I'm at the library using their computer. It's so much less frustrating to post on this site than trying to do it at home. I'm sure my problems are the age of the computer and the fact I'm still using Windows 7. I've been getting a string of pop up ads that pretty much cover the submit button. I've got the pop up blocker on and run the virus scans but I still get this junk and have no idea how to get rid of it. Grrr.
I've been to the chiropractor already and got a fresh coat of polish on my nails. When I first started doing the gel polishes, I opted for the palest pink. I didn't think it would hold up and that I'd have chips in 3 days. That's what happens with regular polish. I've found I can go at least 2 weeks before it has to be redone. I'm thrilled and I've graduated to bolder colors. For the first time, I'm wearing sparkly blue. Last time was purple. LOL.
I came to the library to pick up the new John Verdon book. I guess I was the first to request it a couple of weeks ago. It's due out in July but libraries tend to get the books a little bit earlier. The title is Wolf Lake. Maryanne introduced me to his books and I've read them all.0 -
````````````````````````(Jack just typed that)
There was something screwy with the release date of the John Verdun book. I've had it about a week.
I have my thyroid biopsy later this afternoon and then my best friend and I are having dinner for her birthday.
This morning I did 1/2 my treadmill time and fed the colonies. In between all this I'm trying to sandwich in some work!0 -
Jack is a very talented boy! Good luck with the biopsy. Do they just insert a needle to examine fluid? I have an appointment with my new primary care doctor July 1st. I hope I like her. I didn't have a preference so they assigned me to her. DH got a different doctor. The location is only 10 minutes from home and parking is good so we'll see how we like them. Have you started the book yet? I re-reading his first one for book discussion next week. I suggest the title so I'll be leading the discussion.0
-
I decided to make catching up on David Baldacci my summer project so I set the John Verdun aside for now. I've got quite the pile of Baldacci's!
I hope your book club likes the book!
We are in the middle of a horrendous thunderstorm - tornadoes, hail, flood waters, etc. so DH insisted I call to reschedule. So much for screwing up my courage. LOL! Yes, they insert a needle but they are removing tissue not fluid.
That meant I also called my best friend to postpone dinner. Drat! I was dreaming of a crab cake.
Helene--You may have spyware on your computer which is not the same as a virus so anti-virus software won't take care of them. You can download Malwarebytes which searches out and eliminates spyware.
Maryanne--I hope the biopsy goes well. I am sorry you have to postpone the dinner. The crab cake would have been delicious.
I went to the city today where I had two appointments and visited with a friend. Said friend has such beautiful landscaping. I came home with some hens and chicks plants that he was giving away.
I am hungry and it is an hour later than I normally have dinner, so I'm off to fix something to eat.0 -
I just finished an interesting book called "My Grandmother Asked Me To Tell You She's Sorry" by Fredrik Backman. It was suggested by a friend who reads a lot and is in a couple of book clubs. The main character is a little girl who is about to be 8 years old who is extremely close to her grandmother, who dies very early in the book. The rest of the book is about her attempting to carry out a kind of treasure hunt orchestrated by her grandmother before her death. Woven into the story is an elaborate fairy tale that the grandmother had created for her granddaughter. The granddaughter is extremely precocious. Parts of the story are very humorous and other parts were very sad. The story made me think about how interwoven relationships can be among seemingly diverse groups of people. I'm still undecided as to whether or not I enjoyed the book, but it was hard to put down at times.
I made a grocery store run today to get the last items I needed for the dinner I'm making for my neighbors tomorrow and to pick up a prescription. I had run out of the antibiotic I've been on since January. I've had some difficulty using the patient portal at my ortho doc's office. I sent two requests last week via the portal and got no response to either request. I called yesterday and left a message asking if the doctor wanted me to continue on the antibiotic and finally got a callback. They had no record of my previous requests, and I had looked at the site earlier and found no record of them either. Very odd. The MA was going to notify their IT department to look into it, but I suspect I'll never hear any more about it. I've sent other notices via the portal that don't show up in my record either.0 -
Pam--I am sorry that your patient portal isn't working. That is something we assume will work well. I have 3 doctors that use FollowMyHealth, and it works very well. I'm into reading some apocalyptic books in the Atlantis Grail series. I am eagerly awaiting Book 3 in the series to be released.
I had canned white chicken breast mixed with salsa for lunch. I don't overdo myself cooking but did enjoy it when I had people for which I could cook. Now, it is just the easy approach to getting in the fuel.0 -
I've tried setting up appointments through patient portals. Even the Hopkins one doesn't work.
