The colony caretaker I'm helping to sub for is not doing well at all. She's been back to the hospital, spent several DAYS at urgent care, and now is likely headed back to the hospital. Her son and DIL, whom she's spent untold time helping (DIL has a wasting disease as does one of her grandchildren) are doing only what the public will see. E.g. they insist on taking her to doctor's appointments, but expect Lil to do her yard (SERIOUSLY???), take care of her cats, feed the colonies, etc. Meanwhile son is working on buying a vacation home!!! We were hoping the doctors they could give her five years. If she dies soon, they expect Lil to take care of the 15 or so cats in her house, most of which are feral, so we're probably talking euthanasia in most cases. Lil has no money and I don't think that's a legitimate CROM expense which probably means Lil does the dirty work and I pay the bills just because someone has to. If the son gave us some time before selling the house we might be able to find places for some of them. I've been pushing Lil to talk to her to make sure the first thing that happens with the money from the sale of her house is reimbursing Lil for what she may spend on those cats and to make sure the sale of the house is delayed at least 6 months. But right now it may all be happening too fast. Lil is afraid that if she dies the son may just open the door to the house.
I see this SO often. Older person dies and children won't do anything for his/her beloved pets. I see it so often that it has colored my thinking on adoptions. Whenever the application says someone is retired, I start to inquire about what will happen with the cats. If someone insists their children will take them, I insist on talking to the children. I've had so many people react badly to that. They all assume their children will step in but I'm here to tell you that's the exception rather than the rule.
The colonies are near me so I keep reassuring Lil that we don't have to euthanize the colonies. Since I'm working full-time it's not easy but heck, it's exercise. There are two exceptions, places we have to work on. In one case I think the girls at a nearby vet may feed. In the other case, I think we may just need to move the feeding station.
I can tell Lil is totally stressed. I'm trying not to be but it's not easy.

Maryanne--Congrats upon the weight loss and getting the bear out of the closet. You are doing a super job.
Helene--Medical expenses can be extreme. I've been fortunate that Medicare covered all my procedures. For two alone last year, they covered nearly $60,000 not counting tests.
Pam--You are very satisfied with your choice of calcium supplement. I've also heard that Andrew Lessman's product is excellent.
I use Caltrate Soft Chews with Vitamin D. It is the only calcium supplement I have been successful taking. Too many calcium pills are too big for me, and since I take so many pills the soft chews are like eating a candy...a treat. I am on a med that depletes calcium from the bones and have been on it for years. It is a losing battle. If I had discovered the soft chews early on, I would have been more successful in the fight for stronger bones.0 -
Helen - NPH's tony appearances are all on you tube. My favorite is the 2013 opening.0

Oh my! I have an ad on the right for Fiber One Strawberry Cheesecake bars. These are so good but they ignite the desire to have more than one. It is another one of those things that I have learned to avoid....unless there is just one bar.0
-
Maryanne, that's the one I take and that's a good price on it. I think that's about what I pay for it with my discount coupon for 250 capsules. I notice this bottle contains 360 capsules, so it's actually a GREAT price. I may have to start ordering mine online instead of getting it at my local store.0

