2017--This Year is Our Year!!!

School was closed throughout the state yesterday because of the snow, icy roads and extreme low temps. I did get motivated and cleaned out some drawers. Amazing what can be found shoved to the back and forgotten.
This is so good and is a neat way to promote pet adoption. The video is great:

A really warm 9 degrees this morning. I got on the scales and saw that I had lost 2 pounds without really trying this past week. If I had tried, the scale would not have budged.0
-
Jean - so the moral to the story is don't try? LOL!
My "pantry" wasn't in as bad a shape as I thought so I'm pretty well organized. Planning to weigh tomorrow morning and start in on Tuesday. See how well I can do THIS year!
I hated to spook Indy but I had to do laundry today. And she is definitely a little spooked.
18 degrees here this morning. Bitterly cold. The cats appreciated the feeding today for sure!
I wish I could talk the other person out of canned food. They are attracting turkey vultures. I sat and watched today and those birds had no interest in the dry food. They have to be coming only because some days there is canned food.0 -
Maryanne--I don't think the moral to the story is "Don't try." I think it is more like "See what can happen if not buying carryout and eating out when indulging in physical therapy."0

Jean, I think I worked at that place!
I ended up skipping Happy Hour last Friday due to the cold. I just couldn't get motivated to go out in it for a purely social occasion. We may try for a "do over" later this week. We are supposed to have much nicer weather all week, at least until Saturday.
DH is going to visit his sister and his mom this week but I am staying home this time. I just don't want to go this time. I'll enjoy some alone time, I think.
I went with a friend today to see the movie "Hidden Figures" and I would strongly recommend it. If you're not familiar with the story, it is a true story of three African-American women who worked at NASA during the '60's. Their job title was "computers" and it was their job to check the calculations made by the engineers and other specialists who were trying to put the Mercury program into space. This was also the time when the first computer was being installed and brought into use. My friend and I really enjoyed the movie, especially knowing that it was a true story.0 -
Pam - I'm glad you enjoyed that movie. I've ordered several books about those women. They have to be one of the best kept secrets of the space race!0
-
Pam--I've read great reviews on that movie. Yes, I think most of us have worked at places that reflect that mentality in some degree.
Maryanne--I agree about best kept secret. I never heard of them until reading about the movie.
We were at a lovely 4 degrees when awakened by a phone call at 5am. School is delayed because of the cold and time some students have to stand out waiting for the bus.0 -
I weighed myself this morning. No big surprises. Finishing up the last of the "bad food" today. Picked out food for tomorrow and set up my spreadsheet. Found a wire basket in the basement that I can put in the freezer side of the kitchen refrigerator to hold a day's frozen food when I'm doing frozen. I guess I'm as ready as I'll ever be.
One thing that really struck me in the run up to this is how completely different my food is when I'm "off" from when I'm "on". That probably explains a good chunk of why I eventually fall away. Have to ponder that as the year goes along.
I think another issue is that food is one thing that keeps me from being as bored. My life is work and CROM. Period. Something else to ponder but not news.
Finally there's the food addiction issue which I don't think I can discount.
Short term? I need to take off a few pounds before the client seminar in early May. Longer term - definitely have issues to ponder.0 -
I bought a copy of the Hamilton biography that inspired Lin-Manuel Miranda (since I'll never get to see the show LOL!) I don't think I ever read a 700 page book before. I'm only 30 pages in and it's fascinating. I can see what got Lin's attention! Not sure I'll make it all 700 pages. I've got tons of books to read in this house. We'll see.0
-
At age 14 (!!!) young Alexander Hamilton wrote I "would willingly risk my life, tho' not my character, to elevate my station."
Wow!0 -
Interesting facts about Hamilton. I'm at the library to pick up items I requested on my trip down. And I'm on their computer since the Comcast guy doesn't come until Wednesday. It was pleasant here weather wise so DH and I took our first walk on the bike path. I'm planning to ty for 4-5 days a week. We did a few blocks and that had to take a break because DH's knee was acting up. I knew there was a bench by the tennis court so we sat a few minutes and then completed the walk home. I felt pretty good that we'd actually done it.0
-
Jean - sadly I've had clients who could have written that employee handbook!
I fed the colonies this morning and then I continued to catch up on some of my own chores. Including putting Christmas away and filing CROM's sales tax return. I need to tackle my filing next and then I may feel a little better organized.0 -
Had an exciting day! I subbed in the 5th grade today. Multiple shootings took place in a neighboring county with the culprits reported headed our way. I spent about 5 hours in a lock down with these little angels. A lock down means that the blinds are closed, so no one can see in from the outside, the classroom door is locked and no student is permitted out of the room. Extra people in the office were used to escort students to the bathroom if they had to go.
For some reason, I wouldn't mind having some comfort food.0 -
Wow, Jean! I can understand the craving for comfort food after a day such as that! Did they catch the culprits?0
-
Jean - I can see why you might want some comfort food. Locked in a room with 5th graders? I can't even imagine.0
-
I did good yesterday. Had to sub for lunch since the energy to make a salad wasn't there and my salad dressing packets haven't arrived but I stayed with the calorie count. Also did 10 minutes on the treadmill (baby steps; gotta start small).

