Helene--I haven't seen one of these, but I thik the thing slides to accommodate size of can. The red handle locks it in place and you access top of can to open it via the two vertical structures.

I use one of those combo jar openers with pop top can opening. Those jar openers are the greatest. Put on jar lid and tighten to tightest setting and then turn. If you have weak hands or arthritis in them, they are a major help.

I just use the side of my thumb or finger to lift the pop top. Never have broken a nail doing it, so far. I am starting to notice some joint pain in two fingers of my non-dominant hand, so I may need one of those gadgets Jean mentioned soon. So far I can open most jars using a rubber gripper pad. My biggest challenge is that I have very small hands, so sometimes it is hard for me to get a good grip if the jar or lid is large. But I figure that’s what DH is for. Lol!

I pass any jars I can't open to DH and he opens them for me. I also have a jar wrench that I use if he' not available. I've noticed a little joint pain in my thumbs when getting a manicure. If he holds my thumb in a certain position, I get a twinge. Last time I mentioned it and changed the way he moved my thumb and no more pain.

I'm right-handed, so guess where the arthritis is happening? Primarily, the index finger which I can barely bend now. I don't have a DH so I have to rely upon gadgets.

Up at 5am. Paid bills online. Did 51 minutes of exercise while watching "The Following," a Netflix series. Excellent!

Found this photo with a bowl - can goes in the same place. It adjusts for different sizes.

When I looked at it with no can or bowl, I thought you must have to stand it on end so that the can (I was thinking soda) didn't run out all over the place. To, the photo looked like the can would be laying on it's side. I still can envision how this actually work.

I tried to find a video. This one isn't great but does show a little altho it could be a heck of a lot more informative: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gXDgl9R4nyA

Jean is right about how it works. You put in the two pegs. Snug the can/bowl against the pegs. Lift the lever to loosen the black square. Move the black square along the track until it's snug against the can/bowl on the other side. Then push the lever down to lock into place.

There are several sets of holes for the pegs which lets you adjust for size. I was afraid that it wouldn't be able to hold a small fancy feast can but it can.

I think that would be a handy gadget; I am thinking. Wonder if it is on Amazon?

It is. That's where we ordered it from. There are several different versions, cheapest of which is about $63.

I'll be looking just in case I have a need. Right now, my gadgets are doing the trick.

Jean - that's cute! The therapist asked how I'm doing with buttons and zippers. I thought for a moment and realized I don't really do either. Working at home I live in Lands End sport knit pants and very oversize t-shirts. All perfect for some with a cast! LOL1

Maryanne--The only things I have with zippers is a coat and half the time I wear it without zipping or a few pants. My jackets have buttons but I wear them open. That just leaves some slacks with one button. Pull on works well.

    Love the attitude meme!!

When DH was recovering from bypass surgery, he worked with occupational therapy on life skill. They asked what skills he wanted to learn. He wears golf style shirts. Since he couldn't raise his arms above his shoulders, he had to wear shirts that button up the front. I had to go out and buy some because he didn't have any in his wardrobe. That's what they worked on and within a couple of days, he was able to put his golf shirt on without raising his arms up. I never saw him do it. He was already dressed before I arrived at rehab. Being able to dress as he wanted did wonders for his spirit and recovery.

Good morning on this sunny day! I went to the city yesterday to get my nails done, have lunch with a friend at the Outback, and then shop for groceries. I did a great job of adhering to my shopping list and ignoring the tantalizing lures.

I didn't do my exercise yesterday so I confess that I'm having a difficult time getting back into the routine now that I missed a day.

I'm finally down that pound I've been expecting to show up for the last 2 weeks. It's kind of funny that any loss usually shows up on a Wednesday. It's happened so many time over the years that I don't even expect a loss on any other day, That's 4 pounds down since the first of the year. Two of those pounds are since I started logging.
Jean, It sound like you had a great day in the city. What did you order at Outback. We used to have an Outback but it closed several years ago. I think the problem was they didn't open until 4. Anyone planning on lunch had to go somewhere else. That makes it hard to keep a business open with hours like that. It was confirmed on the new last night that Target is moving into the Mall. Sears had the space for decades but that was one of the stores Sears closed. They said it will be one of Target's smaller stores, because it' existing space. That probably means no grocery section. They should do well since the closest Target is about 30 miles off Cape.

