze before hand, but made a lot of chicken dishes and realized by day 4 i was pretty sick of chicken LOL.. so note to self for next one. Evenings coming up but i have all morning to prep my food so that's a good thing.

No weight loss for me this week which i find kinda curious as my stomach is definitely getting used to the smaller portions now. i still struggle mentally prepping stuff.. i will make a dish and serve it up and realize its a full size dinner plate... but i'm getting better. At work i brought sandwiches occasionally but good bread and healthy innards.. but have returned to eating only 1/2 sandwich at a time... so i'm eating more frequently, but definitely less cals and better choices and more veg etc.. but i may have to start logging again to see if i'm overguessing what i'm actually eating. anyway i did make progress with smaller portions this week and better choices so it was a good week overall. Only downside was not much walking in but back to it today.

It's a holiday weekend here (our Thanksgiving) but turned down a few invites for big dinners as im just not comfortable at the moment with trusting myself not to indulge with food and wine :) Tomorrow i'm gonna take my senior friend out for a drive to see the leaves and do lunch somewhere off the beaten track... then enjoy the rest of my days off til back to work.

hope everyone is doing good and has a great weekend

Snoozie, that's an eye opener about those potato chips! That's my weakness too. It honestly feels like an addiction once I get started on them. I have banned them from the house. I now keep those seaweed snacks (dried, roasted, salted seaweed) in the house for "emergencies", although they're not quite the same.

I get sick of chicken too. I think chicken breast is fairly planned compared to some other meats. I've been eating more lamb recently - maybe not as healthy, but I'm never sure about the claims about healthiness of different meats anyway.

Good work on the smaller portions and food choices! Enjoy Thanksgiving weekend!

    Morning Hatters....

Vail - lol @ the chicken; I swear I thought I was going to start clucking. Weirdly and I don't know why, but lamb is not something we eat a lot of here... its kinda like turkey, only served at Easter... I guess because I've only had it once or twice in my life I never think of it; but last Easter I was at a friend;s place and they did it on the BBQ and it was amazing!! loved it..
but its rare to even find it in the grocery stores here unless its frozen..

We have had incredible weather here for October - beautiful high temps and sunshine, a few days ago on my walk after work at the lake a bunch of monarch butterflies were all around.. I think I saw a documentary once that they all head to Mexico.. kinda like penguins always going back to one specific place? Anyway shot a few pics so thought i'd post a couple... rock on peeps!

Wow! Beautiful! Happy Thanksgiving! I too get tired of chicken. I wish my husband ate fish because I hate cooking two different meals. I don't like lamb at all. My biggest frustration is just coming up with a menu for the week. Wouldn't it be awesome to have a personal chef and trainer?! I laugh about people like Oprah doing Weight Watchers commercials....come on...you're one of the wealthiest people in the world and you don't have someone making your meals? Really?! Haha! I've got to make my menu for the week and go grocery shopping today or I know I'll be eating terribly today. My kryptonite food is sweets...anything sweet. Luckily I can pass on chips but cookies? Ugh!!!

Okay ladies...back to the real world! My knee is a bit sore and I've got groceries to buy! Have a great day!

    Gorgeous pictures, Snoozie!

I like fish, but it's difficult to get good, fresh fish here for a decent price, and I don't find it very filling for some reason. I do sometimes buy king prawns.

At the moment I'm not bothering with menus, just worrying about having some protein-type food in the house (meat, soya, nuts, etc.) and a lot of vegetables, plus plenty of oils, seasonings and so on, which then gives me a lot of options on the day - stirfries, salads, stews, curries, roasts with gravy, etc. But would LOVE to have a personal chef and trainer and not to have to think about it! My only requirement would be that they cook delicious food. If I'm going to spend calories it's got to be worth it - lol!

My current kryptonite is Germano's chilli sauce with garlic in olive oil. I can't get enough of it. Fortunately there is only so much you can really eat, so although it's high calorie (and has a touch of sugar in the ingredients), I'm not eating more than a teaspoonful at a time. But when I'm not eating it, I keep thinking about eating it!

OMG on the personal chef and trainer.. and OPRAH!!! tell me about it!!!! I swear on a stack of bibles if I was rich, the ONE and only thing I would absolutely HAVE would be a personal chef.. as you said its the figuring out WHAT all the time, not the making of... and since I love pretty much ALL food it would be an easy job - not like they would have to deal with a picky eater.... but then THEY could figure out WHAT to make 3x a day because I swear I agree that is the hardest part suzy!!!

and puhleeze... i'm not an oprah fan to start with (comes from when I worked at the bookstore for so many years with the "Oprah table") lol.. BUT.. for the richest human on the planet next to Bill Gates the WW endorsement to me is just so obviously a money maker only thing for her. She has what..? 14 houses around the world?? and has something like 40 BILLION dollars.. and you cannot tell me that she doesn't have a chef preparing not only healthy but incredibly delish meals that we would all KILL to have made 3x a day, 365 days a year. So ya need WW? Ya.. I think not.... ca ching ca ching.