0 -
Maryanne--That is a bummer about the patient portals because they can be so helpful. I will get an email notifying me when I have a message from one of my docs, and I email them and usually get a response by the end of the day. I also can see health record, test results, etc. as well as the next appointment.0
The sky is getting very dark and we now have flash flood warnings out for tomorrow. My poor "hens and chicks" from a friend which I just transplanted to an outside container will be "drowned" before getting established.0
My dinner that I prepared for my neighbors turned out very well. Of course, I made a plate for myself before delivering theirs. I have enough left over for another meal, as well. I'm tired but I expected to be even though I spread the work out throughout the day as much as I could. I was still on my feet a lot but there is no way to avoid that, unfortunately. It was nice to see my neighbor and I'm amazed at how well he is doing. He will have another hospitalization and surgery in the next month or so. There is a pressure wound on his back that is so large that the only way to heal it is via plastic surgery and a 4 week stay in the hospital on a special bed to avoid putting any pressure on the wound as it heals. He still has some short term memory issues but they said this is improving every day. One of his other pressure wounds is healing with the use of a wound vacuum, with which I am very familiar, unfortunately. In fact, as I was leaving his home health nurse arrived to change the dressing and reattach the wound vac. He has a long road ahead to fully regain his health, but he has made amazing strides. They were told that fewer than 1 in 100 people survive an injury such as he sustained.
The patient portal thing is very odd. Some of my messages get through and others don't. I get notices from them after every visit, test, or prescription refill, but my emails to the doctor, prescription requests, etc. are hit or miss. I can detect no pattern to it, but it is certainly annoying. At this point I will rely on low tech and make all future requests by phone since I can't trust their portal.0 -
The patient portals are all over the place. The Hopkins one is best because they list all your lab results. However I've had no luck contacting them through the portal. Some of my other doctor's portals seem to serve no function at all. No lab results, no email capability. I've been making sure all my tests are done through one of the Hopkins facilities so I can see them.0
-
Pam--I am glad that you were able to prepare a dinner for your neighbor and also a plate for yourself. Those pressure wounds on your neighbor sound terrible; a long road ahead for him.
We had horrible storms last night and another is now just beginning. People are without power in a section of a major city, trees are down, and an interstate is closed because of trees falling on both directions. A nursing home 30 miles away is being evacuated because of rising waters.0 -
Jean - that sounds terrible! There were some power outages here but I think they were short lived.
DH just rescued a small bird from the gutter so he says he's done his good deed for the day.0 -
We have two counties under a State of Emergency and one town had to be completely evacuated, making the national news. A small toddler was swept away in rising waters about an hour from me. We are still in a tornado watch.0
-
Jean..I've seen some of the coverage on the storms in your area. I hope it passes though quickly and that you stay safe.0
-
Helene--Thanks. Of the 55 counties, 44 have been declared under State of Emergency. I live where the damage isn't bad, just road closure from rising water. I have shopped in that small mall off the Interstate where the bridge accesses were destroyed trapping hundreds of people there. It also took out the water main so the only source of water is bottled water from K-Mart, Krogers and other stores....but the restaurants won't be able to feed people without water to prepare food, etc.0
From the National Weather Service: 98 year high levels of water.
The National Weather Service in Charleston, West Virginia, announced that the 9 p.m. water levels on the Elk and Gauley Rivers was 28.33 ft – highest recording since the 1918 record of 32.4 ft.
The hydrologic measure for the Gauley River at Camden was 29.01 ft. at 10 p.m., more than an entire story past flood stage. The Elk River at Clay was observed to be 29.87 ft. high at 10 p.m., more than 11 ft. above the flood stage marker.
How awful for all the people in those counties. I saw the news story with the collapsed road near that mall. Have they been able to get people out of the mall yet? Pam..That was sp kind of you to make that scrumptious dinner for your neighbor. I'm sure he's also glad to talk to someone who went through the wound healing successfully. The one on his back sounds gruesome. Maryanne..What are you up to today. We just ran some things down to the church thrift store. I've still got plenty of decluttering ahead to do but it's satisfying to get what ewe sorted out of the house.0
-
Helene--I'm watching the news right now and so far they are emphasizing what is needed for emergency efforts to clean up, etc. They were expected to get all those people trapped in the shopping plaza out by last evening. The water crested at around 15 feet above flood level in t he heaviest hit area. The news last night said the total amount of rainfall in the period was equal to one-third of the usual annual rainfall amount.
This is a pic of my insurance agent's business taken before the highest point.
My summer project is catching up on David Baldacci. I'm currently reading Zero Day, the first John Puller book. Really enjoying it. The reason I bring it up is that it is set in coal country in West Virginia and there's a lot of talk in it about the destruction of the land and the environmental disasters that result. I wonder if the current conditions are the combination of that with the heavy rainstorm?