Helene--Congrats upon the weight loss. It can be frustrating when the scale doesn't reward you but when it finally does, it is motivating.

It is funny about Outbacks. The one in the city was part of a national trial by many to see if it would pay off for them to open for lunch. It was a great success and this one opens at 11am and is busy anytime I have been in there during the day. Until they began opening at 11am a few years ago, I rarely ate there as I don't like driving home in the dark over 65 miles of crooked roads. Most of the Outbacks I have seen lately that didn't open until 4pm have been in tourist areas. This Outback is located at the entrance to the mall complex and is on the busiest street in the state. It is also on what we jokingly refer to as "restaurant row."

I like to get the 6oz sirloin with a double serving of steamed veggies. That keeps me going until late evening when I have a light dinner or snack. The sirloin and double serving of steamed veggies comes in at less than 400 calories. They never charge me more for increasing the size of the steamed veggies nor do they charge me for coffee. I also get a 10% AARP discount. The service at this one is fabulous. I ran into my cardiologist having lunch there yesterday also.

I had a fun luncheon yesterday with friends. We were celebrating one of my friend’s birthday and she chose a restaurant I had never tried before. It’s a fairly upscale Italian restaurant. I thought the food was good but not great, but the restaurant itself is gorgeous! We only saw the downstairs dining room and bar area, but it also has outdoor patios and a beautiful upstairs dining area and several private party rooms. I had a dish that was a chicken breast that was pounded very thin and pan fried, then topped with fresh spinach and provolone cheese. This was served over angel hair pasta in a marinara sauce. I was only able to eat half of my serving, so I brought the rest home and will probably have it for dinner tonight.

Today I decided to try on some clothes I haven’t been able to wear for awhile. I was pleasantly surprised that most of them fit and even looked pretty good. There is still room for improvement, but I was delighted to be able to wear them comfortably. One dress in particular I almost didn’t even try thinking that I’m still at least 10 pounds away from wearing it. I decided to try it anyway and was shocked that I could actually zip it all the way up! It’s a straight sheath design, so I really didn’t expect it to zip past my hips. It was a little more snug than I like, but I was so encouraged that I could get into it at all. It was a good reminder that the scale doesn’t tell the full story.

Although I haven’t been doing cardio exercise, I have been doing strengthening and toning exercises since I started losing weight. I had developed a roll around my midsection that I hated and I was determined to work on getting rid of it. I have significantly reduced it, I’m happy to say, although it isn’t completely gone yet. That was part of what I was assessing while trying on clothes this morning — how my midsection looked in these clothes. For the most part, I was happy with my results. A bonus is that these exercises have been good for my back as well. I’m having much less back pain.

I think today I may go and get my nails done. With DH out of town, I like to get out of the house at least once a day so I have a chance to talk to someone besides myself.

Pam--Your luncheon sounds as if it was a real treat, with a very yummy entrée. It is great that you are finding the clothes to fit better; the toning exercises are really paying off.

    Isn't this meme the truth?

Of course the food that had in biblical days didn't have all the chemicals and additives we have to put up with now. Great cartoon.

Woke up at 3am but couldn't go back to sleep so I "rised and shined" at 4am. It is going to be a long day.

My right hand is having an arthritis attack; the index finger will barely move. The ortho said that finger was "bone on bone." I have a bunch of weeding to do and then apply weed killer.

I had the usual breakfast of Southwestern eggbeaters with salsa added and am now working on my coffee.

    Great cartoon!

Jean - anything they suggest for the finger?

I met my new hand therapist yesterday. We got off to a good start when I was able to tell her where my prior therapist went (she worked with her years ago) and fill her in on a little of the goings on at that clinic. They had heard she was changing jobs and were dying to know where she was going.

I also learned that my gut feelings were correct. This therapist sees one patient at a time. She said that's become very unusual and is the reason she's never moved on. I thought it did.'t feel optimum to have a 45 minute appointment with a therapist that was seeing as many as 3 other people at the same time. I have 6 weeks of appt's set up.

Maryanne--He said cortisone shots would not work well for the problem as use of the finger inappropriately now would cause the pain or any swelling. When working, I am supposed to "buddy tape" it to the adjoining finger to keep from using it by itself or put one of those foam finger and toe bandages on it to protect it.

When I did my physical therapy, the PT had two clients at a time. It worked out well for me but the PT was very vigilant at demonstrating, giving instructions to each and then keeping an eye on both.
