Pouring rain today. My fatigue is really bad too. I count it a win I got up and dressed. Some days you just don't have any spoons. -_-

Last night we binged an entire season of a show called That Time I Was Reincarnated as a Slime. So this week has been video games and cartoons. It occurs to me that I'm not much of an adult.

Just throwing a question out here. My 15 year old son, who's been running with me, is really keen on gaining some muscle. He's never enjoyed the usual sports, ball games etc (he prefers a good book) but wants to feel strong and healthy (currently very tall and skinny ;) )
Is it safe for him to start lifting weights and does anyone know of a program/YouTube channel safe for that age group?
I only started looking after my body in my 30's LOL so clueless here...

Yes, it's safe. Though he may not see much results for a while since he's early into puberty and muscle growth requires all those hormones. So make sure he doesn't get impatient and hurt himself.

My son started working out around that age, and it was fantastic the results he was able to build, without ever getting crazy and into bulk, cutting, and all that nonsense. He was lucky to have a good coach for basketball who got him onto a sane gym routine. I strongly suggest a session or two with a trainer who knows what is what for adolescents, if possible. If not, weirdly enough, I think some programs aimed at women who are getting serious about muscle toning are a great place to begin. Kelly Lee has a lot of good ones on youtube but there are more if you're willing to pay a modest amount for a Grokker subscription. If he really wants a guy to play along with, take a look at gmb.io for good articles on keeping safe and sane while training, and some quite unorthodox training methods. For the tried and true, there are a lot out there. It depends a lot on what kind of equipment you have or are willing to get. The most cost effective and fun one I can think of is the TRX (or other knock-off suspension training systems). There are tons of good videos, countless exercises, and it is all based on your own body weight. Can you tell my son and I had a lot of fun over this stuff? He's still my fave fitness consultant. At 22 he could be an underwear model...

    Good luck with it!

IDK what hit me yesterday afternoon and evening, but I was too weak to exercise at all! This just supports my own theory (that I haven't put into practice consistently) that getting up at 4 am to workout is far better because at that hour, no one needs you, and your day hasn't gotten crazy yet or taken unexpected turns. Well I've got a lot of steppin to do between now and Saturday night if I'm going to make my 100,000 step goal. I'm almost halfway there.

Happy 4th of July everyone!

I hear that song! I am also having to make sure I get my exercise done early now. For years while I was working I always did that. But since retiring, I have a habit of exercising in the afternoon. Now that is not so good in summer - it is too hot, or I work in the garden all morning and then feel too tired, or busy, or there is housework, or (insert excuse here). I did the early (NOT 4 am!!) thing today, and it felt good! I was more tired when working outside afterwards, but that was OK. Slow is not bad. Let us know how it goes! And keep on steppin'

I had one more idea for next week's challenge. It combines aspects of NEAT and finding ways to amp up our ordinary movements. And it is ridiculous. But hopefully effective.

Some of you might be old enough to have been Monty Python's Flying Circus fans. Remember the Ministry of Silly Walks? cx3a6xsvgjvb.png

Well why not challenge everyone to implement silly walking into their trips from the kitchen to the bathroom, the livingroom to the kitchen, the parking lot to the store entrance (only for the bravest and least shy among us!)? High knees, use a mini band to do "monster walks" (forwards, sideways, back - they're seriously silly looking but work the hips like mad), walking lunges, hopping on one foot, fire hydrant walking, skipping - it could get mighty silly. And build muscle. And burn calories.
    dtblf196xwkg.png9p5cd2ch04rd.png

So far the list of possibles for our challenge to the other teams:

DE-CLUTTER do some every day. Tell about it.
Increase Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis (moving around more when not exercising) - share yours!
    4 circles method goal setting
Silly Walks - with photos, line drawings, and absurd descriptions to be posted.

If you have a grand preference for a ONE WEEK challenge that could be compatible with vacation mind-sets all while meeting our GREEN JULY pounds lost pledges - let me know! We still have a couple of days to decide.

    thanks!

Funny enough my 15 year old came downstairs last night and said mom can I come on your workout with you tomorrow? I need to start taking care of myself more lol. Of course I told him he is more than welcome when I start up again as eight this minute I can’t do much at all until I get cleared from my surgeon. I am excited that he is wanting to be more active tho. He is also not into sports. He is more of a drawing and reading kinda guy as well. He is quite short for his age and a bit thick (not fat) so I think it would do wonders for his stele esteem to build some muscle and feel like I do after my workouts lol powerful!! He had previously started a 3’daynplan at my gym. My trainer said he was ready and made him his own program to follow which he did until for a few months. But then he don’t want to go anymore 😭. I’m sure there are many things he can try on YouTube aimes for teens and women that would be good for him. Let me know how it goes for your son.

