Another good busy day….getting into the groove!

So….. last night our central air conditioning system died. The forecast for today is 101 degrees and 75% humidity. And a miserable weekend and weeks ahead.
Can’t open windows cause it’s worse outside than inside thus far. Of course it’s a weekend so no chance of repairman showing up at my doorstep for days.
It’s not an old system and was just fine until….. new system is in the $15,000 to $20,000 range! 🤯😱🥵

Oh, Geez. Yooly. How are you going to get through the weekend? Malls? Restaurants? Library?

Wow - that is a lot of money. Must be a much bigger/more complex system than what we need up here.

Great work, Connie. Hope this is the end of the bump in the road. (for us both :) )

Yup a boatload of money. It’s an AC and heat pump system. Does cooling and heating because our house is all electric. No gas lines in the area and no basements for forced air furnaces. Ductwork in the ceilings rather than floor. Houses here are built on concrete slabs.
It looks like they might be able to install tomorrow. The finances are another thing. There will be some belt tightening for sure.

I'm lucky - my place is small. I get away with a window air-conditioner - not the best - but works well enough and it only cost ??? I think around $150...lol. My house is heated by a gas fireplace. No forced air - no ductwork - no basement. When I redid the bathroom a few years ago I put electric infloor heating beneath the tiles - that is a nice heat. Very simple overall though! The price tag you mentioned put a frog in my throat.

We have two air units ( central heat and air )…we had to replace the one on the kids end of the house…the one on our end keeps getting repaired but the cold air works….we never had the heat element replaced but haven’t missed it yet for two winters!….no basements here either, cement slabs mostly to prevent termites….good luck Yooly!

Well so much for replacing my 20 year old car 🚘! Unfortunately AC is not optional here. More like life or death 💀. The overhead fans are helping some.

I remember in my dim past living in temperate places where one could open windows or use a window AC. Fireplaces and cast iron stoves. I grow nostalgic - or maybe just having a heat stroke?

Though we are in a temperate zone - our winter doesn't feel it! - but the fireplace is pretty impressive! It is like a forced air furnace without ductwork. House is small enough for it to heat the main areas well. My bedroom gets a bit cool - but that is what dogs and blankets are for. I forgot the dog when describing my heating system :)
  • So after dinner tonight, my boyfriend proposed and I accepted. No ring, cause finances are tight. But he ordered me a custom statue for my Ice Age Mammal collection, and I think I like that better anyway. (It's a Short-Faced Bear.)

I'm so very happy. Yes, I cried a little. It's all good.

Congratulations 🎉🎈🍾 Alexandra! How wonderful for both of you.
  • We're planning to actually get married next spring when both our parents can be there, and as his mother, especially, is having increasing mobility issues, we are keeping an eye on what will work for them and going more with that. We both had big party weddings the first time, we are good with a courthouse visit or even something in my in-law's living room so that they can be there.

Also I am not doing a traditional engagement ring; I am doing a wedding ring with rubies and diamonds inset so that I can wear it nearly all the time and not get the stone of a traditional ring caught on everything. I do way too much work with my hands to be good with something elaborate.

    Congratulations, Alexandra!!!

I'm so sorry about your AC, Yooly. That's a whole lot of money and inconvenience.

🍾 Woohoo!!!! Alexandra. Congratulations. You are certainly a keeper for life. I would marry you sight-unseen for all the goodness that radiates from your posts (and your cooking and food organizing :) )
Can't wait for a picture or two??????

What a relief that must be, Yooly! We went from melting point a few days ago to shivering the past few mornings. Air conditioner to fireplace coming on overnight...lol. Suddenly 85 sounds wonderful :)

New AC system is installed and pumping away - cause it’s 100 degrees again today.
But so heavenly cool inside after 3 days of sweaty exhaustion. I’m so looking forward to a good night sleep with fresh clean sheets on the bed.

Laurie - I hope you and especially your son’s family in Newfoundland is safe. Such an awful storm and so unexpected that far north!
  • There will be pictures, never fear. (grin)

Well, Yooly, I understand necessity, I'm just sorry it broke NOW. At least they will have you comfortable again tonight.

I am anticipating no power sometime in the next week with the hurricane approaching our coast….it did make a slight turn west today which is good for us!

Thank you, Yooly. They only experienced a bit of wind - fortunately they are on the east/ocean side of the island and the storm came up between the island and the mainland. Looking at pictures yesterday was pretty shocking. Two main areas hit are where I'll be in a month - Sidney where the ferry leaves the mainland and Port Aux Basques where it lands on the island. It will be strange arriving sort of on the tail of such a storm.

Can't wait for those pictures, Alexandra!

Hope your power stays on, Connie. It looks like this particular storm gave America a wide berth?

Ah - I forgot to write this :)

I'm driving to Newfoundland with my pup at the end of October. Borrowing younger son's truck (he can't come because of work) and delivering the remainder of older son and family's belongings. I've come close - but never took the ferry over to Newfoundland. I'm looking forward to seeing the land there so much (not to mention the people and THE BOY). Rocks and water. My favourite landscape. I just booked the ferry tickets before the storm came raging through...hope it wasn't a sign of what the weather will be when I drive there :p

I'll post some rock and water pictures - PAV and I can show you the two coasts of Canada!

Sorry for the radio silence folks...my sister is taking up a huge amount of my time and emotional energy (her six month course of aggressive chemo started on Friday and yesterday my 83 y/o MIL (who has leukaemia and is asthmatic) tested positive for covid...so I'm a tad busy and distracted at present. Keep sticking with it, everyone!

    Woot woot congrats Alexandra!

Sorry you had to shell out so many $$$ to achieve bearable living Yooly. What a bummer.

Here it’s properly autumnal. I’ve finished my husband’s FairIsle sweater (see pics) and now I’ve started on a thick blanket...

    Oh, Bella - it's beautiful!

But I'm more struck - blown over by your plaid sofa!!!!!! I'm a bit nuts for this particular plaid (Blackwatch I think?) - I've gone so far as to paint my frontdoor plaid :p
If you weren't so far away I'd be trying my darndest to wrangle that from you somehow. <3

Now to serious stuff. What a spot you are in, Bella. Covid is scary from someone in her condition. And can't imagine with your sister.
REALLY HOPE YOU ARE FINDING AWAY TO REDUCE SOME OF THIS STRESS ON YOU!
I know you can't reduce what is coming in right now - but please take some time everyday to soothe yourself in whatever way will work well (other, of course, then sweets!)

Yikes.... so many things going on!

Congratulations Alexandra: what wonderful news! Looking forward to the pictures.

Yooly... that's like NOT fair! Glad you survived the experience but ouch on the price tag. Let's hope this system keeps on ticking!

Laurie: this is amazing that you're going on a trip... but the timing... I am not so sure about the timing! Looking forward to the pictures as I've never been towards your neck of the woods! I think you're just trying to run away from Sky! You should visit with her if you can!

Connie I truly hope things go well for you guys. The storms are getting scary.

Bella: the sweater truly is wonderful. Now if you tell us your collected the wool off the monster sheep that roam the British fields I might even get jelly! But please add yourself in the list of people whose needs you have to take care off. I understand that people may wonder or not understand why you're spending time on yourself while all these other needs are there. But you HAVE to take care of yourself FIRST. So make sure to include *you* time in there.

Maybe a good reason to visit Turkey Point! - a trip down Highway 6 before the land of rock and sea :)
