Tomorrow I get fitted for the iWalk 2.0, a hands free crutch. It's not a perfect solution for getting around with a foot cast but it looks closer to perfect than crutches or a knee scooter.

Hopefully it's comfortable enough that I can go for walks. Being hands free is HUGE!

Wow! That looks awesome. Good luck!

Today is the first day I have gotten out of bed in almost exactly a month that I didn't feel a myriad of aches and pains. My left hip (with the torn labrum and and FAI) wasn't irritated at all AND the excruciating tightness in the right side of my back was nowhere to be found. I've had to follow PT to the letter to feel better and sitting all day for work definitely aggravates it (working on a solution to do more standing now).

I finally feel hopeful that I will return to running!

Whoo hoo! Thats great! Hows today? Still feeling better?

I'm definitely his favorite human, no treats needed! My older son comes close to being favorite but he's away at college,so I get even more attention from the pup

Ok I have decided nearly a month of no running means I need to be in this exclusive group now too.
@7lenny7 when I had my hand surgery Hobbes wanted to be my pillow for my cast and followed me around even more than he normally would. I am pretty sure he decided I needed a service dog and he self appointed himself!
How do you like the iWalk? It does look like a pretty cool invention. Assuming it attaches to your upper leg so you can move it around?
My foot is still too sore to run on and all the walking hasn't helped. Today I wore walking shoes, not cushioned running shoes that I use for walking, and my foot was screaming. Don't get to see the doctor for another almost 2 weeks (12 days)...even if we had been home this week and next, the appointment I got was their 1st available. What do you do if you are in excruciating pain or something? Healthcare here just sucks and I have really good PPO insurance, just can't get an appointment anywhere. What's up with that?

Don’t ask me how to get doctor appointments. When I was hurt I got the wrong ones, and continued to struggle for ever and ever, and still have t found my wagon I fell off.

Then we have the town I’m in now... when I was sick last month, called the local clinic “yeah we can’t see you until x date unless you are an established patient” “uh yeah, by then I will be better, dead, or somewhere in between with a burst ear drum” *drives 45 minutes one way to next town with urgent care*.
This week, sis in law tells me I need a flu shot before seeing her kiddos at thanksgiving. I call clinic “yeah, do you guys do flu shots?” “Yes, but only for established patients.”

Ummmm .... I’m still over here scratching my head trying to figure out how to become an established patient. You have to be an established patient in order to be seen when you are sick. You also have to be an established patient to be seen when you are healthy, to receive preventative care..... I realize I’m not big on doctors... but is there another reason a person would go see a doctor, that I’m not aware of?

@shanaber I haven't used it too much because My cast seems to have somewhat of a rolled edge on top so when I kneel on the iWalk, it hurts. I've shoved a pad between the cast and my shin and that helps quite a bit, but I've decided to delay using it until after my checkup this afternoon. I think they'll take off this cast, remove the sutures, and recast. I'll ask that they use a shorter cast and take care to have a smooth edge on the new one.

I have used it twice. The first time to go downtown to US Bank Stadium, home of the MN Vikings, to see my son's soccer team play (they made the state quarterfinals, but lost ). It worked really well for that. I LOVE having my hands free, and being able to easily go up and down steps (compared to crutches). It's slow, but I don't have to hop up or down the stairs.

I used it two days later at home and the freedom of being hands free was great. I even did the dishes, picked up and vacuumed the main level of the house.

The one negative about it is that it's not really comfortable to sit with it on, or practical since the peg leg sticks out and up, so I take it off and put it back on when I want to stand. Not a huge deal.

One thing I found interesting at the stadium. I seem to get better treatment than if I had crutches. After I walked through security, I had stadium staff approach me immediately to see if I wanted a wheel chair and offered to push me wherever I was going. A lady in crutches came in immediately after me and they didn't ask her anything. We both walked to the parents section for our school. On the way to our seats I was asked 2 or 3 times if I needed any assistance. I did take advantage of the plush seats in the top row of the lower level, with the greater leg room.

