Welcome to 2017 for all of us!!

And it's a GOOD time and place and for all because as Seehe just said (and yes I moved a quote from you here to start us off Susan because I think its an excellent reminder for us that it IS a great time beause as you said (and I quote!)

Seehe said:

"we are starting this new year with our plans of healthy habit changes,,, from such a BETTER place than when we first started!!

I (WE) already have so many more healthy habits already ingrained , that now it's more like tweaking instead of a major overhaul."

You are SO right Susan, and that is a wonderful realization for us as we begin working on what we want for ourselves in this new year... that EACH of us have come so far from where we all started when we came here.... and because we've already done the hardest work - learning what we need to know to get what we want, and learning how to make those new habits and small changes - that's already behind us (phew) so that takes a lot of the apprehension and "oh oh" stress off .. this year it's going to be about applying and tweaking what we DO already know - and looking forward to working on even more new habits and small changes that WILL get each of us what we want for ourselves!

and how awesome will THAT be, ladies?? YAYYYYYYYYYYYYYY US!!! HERE'S TO US in 2017 !

====================== ================= =================

So, for me i did the scale hop this morning and am about to go change my stats in the check in. Although I did not reach my target goal by the end of the year, i AM happy that i AM in a much better place than i was this time last year, and ready to move forward into getting what i want for ME in weight management this year!!

In keeping with my own particular plan to add one new habit in both diet/movement every 30 days, and going public with it (as such lol).

Today I weigh 162.5 lbs. My goal weight is still 137 lbs. So this year my only "goal" weight wise is to lose the excess weight I carry and get to my goal weight.

For the month of January, I am adding two new habits: 1) portion control at every single meal and 2) taking the stairs 7 flighTs down and up. I have set reminders on my cellphone for the stairs and hand written a sign for my kitchen cupboard with a smiley face that says " EXCELLENT job on portion control today!!! and I don't plan to have to take it down any day

I am going to focus on these two habits and do them every single day for the next 30 days. Every. single. day.

ok.. I'm done LOL!

Looking forward to hearing what everyone else has in mind and is planning for their weight management this year!!

and may I say again..

YAYYYYYYYYYY US!!! :)

    Happy New Year Hatters!!

I've updated my ticker weight and it's not good but I'm not going to stress about that. I'm going to focus on the positives...like the fact that y'all are absolutely correct when you say that we know what we need to do so the learning curve isn't too steep. I know how I got back up to this weight. I gave up. Plain and simple. I rationalized my eating habits and stopped stepping on the scale. I let my depression over my knee pain get the upper hand. So now I've been given the opportunity of a brand new year to get it right.

Happy new year and happy new start everyone!

I saw this today and it made me laugh:

    Happy New Years to all!

I ended my year in love with San Diego what a beautiful city. Presently I am in San Antonio and should be back home tonight.

Sue, I am glad you got the antibiotics, you might need an inhaler like for asthma (e.g., Proventil) to clear up what seems like phlegm in the lungs. You might have to ask for it because doctors usually only recognize wheezing for the only use of those inhalers but I have bronchitis, and it helps me. Otherwise, I will cough nonstop.

My New Year's commitment is to plug exercising back into my plans and to try again to stick to recording my food. It is what helped me in the past.

Good for you Snoozie for reaching your goals for 2016!! Snoozie and Suzy great plans for 2017 we can do this.

sUZY.. I actually laughed out loud at your pic cause that's SO me LOLOL! and Im glad to hear you're heading in a positive direction after recognizing where you where.. it IS a new year and like you, i'm staying positive and focusing on as Susan said, "tweaking" and DOING what I already know rather than having to start from scratch.. phew!!

Milove- good on ya for deciding to return to logging; I can't disagree it worked for me as well! I didn't actually make my goal for 2016 tho... but not looking back just pumped for a new year!

I incorporated both new habits yesterday; to be honest thought the 2nd time on the stairs was gonna kill me tho LOLOL.. but just reinforced the need to keep doing it!! Did well with my portion control too.. altho that was a battle with dinner as I made a nice roast beast dinner.. I WANTED seconds badly... even tho I wasn't hungry at all after finishing the first amount!! But I restrained myself ha. I did notice tho I am still eating way too fast; a habit from work where you have to gulp down what you can when you can.. so i'll keep an eye on that!

