Skinny people shouldn't give fat people weight loss advice.

If you never had problems touching your toes, or never had a waist over 42 inches. Then I kindly ask you keep your opinion to your self. Lol, yes I am joking kind of.
I do get frustrated with hearing 23 year old hard bodies that haven't had to deal with real weight try to push the calories in calories out mantra. They have no clue what they are talking about they might as well say your fat cause your lazy.
I am sure I was the same way when I was young playing football and running track. Thinking I knew the key to fitness. Lol look at me now.
Drew Manning was one of those peronal trainers that was in great shape pushing people because he thought they were just weak. Then he gained 70 lbs on purpose to see what it was like. He sings a whole new tune now. He wrote a book about it call fit2fat2fit.
What do you think?

I definitely think that CICO makes so much sense to people who are and have always mostly been fit because they have no issues with carbs. I think the issues with carbs start only after we manage to put on some weight (get a fat liver) and the sensitivity changes. It's possible for someone to look fit, but also develop that problem. But they continue to out train the problem until they simply can't anymore.8

I just try and remember that one day, they may end up in my shoes. When that happens, maybe my example will help them then.
I know I've had to eat some crow.
I hated the low carb craze for years.6 -
I'm not sure how old you are, but I remember the years and years when it was rare to see a person who was "fat", we had one in an entire school.
People felt full and stopped eating and didn't want to be called greedy- it was a mindset.
Somehow things changed , As far as advice... when I'm asked about how I dropped the extra weight , my answer is "no sugar-no flour- no rice- no pasta" . Everyone loves that answer, they already know, don't think I've explained the LCHF to anyone IRL.7 -
How true Walker! I used to hate people, that never have been fat, when they look down at you thinking that you're lazy and that's why your fat. These are the people that eat whatever they want and never gain an ounce, and you just look at food and gain 3 lbs...
The other day, I purchased some 60 & 80 lbs bags of concrete at the home improvement store. I had to lift them to put in my cart and again into my trailer and again out of trailer. I thought I was going to die moving them. Then it dawned on me that I weigh 100 lbs less than I did 2 years ago. No wonder I couldn't do anything 2 years ago.
Now if one of those skinny 20 somethings say a word, I'll tell them that I'll go to the hardware store and buy a bag of concrete and we will strap it to their stomach (front side) and tell them to exercise, run, and bend over and pick up things!! That would be a sight to see.
I hope this helps,

There are studies that are showing that metformin may extend life. It extend life cycle of cells. It does this by mimicking the effects of a ketogenic diet.
I wonder what my athletic career would have been like if I would have lived ketogenic?

This is my answer too. If they insist, I may add "lots of eggs, avocado and plenty of olive oil". It's easier to build up on what people already believe.

Unless of course, they are skinny and in great shape now --and were fat at some point in their life... There's a few folks like that in this group (like @DittoDan) and I listen to their advice very carefully.21

I can agree that someone who has never been overweight or struggled to lose weight can understand what it is actually like. They know the basics of what they are taught and those rules can apply to many people, I do feel that more and more are starting to expand their knowledge base to treat each person individually, and those that I've seen in action (mostly on tv) typically recommend to their clients, either low carb or in some cases 0 carb.
One thing I do struggle with now, after losing weight, is the perception others have of me. I get called skinny now and for those who didn't know me when I was heavier, my advice has little value put on it. Sometimes I can tell they are discounting what I'm saying, because I'm skinny, how could I know. I no longer feel the need to tell them I was heavier before, to give myself some validation. Just keep that in mind when your talking to a skinny person, you may not know what they've been through to come to the mindset they have now. Plus, you're gonna be one of them someday11 -
Yep, this is one of the things I absolutely hate about the main forums. It has improved over the past couple years, but there is still this hard-headed, closed-minded assumption by so many active users that CICO is simple, infallible, and works universally for everybody.
These users just think... if you aren't losing weight, just eat less and exercise more. I know from personal experience it doesn't work that way. If your experiences show that CICO is not that simple, they will argue with your experience. They will argue they are lying on your food diary or that you are over-reporting exercise (even if your only exercise is from your Fitbit, which a new study from Japan now has shown under-estimate actual calories out, though by a small amount that is likely the CO while showering and charging when Fitbit isn't being worn). If you are doing everything right and not seeing results (i.e. CICO isn't working), there is an incredible wave of vitriol from members who are fit (some of which always were fit).
I never had a 42 inch waist, but I'm fairly short and was at a 38 inch waist at my heaviest. I realize my 60 lbs. overweight was very little compared to some. And I get the sense from the forums that weight loss is really easy for most people. But I know for sure that it is not that simple for everybody.5 -