You're welcome - LOL!!!!!!0 -

I have Special K cereal with berries. Also good but not filling.0 -
Pam--I am always checking Amazon for items. Sometimes, it is amazing about the prices and the delivery time. Right now, I have a subscribe and save delivery on its way, which includes a vitamin supplement at the same price as WalMart but it saves me time hunting for it when in the store. Also, I have a big box of Fresh Step cat litter on its way, which saves me lugging it from the car to the house....the no shipping charges work well for me.
Maryanne--I agree about the Special K cereal with berries. I think it is good but it does not fill me up like Quaker Weight Control oatmeal.0 -
I think I'm about "egged out". I may have oatmeal for breakfast before I go out to feed the colonies.0
-
Maryanne--I went through a dozen of eggs for a change from the Quaker Weight Control Oatmeal. I am now back to the oatmeal.
B: Quaker Weight Control oatmeal
L: Atkins Cafe Caramel Shake (This is very good)
S: Dannon Light and Fit Greek Yogurt or Cottage Cheese (undecided)
D Tyson grilled chicken breast and steamer bag of veggies
S: To Be Determined0 -
Heading out for a very early Dr appointment with DH. This doctor has hours once a week in a closer location. That appointment got rescheduled and the next appointment there was late July. So DH took an appointment at the other location. It's about a 40 miles drive but since he goes every 6 months, we needed to get this in so the next appointment doesn't delay going to FL next winter. Spent Tuesday decluttering and got the piles out of the house yesterday. It felt good to see a bit of progress.0
-
Helene--I got used to all those long distance doctor's appointments 65 miles away. It is difficult for those used to very convenient locations. I also am in a decluttering phase. I just sold $75 worth of items this morning on a Facebook garage sale. So much easier than eBay or having your own garage sale. You just post a pic, info, etc. There are no fees to post and no one like eBay takes part of your sales.0

Jack's internist is 50 or 60 miles away but generally my doctors and vets are around 20 miles or so. Not as bad.
I just did a spreadsheet for tomorrow - flea market set up. I find I tend to think I'm working so hard on such days that I don't need to count calories. Wrong!
Today I had wonderslim pancakes for breakfast, protein bar in my car for lunch, JC chicken and baked beans with mixed vegetables for dinner. So far so good today!0 -
I had the Atkins Italian Pasta Bake for dinner, along with steamed veggies. I'll be ending the day with around 1100 calories.
I'll be off to the city tomorrow for a chiropractic appointment. I will be meeting my niece for lunch at the Outback. I will have their tilapia which is so, so good.0 -
I'm up and getting ready to head out to flea market set up. I'm going to have a frozen Smart Ones entree for breakfast and pack lunch to go.
0 -
I did go to the city today and met my niece for lunch. Afterwards, I picked up some food items at WalMart.
Today, I hopped on the scales. I actually weigh 7 pounds less than at the beginning of June and 3 pounds less than I weighed on Sunday.
Maryanne--I hope the flea market went well. You planned well with the Smart Ones for breakfast and a safe lunch to go.0 -
Jean - congrats on the weight loss!!
I'm tired. Setting up 5 spaces (50 feet, 13 tables) at a flea market is hard work. This morning I feed the colonies and then I'll head to the flea market. Not sure what to expect. They are having a tractor pull in the closest parking area which means there will be no close parking. How many flea market nuts (I mean shoppers) will trek from the farther lots I guess we'll see.
0 -
Maryanne--I hope the flea market is productive for you today for all the hard work you have done getting it ready to go. I think the tractor pull should have been in an outer lot. I'd rather looks at "fleas" than a tractor pull.0
-
I'd say the flea market took a hit but it could have been worse. I wish the organizers of things like this would think about their vendors. We should have been emailed and asked if we wanted to pull out. Or at the very least had an apology once we got there. At the end there were the usual dire warnings over the microphone about this that and the other thing. That seemed particularly inappropriate given the lack of apologies.
This morning I have to feed the colonies and then head for PA for father's day.
I didn't do at all great yesterday on food. I was exhausted and hungry.
0 -
Maryanne--Sorry about the flea market situation. If you didn't do great on food, today is a new day and the start of a new week. Put it in the past and move on.
I got on the scales this morning to compare with last Sunday. I am down 5 pounds from last Sunday. It is water loss mostly. Yesterday, I officially started the Atkins 40 program and had already started "low carbing" the past week. I've already had 3 glasses of water today; aiming for 10.0 -
Checking in before I head out to do a couple of errands. My sister came to visit last Thursday, so I've been busy doing things with her. She left yesterday morning and I spent the day recovering from her visit, lol! We didn't do as much shopping as we normally do because I still can't walk that much, but we did do enough that I needed to rest my foot yesterday. I'll be careful not to overdo it today.
DH left early yesterday morning as well for a week long camping trip with friends. I plan to use this week to try to lose a couple of pounds. While I was so sick earlier this year I lost 7 pounds, but have regained 2-3 of them. I'd really like to lose those pounds again before my well woman checkup in early July, and this week should help me get there. Hopefully I'll be able to maintain it and maybe even keep losing.0 -
Pam--It is good that you could be busy creating good memories with your sister, despite the foot feeling the effects somewhat. I'm sure that you will do well losing the pounds you gained plus some extra before your appointment.
I've downed 6 glasses of water as of 2pm. It is easier to drink out of the faucet than when cold.0 -
Good luck with 10 glasses. I struggle trying to drink 6 a day. I'd probably have better results if I did more water. I hope Maryanne rethinks that flea market location for next year. The organizers sounded very inept and insentitive. In her place I wouldn't go there again Pam, it sounds like you had a good visit with your sister.0
-
Helene--I've found the trick to drinking the water is to drink it out of the tap so it isn't too cold. It goes down more easily with no sipping with prolongs the effort. I'm aiming for 3 glasses around each meal, two before and one afterwards, plus another in between. I don't know how long I will keep this up as drinking water has always been a challenge.0
-
I come from a family of water drinkers but I like it cold. I keep a Brita pitcher on the kitchen counter and pop ice out of the freezer side of the frig all day.
Jean - good luck on your efforts!!