Will pop in later to see what's happening in the hood!

Suzy Q- ROFL at you resolution photo- that is soooo me , too! Glad to know I'm not alone. and I love your idea about focusing on the positives :) i

Milove- sounds like you are having some fun travels, lucky you! I love San Diego, too. I think your goals of plugging exercise back in and logging are great. I may use the same as soon as I get over this WP. Thanks for the advise on the inhaler. I actually have a rescue inhaler and was also given a steroid one this time as well because my rescue inhaler wasn't helping like it normally did . Unfortunately they didn't help that much which was unusual. Luckily the antibiotics have kicked in, though.

Snooozie- your motivation is inspiring indeed! You've got this! Your stairs goal reminds me of a much smaller version of that goal I had once which was a success. I had been hiking across a stream in Maui , and had to step up onto different rocks here and there. I was shocked when I went to lift up my leg, but it didn't lift. That was most disturbing to me, so when I returned and was back to work, I started taking this big step up onto the parking lot ramp from the side instead of walking around to the entrance of the ramp. I did this only twice a day, but every day, and voila I got my hip movement back. It felt so good to have succeeded, and I know you are going to be the champion of those stairs! Sounds like you have a great start with that portion control, too!

I am taking one month at a time and heck, at this point , even one day at a time while I am slowly recovering. So my focus for this month has to be on getting over the WP. My challenge will be to balance rest with activity.i am chomping at the bit to get back to being active and productive, but I have been warned that if I don't continue to take it easy this month I will regress. So my 2 habit changes this month are ; 1.listen to my body and don't over due things and 2.no eating while watching TV .

    Happy New Year Dear Hatters!

    ~ Susan

sorry Susan meant to reply to your post as well as the pic, but the tub guy showed up (hmmm that sounds WAY better than it really was... re caulking the mess in there is all lol) I love that big step thing you did...!!!

I am SO glad you are listening to your body and remembering what it's been thru for the past few weeks with being so sick for long.. I hope you are feeling some better but it IS going to take a while for your body to fully recover so i'm glad that's one of your focuses !!! and love the 2nd one.. perfectly doable and a tuff one (for me anyway!) so excellent decisions for jan in my opinion!!

heading for a nap (I hope); as I start a week of midnights tonite... did a nice stroll down at the lake after tub guy left - was still really lovely altho cold but not bitter winds so quite enjoyed it.. but am gonna enjoy a long nap MORE me thinks!! Will be able to do my stairs in the morning coming home... and then maybe after I wake up .

love the new pic btw susan!

Snoozie I love that saying! My daughter is starting on her weight loss journey (after gaining a lot of weight when she quit smoking a year ago). People keep telling her everything she has to stop eating and it's overwhelming her. I'm going to send that to her.

Susan I hope you're feeling better soon. I love the idea of one month at a time and not eating while watching tv! That is my downfall in the evening. It's kind of like Pavlov's dog...if I'm watching tv then I should be snacking.

Y'all always have such great insights. I'm eating way too fast also, so that's a good goal for this month. I managed to walk the past two days even with all the rain we're getting. I seriously want...no! I AM going to meet my goal weight this year.

Suzy - if anyone gets how your daughter is feeling I think we all do here. honestly I was feeling very overwhelmed myself coming up to the new year thinking crap I gotta start over... but Susan's post and the reading I did on just making new habits really helped me feel LESS crazed and quite positive actually - we've all been where your daughter is and i'm glad she has you in her corner - with your own experiences you know exactly how hard it is starting out, and how overwhelming it all can be, AND how not to preach at her but instead encourage and support.. so i'm glad she's got you!

Awesome on getting the walking in with the rain - i'm impressed.. I honestly only got mine in because we had a couple of beautiful winter days.. with nights starting I know im either gonna have to suck up the treadmill as the temps are supposed to dip big time end of week... or get my butt bundled up and out there!! ha.. and isn't it funny the Pavlov thing.. the "habits" we have???? i'm the same.. if i'm home in the evening and watching tv I "should" be having some snackage simply out of habit... so we just have to make NEW habits... slowly add em in :0 Even simply switching to every OTHER night for a snack is adding a new habit... and i'm am WITH YOU on going to meet my GW this year girl!! Onwards and upwards!

