2021: Think Positively for a Better Year!

I'm not sure where today went.
Fed the colonies, raced home, did personal and work emails, handled a work emergency, had a quick shower, took Jack to the veterinary internist, raced home to make supper (we eat early; we're still on the schedule DH kept for years when he worked like 1 am to 11 am), did emails again, personal email threatening I'm running out of room so took time to clean out old emails, feel like I'm all revved up!
Jack has a new fan (he has a fan club of sorts). The tech fell in love. I told her he came from the York PA SPCA via Penn's transplant program (where he donated a kidney to our late Gordy). That solidified it because she came from York! The internist had no idea his tech was from York. Leave it to me to *kitten* so much I get everybody else bs'ing too.0 -
I agree on Derek and Mark. Both are missed. I record the show and lately I’ve been fast forwarding through Bruno’s comments. His overly dramatic comments have gotten old for me. Trya’s boring and I doubt they could find uglier outfits than what she wears. And 2-3 costume changes a show is ridiculous. I don’t know who most of these celebrities are either.0
-
Helene, I’ve been fast forwarding that show a lot, too. As for Tyra’s outfits, I think each one gets uglier than the last. If she’s using a stylist, she should fire him or her. If she’s not, she needs to hire one, ASAP!
I had a productive day running errands today. Before I left on my trip I had taken a Coach purse that belonged to my MIL to an excellent local shoe repair shop. The purse had been stored against something that transferred some color onto the leather. We tried cleaning it and made the situation worse. My SIL was determined to salvage the purse but the quote she got was around $85 and she wasn’t willing to pay that. The repair place I took it to charged $27.95 and except for 1 very small spot where we tried too hard to remove the stain, it looks like a brand new purse. I think SIL will be pleased.
After that I took 2 pairs of shoes that I had ordered from Zappo’s back to my local UPS store to return them. I didn’t like the way they fit and Zappo’s makes it extremely easy to return items for any reason. They pay the shipping both ways, so there is really no downside to ordering from them. Plus, they are just about the only place that carries shoes in my size, which is a 5.
My sister had given me a gift card to a local store for my birthday, so I shopped there for a little while, but didn’t find anything that appealed to me, so I’ll save my gift card for another time. From there I went to Target and did some grocery shopping, then back home.
I’ve spent the rest of my day trying to get caught up on some of the TV programs that were recorded while I was gone. I’m making progress there, but still have several to watch.0 -
Pam - there are still shoe repair shops? I had no idea When I first started working, I took my shoes to a shoe shop to be shined and I can remember the owner telling me I was one of his only customers. ( I have trouble buying shoes, too, but for the opposite reason - my feet are large!)
I haven't been in a store other than a grocery store for probably 15 years or more? Sometimes I feel guilty buying so much online - I know the conditions those folks work under - from production through delivery - aren't the greatest. But I was buoyed to hear a story on the news last night about a second group of workers. There is a large first group that's quitting their jobs and trying other things but there is now a growing second group that's rediscovering the benefits of organizing. About time, if you ask me.0 -
Grease night is not too bad btw!0

How did I miss this one?
Trump has never had the firmest grasp of U.S. history, often getting key details wrong. In 2019, for example, he praised the Continental Army for taking over airports during the American Revolution.

I wonder if anyone ever tells him about his major blunders. Just so he doesn’t repeat them. Although he probably already preserved his mistakes on Twitter. We still have a umber of shoe repair stores I the area. Probably te biggest reason for their decline is people wearing athletic shoes 24/7.0
-
The family-owned shoe repair shop I use has been in business for at least 50 years and is well-known around here as the best in the D/FW area. I’ve taken many things in there over the years and they’ve always been able to fix them. I’ve even taken in luggage that needed repairs to zippers, or to have a strap added, etc. and they always come through. They always seem to be very busy, so I think they will be here for the foreseeable future.
Helene, I agree that wearing athletic shoes and flip flops 24/7 contributes to the decline of shoe repair shops. I’m glad my shop has branched out to things like repairing purses and luggage!
Maryanne, I thought Grease night was pretty good on DWTS, too!0 -
I recordedDWTS but haven’t watch it yet. Maybe tonight.0

