We finally booked our trip south. We’re leaving MA on the 21st. We’ll stay in a NJ hotel that night and drive to VA the next day. We’re taking the auto train this time. We have a compartment so we can stay away from other travelers. It also cuts 1000 miles of driving. I won’t be able to visit my SC family this trip but maybe I can on the return trip in May or June. We took the Auto Train many times up until my family moved to SC. When I was working, it saved several vacation days by cutting travel from 4 days to 2.

Helene--That is terrific planning and will be less tiring as you won't be driving.

For instant pot lovers (I got one for Christmas but have yet to use it), this might be of interest:

Helene, that sounds like a great way to travel south this time. I’m sure you will really enjoy your time in Florida.

We just got home from a nice socially distanced back yard happy hour with friends. We met early so we could enjoy the warmer temps and left when the sun went down as it was starting to get a little chilly. We are fortunate here in Texas to get days in the mid 60’s and warmer, even in the winter. It was so nice to see our friends. We all shared what we knew about vaccine availability, but so far none of us have been able to get it. One friend was unable to attend because he was recently exposed to the virus, so he was quarantining. This was the first time we had been together since before Christmas.

Pam--It is good that you were able to get together with your friends. Our state developed guidelines for distribution of the vaccine upon hearing it was about to be approved. So far, all nursing home residents have been vaccinated, and front line workers are in the process, as well as those over 80. After one site had people line up at 2am only to find there were not enough doses. Identification is being required to verify age. Supposedly, teachers over 50 are being next in line as the Gov wants schools open by Jan. 19.

I guess our state is #1 or 2 in the nation in a good vaccination roll out plan, according to the Gov's talk at noon. After the 80 and above age group is vaccinated, then it will open to the 70 and above. Our state is now in the process of giving the second dose of the Pfiser vaccine to those who took it 3 weeks ago.

Jean - love it! Tuffy sleeps with me but luckily not ON me since he weighs over 20 pounds.

Speaking of weight, I have all the tempting stuff out of the cupboards and frig, weighed myself this morning and am having a good "packet day". I put on WAY too much weight since my last cardiologist weigh-in. She made the mistake of telling me I didn't need to come back for a year and apparently I'm not adult enough to not take that as permission to binge.

Sounds like your state is doing great! It's not at all clear what's going on here but then again I confess I haven't tuned in to details. I do know the governor has told health care facilities that if their doses don't get used, their allotment will be reduced next round.

Helene - you said that in "your" part of Florida you feel somewhat safer than the news reports would have one believe?

It certainly is a sad day for our country.

We’re on an island with a much smaller population than the surrounding areas. People are better about wearing masks on the island as well. Most of what we need is available without leaving the island. That’s why I say I feel safe going there. We’re staying in a hotel in NJ rather than asking BIL about staying with them. They’ve been very careful about staying home so I don’t want ask them to change that on our account. We stayed in the same hotel chain when we drove north. They had good protocols in place so I expect the same at the NJ hotel. We’ll gas up before we start the trip and will probably need to refuel once on the way to VA. Once on the train, we’ll stay in our compartment, separate from other passengers. Once we leave the train, it’s a half day’s drive to our house.

In an emotional victory speech, Warnock noted he had received a vote from his mother. “The 82-year-old hands that used to pick somebody else’s cotton went to the polls and picked her youngest son to be a United States senator,” he said.

The cheeto tweeted for them to "stay peaceful" or something along those lines. I want to see him in jail!

Jean, I agree. I never thought in my lifetime I would see anything like this.

I would love to see the 25th Amendment invoked and tRump led out of there in a straight jacke, but I don’t think Pence has the b**ls to do it.

I read some reports a while back speculating that Trump would resign with a few weeks left so Pence could be president and pardon Trump. After hearing reports about the terrible things Trump said about Pence today, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for a pardon if I were Trump. What goes around comes around.

They don't even have the guts to corner him and demand he resign (like what happened with Nixon).

    Chris Cillizza

    @CillizzaCNN
    This was a political stunt.

Except that the thousands of Donald Trump backers who, at the urging of the President took their unhappiness into the Capitol itself, didn't know that

A lot of questions being asked tonight about (1) why the police weren't prepared/organized since everyone knew what was coming and (2) why there weren't mass arrests (why were they just allowed to leave?).

Great line in a Washington Post article:

The rioters want to wallow in the Confederacy. They want to be reborn under the flag of Trump. They want to live in an angry, polluted, heartless world, if only because it means that they get to stand victorious atop the whole, miserable mess.

There is a large segment of our country that has gone completely insane, led by a lunatic. Thank God he will be gone in 13 more days.

It can go by fast enough for me. Who knows what damage he can inflict in 13 days. I’d like to see him permanently banned from social media. It’s too easy for him to spread lies and to incite violence on social media.

He has been banned from Facebook and instagram until after the inauguration. Not sure how long he’s in twitter jail, but for now he can’t tweet, either.

Losing those platforms must be killing him. I’m hoping the FBI identifies a lot of the rioters who made it into the Capitol and arrests them. The world needs to see people being held accountable for their actions.

I know the one who sat in Nancy Pelosi’s chair with his boot on her desk has been identified. Apparently he also stole mail from her desk, so that’s a federal offense.

The Capitol Police made a statement but offered no explanation as to lack of preparation or lack of arrests.

Can you imagine if that had been a crowd of Black Lives Matter protestors?

It's a beautiful sunny day here in Baltimore. As usual, I'm working.

Yesterday went fine food-wise. I got hungry in the evening so I attacked my raw vegetables. Note to self: radishes are not my favorite.

Today's menu is a mishmash of NS and bari-wise. I made myself a big note to not forget to order NS chocolate items before warm weather returns.

One of these days I've got to stop and organize all my diet food. I had decluttered the house the prior year but all the stockpiling has made a mess of everything again. The good news is that the packets apparently keep forever.

Sometimes I check out bariatricpal.com. Just reading some of the posts on that forum are enough to help keep me on the straight and narrow with respect to food for at least a couple days.

One thing I wish I could find is a tasty, crunchy, salty snack that is low calorie and high protein. The sweet high protein snacks are excellent. I may just use somme non high protein ones sometimes, like popcorn and kettle corn.