I prefer my water cold as well. Room temperature water is much harder for me to get down the hatch. When I remember to buy lemons, I like to squeeze a little fresh lemon into mine. I've also had it served to me with cucumber slices and fresh mint and that is refreshing as well.
I was successful with my errands today. While my sister and I were shopping we found a great sale and I bought a pair of slacks and three tops for less than $60, but one of the tops really needed a necklace to accessorize it, so I was looking for one that would work. I found a very nice one and some earrings for $15.00 and another necklace and earrings for another outfit for $12.00. Not bad, and I really like both sets.
My other errand was at the grocery store where I was shopping for ingredients to cook dinner on Wednesday for my neighbor who was in the terrible accident in Spain. He's home now but still recovering and working hard with physical and occupational therapy daily. I wanted to do something for them so I'm cooking a pork tenderloin with a cherry sauce, roasted potatoes, asparagus, salad and rolls, and probably some cookies for dessert. Of course, some of that will find its way onto my plate, as well. I need to make something for my volunteer gig at the facility for women and children who are escaping domestic violence and starting over, so baking cookies for my neighbor will kill two birds with one stone as I will split the cookies between the two of them so I don't have them sitting here tempting me. I'll still have to go to the store once more because I didn't want to buy the asparagus or tomatoes yet, but that will be a quick trip.0 -
I like my water cold but if it is super cold, it is harder to get a lot of it down. The room temp water goes down faster so I am more likely to meet my goal. If I sip throughout the day, I'd likely never reach the goal.
Pam--It is great that you are helping the neighbor out. That menu sounds wonderful.0 -
At family dinners there were always pitchers of water on the table. When I was in high school I was invited to dinner with a friend's family. A rarity in those days. At dinner they served glasses of soda. My mind just spun! To this day when I go out to dinner I ask for a glass of water and a glass of unsweetened ice tea and often I'll get refills on at least one. The first time the man who is now my best friend's ex husband went to dinner with us he listened to me other and then said "so that's where she gets it". LOL!
Tomorrow I go for yet another thyroid biopsy. I hope this one tells us something. Then I'm taking my best friend for her belated birthday dinner.

Maryanne--Good luck with the thyroid biopsy.
I stopped at 8 glasses of water today. There is always tomorrow...but tomorrow I go to the city for appointments. I don't think I'll be drinking much water tomorrow. Food was ok today.0 -
I like my water room temperature although I can drink it with ice when I'm at a restaurant. Pam..That's so nice of you to male dinner for your neighbor. After receiving dinner while you were recuperating, you know what a nice gift that was. How is his recovery going? I think it's amazing he's able to do therapy already. he sounds very motivated. Maryanne..good luck with the biopsy.I hope it comes back clean.0