I think I finally get a quiet afternoon today. Whew!
Tomorrow morning I'm meeting with my endocrinologist. I asked her to help me decide what, if any, osteoporosis drugs I should start on. The nurse practitioner wanted to immediately jump to prolia even though, since I don't yet have osteoporosis, Medicare won't pay for it. Doesn't seem like a wise first step to me. So my endo offered to take over. Bless her heart!
I was thinking of unsung heroes the other day. She's one. She NEVER stopped seeing patients at any point during the pandemic and helps on the COVID ward at the hospital when they need someone (apparently when folks go on vents they sometimes become diabetic (who knew?)).
You know the second one who occurred to me? There this sweet little woman who works the self checkout at one of my grocery stores. Unlike so many of them who stand around playing with their phones, she's always looking for someone who needs help, disinfecting surfaces, and opening bags (it's daggone hard to open bags with a mask on). I stopped one day to tell her how much I appreciate her efforts. She looked a little shell shocked. I'm sure she's mostly ignored.0 -
I live in LL Bean storm chase slip ons most of the time. When I feed the grass is often wet and I need something waterproof. If there's snow or ice I have boots with cleats that go on over shoes (I keep a pair of loafers in them).
I also have Spira sneakers that I wear to do shoes (they have springs in the soles). Standing on cement floors all day does a real job on my legs. I was just thinking the other day I haven't worn those in almost two years.
Might be changing though. The Santa Paws cat show is apparently on for December.0 -
I wear mostly sandals year round. I have one pair of real shoes that I wear only if I’m still up north and it’s gotten too cold. We hope to drive south just before Thanksgiving so I should be okay to keep wearing them until we leave. All of my sandals are Clark’s. They are so comfortable I could wear a new pair home from the store without breaking them in. I’ve had multiple pairs of favorite style in several colors. I hope they never discontinue them. I wear a size 8. I probably haven’t worn a five since I was a pre-teen.0

We Accidentally Solved the Flu. Now What?

I decided to look around the grocery store a little today (usually I run in, buy produce, and run out).
The cat food aisle is sad.
The toilet paper aisle had single rolls spaced a couple inches apart, filling up about a 10 foot length of shelf. Bizarre.0 -
IN THE FRIGHTS, Disney's ESPANTO, tick tick...BOO!

I’m surprised by the number of workers who are choosing being fired over vaccinations. I have to wonder if they think it’s an idle threat. If so, they only have to look back at Ronald Reagan and the air traffic controllers. Those strikers were fired and never worked in that field again.0

But employer mandates have certainly worked much better overall than relying on people's common sense or concern for others.0 -

I was surprised to hear that lottery prizes didn’t spur the number of people to get vaccinated.I was sure a possible million dollars would convince many of the hold outs.0

I saw the throat doctor again today. He reiterated that nothing terrible will happen to me if I put off getting filler injected into my vocal chords so I decided to wait until at least spring. I did get all my questions answered about the procedure. Once he realized I was postponing he took off from the room like a bat out of he____. Guess I'm not contributing enough to his current revenue stream. LOL!
I'm ready to pretty much take the winter off doctors/procedures. I've been really really good about getting everything up-to-date. I'm ready to breathe a little. No doctors/test appointments on the calendar at all this month after tomorrow. Noting on December except my check with the retina specialist. Nothing at all in 2022 until the end of March. Fine with me; I've got SO many things that are SO far behind after the last 18 months. And Christmas is always a long checklist.0 -
We’re finishing up the l clue of our appointments early November. We need to see DH’s audiologist when we get to FL next month. The warranty on his hearing aid runs out first week of December. She’ll send them back to the company and they will check them and replace ant worn parts.0

I wasn’t surprised that offering bonuses or prizes didn’t get more people to get vaccinated. I did my Master’s thesis on a behavioral health approach used with juvenile first offenders who were offered a monetary reward for completing contracts negotiated between the kid, their parents and the counselor to see if it would lead to changes in behaviors. It didn’t make much difference in most cases. I think at this point the holdouts on vaccination are pretty hardcore. The ones who were on the fence have likely gotten their shots and the ones who are left are pretty determined not to buckle under pressure to get vaccinated, for whatever silly reason they may have.0

Really interesting! What my labor and employment colleagues are seeing is that employer mandates are having some effect. I guess there are still some folks who need their jobs.
I've read article after article, op ed after op ed, about what's going on in people's heads and I'm no closer to having a clue.

I suspect that people are more motivated by the threat of loss of income than they are by the promise of payment for getting the shot. And now I’m hearing that unvaccinated patients will no longer receive free treatment if they contract COVID, so I think that might motivate a few people to get the shots.
BTW, did y’all know that FEMA will pay up to $9,000 for the funeral if one dies from COVID? The death certificate has to state that as the COD, and an itemized bill must be submitted, but apparently those are the main requirements. I had no idea this was being done.0 -
I hadn’t heard about funeral expenses either. It makes me think of those who lost multiple family members in quick succession, particularly before vaccines were available. They would never be able to afford all those funerals. We had a very heavy storm pass through last night. Around midnight, there was a terrific crash. It sounded like a bomb went off lightning hit something in the neighborhood. Surprisingly, the power didn’t go out. We’re going out to meet a friend for lunch. I’ll be looking for trees that might have been hit by lightning.0
-
Seems like free funerals should disappear now that vaccination is widely available.
Unfortunately employers are limited in what they can do with respect to charging employees more for health insurance if they don't get vaccinated.
But I can certainly see hospitals making a distinction. The more distinctions we see the more people we'll see vaccinated.
Of course I wasn't even asked at the ENT yesterday or the endocrinologist last week about vaccination status which surprised me. (And those doctors are part of two very different health systems).
The fancy check in procedure Hopkins ran in their buildings through much of their pandemic is no longer even being given lip service although you still get the email to fill out.0
