Maryanne--I'm hoping since my appointment is at 9am that I won't have to wait long. I usually don't wait long at this specialist or at the cardiologist, but I have had some doctor visits that were torture in waiting. Nothing like having a Kindle with you just in case. Good job on tackling the pantries.
Food has been good today. Quaker Weight Control oatmeal for breakfast, low fat greek yogurt for mid-morning snack, NS white bean chili for lunch with steamed veggies, a serving of almonds for afternoon snack, NS lasagna and steamed veggies for dinner.0 -
Jean - I can't handle the white bean chili. You must have a tough stomach. LOL!
I spent so long at the retina doc one time that people were leaving (including someone who'd driven from West Virginia to north of Baltimore - them leaving seemed like the height of silliness to me) and the staff was bringing out sodas.
People keep telling me "just walk out and find a new doctor" but almost every doctor I've tried is the same. They just cram too many appointments into a day. The glaucoma doc, I discovered by accident one day, schedules someone every 10 minutes. My endocrinologist is an exception. She's super organized and runs the place like a drill sergeant. One time she went outside and dragged the ultrasound tech in from a smoke break to keep everything moving along.
Yes, the kindle really comes in handy!
My big first week, here's your biggest loss of the year? 4 pounds. Not bad but now it gets hard. Have my food chosen and spreadsheets done for today and tomorrow.
Just renewed my driver's license online for 7 years. Super easy! Some things work.

Maryanne--Great news on the weight loss. I agree that it is silly to drive long distances and then get disgusted at the waiting time and walk out. Reminds me of a traffic stop because of road work on a two lane road. We probably sat there five minutes when the person behind me got tired and worked his car around to return the other direction. What happened? One minute after he left, the traffic was waved through.
I'm tired. I went to the appointment and as expected I get to have another bladder scope and look at the kidneys on Feb. 15. This is getting old but I understand it being needed. I then had my nails done, had lunch and went grocery shopping. I couldn't believe how crowded the city was yesterday. I guess people were taking advantage of the holiday.
As I said, I am tired and could easily sit here but I go to work at 11:30. I had Southwestern Egg Beaters for breakfast.0 -
I can get in and read your posts at the house but can't respond. I'm having a problem with pop ads blocking the post button. I'm responding on a library computer. So if I don't post, don't think I've vanished. I'm usually at the library every few days and that's when you
ll hear from me. We finally got phone and WIFI back at the house. This site is the only one I have a problem with.
I called the local chiropractor yesteryear and he saw me the same day. I'd been having low back pain from the ride. I saw him a couple of years ago and liked him but I didn't go to him last year. He sends a birthday postcard for a free session on this hydro massage bed but I'm never there in October. I mentioned it to the receptionist and she said they are very informal there and I could have the free session then. You can control the speed and intensity of the massage and pause it on any sore spots. Meanwhile I listened to New Age music through headphones. They charge $1 per minute and people usually do 15 minutes. I bought a punch card of 5 sessions for $40 which I can use whenever I want. When I'm home, I go for a massage every other week and I find it minimizes any aches and pains I have. This helped take care of the lower back and between the should blades where I have the most problems. After that, I saw the chiropractor and he worked on my back, hip and shoulders. I felt pretty good when I left. I'll see him again on Thursday for a follow up. That's what the usual treatment is at home. I go a couple of times a week at first, then weekly and finally monthly.
I told him how my hip goes out since the auto accident 12 years ago and that one leg is longer than the other during flare ups. The goal is to get the hip in place and the multiple sessions usually get it to stabilize. He said there was about a 3/4 inch difference before treatment. That explains why sometimes walking for exercise is hard. The hip throws my gait off but treatment gets it back to normal. He said some people are born with the problem but mine is related to injury. That's the better condition to have because it's fixable with treatment.
I wanted DH to go as well because his knee and hip were bothering him. of course he told me he was fine when I made the appointment. Later that day, the knee twinged when he climbed stairs. I'm sure I'll get them there in time, especially if the knee continues to hurt. He goes at home but he's not someone to see a new doctor unless he's in pain. I'll let him use one of my massage punches. that should get him in the office.
Well, this has been really long. next time I won't have to go through the explanation of why I'm not posting regularly.
Jean..You got a lot done on your trip to the city. Maryanne..Good job on the pantry and sticking to your food plan. I re-joined the rec center and will work in somer classes in the next few days.
Pam..Did you hear any comments on the birthday cake you made. The woman must have been thrilled to get such a work of beauty.0 -
Helene, you might try clearing your browsing history on your computer at home, as well as deleting cookies. Sometimes that will help get rid of the pop up ads. It's worth a try, at least.
No, I did not get any feedback on the cake from the member who received it. There's really no mechanism for her to do so, but I did get many compliments from the office staff when I dropped it off.
I'm having a lot of back pain right now. I've been doing my Wii Walk It Out program and some core strengthening exercises. I suspect it is the latter that is causing the back pain, in combination with doing laundry yesterday. My machines are rather low to the ground and they are front loaders, so that requires me to bend and twist when loading and transferring the laundry. I've noticed before that I often have back pain after doing several loads of laundry. I've asked DH to build me a platform to raise the machines so I won't have to bend over so far, but it hasn't made it to the top of his To Do list yet. I think it may have jumped up several places now, however, since today he's having to do the sheets and towels.0 -
Helene--It sounds as if you have a good plant to help you with your low back pain and hip issues. Hopefully DH will be seeing the chiropractor also. The massages sound great!0

