2021: Think Positively for a Better Year!

Ha' Twas the month after Christmas, and all through the house Nothing would fit me, not even a blouse.

The cookies I'd nibbled, the eggnog I'd taste At the holiday parties had gone to my waist.

When I got on the scales there arose such a number!
When I walked to the store (less a walk than a lumber).

I'd remember the marvelous meals I'd prepared; The gravies and sauces and beef nicely rared,

The wine and the rum balls, the bread and the cheese And the way I'd never said, 'No thank you, please.'

As I dressed myself in my husband's old shirt And prepared once again to do battle with dirt - I said to myself, as I only can 'You can't spend a winter disguised as a man!'

So - away with the last of the sour cream dip, Get rid of the fruit cake, every cracker and chip

Every last bit of food that I like must be banished 'Till all the additional ounces have vanished.

I won't have a cookie - not even a lick.
I'll want only to chew on a long celery stick.

I won't have hot biscuits, or corn bread, or pie, I'll munch on a carrot and quietly cry.

I'm hungry, I'm lonesome, and life is a bore But isn't that what January is for?

Unable to giggle, no longer a riot.
Happy New Year to all and to all a good diet!

I thought with all the doom and gloom of 2020 that I would kick this year off with a little humor that is a good take on how we approach the New Year, year after year.

On a positive note, I was "stimulated" overnight and had almost 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep. I didn't stay up to watch the new year in.

    Jean - that's hilarious - thank you!

I didn't stay up to watch the New Year's in either. The fireworks (or gun shots, we never know) started early and just kept on going but I still fell asleep.

I ordered a box from diet direct and a small box from nutrisystem and starting Monday I'm going to eat mostly out of those boxes for two weeks (of course adding vegetables and having two "regular" meals a week with DH at dinnertime on the weekends). The "box diet" I shall call it. LOL! Time to break back out the spreadsheets, too!

    I enjoyed that poem, Jean!

I was up past midnight but I was in bed reading. I knew from experience that there was no point in trying to sleep because every year one of my neighbors insists on setting off fireworks at midnight on New Year’s Eve. And he did not break that streak this year.

I’m not making any great plans for the next year. I will continue trying to cut down on my carbs and try to work more exercise into my life. If I am successful at those 2 goals, I may try to add others.

Although I am on a list for the vaccine, I have no idea when I’ll get it. The process seems to be rather chaotic, with lots of conflicting information being given. Some of our hospital systems are saying that they have vaccinated all of their willing healthcare workers and are now offering their excess doses to the eligible public, while other hospitals say they have not yet received any vaccine for their staff. People are reporting that they received an appointment but when they arrive at the appointed time and location they find a long line and after waiting 90 minutes in the cold and rain, were told that there was no more vaccine available that day. So I’m not holding my breath for a quick or smooth process to get my vaccine. If I have to wait awhile longer while they work out a better system, I’m OK with that since I don’t have to leave my house that often anyway. There’s nowhere I have to go and nothing I have to do that changes my risk of getting the virus significantly over what it was a month ago before the vaccine was available.

I didn’t stay up for midnight either. It was very quiet here. I didn’t hear a single firework. MA is pretty strict about gun ownership so I’ve never heard gunshots as part of a New Year’s celebration. While scanning my news feed, I came across a report about the packed beach in Ft Myers Beach. The drone shots of the beach shows how little people have learned from the last 9 months. Business owners were thrilled people were coming into their restaurants. I can guarantee this wasn’t happening on Sanibel. We have a toll road on to the island. When I was last there, the beach parking lots were closed and on street parking isn’t allowed. Prominent signs warned drivers they would be towed and steeply fined if they parked on the streets. That leaves the beaches for locals who live close enough to walk or bike. Mask wearing was practiced by most people. If it ever feels safe enough to drive down, I’d feel pretty safe there. We called to reschedule a couple of January medical appointments. We hope to be down there by mid-February. The governor’s policy is to vaccinate all the elderly people first. It’s led to chaos and long lines of old people camping out overnight in lawn chairs. You could call him Trump Jr. I hope they come up with a better system. His gotten terrible news coverage of this fiasco. I’ll have to give my resolutions more thought before I make any. I’m sure glad to see 2020 in the rear view mirror.

Our Christmas cookies finally arrived. It only took 21 days from NJ to MA. They were well packed in individual ziplock containers. We sampled two varieties and they weren’t stale. We had given up hopes of seeing them so it was a nice surprise.

I see Nutrisystem has gone to a plan if you pay for either two or three months in advance then the equivalent monthly price is lower than choosing to pay monthly. Also, if you choose to pay for two or three months in advance, the shipments afterward will be higher priced but lower than if you paid monthly.

I’ve seen their new ads and find them confusing as to what you’re getting. The one I see most says 50% off but I think that’s just for one month. And it’s probably a set menu rather than selecting the items you actually like. I’ve been gone so long they probably have discontinued all the items I liked.

NS has put new photos of their food on the site I guess as a nod to marketing.

The selection has gotten slim at least for shelf stable and I don't have enough freezer space right now to try a frozen order.

JC's not a whole lot better. A lot of the JC foods I enjoyed are gone.

I find myself using more packets and supermarket frozen foods.

