Good morning, everyone! This is the first of the year, a time many make resolutions. I think research says that these lofty goals rarely last through January. Perhaps that is because they are not realistic. Instead, perhaps we need to focus upon smaller goals, goals that once accomplished do make a difference in the long run.

Success leads to more success! With that thought it mind, it makes sense to focus upon smaller goals that once accomplished give us the motivation to set another goal.

Have a great year! Make a difference!

I am on Day 3 of eating better and I have exercised for 45 minutes each for the past two evenings while watching House. I have also gone back to posting my food.

I think my goal will be to maintain my loss from last year by continuing on the same eating plan I’ve been using, and to try to add in more cardio in addition to the other exercises I’ve been doing. My other goal is to become more consistent about keeping my home cleaner and less cluttered.

Pam--Those are reasonable goals. Less cluttering is on my agenda also, something I worked on this morning.

Time flies! I just noticed that we moved to MFP in April of 2015. It will soon be four years that we have been posting here.

I'd very much like to strive to lose 20 pounds this year, which would put me 40 pounds under my all time highest weight. Still above where I should be but I think a reasonable goal.

A week ago I would have said I'd like to get back into strength training in addition to the treadmill BUT apparently I need to be cautious about doing that due to high blood pressure. Something else I need to read up on.

Happy New Year everyone. I’ll be continuing my pt for the next month. I missed Monday’s appointment. There were 5 Mondays in the month. I misread my calendar and thought my time was later in the day. They called to tell me I’d missed my appointment. I have one Wednesday and rescheduled the missed appointment on Friday. But by Wednesday, it will be a week since my last therapy. And the dull ache is more sore than when I was on schedule. I’ll just have to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Researching strength training and high blood pressure makes sense. I thought any exercise was good but what do I know. Perhaps you can do very light weighs (2 pounds) to start. Let us know what you find out. I’d be interested.

Jean & Pam, your goals sound reasonable and achievable. Maryanne, your 20 pounds is just a bit more than a pound a month. You can do that for sure.

Maryanne--I'm sure you can meet the 20 pounds lost goal. Love the memes.

Helene--Sorry you missed the PT appointment. Hopefully, the missed time will not result in your having to play "catch up."

I'm watching the news and focusing upon the reality that when it is over, I have a date with House and exercise. But first, I almost forgot to log my food. Off to do that!

I got in my exercise watching "Botched." I haven't seen it for several months. I like seeing what I call legitimate reasons for plastic surgery as opposed to extreme enlargements of the boobs.

Good morning, everyone! The Christmas break is officially over but I'm thinking of not accepting any jobs if offered the rest of the week. It is the beginning of the second semester so I don't see any teachers being absent but who knows? Monday, I have an orthopedic appointment. Today, I have to max out my efforts as trash pickup is tomorrow.

I did my mid-week scale check in. I have lost 2 pounds since Sunday but we all know that is water loss. I like those Pure Protein breakfast bars so well that I have ordered them from Amazon. They look small but they take time to eat and they fill you up. Has 12gm of protein, which is more protein than in eggs or oatmeal. 200 calories----and they taste great!

Jean - I like the Nature Valley oatmeal squares for the occasional breakfast en route somewhere and the idea of something like that with protein is exciting! I'm definitely going to try.

Marianne--I was going through the local drugstore when I spied them on the shelf but there were only two packages. I looked for them at WalMart when I was there and not finding them, I did find them on Amazon. They have options to order just by flavor or there is one in which you get 18 of mixed flavors. The price is reasonable compared to what I paid at the Drug Store. I've tried the Nature Valley oatmeal squares but they didn't stay with me to fight hunger.

I’m a fan of the Zone Perfect nutrition bars, also available on Amazon. They typically have about 10 grams of protein and I find them very filling. My favorite flavor is oatmeal chocolate chunk, followed by the double dark chocolate bar. They also have a cinnamon roll bar that is somewhat similar to one that NS has. I can find them at Target, but they are cheaper on Amazon.

I had an interesting day yesterday. I became aware around noon that I had an odd pain in my chest. It wasn’t crushing pain or pressure, but it was persistent. DH asked me to check my BP and it was pretty high. I waited an hour and checked it again and it was even higher, so we went to the ER. When you walk into an ER and say you have chest pain, they take you straight to a room! There was such a flurry of activity getting me into a gown, into a bed, leads attached, BP cuff on, ID bracelets on, etc. They attempted to take a blood sample to check for the hormone level that indicates a heart attack, but my veins were uncooperative. All of this is going on while I was being peppered with questions about my health history, medications, description of the pain, etc. They made multiple attempts to get a blood sample and start an IV and finally brought in a paramedic who was able to get one tube of blood from my tiny vein. They also sent in a male nurse who finally got the IV started, although nothing was ever given by that route. I was given an aspirin and a nitroglycerin tablet and monitored for about 4 hours. A lot of that time was just waiting for them to send someone in to try again to get a tube of blood, and then after they were finally successful in that, waiting for the results. In the end, I was told that it was non specific chest pain but not a heart attack, and I’m being advised to consult a cardiologist and have a stress test. So that’s how my 2019 started out!