It certainly wasn't for me. I've just started, but I'm hoping THIS works. I've tried eating "clean", I've counted calories, weighed and measured food, and couldn't lose weight on 1200-1500 calories a day. I was so concerned about it, I went to the doctor, and they checked my thyroid, which is a LITTLE sluggish, but still within normal range. The doctor just shrugged and said that either I was under counting my calories, or I needed to eat more calories to lose weight. I assured him that eating more calories would be a disaster.
The only way I was able to lose weight is on a VERY low calorie diet of 600-900 a day, and that just wasn't sustainable for me. I did manage to do it right before I met my husband, but a normal day for me was Breakfast: one apple Lunch: low cal soup and 100 calorie popcorn Dinner: Tuna over a salad with a small amount of dressing. That was a 600 calorie day, and I had been doing this for over a year. I was a size 8....but I still weighed 160 lbs. I'm 5'4.
I'd give anything to weigh 160 lbs now.
I'm reeeeaaallllllyyyyy hoping this works.
So far I've dropped 7 lbs in less than a week.

Sorry, but discussion about the main MFP forums is strictly forbidden, per community/group rules. As far as this group is concerned, the main forums do not exist.
This is this thread's first and only warning. If it comes up again, we'll be forced to close it (and I don't really want to do that, because the rest of the discussion is good).
Thanks guys.

It is frustrating when someone who's genetically programmed to be slim believes that all heavy people are lazy. I believe they just don't know any better. The flip side is that there certainly are overweight people who are lazy and make poor choices with foods. I work with one, so I can attest to that; it's not to say that this person doesn't want to lose weight - she just doesn't make an effort for it. Judging anyone who is overweight is stupid, though - you don't know where they are in their journey. At 300 pounds they could be celebrating having lost their first 100. How would you ever know that? You wouldn't. So best to just assume that if someone is overweight it's likely that they're aware and would like to change it.
Now turn the same theory around, if you will. I've lost 70 pounds and most people I encounter have no idea. My size now is fairly average (about a size 10). Being on the side of this where I'm close to my goal it's SUPER frustrating when I say I want to lose 10-15 more pounds and an overweight person is annoyed by that. I've done the work, don't judge me for wanting to finish it. I know what I need to do to reach my optimal size, just because I look fine to you doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement, ya know? Double edge sword...14 -

Yup.
Anyway, the title of the thread should really be, "if you haven't walked a mile in my shoes, shut yer yap."
I'm not as thin as I would like, but I know people who have never met me before would look at me and think I'd never had a weight problem. Boy have I. I've lost 100lb. And I've kept about 92lb of it off.
People have their own worldview, shaped by their own experience, and until they experience those things not in their previous experience, they can't truly understand them. I used to hate thin people. Now that I'm one, I know that some of them work very hard and do make sacrifices to stay that way.

I recently found my high school class of 1963 yearbook online. It was just as I remembered: very few of us were even plump and there was NOBODY who even approached obese. The difference between those pictures and the kids I see around town was very, very depressing.

Congratulations on your weight loss. What kind of diet are doing?
LCHF at the moment. I may tweak it before it's over with. lol
I ubderstand, for me low carb has been a journey. I went from atkins, to LCHF, now I am Keto. I anticipate that when I get to 165 I will do paleo to maintain.2 -
I wish I'd had this problem. I can't ever recall anyone thin giving me advice on how to lose weight. What I always received was ridicule, jokes, slams, avoidance and disdain. I was a kid growing up much to much overweight in the 80's and early 90's. I was about 20 and going into a Wal Mart when a guy in a truck drove past me and yelled "get out of the way you whale". I'm in my 40's now and don't think I've even forgotten the color of the truck (it was red). Personally, someone giving me advice today, even unsolicited, would be so much better than someone like red truck guy...5

So I'm a tad confused as to the difference.0 -
I've never had to lose more than 20 pounds, but I have kept it off for about 20 years, and that's something. I think it's possible for skinny people who are aware of their own eating habits to give good advice. Just saying "I've never had a problem," without understanding and explaining how that is, isn't helpful, and insulting people who are overweight is worse.5

Lchf is basically anything below 150g carbs and replacing those carbs with fat.
Keto is basically anything below 50g carbs (or whatever it takes to maintain the metabolic state of ketosis) and replacing those carbs with fat.8 -

They're likely doing low carb high protein, but many of those fb groups are not worth the time.2