Started the day with Southwestern eggbeaters. Not working today.
This was included in "Weight Loss Minute" email:
1. Never give up
Research shows that when people try to quit smoking, on average, it takes quitting ten times before they become a non-smoker. Since that's the average, it means that some people are successful after one try, while for others, it may take 19 tries.
But here's the secret. Smokers never know which attempt is the magic one that makes them successful at quitting.
In the same way, you don't know which of your weight-loss attempts will be the one that sticks. I'm confident that you have a magic number as well.
So even if you've lost weight many times in the past, your successful attempt might be right around the corner. In fact, it very well might be the one you are doing now.
2. Go back to what works
Think back to times when you've been the most successful with weight loss. If you had a plan or system that worked before, it will most likely work again.
If you begin to struggle, don't run to Amazon.com or start researching online to find a new diet plan. The best program for you is usually already on your shelf.
So instead of giving up on an approach that works, renew your motivation and commitment to it, and push yourself back into action.
3. Focus on today
In the book, 100 Days of Weight Loss, the lesson for Day 1 says, "Your past does not affect your future."
When you get discouraged and assume your intentions will fail, remind yourself of this great promise.
Then instead of letting past failure pull you down, use the next step of that lesson to remind you that today is the one that counts most.

Jean - so maybe this attempt will be my charm!!! I think I have to figure out some way to occasionally have the foods I miss without letting it totally drown me for months after. That's the piece that always seems to escape me.
Helene - I'm glad you've got something fixable and that they're working on it.
Pam - sort of a PITA when doing the right thing (i.e. exercising) causes pain!
I'm going to have egg/egg beaters for breakfast, do the grocery shopping and then get to work!0 -
Maryanne--I am not a believer in total deprivation long term of something I like. I find that results in binge eating when the tasty item is eaten. I will, when serious, at times have a dessert out but not in the house. Perhaps once a week, I will have something from the drive thru or at home that might be considered off plan. I just hope the other days compensate.
I discover all kinds of trivia. I was getting ready to throw away some promotional material to subscribe to Prevention magazine. In it was this tidbit: "Smell yourself 30 pounds lighter. People who smelled green apple, banana, or peppermint several times daily lost an average of 30 pounds in 6 months. Researchers think those scents may curb cravings."
If it were this easy, but I may be on the hunt for these scents.0 -
of his list either. Maryanne..I think your go to is the spreadsheets. You seem to do well with that. I agree with the occasional treat strategy Jean mentioned. Total deprivation can drive you crazy and lead to a binge. I like hr thoughts on doing it outside the home.Jean..Your post had a lot of god advice to ponder. I like going back to something that worked. Pam..Call DH to put the laundry in the machine and take it out every time. I'll bet those platforms get done lickety split. I have the same problem with my w/d and we discussed platforms. Ready made are expensive and DH can build them. Not at the top of his list either. Maryanne..I think your go to is the spreadsheets. You seem to do well with that. I agree with the occasional treat strategy Jean mentioned. Total deprivation can drive you crazy and lead to a binge. I like hr thoughts on doing it outside the home.0

Our washer and dryer are on platforms because of water issues. Where we lived before was in a flood zone so we were used to thinking about water in the basement. They are just simple wooden platforms DH built.0
-
I see only half my post took. I was telling Pam I have the same problem with the W/D bring too low and DH made the same promises. I guess they're not top priority for him either. Ready made ones are way too expensive.0
-
I've seen washer and dryers with a pedestal accessory; those things are expensive.
I got an activity tracker, not for counting steps, but for instant readout on heart rate as well as sleep analysis. It had great reviews on Amazon and is half the price of a Fitbit Charge 2. I really like it. It communicates with the App on my android tablet and give me info such as "you were active for 31 minutes and burned 16 cal." We all know that is just an estimate, but it is great for the purpose for which I purchased and at half the price, it is acceptable and is motivating0 -
I can't afford one of those pedestals they sell as an accessory to a washer or a dryer.
I got a highly rated activity tracker from Amazon at half the cost of a Fitbit Charge 2. I got it more for easy reading of heart rate and sleep more than steps although I can see how that can be motivating. I really like it and have worn it 24 hours. The App gives great info as the tracker communicates with it via bluetooth. It is a nice size and isn't overwhelming in size like some of them and it is easily read on the wrist.
I just checked my heart rate and compared it to the rate given on my blood pressure cuff. There was one point difference. Apparently, it confirmed I slept well last night and gave the amount of deep sleep as well as light sleep, and minutes awake (Midnight got me up so I went to the bathroom before returning to bed). It was very close to the time I know I was up after the mouser awakened me.
I can tell you that it confirms that exercise can help but don't expect to burn a lot of calories through walking. I burned 15 cal in 1264 steps. It gets this info from what you enter about height, weight and age when you set it up. All estimates, of course.0 -

