On day 7 of dayshift today - and had appts after work a few days so been hitting the sack by 8pm most nights - sorry haven't posted.. have popped in and read everything and promise tonite to write - love your plan suzy btw.. I have been doing pretty good with cutting back slowly.. logging and seeing what I am actually eating is helping - no weight loss but happy I seem to be getting back on track slowly but surely!1
-
Hi, Hatters, Looks like all of you are doing great!!
I am still struggling with the chip and sugar demon... It's going to take a bad A1C to get me to stop....I guess..
I do good 2/3 of the day ad then I get home late and hit the snacks.
Kido's on getting back on track, Suzanne!!
Suzy, excellent work with the calories...Enjoy your company!!
Happy Birthday, Susan!!2 -
Well done, Suzy! I'm not going to offer advice, because I'm so bad at this sort of thing myself, but best of luck - enjoy the company!2
-
Happy birthday Susan! I hope you're okay and that you have a good day. Let us know how things are going. I've been thinking of you and your mom and my heart goes out to you both.
I haven't been updating my ticker lately to show my ups and downs but I'm finally (FINALLY!!!) below the weight I had on there! Yay!!!! That gives me a little boost of motivation for this weekend.
Gail, I hear ya on the late night snacking. I have had to force myself to not eat after dinner. I struggle with it every night. I've been drinking lots of water and hot herbal tea...it helps a bit. Going to bed earlier has also been helpful. I can pass on the chips but oh! the sweets!!! I love anything sweet!
Snoozie, it sounds like you're taking all the right steps! Being aware of what you're eating is so eye opening! Not seeing a loss can be devastating to your motivation but hang in there and it WILL show results. Sometimes (at our age) I think our bodies say, "oh! Wait a minute...I better hang on to this weight because I have no idea what she's going to put me through this time!" Hahaha!
Thanks Vail! I'm really really going to try and stay on track and enjoy myself....sometimes I feel like those are two opposing goals!
Have a great weekend Hatters!!!2 -
Happy belated Birthday, Susan! Sorry for missing it - I think I didn't notice the extra page last time I looked. Hope you had a good one!
Great to hear that you are doing well with cutting back, Snoozie. It sounds so easy when you put it like that - ha ha! But it takes such motivation to stick with it, so well done! The weight loss might slow over time. Mine was always very slow, even when I was successfully losing. It didn't really show week to week, but I would notice it in my report chart.
It's fantastic that you're below your ticker weight, Suzy! And yes, staying on track and enjoying yourself - I wish there was an alternative universe where we could just relax and enjoy, but somehow cancel out the weight gain!
I have been relaxing this week as my son is home, and it's just amazing how easily I gain, especially when it's so difficult to lose! I'm five pounds up this week, and I still hadn't lost the Christmas weight yet. Will be back on track on Monday, I hope. I think I'll go straight into fasting as it's so easy (no dilemmas over cheating, etc., you're either eating or not eating!).0 -
Non-scale victory: no alcohol last night and only half a burger today for lunch. We all went hiking and I'm having pizza for dinner so I'm hoping it will cancel each other out. I was down another half pound this morning but I won't count it until after the weekend.... I'm really hoping not to go up on the scale.
Enjoy your son's visit Vail! Dont beat yourself up over the gain...it's a small blip and you'll get it off quickly.2 -
suzy - awesome news!! its the woosh factor - your hard work yu've been doing is paying off now by finally showing up on the scale - total high 5 on the 1/2 burger and hike - you're doing fab in having some treats but keeping it to just a reasonable amount (or as we like to say in my family, anything that "serves 4 serves 1 of us") but if you stick to reasonable portions of anything and everything I bet you'll be just fabulous!!!
vail - im TRYING on the cutting back. my logging shows im still eating too much but at least im eating better choices.. right now the biggest battle is cutting out the sugar and carbs and that's my focus.. I just keep looking at the cupboards and seeing the 7.2 tho and that seems to be helping ... I still have my moments tho; have not tamed the dragon yet but wont give up the fight! hope you enjoy your visit with your son!!!!0 -
Hello all of my hatters' friends, I am feeling better, sorry for the MIA. I got caught up with the flu, got over it and finished up at work and I am off for a week. Thanks for the well wishes. Snoozie I think you did a great job with the heart in the snow to us. And yes Susan we can do this together. Sorry to hear your A1C number Snoozie, a few bright spots. It is type 2 which means you can beat those numbers through what you are doing now. Reduce the carbs and increase the exercise. You have to look at the carbs not just the calories. In other words for example you could eat pork skins as bad as that seems rather than potato chips because pork skins have no carbs and it will not run your sugar up like a bag of chips will.