It going to be interesting wearing this is public. I got a lot of stares. Only a few were brave enough to ask me about it. I think it makes me look more injured than I really am. It's simply a crutch alternative, but it has the look of a prosthetic leg, even though my actual leg bends behind me.

    @shanaber & @hanlonsk I think I got pretty lucky with my appointments.
    • Called for an appointment on Monday
    • Appointment with a Nurse Practitioner and X-ray on Tuesday
    • MRI and a consultation with the surgeon and his resident on Wednesday
    • Surgery Thursday.

From my Tuesday appointment to discharge after surgery was 54 hours. And all this took place a mile from work so it was very convenient.

And this week I received a "get well" card signed by nearly everyone I had contact with there, including the surgeon.

I've found a video on Youtube which shows a pretty good core workout routine for folks with a bum foot. I was going to start that last night but fell asleep instead. Who knew doing nothing could be so tiring. I've been starting to do dumbbell work too. If I can't run, the least I could do is to build up my upper body and core.

The gal who did that video has an entire series of "hurt foot" workout videos

Wow - I need to check out those videos... I have just been doing normal upper body, core work and the indoor cycling for cardio.

In all honesty I did get into see my doctor within a couple of days and had an x-ray taken. It is just all the specialists who have long waits for appointments. Even with her referral I couldn't get in to see the doctor she wanted until mid-December. The doctor they have me seeing in November is a contracted doctor which makes it difficult because she doesn't have access to any of my records or things like the x-rays.

I had my one week check up today. They took off my cast, cleaned the foot and put another cast on it.

The great news is that I found out that I only have 2 more weeks with a cast, not 3 like I thought. Then I get put in a CAM boot for 3 weeks. The first week of the boot is non weight bearing. So 1 less week in the cast and 2 less weeks of using crutches. Hell yes!

The bad news is that I think the cast maker did a horseshit job making this cast. The heel is flexible and the inner wrap isn't completely covered by the outer wrap. The toe area looks like a hack job. I'll put up with it this weekend and see how I feel about it Monday. He's the first person at this place I've been less than impressed with.

Overall though the good news far outweighs the bad.

Screw it, I'm calling and having them redo this cast tomorrow. I'm not putting up with this for 2 weeks.

Well I was hoping to join the main running thread this month, but I've managed to injure myself yet again :( I've only been back to running for 8 weeks since my last stress fracture (R 3rd metatarsal), and now I'm worried that I may have developed another stress fracture (L 5th metatarsal). I started having pain about 8 miles in to my long run on sunday, but it wasn't too bad and I finished out the run anyways (had to get back home!). It was achy on monday, but felt a tiny bit better on tuesday so I did my workout run as planned. Felt worse on Wednesday, but at that point I suspected it was something soft tissue so I ran anyways (5 easy). That was a bad idea. My whole foot was achy for the rest of wednesday and all of thursday. That is initially what made me suspect a SFX, since that is exactly what happened with my right foot- first, pain in the injury area followed by general achy-ness and pain over the whole foot. It only bothers me a tiny bit when I walk, and at least there is no visible swelling or bruising that I can see. The pain seems to be localized to the proximal end of my 5th metatarsal, which google informs me has low blood supply and therefore heals extra slowly. The pain hasn't been terrible, but the quality of it (initially felt like a strong pressure in the location when I ran, and then in a later run it was a sharp, cold pain, and now the random throbbing pain) makes me suspect it is something with the bone. Once you've had three stress fractures, you learn to recognize the pain :(

I'm planning to call the Dr first thing on Monday to make an appointment. I just hope that I'm wrong with my self-diagnosis! Or maybe that I caught it early enough that it's in the "stress reaction" category instead of "stress fracture". I'm just so bummed! The Space Coast Half Marathon is in three weeks, and to me it is the most important race that I do each year. My mom and I have completed it the last 6 years in a row, and it was the race that got me started running in the first place! Additionally, this year is the first year of a four year series, so if I miss out, I won't be able to get the extra special medal for completing all four years. There is a 7 hour course limit though so hopefully I'll at least be able to walk it. Man I am so mad at my body for always breaking on me like this :'(

Aw @ariceroni I'm sorry to hear that. I hope your wrong, but I suppose the alternative is tendonitis. And i think a SFX heals faster than those dang tendons.

