2018--Striving to Make This Year Our Best Possible

There are two toys our guys go back to over and over:
One is no longer made but I think any toy that's a small object at the end of a cord would create the same excitement.
The other is the star chaser: https://www.chewy.com/bergan-star-chaser-turbo-scratcher/dp/49194?gclid=CjwKCAiAo8jgBRAVEiwAJUXKqE0qyciy5BlGWUkwn9cNzwGLp4VZRnHRpnWW3_JzBKxqd-zmcCSy2RoClGwQAvD_BwE0 -
I just read what we all said on January 1. I started the year out so well and kept it up for a few months. I am actually afraid to get on the scales as this is one holiday that I've ignored eating on plan.
Maryanne--I didn't have the star chaser but had something similar to it with no luck. Midnight doesn't like boxes or the neat gadgets other cats do. He bores easily; his idea of play is getting me up at night.0 -
I ignored eating on plan all summer. Blamed it on the wrist of course.
Hopefully I'm back on now.0 -
I just went back to page 1 to see what I put for my 2018 goals or plans. I’d have to claim partial victory since I did manage to lose weight and get into an exercise routine, though not the one I had planned. I also talked about decluttering my closet and other areas in my home. I did work on my closet and have kept it in pretty good shape, but haven’t really worked on other areas of my house. So I guess my goals for next year will be to maintain my weight loss, add cardio to the exercise routine, and work on decluttering some other areas of my home.0

I looked back and saw I was going to get more regular with exercise. I did fairly well for the first few months. DH and I were going to the Rec center and using the treadmill. We slacked off when we left FL. I renewed our membership last week. Now we just need to start showing up.0

Good news! I got a call from the therapy center. Someone canceled their appointment next Wednesday and they wanted to know if I wanted it. Heck yes! So my evaluation will be 10 days earlier than expected.0

From January 2:
I'm 9 pounds down from last January 1 so I didn't give it all back. Not quite anyway. I hate New Year's resolutions but I think they started for a good reason. We all just lived through the holidays! I actually lost a pound and a half over the holidays. While I haven't been all that careful I also didn't buy all the "stuff" I often buy over the holidays.
Now I guess I need to go back and see what that translated to in terms of weight.
Ancestry DNA says I'm genetically sensitive to sweets. Not a surprise!
We're supposed to have rain through Sunday so I assume that means not freezing!0 -

And hopefully in addition to an evaluation they can start you on the at home exercises.
Therapists are apparently all over the place on that. The first one I saw this summer gave me two xerox'd pages full of exercises along with the softest exercise putty (I ended up ordering myself a whole set although I'll never use the BLACK ONE LOL!). The second one went with the flow but later as I got to know her she admitted she never gives anyone more than four exercises because she's afraid they won't follow through.0 -
This will be my first PT experience. I don’t mind doing at home exercises but I hope the therapist guides me in exercises at the center. There are 2 centers on the island. The one I picked is closest to my house. My chiropractor and the doctor I saw at the walk in clinic said both centers are excellent. So I’m counting on that being true.
I’m starting back logging my food today. I was pretty regular until my computer crashed. I’m mostly using the new IPad now so I have no excuse not to get back to logging.0 -
Helene--The PT will show you what to do and will monitor you closely to see that the exercises are being done correctly. They will usually have you to do a warm up of some type in order for the muscles to be more receptive to the exercises.0

One thing I learned this summer is that there are two kinds of physical therapy: individual and group. Group is obviously more lucrative for the owners. Unfortunately, Medicare reimbursement also favors group and apparently will do so even more next year.
The first place I went is owned by the orthopedic surgeons and is the group model (I was seldom there alone and never for the whole session; she usually had 2-3 other people at the same time PLUS walk-ins to have splints made). The therapist told me on the first day that she was leaving in 2 weeks. I hope even if she hadn't I'd have looked around for options. The therapist was pretty good at keeping everyone working but there were times, especially when she's get a walk-in, that it couldn't have been more obvious that she was looking for things to keep the rest of us busy. The second place I went still does individual sessions. My therapist told me it's now in the minority and is the reason she's never left. She could make more money but doesn't feel she'd be helping as much. I'm glad I found them!
Both rely on you doing your homework at home.

I’ve done both forms of PT and don’t really have a preference. I will say that the place where I’ve experienced group PT was well run and well staffed and the therapists all worked together to keep everyone on task. If my therapist was busy when I finished up a set of exercises, one of the others would always notice and get me started on the next thing I needed to work on. I rarely went more than a couple of minutes before being instructed what to do next. Any of their staff would correct your form if they noticed you doing an exercise incorrectly as well. The atmosphere there was always light with a lot of teasing and jokes, so the time went by quickly. In the places where I had a dedicated therapist the whole time I didn’t feel I had a better outcome; it was just different. As long as I don’t spend a lot of time waiting around for assistance, I don’t care which format is used.0

Since this is my first experience with PT, I’ d prefer individual instruction. Once I know what I’m doing, I could probably do either style. As long as l’m improving.0

Pam - that makes more sense than my experience. The place I went it was only the one hand therapist and she was totally responsible for all the hand patients. No one else paid any attention to us (and visa versa). She had her little corner (her little fiefdom).0
-
I think hand therapy may be a different animal for PT. At the place I described, there was only 1 hand therapist and he did move between various clients at a long table. He rarely had more than 3 clients at a time, at the very most. While he occasionally interacted with and assisted the rest of us, no one else could assist with his clients. I think hand therapy requires a specialization and therefore there are fewer therapists who can do this type of work.0

I got a new laptop so all those things I had saved made for easy access but not now. I think I've gotten all taken care of. This week is the last week of the first semester since we start school in early August. It is great to have it end with the start of the Christmas break.0

Every time my email provider gets wonky (and it's happened more than once) I think about everything stored in those folders. And a couple days ago for some reason I was browsing some old messages on my once upon a time cat bulletin board (it's like a ghost town now) and thinking about all the memories there are in those old messages.0

I saw an ad for my therapy place on the back of my church bulletin. It says one to one so I guess that answers my question about Single or group therapy.0

This makes me think of the relationship I have with Midnight when it comes to "doctoring:"

Jean - good one!
I've had some pretty good injuries over the years. Been to urgent care more than once. Let's see: once with a Bandit bite; once with a Lola bite; once with a Jessicat bite.0 -