I like the changing our habits Val, and adding willpower to that. I over ate while sick and got caught up in the king cake just a little, but I am back up in the scale numbers again and I am about to cruise to the Bahamas for three days, I am in Florida and already have indulge in alittle over eating. Point I am making cannot do anything about it now I am going to try to stay away from desert and no eating after my three meals. When I get back I will set my scale back and start over.
Snoozie and Suzy keep up the good work, keep on rocking it. I will join you after three days.

so glad you're feeling better Milove - Bahamas!! awesome - i'm actually thinking of going there next feb to escape winter cause I've never been there and always wanted to go so look forward to hearing all about it!! One of my friends is trying to talk me into a cruise too... but I dunno lol.. so i'll be waiting to hear how ya love it
I don't believe I have ever had a pork skin in my life lol... I've heard about them from my friends in the States but altho I think they do sell there here in Canada as " pork rinds " it isn't a popular thing here. but appreciate the info and yes i'm re carb-educating myself to the 15/snack 30 meal rules of engagement again in my case I know too its the exercise I have to really step up it has a huge impact on blood sugars too (I was gonna use BS for blood sugar acronym but realized it has another meaning altogether hahaha..
I tried a new recipe last night from a friend; roasted a bunch of veggies then later laid them out on a sheet of puff pastry and topped with a wee bit of herbed goat cheese all over.. and rolled it up and baked then sliced it.. was very yummy and the puff pastry is only at 19 carbs per 1/4 of the whole sheet.. which is about a serving so fell well within my carb world and filled with veg. def will add that to my repertoire and would be a lovely side to a salad for lunch (besides looking really good when it's sliced lol). And made my goal of trying some new healthier receipes at least once a month.. just under the wire for feb!! hahaha
rock on hatters
Susan - haven't seen you for a while; been thinking about you since your birthday and wondering how things are going with your mom; sending hugs and hope all is ok.1 -
Your recipe sounds delicious, Snoozie. I love roasted veg. I sometimes put a little bit of chorizo in when roasting, which would fit well with low carb, but not so well with calories! And probably not the best healthwise, but I only put in a little bit. But would also be delicous in your recipe, I think.
We have "pork scratchings" here, which sounds like the same thing as pork skins - literally pork skin, cooked and salted, and quite appetising if you like fatty, salty, crunchy food.
My superfood recently has been lentils - I've previously used them in curries, patties, etc., but using them a lot in soups at the moment. They make a vegetable soup into a main meal. They are so cheap and easy, and supposedly healthy!
Anyway, I've packed my son off back to uni. He's currently staying at the seaside (he moves around every few months), so we had a lovely, blowy walk along the seafront and up around the cliffs when I dropped him off. And I have to say, I was feeling my extra weight when I was walking uphill - well, possibly the extra weight combined with recovering from the recent virus. Back to dieting for me, having gained seven pounds over the past week or so!
1 -
Vail I LOVE chorizo ... and that would be awesome even if I just used it sparingly to add a little kick.. I love roasted veg too all by themselves.. what I don't like is seeing an entire cookie sheet full of veg reduced to a tiny little amount after it roasts hahaha.. its like wilted spinach.. looks like you are putting a ton in the pan but when it wilts its a teeny little pile!
I SO hear you on the walking uphill btw... im astounded and horrified with getting back to my walking at how quickly my endurance has dropped; but I know as long as I keep at it it will come back. I was going thru my profile pics and found my one from when I hit my goal weight... and realized how LONG ago it was and how long I've been slowly regaining and crusing... AND I remember how great I felt at that weight so when I get back to work i'm gonna print that out and add it to another cupboard lol. or the fridge!!
I looked at my calendar the other day and realized I have an apt with the kinesiologist (sp?) from the diabetes management centre next week - I made it back in November and that was the earliest I could get then. it will be interesting to see what she says about the exercise stuff now that I know I have a tear in my shoulder muscle what she can recommend other than walking!
After a couple of weeks of logging what i'm actually eating, and slowly cutting out the crap.. this week im going to set an actual daily calorie goal of 1500 and stay within it, see how that goes. If I can go the whole week within it i'll drop it to 1450 next week, etc etc to see where I start losing weight. I am still finding it a ROYAL pain in the butt logging... but... suck it up buttercup lol...
have a good week hatters1 -
Well its the last day of Feb .. hard to believe 2 months into the new year already!
I hopped on the scale this morning before the start of March (woo hoo.. almost spring!) and I'm finally back to my last logged weight... I refused to change it til I got back there.. i'm actually 2ounces under it hahahahaha.. of course that only means im back to "only" 25 lbs to lose... sigh... but its ok.. one pound or ounce at a time. at least the scale has finally started going the "right" way.
we're getting a couple of days of rain coming up then back to winter so I think I will head down to the lake now since i'm already awake.. altho I missed the 30 seconds of sunshine we had already ha.1 -
Ooh, congratulations on the 2 ounces under! It's good news, no matter how little! Good luck with the plan. 1500 sounds good - when I was logging and eating 1500 it felt more like a normal amount of food. Sadly, it's now above the amount I can lose on! But I like the idea of dropping the calories until you find that sweet spot. Hopefully 1500 will be right and you won't even have to drop!