I found myself really noticing how fast I was eating dinner and slowed way down. I made an effort to put down my fork while I chewed instead of loading up my fork for the next bite. It made a huge difference.

Thanks for your nice words Snoozie. We all need some support on this journey.

Any tips on how to convince your stomach that it can't possibly be hungry just thirty minutes after dinner?! Mentally I know that I can't be hungry! I guess I'll try a cup of herbal tea. Ugh! Thank goodness I got rid of all the sweets!

Well, it's taken me a while to check in. I've been a bit MIA recently, but it's not all bad and I do still weigh and check in every day. I've had gains and losses over the year, but have finished it at a lower weight than last year, so that's something! If I hadn't got a handle on it back in August, I think it was, then I think I would have kept gaining. So although I'm not where I'd like to be, it could have been so much worse.

Well done on the new habits, Snoozie! MIlove, good idea to go back to what's worked in the past. And on the slowing down eating, Suzy - I am quite a fast eater, and have been noticing this with my thinner friends, that I tend to finish first. So I might follow your example, instead of acting like somebody's going to steal my food if I don't get it down my gob as quickly as poss.

    Good morning ladies,
I am 183 lbs. Have to accept and change my ticker again. I was able to input my food yesterday and this morning.
Yes I am going to try to eat slower, I always feel like I am in race to complete eating my food and then I want a second plate or alittle extra of this or that, my father use to read at the table and take forever to eat. Maybe I will try that.

I wonder if eating fast is a characteristic that overweight people have in common? Vailara...lol at acting like someone's going to steal your food!

I'm heading out for a muddy walk and then grocery shopping. Hopefully I won't be tracking mud through the store. I have my menu planned for the next week and my list made out. If I don't buy the junk then I can't eat the junk!

Milove, it killed me to reset my ticker on the 1st but I did it. I finally said, "who are you fooling? Certainly not yourself!" So...it's a fresh new year and a new start on achieving my goals. This year I'm going to do it! We ALL are!!!

    Hi ho Hatters!!

As usual on the first night shift i'm up early... I COULD be doing chores around here but that doesn't seem to be happening lol... oh well it's much more fun coming here anyway!!

I did my stairs up this morning and I am NOT going to lie.. I had to stop and rest at the 4th, 5th and 6th floors!! i'm putting it down to sheer exhaustion from having been up 24 hrs.. ya.. i'm sticking with that story!! But i'm gonna keep at the 2x a day for the full month.. did ok on portion control but ate more than usual cause of the nite shift but i'm ok with that.. I had dinner around 8 and then spaced out my sandwichfrom around midnite 1/2 every 2 hrs then had a protein bar around 4am .. it usually takes me a few shifts before I can face tuna at 3am ha.

The whole eating fast thing might just be something indeed related to the weight thing - I can TOTALLY relate to everyone's own experiences.. mine comes from years of gulping something down asap at work when you can - and also I have been known to have the "someone might steal my food" moment too!! Or like being at a buffet.. for whatever reason my head is like "you have to eat your money's worth".. omg.... and I think miloves comment about how eating so fast leads to second helpings etc...

so while I won't add another new habit for this month, I AM going to start being cognizant of how fast I eat now.. and perhaps make that my new habit for Feb.. I tend to eat while doing other things.. either at work or at home, i.e. watching TV or reading or whatever.. so it might be a good thing for me to actually focus on my meal itself.. taste it, enjoy it, and breathe between forkfuls like Suzy said!

And yep also to not wanting to hit the ENTER button on the reset of my ticker... but for me I had to let go of seeing the pounds I lost when I first came here.. they are immaterial at the moment (not overall just right now lol)... and for me, I had to see where I am, and what I want to be from right now.. it still sucked tho so its' kinda nice to know everyone else hated it too .. in that "misery loves company" kinda way :)

Susan - hope you are still well on the way to recovery and feeling better each day!

Vail - good to see ya !! And YAY YOU on being at a lower weight now than you were this time last year... well done you!! and awesome mentally to start the new year knowing that!