I don't in any way correlate her $$ to her weight problem tho.. not saying cause she's rich she can't be overweight, cause god knows we ALL know so much of our eating probs are emotional... i'm just saying.. WW ??? ya.... ok... sure Oprah... you have the resources to have it all done for ya.

right then rant over lol. had a fabulous day driving up north to the Niagara escarpment with my little 88 year old senior friend.. the leaves changing are gorgeous; wild reds, oranges, yellows and greens... just a beautiful time of year and a perfect sunny day to enjoy. We did stop at a bakery half way back lol... BUT.. I managed to find a little pumpkin tart for myself.. I love pumpkin pie... but I refused to buy an entire pie this year (after the disaster one) as I knew I would eat it.. but I was jonesing for a piece .. so the little tart has come home with me for dessert tonite LOL... and i'm just fine with that!!

p.s. ok if I was rich I would also have new sheets every night. and fresh flowers all over the house.

p.p.s. I love all kinds of fish, except shellfish... I know it's strange.. i'll eat shellfish if its served to me in public... but would never voluntarily make or eat it lol. tuna, salmon, haddock, cod, yada yada... bring it on!

p.p.p.s. There's a Thai sweet chili sauce they sell here that is to DIE for... but I always forget about it - now I just might have to grab a bottle vail..!!

p.p.p.p.s thanks about the pics.. I was kinda happy with em myself lol

Good for you Snoozie for limiting yourself to the small tart! I'm having a terrible time trying to get back on track. I was a total slug yesterday and napped and ate all day. I started out this morning okay but then ate my husband's powdered donuts!!!! I think mentally I'm justifying it to myself because I worked so hard on the hike. I've got to figure out how to kick my butt back into gear!
  • Snooozie
    Snooozie Posts: 3,461 Member
I ended up eating TWO tarts Suzy .... :'( but i know it was still better than a whole pie so treating it as my 20% for the day and moving on! As far as the donut plunge, think you've already figured out the same; consider it your own 20% and don't sweat it!! You sweated enough on that hike to make those few little donuts just like a couple of trees in a big forest.... won't even make a dent in your journey!

Today was my weigh in day; I am exactly the same as I was a week ago; right to the ounce. Sigh. Would have liked to see a small loss but know at the moment its about learning to eat smaller and better for my BG.. and i'm happy overall for this week with my progress there so not gonna let the lack of weight loss derail me. I DO think I've been eating less overall, not just smaller amounts, but obviously still taking in more than I need to sustain all my working parts so we'll see what happens next week.. hard to believe there are only about 11 weeks left in this year.. :o

I sincerely think that it takes more than a week for the scale to reflect what's going on with our bodies. You're doing great Snoozie! Being aware of portion sizes is a huge part of the battle.

I'm letting myself off the hook today. I went for my evening three mile walk and decided that I expended enough energy last week to give myself a couple days off. I'm getting back to my routine tomorrow. Unfortunately (or fortunately...since I love seeing my brother) I'm having guests from Wednesday to Sunday. I'll really have to buckle down and make good choices when we eat out.

I'm sure a couple of days off will do you good, Suzy. Time to recharge! Have a nice time with your guests. I have a similar problem tonight - going out for a meal, and the choices will be pasta or pizza, neither of which are particularly low-carb - lol! I think I'm just going to have to have a small portion of something I like and write it off!

    Morning Gail, Vail and Suzy...

Totally agree with Vail that a few days off will do you good mentally and physically Suzy...
and for both if you know you're going to be eating out a lot in the next few days, maybe not worry about WHAT you're going to eat, but just watch the portion sizes instead.. eat an afternoon snack of cheese and crackers or some veg and dip before ya go; that way you still get a break and can eat anything you want, just keep an eye on the portions (and maybe ask for a doggie bag LOL) and its a win win :) how lovely you get a visit with your brother in Suzy.. it was great making that unexpected trip to see my sister and cousins in August.. so hope you have a great time. Getting together with family and friends is a lovely gift we can give ourselves and too often, it seems life gets too busy so both you and Vail enjoy!

I went for my blood tests this morning for doc apt next week.. I know it's only been just shy of a month since I started changing how I eat, and this test takes a 3 month average of my blood sugars so I'm trying NOT to get too hyped up hoping for good results since it hasn't been long enough to make that much difference.. BUT I admit secretly I still want to see them come down LOL.

But I HAVE decided if the number hasn't come down and she still wants to up my diabetes meds I am going to say no and instead request another test in another 3 months. She agreed last time to let me wait, but I wasn't able to get into the classes til Sept. so it won't have had time to make much difference. I think she will agree to let me keep going.. (not tht she has to agree lol.. I get to make the decision) but we have an excellent partnership in my health so I know its her job to keep me as healthy as she can and will want to up the meds unless I get them down with diet and exercise - but i DO know i'll get a little talking to about keeping up my end of the job LOL.

Hope everyone has a good week mentally, physically and emotionally and that we all make progress on whatever part of the path to our journeys we are on right now!

p.s. Gail & mILOVE - thanks on the photos.. I blew them up too much tho.. the butterflies look huge HA. but it was a beautiful spot and there were so many of them I couldn't resist.