Good luck with your kinesiologist. I hope you get something useful out of the appointment.1 -
thanks vail - it will be trial and error... and I had a huge error last night... bought a starbucks expresso brownie.. theory being 1/2 last night with my coffee after dinner and 1/2 tonite ... well you know I ended up eating the whole thing.. and when I logged it? holy cow .. 450 calories.. SO NOT WORTH IT!! plus it kicked me up to almost 2000 calories for the day... I almost fainted.. I should have before I ate it then I would have been unconscious and unable to scarf it down
anyway... lesson learned lol I have come to realize in the winter I like my "treat" (and yes I still plan to incorporate small amounts of things that are not the best choices but that I enjoy) anyway in winter I like something "baked" with my coffee after dinner.. not chocolate or a candy or something like that.. so I picked up some "Shasta" organic chocolate cookies made with cocao.. they are small and 7 cookies in a serving only has 12 carbs and 120 calories... so my compromise til spring arrives lol
today will NOT be a 2000 calorie day my friends!!2 -
Woo hoo !! Snoozie , on getting under your logged last weight!! I knew you would get there soon!
I am an addict for Pork rinds lately. the ones with red pepper added.

Hi there I am back staying in Fort Lauderdale until tomorrow flying back to New Orleans in the morning. The cruise was great a little rough waters the first night but smooth out after that. Had a great time. Too much food totally off my mfp diet.
Snoozie, I am amazed at your projection, I remember before all of this carbs counting back in the late 70s and 80s the way diabetes were control was putting everyone on a 1500 calorie diet. If you wanted potatoes you would have to substitute it for bread or rice. You only could have one selection of a starch on your plate. If the doctors wanted you on a real strict diet they would reduce it to 1200 calories. According to MFP, I am on a 1480 and I remember before as I lost weight my calorie count went down to a little over 1200. I just looked up the 15/snack 30 meal rules it sounds interesting.
Gail I give the pork rinds to my diabetic kids at school when they need a snack so that their sugar can stay within normal range or at least close to it.1 -
so glad you had a great trip milove... was this your first cruise and if so would you do it again? just getting opinions as I've never been and might consider one from all the lovely things i'm hearing!
the 15/30 is GRAMS remember (i'm Canadian ergo the grams lol) and the "new rules" if you will from the DMC here is actually a range for snacks and meals - I can't remember the snack range maybe 15-20? but the meal one is def 30-45g per meal.. but these days it seems to be portion sizes rather than strictly carbs that is the main push; eating large quantities not only spikes the BS, but also your body takes so long to digest it all that it keeps the BS precarious for a lot longer, rather than smaller, easily digestible meals even if higher carb. The whole starch thing is still a biggie too tho.. weirdly a lot of things we wouldn't normally consider a starch tho have made the list now when choosing which ones to have.. .. like milk !! (even tho its not technically a starch it falls in the "white food" category like bread, rice, potato.. any white food lol).
I was at 1200 following the MFP rules when I lost most of mine I think Milove. at least according to my old diaries.. but I don't really want to go that low again however.. if I don't start using up some of the cals I take in and burning em off I may have to lol.
nice to have you back! safe trip home from florida!

Was this your first cruise, milove or are you a seasoned cruiser? I would love to go, but all the horror stories has my husband convinced he would never go.
I' m eating them when I get home for a snack to curb my appetite....I think it is helping...not too sure yet.
.......cause I am one of the ones who eats too big a meal at dinner , and as Snoozie says it spikes my BG, too and that is not good.... but unfortunately I will always be a big portion girl...just have to find things low carb to fill up on..

This is my first real cruise, I have done the two hr cruises the most was the four hr cruise, but this was my first cabin a three-day cruise. I had a good time, and I will do it again. I must be honest with you ladies I ate and drank unmercifully. I had lots of wine and Bahama Mamas, and on the island, I drank their Kalik beer and Bahama Mama. And I ate and ate, I am going on my own special diet I made up my mind. I am doing juices in the morning and fruit and vegetables for lunch and vegetable or salad with fish or chicken for dinner and some kind of snack for bedtime and lots of water. I got to detox myself no alcohol. But yes I had a great time.2
-
Its kind of interesting we are all in the process of trying slightly different things to see if they work for us individually now...
i'm kinda working on eating the biggest amount of my food before 3pm; having a lighter dinner and allowing for my snack (and a glass of wine perhaps lol) but depending on what shift i'm working, we'll see how that goes... i'm thinking the bigger meal for me at my usual 6-630 time isn't the best choice for me so i'll work on that.. my head still goes to a "dinner" size meal so it will be interesting to see.. and the water like milove. omg I am having a hard time pushing the water lately but will try harder with it too..
