@fitoverfortymom On the MRI, I do have a labral tear on the right. I suspect its from femoral anteversion. We'll see what the doc says in January. Currently its the left ITB thats keeping me from much running.0

I am still hanging around here too... I tried a run/walk today and I could feel the discomfort in my foot. When it hurt I stopped or walked, which isn't any improvement. It actually hurts worse when I walk. I really noticed it afterwards when I tried to put on my Oofos sandals and when I got a pedicure today. When the girl moved my toes around it really hurt.0
-
Oh my, @sarahthes that is beautiful!!
I called my surgeon's nurse and she wants me to come in to get recast tomorrow. She made it sound like I shouldn't be able to move my ankle much at all. I think the two toes involved have swollen a bit too, though there's no pain.
I really hope I get soneone different to do it. The guy who made this cast is the only person the place whom I felt was subpar.
I've been getting blue casts. Maybe it's time to switch to black.
I decided that I've been too active today... Working, laundry, dishes, and cooking dinner. For the rest of the night I'm going to keep my foot elevated and watch 'Dark' on Netflix.

Don’t ask me how to get doctor appointments. When I was hurt I got the wrong ones, and continued to struggle for ever and ever, and still have t found my wagon I fell off.
Then we have the town I’m in now... when I was sick last month, called the local clinic “yeah we can’t see you until x date unless you are an established patient” “uh yeah, by then I will be better, dead, or somewhere in between with a burst ear drum” *drives 45 minutes one way to next town with urgent care*.
This week, sis in law tells me I need a flu shot before seeing her kiddos at thanksgiving. I call clinic “yeah, do you guys do flu shots?” “Yes, but only for established patients.”
Ummmm .... I’m still over here scratching my head trying to figure out how to become an established patient. You have to be an established patient in order to be seen when you are sick. You also have to be an established patient to be seen when you are healthy, to receive preventative care..... I realize I’m not big on doctors... but is there another reason a person would go see a doctor, that I’m not aware of?
Sounds like they may not be taking new patients? My docs office goes through this once in a while. It took dh 2+ years to get in. Now its no prob.0 -
I did another .33 mile loop at a slow jog with the pupper tonight. No pain afterward...more of an awareness of my left hip than anything. My heart felt good!
Tomorrow I'm up early to do a Les Mills workout (I have an online subscription). Easy enough to modify or skip parts that aggravate. Trying to get a consistent schedule going so I can keep some level of fitness.1 -
I got released from physio today! So now it really just is about rebuilding volume.
I do have to say that despite hurting all day Saturday from my too-long trail jaunt, I was 85% recovered by yesterday evening and I feel mostly fine now. So I am healing nicely. Just gotta keep doing my physio exercises and not doing dumb things like running 7K in the snow on trails (but they were easy trails! and it was pretty!) when my current max distance is more like 4-5km.
@7lenny7 I was about 3 miles from downtown in a city of almost 1 million when I took that picture.
If you ever want to do a really cool destination trail race come do one of the Edmonton River Valley Revenge races.

I might do the Summer Revenge 50K in 2020 if everything cooperates. Or Winter Revenge 25K.2 -
Hooray @sarahthes and for no pain @fitoverfortymom !!!!1

Yay @sarahthes!!!
So glad you are making progress too @fitoverfortymom!!
Great article @7lenny7! I loved this line at the beginning of it:
'Heck, even not running is risky in its own way, as you’ll never live as much life no matter how safe you are.'
So I thought I would go for a little run this morning but after agility class last night and my little run/walk with Hobbes my foot is feeling really achy. I had even signed up for the Strava Run to Vote challenge 😣
I do have strength training tonight so I will get a workout in.1 -

When anyone tells me how running is bad for your health/joints/knees/whatever, I always tell them that sitting on my cat in front of the TV is a far greater health risk. I'm doing a lot of TV watching now, but I have dumbbells there and am working on upper body strength. I need to start doing the core workout I posted last week. TONIGHT!!