Not bad, considering that this was "the week that was" so far as being out-of-routine exercise-wise, being on edge myself .... while keeping Mom more settled about the whole thing. And my planned work-around for yesterday (to avoid exposure to the on-site Tim Hortons coffee-and-doughnuts/bagels/giant cookies/oversized muffins shop) worked well.

Anyone from Canada will know EXACTLY what that means in terms of potential stress-eating temptations.

You are on vacation! No adulting required (for the time being). look at the "no adulting meme" hits. My to faves so far are "I don't want to adult, I don't even want to human ... today, I want to bunny." (picture of sleeping bunny)

and "I drink coffee because I am an adult. Otherwise, I am basically a 2-yr old whose security blankie is in the wash"

Right now, I am sipping on my Raspberry Chocolate (flavour baked into beans then ground / brewwed at home - not syrup-shot type) flavoured coffee.

Tomorrow is MY day for pacing the Day Surgery waiting room (re a relatively simple thing for my mom). Here's hoping there is "Guest Wi-Fi" in the hospital waiting room so that I can "do some cross-stitching" while I wait! (the most "zen" of my available options ....

yes there was guest-wi fi available. the current cross-stitch is over 95% complete at more that 4 hrs cumulative "stitching/app play" time. I haven't figured out how to print it/them yet .... but if I do, I will scan and share.

@evangsimmons170 you mentioned last month that you are (or trained as or have the know-how related to) fashion design.

How I envy that skill set.

I have a pretty good eye for seeing HOW something is constructed. And I have always looked at patterns and thought about how I might make this-or-that cosmetic adaptation to a neckline, or with trimmings, to a basic line for a personal touch of flair. I DO look best in clean simple lines and always have.

But my practical-assembly skills have always lagged far behind what I might want to make. And I was never the rectangle shape of most easy-to-sew patterns. They just make me look bigger than I actually am.

I HAVE taken a "how to adapt a commercial pattern" course, and have illustrated books on the topic. And you are SOOO right that it is hard to alter (take in OR let out) already-constructed garments. Altering clothes down can be tricky-to-impossible depending on your skill level (mine isn't super-high) and the seams in question. Enlarging is often right out of scope, even on simple things.

Now that I am 3 months into maintenance, I am actively looking at sewing patterns again (now that I have less fear of changing sizes and actually out-growing things between the time I cut them out and the time they are stitched up&hemmed.)

Does anyone else sew or textile hand-craft? (be it embroidery, needlework pictures of some sort, or knitting / crocheting)

I've been crafty ever since I can remember. Jack-of-all-types, master of none.

Up at 4:30 am. Haven’t been sleeping well for the past couple of weeks. Been averaging 4-5 hours a night. I think the early sunlight has something to do with it as we have to sleep with the windows open. As soon as the light hits me I’m wide awake. It’s so flipping annoying. Gonna start to slowly get ready for my day. I have my appointment with my surgeon this morning and hopefully they will remove this drain and check how the wound is healing up. I hope I can take a full shower tonight. Haven’t had a shower since Wednesday morning and I am stanky. Have a blessed day peeps.

Oh Stanky One! I hope you have a good result from your appointment and can hop into the shower tonight. I also suggest a good eye mask shade thing. I have one for those early morning light problems, and it is amazing. My sister gave it to me (it is soft, fuzzy, and wonderful) and at first I scoffed, but it is magic. I go right back to sleep as soon as I put it on at those early hours. Give it a try!

@Perla4686 - so glad to see your correction! I was confused for a minute there...

Good Friday weigh-ins so far! Except for mine which is stuck... I wish I could have used yesterday's weight! I find when I do some pedalling on the exercise bike at night before going to bed my weight in the morning is significantly less. Temporarily :/ So thanks to the rest of you for greening things up!

@BMcC9 - I am a sewing fanatic, at least during the winter when it is harder to be outside for long hours. I love to sew and I'm pretty good at it, for someone without one of those fancy overlock machines. I'm hard to fit, being just a hair over 5 feet tall, so I have often made clothes, altered things, etc. My parents are both singers/actors, so I started out doing theatre costumes while in high school. You can cheat like mad on those - if it doesn't show, it doesn't count! So my finer skills came along later. I was lucky quite a few years ago to be given a large amount of various fabrics by a wonderful old lady I knew. She had always sewn everything for herself and her daughter, and over the years had collected massive amounts of beautiful fabrics. I have slowly gone through most of them, and it was a total pleasure. I have no patience for knitting or needle work, though. It's too slow!
