Happy that I met my goal of Tracking and Water. Going to try that again..with a few better choices today.3 -
Bethanie, we are glad to have you in the step challenge! It can't do anything but help you as you try to "show your doctor" just what you CAN do! Seriously, though, keep up the good work. Those are great miles you've logged last week. As you continue to make progress, you may find that some of the health problems begin to require less medicine, which will make more progress even easier. You may find that your progress snowballs once it gets rolling. Good luck moving forward! We are here for you!
And I'm hypothyroid *insert eyeroll here*
It's like the perfect storm of BS. But I love this group; I'm glad I found it and stuck with it.6 -

Mission Slimpossibles' Appalachian Trail Thru-Hike Challenge
The Southern Terminus to Neel Gap
Distance so far: 37.5 miles
Our view from the top of Springer Mountain, the official beginning point of the AT:
We made it up the Approach Trail to the summit of Springer Mountain, the official beginning of the Appalachian Trail. Pat yourself on the back. That was quite a climb! Today we see the first white blaze like all those countless blazes which will mark this trail for nearly 2200 miles. It is painted on a boulder at the top of which you will also find the iconic plaque marking the significance of this trail.
The plaque seen below with the first white blaze reads: “Appalachian Trail, A Footpath for Those who seek Fellowship with the Wilderness.” Someone once described the trail this way, “Remote for detachment, narrow for chosen company, winding for leisure, lonely for contemplation; it beckons not merely north and south, but upward to the body, mind, and soul of man.” –Harold Allen
We also climbed the tallest mountain on the Georgia section of the AT in our first 37 miles, Blood Mountain. Rumor is that the name of Blood Mountain came from a particularly bloody battle between Cherokee and Creek Indians. There is also a nearby Slaughter Gap named for the same battle. Although that may be a bit disconcerting, the views certainly are anything but troubling. Check this out!
Because we are such awesome steppers, we also made it all the way to Neel Gap, home of the famous Mountain Crossings store at Walasi-yi (the Cherokee name for this gap). The AT literally goes right through the building, but the neatest thing about Mountain Crossings is the tree outside. If you look closely you will see many pairs of hiking boots and shoes literally hanging from the branches. It is tradition that hikers who complete the AT will often return to this spot and throw their boots up into the tree in appreciation of the folks who run this special place.
Exercise challenge for today: After logging some incredible miles over some major climbs, be sure you do some extra stretching or some yoga moves today to help avoid injury. Here’s one site with some ideas for us:

Sorry for missing out on the first weigh in, I’ve been sunning myself for a few days, quick break away.

Weigh in day : Sunday
Week : 1
Starting weight : 160.1
To reintroduce myself for new joiners, I’m Jill, from Ireland, 2 kids, work outside the home. I’ve been part of this group for quite a while but I can’t for the life of me think how long! My weight loss is slow but I would have been close to 190lb at my heaviest (outside of pregnancy, more like 230lb then)
I walk a lot and jog a bit and thanks to Terri I get to compete in Fitbit challenges which I love! Best of luck to anyone newly joined3 -
I am after a bit of inspiration as my morale is very low at realising only last week exactly how much I weigh. I think it has finally got to me. I need it gone. I had to be part of a public artist talk on the weekend for a show Im in and it was hard to look at the photos. I feel like I am meeting a lot of new people at the moment but feels like they dont know who I am because no one can "see" me if you know what I mean. the weight is hiding me. I happy at this point to lose 32 lbs. But wishing I could do it in 3 months , but no idea if thats reasonable.1

Well, not happy to have a gain but considering how much trail mix I had while watching Gone With The Wind and how much pasta, chocolate and wine I had on Saturday for my birthday, I going to call the week a success.

Appalachian Trail Mission Slimpossibles Thru Hike Step Challenge
Distance so far: 107 miles
Today, we passed the 100-mile mark in our trek along the Appalachian Trail. That is always a milestone that makes thru-hikers feel like they might actually be able to walk all the way from Georgia to Maine. There’s been a lot of rain and a little snow this week on the Southern stretch of trail. Sometimes, the trail looks like a creek…
sometimes, it has been a winter wonderland:
This could be us, camping in a tent that weighs less than two pounds,
in temps so low that we woke up to a water bottle that we kept in our tent, only to find it frozen solid, like this!
The highlight of this little section was a quick detour just off the trail to the quaint little town of Helen, Georgia. Helen is a town which decided, years ago, to brand itself as a Bavarian Alpine town, complete with winding roads and small-town charm. During our little break from the trail, we experienced a German meal, complete with polka music and dancing, which will be the inspiration for our Exercise Challenge at the end of this post. :-)
After leaving Helen, we continued walking north, finishing the miles of the trail that run through the state of Georgia. We have finished our first state, of 14, and now cross into North Carolina. YAY!
We completed the Georgia miles at 78.5, before venturing on until we reached Albert Mountain Fire Tower at mile 100. Fire towers are one of my favorite features along any trail through the southern forests. They were used in the days before mass communication to have a man literally always on the lookout for forest fires. Often a log or stone cabin was built on a high ridge where the fire lookout would live, sometimes followed by the construction of metal towers that reached to the sky and provided long-range views of the mountains and forests for 360-degree observation. Albert Mountain is the first such example we will encounter along our trip. All of them are spectacular on a clear day, although it can be a bit scary climbing those open, metal stairs, especially if the wind is blowing. Those towers can really rock!
Exercise Challenge: inspired by our time spent in Helen, Georgia, here is a short video that you can use to exercise to the polka in the privacy of your own home. It’ll definitely be good for a laugh! I apologize if, after viewing this, you cannot “unsee” it. It affected me that way, too. LOL

For real, though, here is a video of Body Groove, one of my favorite at-home exercise routines. I’m just glad y’all can’t see me when I do the Body Groove videos. The effect might be similar to what you experienced while watching the Polka video above. They are good exercise and really are fun! The link here is a mix of a bunch of short videos you can string together for a pretty great workout. (Note: the link goes to the first video, but when it ends, you should see a "Playlist-22" that you can click on for more. Or just YouTube search for Body Groove.)