0 -
Maryanne--The situation in the WV flooding was created by rainfall in a 12 hour period equal to one-third of what the area normally gets in a year. Added to that is the geographical issues of narrow valleys among all the hills that channels the above flood stage water into smaller areas as it has no place to spread. I have no doubt that some environmental issues contributed to this but the areas affected are not really in what I call coal country. We have a lot of small streams that back up in ordinary rain but this was excessive. My immediate area was fortunate to escape the wrath of the storm. I have seen water on the top of my lawn once and I am located on a very steep bank simply because of water backing up culverts and drains from a nearby small river that empties into the Ohio River.
I guess I should eat breakfast. I'll be decluttering today or I think I will.0 -
Jean, I'm so glad you're not in the area where the flooding is so bad. I know we've had flooding in some areas around here and although our neighborhood never floods, you always feel so bad for those who are dealing with it. Areas that never used to flood are starting to have some issues, in large part due to the fact that so much of the land that used to be undeveloped is now covered in concrete and buildings. So rain that used to be absorbed into the ground now runs off into the streets (also concrete), overflows the drainage systems, and the rivers overflow their banks. Then the lakes fill up and the spillways are opened and there is flooding further downstream, etc. Of course, in other years we have severe drought and are praying for rain. It would be nice if Mother Nature could balance things out a bit more, but that never seems to be the way it works.
DH is back from his camping trip and enjoyed it a lot. I have to say I enjoyed my week alone as well, but it's nice to have him back home. I lost 1 pound while he was gone so I achieved half my goal, lol! I had wanted to lose 2, but I'll take any loss and be happy with it. Today I am meeting friends for once to celebrate a birthday, so I will have to try to make a good choice and not undo my efforts.0 -
Pam--Congrats upon your weight loss. A loss is a loss!! Enjoy the outing with your friends. You are so correct that it would be nice if Mother Nature could balance out things .
I am having a 93% fat free burger with cheese and salsa without bun plus a salad for lunch. .0 -
Pam - congrats on the loss!
I need to get organized to have breakfast, go feed the colonies and then get down to work.0 -
Breakfast? Good idea, Maryanne! Have a good day at work.
I guess I should fix some breakfast. I started playing with a problem on the computer and have forgotten to eat.0 -
I'm hanging out at the library doing a little research. And I needed some book reviews for our discussion of Verdon's book tomorrow. Usually I just have to show up but since I picked the book, I'm leading the discussion. Yesterday was DH's cardiology appointment. Everything went well and the doctor is referring him for cardio rehab. It's a monitored gym type program. He doesn't get regular exercise so I think it will be good for him. We had lunch out, both of us selecting coriander crusted salmon. I don't think I ever cooked with coriander but the fish was delicious. It came with a fennel slaw, grilled asparagus and little roasted potatoes. Yum.0
-
Helene--Salmon is a great choice for those needing the Omega 3's especially heart patients. I don't cook with any fancy herbs or spices. The meal sounds delicious. I have to go to the city tomorrow for an appointment so you have me in the mood for Tilapia, my favorite "go to" for Omega 3s. I do hope the cardio rehab program goes well for DH.0
-
I had to look up coriander because I found it delicious and have never cooked with it. The leaves of the plant are cilantro and the dried seeds are called coriander. In addition to being tasty, coriander has a whole host of health benefits. Combining with the Omega 3 in the salmon sounds like a win/win. I'll have to get some and see if I can reproduce that salmon dish.
I finished up book discussion and surprisingly, everyone like the Verdon book. I would have been thrilled if only half the group liked it. I was a bit afraid nobody would like it since it's such a different genre from our usual choices. I'm glad to be done as discussion leader and I can sit back, relax and enjoy next month's book.0 -
Helene - that's amazing that your whole group liked the Verdon book!
I'm enjoying the David Baldacci John Puller series very much. I've seen comparisons to Jack Reacher - and I see where they are getting that - but the stories are great and there is one huge difference - Puller has a badge while Reacher is unofficial. Many other differences as well but I can see where someone would get the similarities.
I saw my cardiologist yesterday. She's always polite but you can tell she half thinks I shouldn't be there. My "left branch bundle" - whatever the heck that is - has disappeared off my EKG, which she says is very unusual but could be due to weight loss. She was quite impressed that I'm the same weight I was the last time I saw her even though I admitted I had gained and lost in between. I verified with her what the problem was at the heart CT scan. She had mentioned a possible allergy to the contrast stuff they shoot into your veins which could obviously be problematic for other types of CT scans. I hadn't really focused when she said it so I asked yesterday. She looked at the report and concluded it was the IV beta blockers that caused the problem, a different issue altogether.
Today I need to feed the colonies and do some grocery shopping. I'm trying to improve on the set up at the colonies. The woman who feeds 2 days a week sent me a message that she really likes what I'm doing.
You guys have me hungry for salmon. Maybe I'll break out some KC salmon filets this weekend - I have some in the freezer.