I must have worn DH out from our little walk yesterday. I asked several times if he wanted to walk today and he told me his whole body ached. He didn't even want to ride down to the library with me. He wants to check some things at Town Hall Building Dept but he said not today. It's right next to the library and I thought he coud do that while I checked email. One more day before the Comcast tech comes.
I have to go by the Post Office when I leave here but I'm planning to do a little walk without him when I get back to the house. it's a beautiful day here today so I have no good euse not to walk.
Jean..That must have been pretty scary. A couple of months ago, a police officer was shot in his cruiser here while doing paperwork. The shooter was someone the police knew of from previous encounters. Fortunately, the cop survived and the community rallied around him. This is pretty peaceful place so it just shows violence can happen anywhere.0 -
Today was a beautiful day here in Baltimore. Supposed to be even warmer tomorrow.0
-
It was 80 degrees here today, but extremely windy. I went out to do a little bit of shopping, but it entailed three different stores. I thought I was going to be blown into the next county a couple of times. When I saw the news they said we had wind gusts up to 45mph.
DH left this morning to visit his sister and mom. I could have gone but just really was craving a little bit of alone time so I chose to stay home. He will be back on Saturday and I think I'll be ready to see him by then.0 -
Good evening, everyone! I am tired. Today wrapped up a 3 day assignment with the 5th-grade but I work the next two days also. I'm tired. Could it be that in a ten day pay period I worked 8 days?
The culprit responsible for the shootings resulting in two deaths and several school lockdowns was apprehended.
We have gone from single digit temps over the weekend and Monday to the mid-50s today. It makes dressing for the weather a challenge.
Vitalicious had free shipping on its VitaTops which I received today.0 -
Wow, Jean, that was a serious shooting!
Pam - the occasional alone time can be good. I sort of miss DH travelling for work. LOL!
Gorgeous day here today as well. We even have a window open in the living room. Cats are loving it.
I had an appointment with the retina specialist this morning. Several years ago she repaired a tear in the retina in my right eye, on an emergency basis, on a Friday evening. She has rechecked me since but only the right eye. It didn't register today when the tech dilated both my eyes. The doctor found a hole in the left eye and asked to see my results from last year. Oops! She's never ever looked at my left eye. And they weren't scheduled to do it today. Total fluke. Methinks visions of malpractice were suddenly dancing in her head. She suddenly had time to get the laser out and do a repair on the spot and she wants to see me again in 1-2 weeks. Boy, I hate that laser. But I do need to be able to see.
Today is day three of sticking to "my" plan. For breakfast had the NS sausage mcmuffin. I'm not a fan - even after adding a slice of FF cheese - and won't be ordering any more. The D'Lites' egg mcmuffins are good and only a few more calories (but they do have more sodium for those that care). For lunch a big salad with turkey (my dressing packets came). Dinner was NS chicken alfredo on leftover broccoli. Okay but no better than diet frozen from the grocery store. I have two snacks laid out for tonight. I get to play with Indy first.