Whenever someone tells me how bad running is for your 'body' I think and sometimes say, that the orthopedic rheumatologist told me to keep running; if I didn't move I would lose the ability to. That and the fact that my cardiac risk factor was always flagged high (over 5) and now it is flagged because it is low (under 2).2

My new cast feels much better than the one they took off. The old one felt like I was wearing a boot two sizes too big. I did go with black.
The nurse was not happy that I showed up with my iWalk. Apparently the doctor is not a fan. They say there's a risk of falling and an increased chance of clotting because it's strapped on to your leg. It doesn't change anything for me though. I feel more stable with this than crutches and I rarely wear it more than 10 minutes at a time.
When I got home I walked out to the backyard and played fetch with Kody for 15 minutes. I couldn't do that with crutches or a knee scooter

I have pain in my opposite foot that has been increasing more and more over the past several weeks. Doctor's appointment Monday. Dr. Google thinks it is a stress fracture .2
-
Thanks @Elise4270 and @shanaber
Sadly diagnosed with a stress reaction in the base of my 5th metatarsal. Luckily it's not bad enough to warrant the boot again (thank goodness!), but I'm out at least 4 weeks from running, and I'm supposed to limit my walking as much as possible for the next week or two. Been doing some swimming the last few days, and I might try biking tonight to see if it hurts. I'm really just struggling to find motivation right now. One stress fracture was bad enough, but I was able to stay optimistic and motivated through the 6 weeks off. This time, I kind of feel like what's the point. This injury is pretty soul crushing for me.
The doctor does suspect my vitamin D could be low, so I had blood drawn yesterday to test my levels. I hope they are low, then at least I have a hope of a stress fracture-free running future! I think once I am able to run again, I'm just going to keep the mileage super low and conservative for 2019. Maybe focus on 5Ks instead of longer distances; that's always been my favorite distance to race, and the one I typically perform best at. I just enjoy marathon training more Trying to look at the upside here but it's hard
@7lenny7 I've been out of the thread for a while so I missed the injury/surgery announcement. I hope the recovery is going well! Thanks for sharing the hurt foot workout videos; I'm gonna have to try them out once I stop feeling too sorry for myself to work out lol
@sarahthes Oh no! I hope Dr. Google is wrong! Where in your foot is the pain? Is there a specific spot on the bone that elicits very sharp pain when you poke it? In my experience, the bone pain feels very cold and sharp, almost like a tiny icicle stabbed into your body. Or similar to tooth pain, if that makes any sense. I also experienced general foot achiness (especially in the arch and joints in the ball of my foot) with both foot stress fractures/reactions I've had. I don't think this is necessarily a hallmark symptom, just something I noticed in both cases. Hope the Drs appointment goes well!1 -
@ariceroni My hip surgeon had my D levels checked because it can cause tendon issues (i guess). I was sure mine would be fine. I'm fairly tanned from being outside hours, even run without a shirt.
My level was 35. And he wanted to see 45. So I wasn't deficient, but lower than i expected. He was only somewhat right.
Good luck!
I noticed Steve Ley commented to someone on Dennis' last strava run that he (Dennis) had a heart attack. Last time i was out at the park there were some young teen girls waiting for the softball field to be unlocked and taunted a guy running by yelling "run faster, run faster". In a moment, i was watching Dennis run past. Always with us.1 -
Clinic doctor thinks it could be a stress fracture. I have an x-ray requisition and will be heading out to get it done in a few minutes (today is a stat holiday in lieu of yesterday so it took a bit to figure out which imaging clinics are actually open today).2
-
Hoping for the best @sarahthes !0
-
Thanks! X-rays done but tomorrow is the earliest I'll hear anything since it's a holiday today. And I'm pretty sure it's a No News Is Good News kind of deal.0
-
@sarahthes so sorry to hear that! I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but x-ray is not a 100% conclusive test for a stress fracture. In fact, they usually won't show up on the x-ray until 2-4 weeks after the fact once bone healing has begun. In my case, only 1 of my 3 stress fractures was actually visible as a crack in the bone on the initial x-ray; the other two were only evident in the follow up x-ray as a bright spot of bone remodeling. An MRI is really the only definitive way to diagnose or rule out a stress fracture/reaction, I think they always order an x-ray first just in case since it's a much easier and less expensive test. Regardless, I hope it is good news and that the clinic doctor is wrong!1
-
@ariceroni I doubt I would get sent for an MRI.
Foot has been hurting off and on for a couple months so maybe something will show. I definitely have point tenderness when it's irritated. It was burny in my arch during/after runs for a while. Now it's burning and stabby during & after runs, and after any extended time on my feet. My PT exercises for the other foot are excruciating on that foot.
Sigh.4 -
@sarahthes - I totally get your pain! Mine isn't burning or stabby but just an ache that doesn't go away and hurts worse when I put pressure on it (standing, running, walking). It also hurts to curl or lift my toes so putting shoes on can bring tears... I am hoping for good news for your foot (and honestly mine too) that it is something easily corrected!1
-
I've been eating like crap, so not posting much on MFP, but the loads of PT is definitely helping my hip. I got to do 15 minutes on the elliptical today and some next-level exercises. I'm feeling super duper hopeful that I'll get to run again before the year is up.2
-
The clinic doctor I saw yesterday just told me not to run and to lose weight. Given that unless it's gotten really bad it won't show up on an x-ray I'm pretty sure they're just going to tell me to stop running.1
-
I saw the podiatrist this afternoon and sadly she thinks it is a probable stress fracture of my 2nd metatarsal. She was surprised at how swollen it is and that I could not really tell but it was very painful in places I didn't even knew hurt when she manipulated it. She showed me some abnormality in the bone on the x-ray that is only apparent on that bone and said it is indicative of a stress fracture. She will take another x-ray in 3 weeks to confirm but in the meantime I am in a boot/shoe thing for those 3 weeks and no running for at least 6 weeks.😢 I am also not supposed to drive but can if I switch to my regular shoe. She also told me I can no longer wear my Topo ST-2s, that I 'need to wear normal running shoes and specifically ones with more cushion that are stiffer'. That is going to be a huge adjustment as I think I will feel like I am wearing weights on my feet...
I was honestly hoping/thinking it was going to be something they could give me a cortisone shot for or something and I could still be running... Now I am feeling super dejected.
Maybe tomorrow I will visit the YMCA and see about swimming there.3 -
Ugh @shanaber That sucks. I hope it heals quickly. I'm not sure i buy that its the shoe, but couldn't hurt to try to work in something like what was suggested.
I ran on the 11th, just 2 slow tm miles. Today I'm finally feeling like i could do another run. The tm
run caused some peroneal tendon/brevis area soreness and i wanted to let that settle before I run again. So, I guess i need to make a plan (and act on it), if i don't want to lose any more cardiovascular endurance. Looks like running regularly is out, least until i can rebuild through these constant issues.
I'm off to confess my eating sins now.1 -
@elise4270 - I had a thought yesterday when I got home, to get rid of my Topos but I couldn't bring myself to do it. My Skoras are pretty much done and I have been thinking about getting rid of them. I am sure I could get a few more runs out of them but the uppers have been glued more than a few times (thank you @LaDispute57 and ShoeGoo) and continue to disintegrate. I put the Topos back in the closet with the thought that when my foot is healthy again I will try maybe rotating them in once a week or something.
Ha @7lenny7 - boot buddies!
My plan today is to get over to the gym and on the bike and then go to the Y and check it out. Not sure how DH will feel about me joining yet another gym but he can go with me for free if I can get him to go.
Question - should I wear the boot in the gym or switch to my gym shoes for the bike? I am not convinced the boot shoe thing will even fit on the bike peddle.1 -
@shanaber I'd forgo the boot in the gym. Although you might want to wrap it good. And depending on your ability to be weight bearing, you may consider crutches.
The biggest concern I'd personally have would be others not being aware that that food needs space. I'd hate to have someone step on it or bump me where I'd lose my balance and be forced to land on that foot.0 -
Thanks @Elise4270 - My thought too was to go with my regular shoe. The gym is big and pretty empty during the day. So I am not too worried about getting bumped but will just take it easy and avoid everyone just in case.

