I think the funeral home still owes dad a memorial service but frankly I'd be opposed at this point. It's been almost a year and I really do think people should still not be congregating.

Speaking of this time of year, I told DH he either makes room for a turkey in the downstairs refrigerator or assume there will be no turkey this year.

We had a wicked storm come night. The rain came down in buckets and there was a lightning strike in the neighborhood. It sounded like a bomb went off. We drove through the neighborhood today and I expected to see a downed tree. Nothing was visible. DH thinks lightning struck the arrestor on top of a power pole. When that happens, the lightning goes to ground without damage. I was surprised we didn’t lose power. We’re going to get rain and high winds tonight. My IPad and phone are charged, just in case.

Wow! I'd read about storms on the east coast and I guess you're where they landed! We got heavy rain the day before but so far that's it! (Makes a mess feeding the colonies though.)

I see much of New England is now without power so I'm thinking you may have gotten hit as well last night.

I had my six month checkup with my retina specialist yesterday. I used to see him once yearly but since I’ve started having issues with the buckle placed in my eye during surgery to repair my detached retina, I have to see him more frequently. At least he has agreed to let me self-treat it when my eye becomes irritated so that I don’t have to go to his office every time it happens, which is about every 3-4 weeks. He refilled the prescription drops I use for this and now I’m set for the next 6 months. If the irritation gets worse or more frequent, he may have to remove the buckle, but that places me at a 10% chance of having another retina detachment. I’d like to avoid that, if possible so I’ll continue with the eye drops, as needed, for as long as I can.

I’ve started prepping cookie dough and freezing it for some of my holiday baking this year. I’m planning to give cookies to most of my giftees this year, so wanted to get an early start on it. Most cookie doughs can be frozen with no loss of flavor for up to 3 months as long as they are well wrapped. The hardest part for me is deciding which ones to make. I have literally thousands of recipes to choose from. What are some of your favorites?

The Cape was really hit hard by the storm. We were without power 35 hours. Am message from the power company said everyone have power back by 6 pm Saturday. Yikes. 35 hours was bad enough. I can’t imagine going an additional 2 day in the dark. The house got down to about 60 degrees. With sweaters and blankets, it was doable. I had planned to get blood work done yesterday morning so I was fasting. The lab was closed because of no power. I tried to get coffee 2 places but the line was out the door and it was cold and rainy. I went to Panera and the line was long but at least I was inside. The guy taking orders said he’d been there a year and he’d never seen it so busy. The pastry case was almost empty and they were only making a limited menu. I wanted an egg sandwich but settled for a bagel.

I'm glad the retina specialist is working with you. I absolutely LOVE mine! When we moved to Baltimore, medical care was not even on our minds (too young!) but what a blessing it turned out to be. They do NOT have these types of resources in central PA.

Cookie dough sounds great! I'd be afraid too much of it would never get made into cookies.

35 hours, wow! I wonder how long our generator would run on the gas we have here. I'll have to ask DH. There's supposed to be a ton of tidal flooding here but hopefully that won't impact us.

I don't think any of us could ever have imagined living like this in our lifetime.

Definitely rainy here today (wasn't too bad feeding but is to get worse). DH says it's also supposed to get very windy.

As long as we have power, I'm going to hunker down today and try to get a couple work projects done and then start on CROM's government forms (due 11/15).

When all those folks do their zoom appearances on TV I LOVE that so many of them have walls of books behind them.

It’s been extremely windy here for the past 2 days, with gusts of 50+ miles per hour. I think it’s supposed to get better today, but it’s still blowing right now. There are a lot of power outages, but so far we are ok. DH won’t get to try out the new generator just yet, it appears. He invested in one that runs on gasoline, natural gas, or propane, so I think he’s got all the bases covered, LOL!

I need to get my nails done today and pick up a prescription, so I hope the winds do die down soon. I’ll wait until mid afternoon and hopefully it will be better by then.

Up until 2021 someone put out a Grammy CD every year (I guess with whatever Grammy nominated songs they could get the right to). I'm listening to one of the older ones in my van and got stuck on Kelly Clarkson's Piece by Piece, wondering what she thinks about that song now that she's in the middle of such a nasty divorce. Well, Google has the answer to everything:

That sounds like quite the versatile generator (have to ask DH about that one). Of course now that I've learned there is such a thing as a whole house generator, I'm like "why don't we have that?"

We briefly considered a whole house generator, but the cost was prohibitive considering how infrequently (we hope) we would need it. This one should be sufficient to power the refrigerator, the freezer, a couple of lamps, and the fan to our natural gas heating units, if DH can figure out how to string an extension cord from the attic to the generator. We’ve had a natural gas connection on the back wall of the house that we never used before (it was supposed to be for a gas grill, but was placed incorrectly by our builder), so DH had a plumber come out and fix it so we can use it for the generator. Last year we lost power for 3.5 days, but we never lost our natural gas.

We’re supposed to get more rain Saturday. I hope we don’t lose power again. I had my mammogram today. We saw a lot of utility trucks on many streets trying to restore power.

Power outages seem to be more frequent but maybe it just feels that way. A lot in this house runs on natural gas, including the heat, the stove and the hot water. When we had that earthquake (something no one here had any experience with) DH immediate ran to try to hold down the oven - he was afraid of it coming loose. I guess if they outlaw new gas stove, we'll be switching. I never used a gas store before we bought this house.

We also had misty weather. It looks like it would cool but it’s 61 degrees and comfortable outside.

Helene, I’m the one who suggested the Estelle Ryan books. I’m so glad you’re enjoying them. I think the characters are extremely well written, and they continue to develop with each book. I only wish the author could publish them more quickly!

Pam, sorry for te confusion If Maryanne hasn’t tried this series, she should. She’ll like it. Since I’m just starting the series, I have a lot of titles to anticipate.

Yep, definitely Pam! I checked amazon and see I bought the first two but with 25 pages of books on my kindle I guess they got lost in the sea of books! LOL!

Article on hospital system vaccine mandates in Maryland. I thought this was interesting ----

At hospitals, doctors have been the most vaccinated group and support staff the least, according to the hospital association. Hospitals in more rural areas on the Eastern Shore and Western Maryland have lower vaccination rates, mirroring their communities.
