Trump Ignites a War Within the Church

After a week of Trumpist mayhem, white evangelicals wrestle with what they’ve become.

    ...

The split we are seeing is not theological or philosophical. It’s a division between those who have become detached from reality and those who, however right wing, are still in the real world.

Hence, it’s not an argument. You can’t argue with people who have their own separate made-up set of facts. You can’t have an argument with people who are deranged by the euphoric rage of what Erich Fromm called group narcissism — the thoughtless roar of those who believe their superior group is being polluted by alien groups.

It’s a pure power struggle. The weapons in this struggle are intimidation, verbal assault, death threats and violence, real and rhetorical. The fantasyland mobbists have an advantage because they relish using these weapons, while their fellow Christians just want to lead their lives.

No idea. I'm not a facebook person.

Okay, I couldn't resist, I found the website. But for our group it just says the site will be updated when we're available. There's a place to search for a clinic but then you're on your own.

Supposedly our group will start Jan 25 which is the height of unrealistic looking at MD stats.

Factoring variety will keep your plan more interesting and easier to stick with it. We leave for FL in a week. I’m busy getting packed and organizing things here. Realistically, I don’t see me making a lot of weight loss progress until I get to FL.

    MD

The state will open up the eligibility further one week later, on Jan. 25, to Phase 1C: Residents age 65 to 74, more public safety and health workers, and essential workers in grocery stores, food production, labs, manufacturing, public transit and the postal service.

When you get settled in Florida sounds like a better time to re-commit.

Christian textbooks used in thousands of schools around the country teach that President Barack Obama helped spur destructive Black Lives Matter protests, that the Democrats’ choice of 2016 nominee Hillary Clinton reflected their focus on identity politics, and that President Donald Trump is the “fighter” Republicans want, a HuffPost analysis has found.

Summary of the cheeto's contempt - and this doesn't even include the environment and healthcare -

This contempt — and make no mistake, that’s what it is — transferred over to policy. Families were separated at the border. Numerous attempts were made to weaken the government safety net. Student loan lenders were favored over borrowers. The workplace was treated no differently. During Trump’s time in office, the Labor Department weakened or fully did away with protections in areas ranging from hourly pay to worker safety, cutting back on inspections of workplaces by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. Heck, OSHA removed the names of workers who died in workplace accidents from its homepage.

DH and I just received notification of appointments for our vaccines. We are getting them tomorrow afternoon. I had begun to think our registrations had been deleted from the system because several people I know had already received theirs even though they registered after we did.

I was at UPS today and a man was giving an employee a hard time about not being able to get something notarized. He asked how he could make an appointment and the employee didn’t know. I was about to tell him most banks notarize and he could call one for an appointment. I have this tendency to try to help people. He got very hostile with the clerk and accused him of being rude. The clerk wasn’t rude. He started yelling he was a taxpayer and entitled to what he wanted. The clerk said he didn’t pay taxes to UPS. He asked the guy to leave and the guy said this wasn’t the end and violence was coming or something like that. The clerk got the license plate number. I told him he should call the police since the man threatened him. The guy sounded like one of the crazies who invaded the Capitol. I was glad I didn’t speak to him.

Helene, it’s probably good that you didn’t attempt to help the guy out as it would likely only made you a target for his anger as well. It’s truly scary how many people are escalating and threatening violence. It’s making me fearful of interacting with people I don’t know — and some that I do know.

I weigh in tomorrow. I went to the city yesterday for my Walmart grocery pick up and filled up with gas while in the city as it is 20 cents a gallon cheaper than here.

I hope there is a vaccine supply so I can get my second shot. The news about availability to the states for that purpose is dismal right now.

I was just reading online that SW FL is calling people to give them appointment times for shot 2. T said the company would make 3 attempts to call a person. If they don’t answer, they get dropped. All second shots in Lee County are taking place in one separate location than where the first shots happen. It sounds like they are giving the Moderna vaccine in that area. People interviewed for the story said they would hang out with their phone so they don’t miss the call. Jean, your state may have news on their website about how and when they’ll administer shot 2.

Helene--We are overwhelmed with info on when shots are being given. All went in 40 minutes when people called in, but if they decide to use the reserve for the second shots to give first shots, I'll not be happy. I already have the time reserved for the second shot on February 5th but that won't mean anything if the Feds want to give it to someone else to get everyone covered before second shots are administered.

Don't worry! If you haven't heard, our state is #1 in the nation in getting the info out and shots administered. Has been featured on many news sites. My appointment card has the date, type of vaccine and location.

One of the two places that is supposed to be doing clinics near us is on my colony feeding route. It would be perfect. It's a huge always empty parking lot next to a medical complex where they could easily throw up an open tent. Outside is safer right. Our next phase starts Monday and there's not one tiny little hint of a clinic set up. Are they planning to do it in the medical offices? Along with every other patient coming in to the medical office? What this whole effort needs is some brains.

Maryanne--Here they would have put on Facebook, the State website, TV, etc. where it would be held, the qualifications, and number to call to register. Your next phase may start Monday but they may not have the vaccine for it.

We are going this afternoon for our first shot. I’m told that I will receive a card with a time and date for the second shot in 4 weeks, but as Jean said, that is meaningless if there is no vaccine available at the time. I guess it will depend on how fast they can ramp up production of the vaccines and get them out to the places that are administering them. Our county has also been featured for how well it is doing in administering the vaccine and several other counties in the state are adopting the model we are using. The first few days were a bit chaotic, but it seems to be running much more smoothly now with much shorter wait times. From what I’ve read, even after getting the second shot, we will still need to continue precautions, social distancing, etc. until about 80% or more of the population is vaccinated. I’m wondering if we will ever achieve that, given that a lot of people are saying they will not take it.

Pam--I have heard that the masks, etc. will be required until herd immunity is achieved or that percentage of people receive both shots. There are many who are afraid of it as well as those who still think this is a hoax despite the numbers of people dying.

To be honest, I think DH and I are sort of putting vaccination on the back burner until all this shakes out a little. We don't want to have to wait in long lines or have to worry about second shots. Both sound iffy.

We got our shots. The line was long and we inched along for about an hour and a half. The bottleneck was caused by a shortage of people manning the computers where they verified our information and took copies of our ID’s and insurance cards. After that it was straight to a paramedic who administered the shot, then sitting in a chair for 15 minutes to ensure that neither of us had a reaction. Overall, it took just over 2 hours today. The time seems to vary a lot. I’ve had friends who went to the same site who have reported completing the entire process in 20 minutes, while others have been somewhere in between. Luckily, it wasn’t too cold today and the majority of the wait time was in a covered parking garage or indoors. So far neither of us is experiencing any reaction to the shot, but I’m expecting my arm to be sore tomorrow.