Milove - I had to laugh at your dad reading at the table.. we had books EVERYWHERE growing up... big family of readers but my mother always used to say she should put the bible in the bathroom because then it would get read by everyone!! but as already said above, I think the whole eating too fast thing is def something we might have overlooked in our journeys!

Suzy - I honestly think you might have something about the characteristic of eating fast being related to weight - I dunno how we overlooked that on our journeys but since a couple of us are gonna keep an eye on that aspect of it I think it will be very interesting to see the results. kudos on the muddy walk and meal planning too... we are ABSOLUTELY gonna make all our goals in the hatters this year!!!

oh and one more habit I AM gonna add? SAVING my post as I go and editing it lol.. I already lost a tiny chunk of this one so note to self hahaha)

Gail - oh wowwwwwwwwwww only 18 lbs to onederland??? holy moly girl you will DEFINITELY get there i have NO dbout.. and oh the party we will have in here!! Epecially with your goals you've set.. all doable and will absolutely help get you there - great on the boot camp and the stairs.. you WERE my inspiration for that new habit btw!! and because it's something i can do easily without leaving my building (yup that was a big part of it over winter lol). and i love the yoga idea.. actually I've been seeing some healing yoga videos online.. short easy moves to get you started for the day so to speak.. not too long and not too difficult and i think they would work for night time too.. altho i'm sure there is prolly a ot of bedtime yoga vids too.. super job in setting specific things that are going to help you get to what you want for yourself.. well done!!

okey dokey... the carpet cleaners are finaly coming tomorrow morning - YAY.. that's the last of the work from the flood i had in the unit over the holidays.. figures i moved everything back furniture wise over the weekend lol.. oh well at least there isn't much as i used it as a time to get rid of some stuff too.. which is currently all piled in the sunroom of course haaaaaaaa.. but i'll tackle that mountain after nites!!

hope everyone is having a great week and doing something every day no matter how small or how big, to get you where you wanna be health wise!!

back to beddy bye for meeeeeee.... later!

    Good Morning everyone,
Well I am feeling good that I am taking off what I should not have gained in the first place. I have been keeping up with my diary although I had to go back this morning and complete it.
I want to at least try to keep my commitment.

Do anyone know about the pedometer on the phone and if so which one might be the most efficient?

I am glad Snoozie that you are getting the needed work done, I know how it feel to not have things the way they should be at home. You have great tolerance.

Man alive I'm having trouble breaking that eating in front of the tv habit ! I think there are a couple of factors contributing though. Since I've been sick I haven't had the energy or motivation to cook dinners. At Christmas I cooked plenty so I would have lots of leftovers to reheat in the microwave and bought some microwave quickies to eat, but guess what, my microwave died on Xmas and the new one can't be installed until the 13th. Plus I haven't had much of an appetite , so ended up just munching on bags of popcorn for dinner several nights , and what better place to do that but in front of the TV? The popcorn is all gone now, though, and I'm not going to buy more. My appetite is returning , so I really need to get back to cooking dinners that I eat at the table before I turn on the tv. My first round of antibiotics made me about 50% better, and I started a second Zpac two days ago. Sure hope it knocks it out comoletely. My doctor was out lthis week, but he will be back next week and I have an appointment Tuesday, and I am hoping he will give me something stronger. Right now I have total laryngitis as part of this whole thing, and I need my voice as I am supposed to start back tutoring on Monday.
On the positive side, all of this has reminded me just how important my health is, and to never take it for granted, so I am motivated to develop even more healthy habits! I am looking forward to having the energy and lung capacity to walk the dogs again and cook some decent meals!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

Milove, I wear a Fitbit HR charge before that I wore a Fitbit zip. I think you can get the zip for about $60. It just counts steps. I like mine. I'm not sure how accurate it is but it's a great motivator.

Susan, I'm so glad you're feeling a bit better. It's so hard to get back to cooking especially if you don't really have the energy. Maybe try something simple like soup or stews to start. Yep, this whole eating in front of the tv is a hard habit to break. I started a jigsaw puzzle to do while I watch so that my hands are busy. It's helping a bit.

I'm having a really hard time with feeling hungry all the time. Even right after I eat! Wednesday night I totally blew it and then felt sick to my stomach. Why am I so hungry?!?!!! I'm trying to stick to 1200 calories to give me a jumpstart on the weight loss. Maybe I should up my calories to 1400? I guess I'll try that for a few days and see how that works. Trial and error...it's a constant challenge but one I'm determined to conquer this year.