Caught a bunch of our geese about to start the trek south yesterday... and taking their poop with em LOL.

Geese are the masters of poop spreading. We have lots near us, I'm sure I've mentioned them, as I live near a river and there are always geese, ducks and other birds, but mainly geese! Canada and greylag, I think. I kind of like them, but yes, they do tend to leave evidence of their passing - ha ha! They seem to be here all year round. The RSPB describes the greylag geese in our area as "semi-tame and uninspiring" and the Canada geese as "noisy flocks, often regarded as a nuisance", which is a bit mean, if you ask me. If you can't think of anything nice to say ....

Good luck with the tests, and with the medication, Snoozie. You do seem to have things in hand, diet-wise, at the moment.

I had a great visit with my brother and his wife. Now they're gone and I gained three pounds! I haven't walked or exercised in almost a week and have eaten like there's no tomorrow. So it's back to making good choices and getting my butt back to the gym.....hmmmm...can the gym wait until tomorrow? It's going to have to; I'm exhausted. I'm actually pretty shocked that it's just three pounds.

How's everyone else doing? Congratulations on the weight loss Snoozie! You're doing great!

    Suzy..

just remember the most important line in your post above is "I had a GREAT visit with my brother and his wife" !!

We never want to get to the point that we dread seeing friends or family because it might impact our weight loss and/or fitness goals.. and the reality is for all of us that most socializing happens around food and drink - and I truly believe (for me anyway) I always want to look forward to those occasions... i'm not saying we don't have to be mindful, god knows especially with the holiday season not far away... but maybe if we just look at those times we get to see the people important to us as simply our "20%" time, that eventually we wont even have to worry about any gain or time missed exercise beause it will just be habit for us to return to "our" normal eating and exercise routine afterwards, so therefore the occasional change in our routine beomes immaterial overall...

I think it's important we don't stress ourselves out even MORE than we already do... and I'm working on changing my mindset towards this plan - so hope you take today for that all important "rest and relaxation" time we always forget is just as important for us, and look forward to simply returning to your own "normal" tomorrow!! So glad you enjoyed the visit.. truly!

i'm happy to finally see a bit of loss.. I think of it as the woosh factor.... hoping that by trying to be consistent with the portion sizes this past month (rather than the specifics of "what" i'm eating... may finally be letting my body know I wont be messing with it anymore lol... and it can let go of the extra stores of fat .. yup that's my theory and i'm sticking to it.. hahahaha

    have a good one peeps!

Love the new diet program pic, Suzanne!! That might actually work for me....especially when my hand slides over for something sweet!! lol

Suzy, glad you had a great visit. Those extra pounds will come off quickly ,as soon as you get back on track. I'm like Snoozie, I don't stress over eating too much when I am having fun....it will level out on the days I am not celebrating..

    Awesome work girls!

I think I have another pound I can take off...I have seen it a few days in a row...so maybe it will be safe to put it down...I may wait until tomorrow.

Off work today, for a bit of dental work, I may try to get in a Dr. visit for this head cold allergy thing I have been dealing with for over two months!!! I am tired of snotting.....if something wonderful could be made from it...I could be a multi millionaire!!

Suzy, I'm glad you had such a good time, and I'm sure it was worth three pounds! That's actually pretty good (I've just gained four pounds after some fairly minimal indulgence!).

Congratulations on the loss, Snoozie :).

And on that elusive pound too, Gail!

After gleefully reaching my goal (of my old maintenance weight), I had about two days to be smug about it before I started gaining - despite being pretty strict! So I'm aiming to get back there and beyond. I'm still doing intermittent fasting (24 hour fasts, not more than every other day), combined with portion control and ... well, I was doing LCHF, but not being quite so good on that as I was, which is maybe where my problem lies at the moment.

Early congrats on that pound Gail and ewwww on the snotting thing!

Vailara - getting to your maintenance weight again is awesome! I know you'll figure it out and get back there soon.

I've lost my momentum and am trying to find it again. I need someone to kick me in the backside and make me go to the gym!!!

giggle snort... couldn't resist when I saw your post Suzy!!

LONG set of shifts.. thankful tonite was the last one for a few days; tomorrow am out all day with my senior friend for chores and doc appts for her..

had my doc apt this morning; A1C was down 1/2 pt ... didn't expect much as not long enough on the new eating to register this time around, but am happy it was down at all and got another 3 months to get it even lower; cholesterol however won't budge for some reason; I went from 4.9 to 2.7 but she wants it below 2.. but am trying to eat more bran buds (yuck) as suggested by the diabetes class chick... supposed to help lower cholesterol so I disguise it in a 1/2 serving of fibre 1 cereal, or yogurt.. then it's just crunchy and I can't taste it lol.

She also thinks it could be a tear in the muscle in my arm/shoulder since the physio didn't make much difference and from the pain area and range of motion, so she'll be scheduling an MRI to see or rule it out. Anyway all in all I was happy but am absolutely going to stay on track until the next visit.. I might need that kick in the butt back myself down the road tho lol..

Gail - also happy for the "i think" pound gone... GO FOR IT!!! YAYYYYYYYYYYYY