When Midnight wakes you up, what is he looking for? Food, Play or just because he can? I'm back to the chiropractor in a few minutes.0

Helene--Attention, as he has food left out.0

Between Tuffy, Jack and Smokie my bed is pretty busy. Jack's favorite time of day is the half hour after I go to bed. Then I pull the covers up over my head to signal sleep time. At that point Tuffy settles in next to me but if I make the least move he's in my face. I sort of miss tossing and turning. If I actually get up Smokie's right there with the other two. I guess I should be glad they don't ALL sleep with me.
This morning I fed the colonies, then went to pick up Indy meds and then went to my dentist's new location. I probably should get a new dentist. One that participates with Blue Cross and is closer to my house. I'm really not getting what I should from my dental premiums. But I'm a dental phobic and I'm used to this place and they to me. I see the same therapist every time so there's no conflicting instructions that used to drive me crazy.
Now I need to work!0 -
My plans for the day went awry. I spent from 11:15 to 2:00 at the eye doctor for the 5-minute recheck of my retina. Unfortunately they just this week got a TV for the waiting room (WHY????????) and one of the young girls at the front desk defied her supervisor and turned on the inauguration - with sound. In addition, several elderly Caucasian men turned it on on their smart phones and proceeded to spew pro Trump commentary; in spite of huge "no cell phone usage" signs. All this of course created heated talk in the waiting room. I spent much of the time standing up in a corner where I couldn't see - and could barely hear - any of it and tried to read my book. By the time I got out of there I bet if you'd taken my blood pressure you'd have put me on meds. Geesh!
I kept repeating my late mother's mantra "if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all."
The good news is that her repair from last week is doing great!
And maybe all that standing burned a few extra calories?0 -
Maryanne--I think I would have rescheduled myself for a different day. I enjoyed working yesterday as there was nothing about the inauguration. I watched the news recap on the evening news but that was sufficient. Great news on the repair doing well.
I see NS has a special of free shipping on orders of $100 or more, including frozen food.0 -
Today's weigh in revealed a two-pound loss. I see there is a movie out called "Split" which deals with a man with over 20 multiple personalities who abducts 3 girls. I might like to take this in as Rotten Tomatoes has given it decent reviews. I thought about today but I'll be in the city on Wednesday to get my hair done so that might be better.0
-
We're re having a quiet day today. After church, we stopped at the farmer's market to stock up on fruit and tomatoes for the week. My plans are reading and watching the Patriot's football game tonight.0
-
I went to the city with a friend and ate at the Outback, where I had the Tilapia with crabmeat. So, so good. Afterwards, she went shopping for groceries in WalMart. The big spender here picked up a package of coffee filters I had forgotten on the last visit.
I work tomorrow and Tuesday. Wednesday, I have a hair appointment in the city. I have to do something about the color as it has grown out.0 -
Tilapia wiht crab sounds good!
It's a miserable, windy, cold, rainy day here. Perfect for packet day which includes high protein pancakes, hot chocolate, chicken noodle soup, etc.
I always have a little trouble nuking the dinner packet so I made it this afternoon so I could concentrate (sad, yes...LOL!) It's spicy cheese and pasta. Such a tiny little portion. 130 calories. I'll sprinkle RF Parmesan and have a huge plate of broccoli. Most of the packets are low calorie and fairly low volume but overall with all the protein it's a day not to be hungry but also not to have too many calories.
Lost 3 pounds last week.0 -
Maryanne--Ditto on the weather conditions here. Congrats upon the weight loss; you are back with a vengeance!
I am hungry as I didn't have an opportunity to have my protein snack in the afternoon.0 -
Maryanne..Great job on your loss. You do so well on the weeks you add in the packet days. We had the stormy weather Sunday night. it was a real tropical downpour with heavy wind gusts. It cleared yesterday but was still pretty breezy. I used the day to do errands. I had to mail back my audio books that we listened to on the drive down. I went over to the mainland for a mani/pedi. It had been 7 weeks because of travel. My nails were so long, it was hard to type or use my phone. But I had not a single chip. I didn't know if the place I went to last spring did the dipping polish for the mani. if not, I would have done gel and gone more frequently. They are doing the dip so I was all set. It's a bit more expensive than gel but the longevity makes it cheaper in the long run. So I now have sparky fushia nails. The manicurist was trying to get a color close to the toe color and asked if I minded sparkles. I actually love sparkles so it was a win/win.