I'm bound and determined to get back on track this week and therefore am in the process of ferreting out and using up things that don't "fit" but are tempting. Like last evening I made spaghetti.

I know when we finally get to the point of using up stockpiles I'm going to be shocked what all I find but right now "out of sight; out of mind" isn't a bad thing.

I just got a package that was sent in late November from Wisconsin and had been sitting in Wisconsin untouched since December 2. You have to wonder. Did someone get to the bottom of a pile? Find something in a corner?

I would love to use more supermarket foods but the local supermarket doesn't carry much of a variety. They had Lean Cuisine meatloaf, Canneloni (sp), and spaghetti. I am not too sure of where we are heading with the weather, the virus, etc. and the ability to get to the city for a prepaid grocery pickup if the weather turns bad.

I decided to bite on the NS offer as I didn't have a problem with the foods (except meatloaf), the various deals require you to click on the appropriate link. I got two months worth of food which should carry me through the worst of winter. I will fill in with the great selection of Lean Cuisine at the Walmart grocery pickup.

Someone should compile a list of the state officials who quietly stood up to the craziness and did their jobs and give them some recognition. Without them, we might be on our way to a dictatorship.

I logged my food today but it is a boring process. I also exercised a half hour.

I’ve been logging my food and water on the Fitbit app. It’s easy to use, takes only a few minutes and is less boring than other sites I’ve used.

I'd never stick with it. I always go back to my spreadsheets. Quick and easy.

BTW West VA is getting a lot of kudos for having their act together with respect to the vaccination program.

Diet Direct is having a flash sale--up to 45% off. I haven't ordered anything from them for a long time. I still have its pancake mix.

Maryanne, your spreadsheets are your form of logging. It’s not how you track things that matters, it’s that you do what works for you. Spreadsheets keep you accountable to yourself so do what works for you. I’ve got the Covid 9 pound weight gain since I left FL. The weather here doesn’t motivate me to go outside like FL does. I find myself slipping into boredom snacking at night out to boredom. That has to stop. I’m going back to daily weigh ins. I got very erratic about doing that. If I can’t see the upward trend, I can’t get ahead of it. So I guess you can say my resolution is to go back to the behavior that worked for me in the past.

If you love satire, you need to watch "Death to 2020" on Netflix. It incorporates real footage with comments made by various people. Let's just say this would not make the regular news.

I'm not doing the daily weigh ins but I am going back to what worked for me using a variety of vendors. I am playing with the IF approach of 12/8 in which I confine all eating to 8 hours starting with lunch. This is day 2 of it and I am finding so far I haven't missed breakfast.

I may be getting the vaccine Thurs or Fri as a substitute teacher but #'s of doses are not guaranteed.

I’m going to continue with trying to cut down on carbs and incorporating more movement into my day. I’ve become a real couch potato (or more accurately, easy chair potato) during the pandemic, so I need to change that. I already weigh daily and do try to make adjustments according to the trend I see on the scale.

NS lost me as a customer when they started advertising their 28 day program but in actuality it is only 21 days of food. I also don’t enjoy meal replacement shakes and they seem to be pushing those pretty strongly without offering alternatives if you want to opt out. So you pay for them, whether or not you choose to use them. At least, that was the way it worked the last time I was on NS.

What I like about my spreadsheets is I'm not starting from scratch every day.

Evenings are rough. Because of DH's work schedule we got in the habit of eating (very) early which gives me a LONG evening. I've got to get back in the habit of using raw veggies to fill some of that evening!

Pam--The shakes on NS are available as an additional purchase. I got the 4 week plan which is weekends off plus I could choose my selections. There is a plan that provides food for 7 days a week for 4 weeks but the 4 weeks with weekends off is the most popular one...and it is available with shelf stable only or combination of shelf and frozen.

The last time I was on NS was around 3 or 4 years ago. At that time, the shakes were automatically included as part of the plan, and the 28 day program I signed up for was actually 21 days. Their rationale for that was that they expected people to eat out or cook for themselves at least 7 days out of every 28 days, but that wasn’t made clear in the advertising. They very much emphasized that it was a 28 day plan, which to me meant 28 days of food, not 21. I felt that it was very misleading.

Pam--Things do change. I do remember the plan you described. That was about the time they started selling the "weekends off" plan after its success on QVC. I guess to them, they thought the 28 day plan included the plans for eating on the days the NS food wasn't eaten as they included a good plan for eating home cooked or when eating out. It is very clear now.

Maryanne--Great photos!! Love the fitness equipment one.

I have been browsing the NS website. It is more informative than it once was. Its approach to handling the first week is a little different.

Great line from a Post op-ed:

You probably know all the details by now: Raffensperger, a Republican, recorded the call after having reportedly dodged 18 previous attempts by Trump to reach him. Post reporter Amy Gardner obtained the recording. Legendary news anchor Dan Rather, who covered Watergate, summed up the contents perfectly on Twitter: "The audio of Trump with the Georgia secretary of state. Wow. It's like telling the Nixon tapes to 'hold my beer.' "

Good thing he had the foresight to tape the call. Kudos to him for standing up to that bully and doing the right thing. I don’t get why Trump is so fixated on Georgia. Even if he’d won it, he didn’t have enough electoral votes to take the election. It makes no sense at all.