We're expecting snow in Atlanta tonight and icing this weekend so I'm heading out in a few minutes to try and get my walk in before it starts. I need to get back to the gym but haven't made it yet. I'll work on that next week for sure! Snow! In Atlanta! That's not something you see everyday! Ha!

Thank you for the advise on the fitbit will look into it Snoozie and Suzy.

Susan I agree we have to be thankful and that is a motivator eating cleaner.
However, I don't know how healthy or unhealthy, but I added to my diet this new year Sambuca. My daughter brought it back as a gift from Greece and I tried it besides loving liquorice, I found out that it helps me to sleep better, I am not tossing and turning and feeling stress and depressed about my life (was trying to stay away from sleeping pills and antidepressant), and I am becoming more regular in the bathroom without having to take a laxative. What do you guys think? I only take an ounce at night.
  • suzyqholland
    suzyqholland Posts: 1,368 Member
Our neighbors in Amsterdam introduced me to Sambuca. Yowza! It was strong! But delicious! I think everything in moderation is okay. My mother-in-law drinks a glass of wine every night. She swears by it and she just turned 89!

Milove.. I don't see anything wrong with a shot of samuca at night; especially if it's giving you awesome results all over from sleep to avoiding other medications. lots of studies have actually shown that one drink every day can be better for us than abstaining.. course that study may have been funded by the liquor association but it's out there lol!

Suzy - I don't think it would hurt to up your calories to 1400 at all.. or to keep logging at 1200 BUT eat when you find you are actually hungry... even if its just a snack or a small amount of something... I know when I first started my portion control and eating smaller amounts I felt actual hunger.. which I think is ok actually ... because I think sometimes I eat just because it's "time" for a meal.. but I started spacing out my food and eating when I actually felt hunger rather than when it was "time to eat".. and weirdly it did seem altho I was eating more I WAS losing some weight.. as you said its a trial and error this time around I find... so will keep paws crossed you find what works for you for the moment! snow in Atlanta.. wowsa lol... we actually look like spring here altho its freezing haven't had any snow for a while so it's all green/brown grass.. kinda weird for us but i'm ok with it - makes travelling to work way easier!

Susan I hope the 2nd round kicks the crap outta that virus and you start feeling truly better all over soon..!!!

Only 3 more night shifts thank goodness.. i'm suffering from a little dehydration and lack of movement this shift and its causing a few .. lets say intestinal probs lol.. so I know until they are "resolved" (ahem) I wont be weighing in hahahahaha..................................but have been getting up thru the shift and going up the staircase at work periodically too to make sure im keeping with my new habits... its only 3 flights up from the parking at work but I do try to get in at least 2x up it :) I don't freak if idont make it every single day on both tho.. new habits take time to incorporate so good thing i'm giving it the full month :)

Susan, I really hope you're completely better soon - this has really dragged on! I'm glad the treatment seems to be working though, finally. Funny to think of you just having popcorn for tea - no wonder, if you've not been well, you probably haven't felt up to cooking a proper meal. I find cooking tiring when I'm not well. Good idea about eating a meal at the table and that's it. I really struggle with not eating after the evening meal, even when I have no problems during the day.

Milove, if 1oz Sambuca is working for you, then great! I know they say that drinking alcohol before bed means you don't sleep properly, but sometimes I find that if it's just a very small amount, it seems to help. I think it's fantastic that you've found something that works for you! I value sleep very highly.

Snoozie, I feel for you doing the shifts. When I did night shifts it played havoc with my regularity if you know what I mean. My body seemed to completely rebel against it! Great work on the new habits!

I have not been good recently - to be honest, I've felt tired and stressed. My son has been visiting, which has been lovely, but I end up eating more when he's here. He goes tomorrow and it's back to the grindstone, despite a lack of enthusiasm, I've got to admit. But you ladies are so inspiring, that you're motivating me!

Yes, so far so good, thanks everyone for the response.

Haha, I use to works nights for years Snoozie, I was always having intestinal movement problems that have stayed with me.

Vail, I think it's okay to indulge and enjoy your son. And you can be super strict afterward.