@shanaber so sorry to hear that! Too many of us out with foot problems right now
I was in the boot for 6 weeks over the summer with a 3rd metatarsal SFX. Here's a few things that helped make things easier for me ( @sarahthes could be useful for you too if they put you in a boot, also @7lenny7 since you're in a boot now)
1) Buy shoe lifts to wear in your shoe on the good foot. I had terrible hip/back pain my first week in the boot because of uneven sole heights. Wearing my thickest soled tennis shoe + heel lifts evened out the difference and alleviated this pain
2) Make sure to stretch/strengthen your ankle (the one in the boot) to avoid too much stiffness/weakness once you're out. I would take my boot off 2-3 times a day to do a few minutes of foot rotations. Also did theraband ankle strengthening daily (not the pointing or flexing ones, that puts too much stress on the metatarsals, just inside/outside motion). I had no loss in ankle flexibility and only a little loss of strength over the 6 weeks. Did lose arch strength though, so next time I would include foot doming/towel scrunching exercise if these do not cause pain.
3) I biked in the boot for the first week (it hurt to bike without the boot), but it was hard because the boot didn't fit in the foot straps so my leg kept flying off. After that, I took a spare shoe with me and would keep the boot on until I was in the bike saddle, then put the boot back on as soon as I was done. Same goes for the pool- walk out to the pool in the boot, then leave it (in a plastic bag) by the edge. Just make sure you bring a hand towel to dry your leg off before putting the boot back on!2