Pam - I'm all too familiar with what happens when you walk into an ER with chest pains or a racing heartbeat. Done it twice. First time they found nothing. Second time they decided I had to give up decongestants (that was after about 12 hours).

Here's hoping the cardiologist finds nothing important!!!!!

Pam--As I am one of those with a heart issue, I do hope that it is not one for you. Interesting note is that my heart never showed anything on a stress test. It took 30 days of wearing a monitor to verify suspicions.

I think the recommendation to see a cardiologist was mostly due to family history, in particular the recent death of my brother from what we assume to have been a heart issue. From the lack of urgency after the initial flurry of activity, I’m pretty sure the doctor had ruled out a heart attack within the first 20 minutes. I was there nearly 3 hours before they even got a tube of blood to check for the hormone that indicates a heart attack, and by that time I think they did it just to cover their bases. I had a stress test many years ago, but I know things can change. I may wait until later this month to follow up, after I’ve discussed it with my new doctor. I have an appointment at the end of the month as a follow up to my first visit. He wanted me to go off the blood pressure medication and come back in 3 months to assess how I did without it.

Pam==I hope the follow up appointment with your new doctor goes well and that you are doing well without the bp med.

I just had a breakfast of the Special K breakfast sandwich. This afternoon, I go to see the lawyer to change my will as some family situations have changed.

Well, the Special K breakfast sandwich is not holding off hunger as much as the Pure Protein breakfast bar. I am hungry and it is mid-morning!

When DH had his heart attack 4 years ago, we went to the ER because he had trouble catching his breath. We thought pneumonia but the hospital knew immediately it was a heart attack. Like Pam, we spent all day in ER for tests. By the end of the day, he had stents and was admitted to the hospital. His attack was complicated by pneumonia. With treatment and following Doctors instructions, he hasn’t had a second attack. I hope Pam’s turns out to be nothing but I’m glad she’s going to follow up with her doctor.

My PT was good and I haven’t the sharp pains I had before PT. I still have the dull ache but the change in pain level tells me we’re on the right track. He added some new moves yesterday. I rolled a squishy ball up the wall. It was harder to do than l expected. I slacked off on the home exercises a bit while I’ve had company. They leave today so I’ll get back on track. My goal is to be pain free by the time my therapy ends.

Barack Obama and Christopher Jackson hit the Billboard Hot R&B chart (and yes, I already bought it). The last ever apparently HamilDrop (new song from Lin Manual Miranda that came out weekly last year).

The cardiologist said that in a way I was "lucky" to have high blood pressure because the meds are protective of the heart. I haven't researched that much. Don't want to terrify myself. But I suspect that wouldn't be true for heart issues caused by clogged arteries. But that's not my heart's issue.

Helene--Good news on the PT. The pain free goal by PT's end is a definite goal!

    Maryanne--Love the goal meme!!

I made it to the lawyer appointment. Looking at a new will by next Wednesday.

Jean - you know the old saying "a fool for a client"? In that spirit, I have to admit I wrote my will. For a very brief period years ago our boss made us do estate planning - something we were SO not competent to do - but it did leave us with some basic will templates which I used.
I'm not too worried about it. If I die first, DH gets most everything (a few minor bequests to CROM and a few to family members - e.g. I have both grandmothers' wedding and engagement rings as well as my mother's and I'd want those to go to my sister rather than DH). I guess if he died first, I probably should have someone who knows what they're doing write me a new will.

I like the goal memee, too. I'd like to have the problem of trying to decide what to do after meeting a goal. Feels like it's been awhile. LOL!

I got Roxanne St. Clair's latest newsletter. I love her Dogfather books. A friend lent me the Christmas one and I realized I missed the last one so I dug into that first. Apparently she already has FOUR more covers than she has books. She's filming them at an animal sanctuary. They all feature a man and a rescue dog (what's not to like). What struck me is she says she's still writing the next book but expects to have it out shortly - maybe February. We have an adoptive parent who is a NY Times best selling author. I emailed her and asked her if that was feasible and she says for indie publishing it is. But the danger is bad or no editing. I hadn't noticed the Dogfather books are indie published. But generally speaking I certainly have noticed books with horrible errors in the last few year. Sometimes you wonder whether anyone actually read the book before they his "print".

Maryanne--I basically knew what I wanted to do. I have a niece that none of us approve of her actions and how she uses things or money. I don't plan to have much left when I check out but I wanted to make sure that she got something but not to the degree of the others and if she should die before me and I don't have a chance to change my will, I wanted to make sure her share would not go to her kids. I'm having the real estate sold if still owned, and having part of the sale to go to Marshall University. My body also goes to the Marshall University Medical School. I just wanted to make sure everything was legally appropriate under our state laws. I've been through that in which a parent died one day before the new laws went into effect.