DH is next door at town hall looking at plans for how our house was built. I had him drop me at the library so I could post on their computer. We hope to find out where the bearing walls are from the plans. We want to take a short wall out in the kitchen if it's not load bearing. It would make a much more open concept when we remodel it.0 -
Helene - sparkles sound like fun! But with the colonies and the heavy labor with CROM I have no nails. I clip them very short and ignore them.
As if the Pet Expo wasn't enough, my dad called. His brother died. Not unexpectedly but the funeral is Saturday. Luckily I wasn't planning on being at the Pet Expo Saturday so I can go.
We are a little up in the air right now as Bonnie's van had an issue yesterday and is at the garage. They promised her by noon today we'll see.
The tentative schedule for me is today, load me and Bonnie; tomorrow, set up; Sunday cover the show and pack; and Monday pick everything up and return to the storage unit. I've got subs covering the colonies so I can take the colony feeding stuff out of my van and load with inventory. I have my paws crossed for the weather forecast to remain clear.
Between the trip to PA and the pet expo, eating will be catch as catch can some days. I have a bunch of lunch packet type things ready to take so at least I won't be eating fairgrounds food.0 -
I typed out a lengthy post this morning that suddenly vanished, and I'm just now following finding time to come back. It's so annoying when that happens!
Jean and Maryanne, congrats on your losses! I hope the trend continues for both of you.
Helene, about ten days ago I also did a dipping powder manicure and I really like it. I've gone to the same manicurist now for more than twenty years and she does a type of gel manicure that I've been happy with, but now that I've tried the dipping powder I'd like to keep doing it. However, I don't think she will be willing to do those as she is a solo practitioner and I imagine it would be very expensive for her to purchase all of the different powders, or enough of them to offer enough variety for her clients. She's had some sort of family crisis and has been out of town for several weeks now, which is why I went to someone else this time. She was so kind to me last year when I was injured. She came to my house several times to do my manicures and would not allow me to pay her for her travel time and trouble in coming to me. I would feel very bad about leaving her at this point, but I really like the dipping powder. After ten days, my manicure still looks perfect, despite my doing a lot of cooking over the past few days. That's usually pretty hard on my manicures.
It seems like I've been in my kitchen non-stop lately. DH needed something to take to a breakfast function at church on Sunday, and something else for his home Bible study group Sunday night. Yesterday we took dinner to a neighbor who recently had foot surgery, and today I took lunch to a friend who just had her second knee replacement. Tomorrow I need to start on a birthday cake for a friend's party on Friday, so I'm not done yet. For the two meals we delivered I was able to double up on the salad I made and use that for both, and I made apple tarts on Monday that I took to each of them for dessert, so that helped. And for today's delivery, I used the frozen lasagna that I had made at Christmas for us. My recipe makes such a large quantity that I was able to make 2 8" square pans instead of the usual 9x13" pan, so I had that all made up and ready to bake this morning. I bought some garlic bread at the store and warmed it, so today's meal came together pretty quickly. Yesterday I made a shrimp and corn chowder soup for my neighbors. She had indicated that neither she nor her husband like casseroles, so it's a little harder to come up with a menu for them. This is the neighbor whose husband was in the bizarre accident in Spain last year and suffered a brain injury. He's doing well now but may never be able to return to work as a pilot. For now, he's at home, which is handy since she needs a lot of help right now.
That's about all I can remember of this morning's post. Hopefully this one won't vanish into the ether, or result in a double post.0 -
Pam - you have been cooking non stop. How can someone say they don't like casseroles? That's such a generic term that covers a wide swath of foods. Plus it's not like saying I'm allergic to peanuts (which you'd have to know).
My sister is flying in for the funeral but it's a very rapid round trip so I won't get to see that much of her. Darn it anyway! Of course being pet expo weekend it would have been difficult in any case.
I'm afraid that taking a round trip to PA in the middle of pet expo weekend is going to take a lot out of me. But it must be done.
I'm actually looking forward to February. No doctor visits and only two vet visits. No CROM events. I have to count out one mailing for volunteers to pick up to assemble but that's no biggie.
Should give me a chance to get caught up on some stuff like filing and also settle even better into a diet and exercise routine. Let it snow - I won't care!
