We’re planning to stop in SC on the way home to visit my brother and sister. I haven’t seen them in a year. We usually visit twice a year coming and going home from FL. They’re all fully vaccinated and I get my second shot next week.

    YEAH!!!

We really need a word for the day that's 2 weeks after the second shot.

    How about “Liberation Day”!

    Ooh, I like it!!!!!

Well I successfully changed my profile picture. It shows everywhere except this thread. I may just have brown hair forever in this thread. I'll give it another look some other day. LOL!

I asked Publix pharmacy if they had any leftover doses. I’m staying with my sister a few days as she’s recovering from cancer surgery. We live about 100 miles from her but we had to schedule our shots here as getting an appointment locally was impossible. I have to drive back here Tuesday for my shot so it would have been convenient if I could have gotten it this week. I’ll do whatever I need to for the shots so I’ll manage the driving.

Helene, keep checking with Publix and any other drug stores in the areas that are giving the shots. Late afternoon is a good time to check with them, as by then they may have some no-shows for scheduled appointments and have left over vaccines to dispense.

I think I told y’all about my niece passing out after getting her first shot and causing quite the reaction from the medical staff at the site. Well, her 20 year old daughter got her shot yesterday and passed out twice! The paramedics gave her pickle juice to drink after the second time and she did okay after that. I guess pickle juice restores electrolytes, maybe? Fortunately for her, she got the Johnson & Johnson dose, so she won’t have to go back for a second shot. My sister said “I don’t know what is wrong with my family!”

The first time I fainted during a vaccination was second grade. The whole school got an extra recess. I have always stoutly maintained that was positive reinforcement.

My entire life I have had to ask to lie down before anything involving a needle. It ruled out getting vaccinations where you stood in line, e.g. Also ruled out having blood drawn at certain labs. It got to be so routine I'd joke about it. I had more than one doctor over the years tell me no need to apologize because it's an autonomic response.

For some reason in the last year or so that suddenly disappeared. Tell your sister that there may be hope in her future. She's lucky she got the J&J if she has that condition.

P.S. no one ever gave me pickle juice or did anything other than let me lie there until I felt able to get up, which takes next to no time at all.

Maryanne, I still see your old profile picture.

I just got home from getting a haircut. I wanted to go shorter and asked for the length to be just brushing my shoulders. I even pointed to exactly where on my neck I wanted it to be cut to. The result? About 2” shorter than I requested. It never fails. No matter how explicit I am in my instructions, they always cut more than I want. I like the result, but it is definitely shorter than I wanted. At least my hair grows fairly quickly.

Yep, now my old profile picture is back. Weird. Not worth spending any more time on I don't think.

Your profile picture is still a gray silhouette on my feed. Was it hard to get used to gray hair? It’s probably a relief not to have to color it every month.

Surprisingly, no. I thought it would be.

Today started off rainy but then became nice and sunny! I did miscellaneous chores and a couple hours of work. A very uneventful day!

    Funny but true:

Everybody can’t wait to return to normal. Except for half the population dreading the return to normal.

During a sad, tragic year, it was introverts who found a silver lining. There was more time alone, more peace and less of the personal and professional pressures they find so draining. The calendar was suddenly, blissfully empty. Life slowed down.

Heading back to Okeechobee today. DH has to finish up the project he’s doing for my sister and BIL. And my second shot is over there tomorrow. We came back Saturday for a couple of days. We have to pick up some prescriptions that we ran low on. It was nice to sleep in my own bed for a couple of nights.

Helene - here's hoping the second shot goes smoothly!

Startling fact from an article about cicadas:

By midcentury, the climate of Connecticut is predicted to be similar to that of North Carolina now.

I would have welcomed that when I lived in CT. It was usually May before it felt like spring weather.

I had a quiet day today, just working at my desk!

So far,I just have a small bump where I got my shot. It’s a little tender if I touch it but otherwise I feel good. Couldn’t ask for better luck than that.

After feeding the colonies this morning I swung by a grocery store. The section for bagged lettuce was completely empty! The canned cat food shelves were sparse.. I didn't go down the paper goods aisle but it looked pretty full.

Helene, that’s great that all you got was a slightly sore arm! Hopefully it will stay that way.

We are leaving tomorrow to go down to Houston for 5 days. It’s our first visit since Christmas 2019. There will be a birthday party for the 3 year old, but other than that no planned activities that I know of. We will come back Tuesday afternoon.

Surprisingly, the bump disappeared over the course of the day. The spot was a little tender if I touched it. I had a dull headache and for some reason I was ravenously hungry at dinner time. I didn’t see that as a side effect but it certainly wasn’t normal for me. It could have been connected to the headache. I ate dinner, took Tylenol and went to bed early. I feel pretty good today. If that’s as bad as it gets, I count myself lucky. Maryanne, I can see the new profile picture now. Pam, have a good time on your trip. I’m looking forward to visiting family when we drive home in May. I haven’t seen them in 18 months. At our ages, 69-75, we’re getting up there.

Pam - have a great trip!

Helene - yes, we're all getting up there. My mother's last living sister just died. If my mom was alive she'd be 96 and this was an older sister so this was one long lived lady! It pleased me to be able to stop at the store and get sympathy cards.

The forecast today was rain. Instead it's a gorgeous sunny day.

I saw the hand doctor this morning. 8:30 am appointment because "he doesn't like holes in his schedule". I guess that translates to "if you want a normal appointment time you have to be lucky enough to happen to call when the earlier appointments are booked". Then they annoyed me when I got there by having me fill out all over again all the information I filled out online. Then they annoyed me by insisting on an xray of my hand before he even saw me! And he further annoyed me by referring to me as "Miss Maryanne". Yep, I'm a grouch with doctors. I mean I have to cater to clients. When I'm the clients why doesn't anyone have to cater to me?

Anyway the lumps in my palm are either cysts or dupuytren contracture (which of course I already knew, thanks google). Neither requires anything unless they hurt or my fingers start to curve (that was what I needed to know.

This is the guy who operated on my wrist after I broke it. I think he's excellent just tres annoying.

“You see films kind of reflect that too — the guy’s the action hero,” Carpiano said. “There’s always this kind of conception, a certain sort of toughness, avoiding things that permeate that. We see that manifest itself in healthcare-seeking behaviors as well.”
Indeed, throughout the pandemic, multiple surveys have found that women take more precautions to stave off coronavirus infections, somewhat ironic given that men have a higher chance of dying from the virus if they contract it. A Gallup poll last year found that women were more likely than men to wear masks, social distance and avoid large crowds.
Perhaps that same tendency toward caution extends to the COVID-19 vaccine. A viral tweet from a reporter in North Carolina showed that many vaccinated people listed the same reason for getting their shots: Their wives made them.

At least the men were smart enough to listen to their wives. When I’m on Sanibel, I often see a commercial about treatment for Dupentrans contraction. Next time I see it, I notice if they have a website. It’s non- surgical. I’m still in Okeechobee and their TV stations are all east coast stations.

I took Lola to the vet today and they want to do a test that involves fasting so they're keeping her overnight. Constant stream of new doctors there so I got to explain yet again all of Lola's idiosyncrasies. E.g. unlike most cats she doesn't jump. At all. Not even onto a chair.