I do find that 7.2 sign on my cupboard is helping a lot... at least making me think twice before I make a food choice that is!
I cant imagine anyone going on a cruise and NOT indulging mlove LOL.. I have done the 2 and 4 hour ones as well, and love being on the water.. so i'm thinking I may give it a try next year if my friends still wanna go!

Well, my company left and I got on the scale this morning. I didn't even think it was possible to gain eight pounds in four days. I went hiking two of those days. I really didn't think I was eating THAT much. I had a couple margaritas one night and three gin & diet tonics one night. I did eat tacos, chips and queso, Chinese food and enchiladas but not so much that I was gorging myself. I'm really hoping that it's water weight and it will come off quickly. I'm totally disappointed in myself. Just when I get into a great eating and exercise routine something happens to derail me. I'm getting back on it today though. I'm not going to mope and have a pity party and gain another five pounds. But jeez!!!! Eight pounds?!?!!!!!! Ugh!!!0
-
suzy... tacos, chips and Chinese super high in sodium - betcha within 2 days of guzzling enough water to sink a camel you will lose at least 1/2 that weight - yup i beleive it so betcha $5 !! c'mon betcha!!!1
-
I really really hope so! I'm so disappointed in myself for not sticking with my plan. I think I've figured out a new trigger for me though. We were staying up until 2:00 am every night and I was tired. So now I know that I have to get adequate sleep in these situations as well as not drink alcohol. I've got to do better! I don't think I have anything coming up anytime soon so hopefully I can get on a routine and stay there for awhile.1
-
I'm sure some good sleep and the camel amount of water will do it..... and I better win that bet because I think if I don't,....i'm afraid my $5 Canadian is only worth about $3 U.S. to you LOL!! So get those zzz's and chug away and i'll be looking forward to a yay post from you in a few days!1
-
Wow, eight pounds in four days! I was shocked that I gained seven pounds in just over a week! I know how you feel - it's just unbelievable, isn't it? And like you, I wasn't overeating madly. It has to be water weight, most of it. Mine is coming off now, quite quickly, although I'm sure I'll struggle with the last couple of pounds. Yours should too. One thing I took from is that it shows that we HAVE been eating well the rest of the time, if there is such a dramatic weight gain when we relax and don't watch what we're eating! That's kind of encouraging (she says, desparately looking for a silver lining!).
Welcome back, Milove. I'm glad you had a good time. I've never been on a cruise, although I've caught a night boat over to the Netherlands (from the UK). (And been on lots of little day boats, because I used to visit the Scottish islands a lot!). I had to google Bahama Mama - doesn't sound like a diet drink - ha ha! It does sound like a lovely drink to have on a cruise, though!
Snoozie, I am shocked at the brownie! 450 calories! I have been known to make brownies and I admit to make some last week when my son was home, and I suppose they are mainly just concentrated butter and sugar. So they look small, but pack a lot of calories. No wonder they taste so good. I thought I had a brilliant way to deal with brownies, though. As soon as I bought them, I'd cut them up into very small portions and freeze them. So no temptation to go and snack on them. Anyway, my plan fell through when I found that they taste delicious straight out of the freezer! Don't ask why I even tried to eat one straight out of the freezer in the first place! I still have some in there, left over from my son's visit (he was supposed to take them with him), and they seem to be calling out to me in evenings!1 -
Vail I actually laughed out loud when I read about u discovering the down side of freezing brownies in that th are Eve better !! Oops more later boss lurking but I did laugh !!!!!1
-
Down two of the eight pounds this morning...so that's something. I'm determined to get the rest off really quickly!!
Haha! Frozen brownies sound delicious! I'm such a sweetaholic that a little ice would never stop me! I've discovered a low calorie ice cream that I am now addicted to. It's called Halo Top and comes in a lot of flavors. The calories vary but a whole (small) carton can be less than 300 calories. I eat a fourth to a half for dessert in the evening sometimes. The big downside is that it's so expensive but it's a nice treat occasionally.1 -
Suzy you are a woman after my own heart I think we are all in the same boat, don't feel bad we are here to support each other, I am so glad that I can verbalize. Vail you also made me laugh so outloud about the frozen brownies and the low calorie Bahama mama.
Well for two days I have been doing well with the food choices. No red meat, so far only fish, fruit, vegetables and cheese and nut. No alcohol very difficult but managing lol. I still have my coffee in the morning. Not buying the alcohol might offset the price. This is the first time in over a year that I wanted to put a pic up I might be coming out of my slump.2