    Keep us updated.

I just realized I'm still injured. Its become such a normal state that i no longer readily identify it as "abnormal".

My left ITB is getting crankier by the run. That's the side that had nerve impingment surgery and 3 branches of nerves cut at the piriformis level. With the dxa scan showing muscle loss on that side, i cant help but to fear that this is it. Without the strength, I'll never be able to overcome this itb/glute dynamic and will forever battle injuy or be forced to give up running all together. Of course, it could get better when its done getting worse.

@7lenny7 - I hope they can get that cast fixed up! Maybe the guy just wanted to get out of there to get an early start on his weekend 😁

@ariceroni - That is terrible! I am so sorry you are hurt again! Have you asked the doctor if there is a reason for the repeated stress fractures? Maybe there is something you can change to make them not be as likely?

@Elise4270 - I know you do PT exercises, can you do any strength work for your legs to help build up the muscle on the weaker side? Also I know it sounds weird but the nutritionist wanted me to eat something right after I run, with more protein because one of my legs (right) had some muscle loss. The last scan showed an improvement that she was happy with.

@shanaber Great advice! I lost my pt papers and have been doing what i can remember. I've been focusing the last few weeks on quad, glute strength on that side- i can actually see a difference in the quad.

I also take supplements for the nerves. Help health and regrowth.

I feel like then I'm in the stance phase, I'm shifting my body weight over that leg too far. I have a book to dig through, and bet i can email my PT. Or i may see if i can get in to see the doc earlier than end of January. But i was going to wait until then on another dxa scan to see if the loss is true, better, or worse.

I think I'll do some flipper swimming this week and continue with lazy squats (because my form is poor and i need to modify it so i dont hurt myself). And up my protein a bit. And put my bike on the trainer since the days are short and the trails are still so muddy.

I never did get my cast redone yesterday. I slept in late and spent the day getting stuff done before going out for the night. I getting used to it and it's only for another 12 days. Now I'm concerned it's too loose so I'll call tomorrow and see if they think I need to come in.

I'm loving my peg leg. I was able to easily work on my truck and replace the tailgate latch handle and clean it out a bit.

So after overdoing it on Saturday I'm still a bit achy along the tendon in my ankle. I've also got DOMS everywhere else because it was stair repeats day with the local trail running group and I had no idea.

Anyway, ankle is feeling a lot better than Saturday so I'm confident I can do a baby run Tuesday. I'm still scheduled for 1-4km for my short runs.

The views I got Saturday were worth the pain though.

Still hanging out here. Not running. Although, I snuck about .33 miles with the pupper doing our park loop. I am hoping maybe to try some short runs by the end of the month. We'll see what PT says about that. I've gone to every PT appt and been *mostly* compliant with doing my exercises. The weird thing in working on the hip impingement and labral tear on the left has really thrown my back out of whack on the right. I sit mostly at work, which causes me a lot of pain. Unless I spend my own $$ on equipment to allow me to sit/stand throughout the day, I can choose sit or I can choose stand. Definitely leaning toward stand as I can duck into an office or another cube if I need some sit times.

I'm cautiously optimistic that I can avoid surgery. I'm feeding that optimism by planning a 2019 race schedule that includes a 10miler in Feb. :D That is pretty ambitious, but a girl has to dream.

@sarahthes That is an outstanding view!

@7lenny7 I've seen a few folks with the peg legs before. Seems so much better than crutches.

@Elise4270 You also have FAI/labral tear, yes?
