Nobody outside health care/nursing home is anywhere near a vaccination here.

I heard this song for the first time the other day. "There's a last time for everything" hit me not just as a song title but as a huge truth:

I’m not a big pie fan either. Give me cake or cookies before pie. I occasionally have a piece but pie is easy for me to say no too. Have you seen stories about the woman who makes elaborate pie tops and photographs them them. She photographs them before backing. Her name is Lauren Ko and they are truly works of art. Google her for a look at them.

Helene, I have seen a lot of her designs, and others who make pie art. I will be experimenting and trying to create something similar, though not as intricate as hers. I’ve read that she spends hours on her creations but I’m not quite that patient. I often see the before and after photos, and I always think the before baking photos are prettier.

I saw her on TV and she said the same thing. So she photo graphs before baking.

Maryland vaccinations. Our governor thinks Maryland will get to our group (65-74) by late March. I'm sure that's being optimistic.

Trump Taunted For Plan To Skip Inauguration: ‘I Really Don’t Care, Do U?’

The news wasn’t exactly a surprise, but Twitter users appreciated the opportunity for snark.

I saw her pie art on an episode of Sunday Morning on CBS. She makes elaborate geometric designs on her pies. They really are works of art.

Maryanne, that CNN opinion piece really puts a scary perspective on the events of the last week, and the 4 years that preceded it. I hope this was the wake up call that was needed to make people see him for what he was and examine how their support enabled him. Sadly, I fear most will not be willing to look that deeply at it.

I grew up in PA Dutch country, aka folks with German ancestors. We were proud of our German ancestry (although DNA wise I'm more English/Irish). As a result, I've spent a lot of time in my life thinking and reading about Hitler's rise to power, wondering what happened, wondering whether I'd have had the strength to join the resistance. The last 4 years has brought all that to the surface in my brain and this week? Well, this week!

Reading that millions of people think of him as god (or even GOD) just makes my head spin. How can millions of people be so delusional?

It seems to be white supremacy mixed with gun mania. The supremacy thing would be hilarious if it wasn't so terrifying. I mean - just LOOK at that crowd. Or is that the problem? They don't have the brains and the drive to be successful so they need someone to blame it on?

I guess there's a subset like my BIL who just don't want rules and can't accept society needs rules. (He's also got a problem apparently with paying into social security and medicare although he has a very sick wife and they bought coverage on the (Obamacare) exchange. Hypocritical much?)

I actually read a Times or Post op ed piece that says people like me have TDS - trump derangement syndrome. Because we don't give him credit for all the lasting good he's done. SAY WHAT? Name one! Not just "name one that tops all the horrific things he's done". Which is clearly impossible. But just name one!

Maryanne, I share your disbelief and confusion about how anyone can believe that he’s done any good for our country. My DH and BIL, as well as a few other family members were firmly on the tRump bandwagon and considered him to be a great man. DH on Wednesday FINALLY said “I’m done with him.” I almost stood up and cheered, but how sad that it took an attempted coup to make him see what a pathetic demigod he’s been supporting for these past 4 years. My BIL is still supporting the orange one and I’m not sure my sister’s marriage will survive this as they are currently not speaking to each other over their opposing stances on the matter. He has for the past 4 years frequently advised me and others to “find our safe place and take our TDS meds” whenever we have commented on tRump. I find that incredibly demeaning and hateful. One of his daughters finally called him out on him posting such comments on his wife’s and my Facebook pages and he stopped. We no longer post on each other’s comments to maintain a truce. He continues to post such comments on other’s pages, usually strangers. I admit to taking pleasure in seeing other’s responses to his comments who are not constrained by trying to preserve family harmony.

I missed the CNN piece. Trump clearly thought there was no bad action he could take that would change the minds of his supporters. People like Pam’s husband are starting to see the megalomaniac we’ve seen for the last five years. Trump said he could fire a gun down 5th Avenue and nothing would be done to him. He’s just done the equivalent of that on an international stage. And guess what, he was wrong. It was possible to do something so egregious that even some of his supporters are saying enough is enough. Our allies are calling him out too. He was so convinced the right wing media was his friend so he could be recorded inciting a riot. He will still have the militias, white supremacy groups and people like Cruz and Hawley supporting him. But many of his MAGA people will start to see him for what he is. Let’s hope they join us to stop the insanity and start working together.

    From Baltimore Sun:

But in West Virginia, which opted out of the federal contract with CVS and Walgreens to handle nursing homes, vaccinations have been completed.

Tinglong Dai, an associate professor of operations management and business analytics in the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, said the pharmacy-led program has “turned out to be unacceptably inefficient.” West Virginia, he said, relied on a network of local pharmacies that outperformed.

I take it my BIL's wife is okay with the cheeto but I don't know that directly. I'm not sure I've ever spoken to her other than maybe to say "congrats" at their wedding (20 or so years ago).

The two times I have even laid eyes on any of DH's sibs in the last couple decades were at the funerals for his mom and dad. It's not like we all ever get together.

O.K., I don't know where this person got his information but in WV the National Guard has been in charge of first testing nursing home residents and then vaccinating them. They took the needed doses to the residents and ensured the vaccinations took place. They may have used some local pharmacies in some places but that was rare.

The National Guard had a plan for all of this ready to go when the vaccines became available. Each broadcast of the Gov's message had the National Guard General in charge of all this giving updates. The news had coverage of the Guard's delivery of the vaccine. I know the regional health departments were in charge of having the vaccinations for those not in nursing homes. My vaccination was not given by a pharmacy; it was given by our local hospital at the school after the vaccine was delivered to them.

The state devised a program to vaccinate individuals based upon likelihood of getting covid. The nursing homes and prisons were targeted because of the age of those in the nursing homes, as well as the closeness of residents and also prisoners.

With the general populations, the age group of 80 and above is currently being vaccinated. When complete, the age group of 70 and above will be vaccinated unless modified. Right now, since in-school instruction is to begin in two weeks, school employees 50 and above are being vaccinated. I got mine because I work in schools. Employees indicated their interest in being vaccinated, and vaccines for that number was made available.

In addition to first vaccinations, enough vaccine must be made available for the second dose of which the nursing homes, etc. have received and front line responders in the process of getting it. I will get my second one on February 5. We are given a nice vaccination card for record.

Jean, I wish my state was even half as organized as yours in distributing the vaccine. I still have not been given an appointment date, despite having registered 2 weeks ago. It seems to be very random as people who registered after I did have gotten theirs. And now our governor is authorizing the people administering the vaccines to use the supply that was being held back for second doses to continue administering first doses. I have heard that wait times are getting shorter for the lucky ones who have appointments, but other than that, it’s a big mess. I’m concerned now that if I do get my first shot,I won’t be able to get my second dose on time.

Pam--I haven't dealt with this but it seems simple that if there are 100 doses to be available then after the first 100 make their appointments then the rest are put on the list for the next session. The appointment should be made at time of registration unless the registration is a method to tell the supplier how many doses would be needed. Obviously if I have an appointment for Feb 5 then they know how many second doses will be needed after that day of first vaccination.

I saw on the news today that they feel there is some flexibility in getting the second dose. They mentioned five weeks as an example. They are starting to think that more people having some immunity rather than sticking to the original schedule is better all around. The manufacturers will continue to make vaccines so it’s not like these first batches are it. Plus other vaccines are expected to come on the market soon. I was about a month late getting my Shingrex second shot because it was impossible to find anyone having it. I asked the pharmacist about the time delay as he gave me the shot and he said I would be okay immunity wise.

Trivia time: I lost 4.2 lbs last week. We all know that is mostly water but it is a weight loss. The scale doesn't know the difference.