Wow, Marianne! Some say there are no coincidences, so it seems somebody was watching out for you today. Were you noticing any symptoms? When I had my retina tear, I know exactly WHEN it happened, but didn't know at the time WHAT was happening. Three days later the tear became a retina detachment, requiring a much more serious surgery. It was like a thick cord was dangling down one side of my field of vision, but then it went away so I didn't think much about it, until three days later when I realized that I had lost my peripheral vision in that same eye.
It sounds like your plan is working pretty well for you. I think for those of us who live near decent grocery stores, it isn't too hard to find good diet foods. Or at least foods that are as good as What NS offers in their shelf stable line. I never tried any of their frozen foods so I can't comment on them.
Today I pulled out my Walk It Out for the Wii disc and dusted it off. I was able to walk for about 45 minutes before the batteries gave out and truthfully, I was grateful that they did, lol! I did pretty well using that when I was on NS to get in cardio, so I'm going to try it again. I really would like to lose 20 pounds before my niece's wedding in early May, and it won't happen unless I start doing some serious cardio and start eating better.0 -
Pam - I had symptoms two years ago when I had the retinal tear. None this time from the hole. She now says I'm prone this type of thing. Oh, joy... Apparently I'm also in the early stages of cataracts. I was pleased yesterday that when I opened my mouth and expressed my anxiety and squeamishness about anything connected to my eyes (which is hard for me to do), the doctor really walked me through every step. Exactly what I needed. I like this lady (in spite of the glaring error of never looking at my left eye.)
I also want to lose about 20 pounds before our client seminar in early May. I'd like to be even lighter but since I'm just now starting I guess I have to be realistic!
Amazing how easily I slide back into the routine. Also amazing how easily I slide out of it. I've got a lot of things to ponder I think if I'm ever going to break this cycle.

The ophthalmologist said it was okay for me to keep my optometrist appointment yesterday. So I went and got new glasses ordered and he went online and put in the vision info to renew my drivers' license. Of course that web site is down today so I couldn't finish off the renewal while I was thinking about.
My glasses live in the car so I don't really care what they look like. That threw all three male employees in this store for a loop. I think they are used to women trying on all kinds of glasses. I mostly cared what the lens looked like and what shape they are. After that, except for ruling out something outlandish, I don't much care.0 -
Maryanne--Hope the new glasses turn out well. I hate getting new frames. I'm one of those who try on, try on, try on.
I worked every day this week and had an appointment scheduled in the city. We had icy conditions on the road so I opted not to go. The hair appointment has been rescheduled to the 25th as that was the first open date my person had. Monday, I have to go see the urologist for the bladder cancer follow-up. I'm sure he will schedule another scope.
I did lose one pound this week, so there is some progress.0 -
Jean - good job on the loss!
The weather was predicted to be horrible here but it sort of fizzled. Of course DH was sure it would eventually hit and didn't want to uncover the cars so I stayed home. I'll have to make it out today to feed the colonies.
I'm sticking to my plan pretty well. So far!0 -
Maryanne--Good job on sticking to the plan.
It looks like another yucky day. I have to get up early tomorrow so I can get to the city for a 9am doctor's appointment. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate.0 -
Weird day here. The sun is shining and it's not that cold but everything is covered in ice which is now rapidly melting so it's almost like a rainy day. I had to follow my rainy day procedures at the colonies even though the sun is shining!
January and February are my two months to get things done. Just the way the schedule works out. I tackled the pantries. Now I'm digging in the filing. Digging is a good word for it.
Unfortunately this week I have three doctor visits - endocrinologist (who is usually not that late), dentist (usually not that late), and ophthalmologist (who is always behind). My dad said once that at a certain age all you do is go to the doctor and wait and go to the doctor and wait and... I think I'm getting to that point.
