Happy Independence Day!
2 -
We had a good day with our family yesterday. My dad, all the kids and two of my grandkids came over for the day. After lunch, we went swimming in the pool, then some played a few games of corn hole, while others went inside and played euchre (a Midwestern card game). Most everyone left around 9, but my youngest son and dad stayed to watch an adventure movie with us. It was a long but great day.0

I mentioned this in another thread, but am posting it here. This was an impulse purchase a couple of months ago and we finally got around to putting it up yesterday afternoon - just before the family came over to celebrate Independence Day. I didn't have a camera with me when I was pushing my granddaughters on it - but it was a big hit!

Also, on Saturday I finally finished my gardening project for this year. This is the only way we'll get strawberries. I tried years ago and lost EVERY berry to the birds and bunnies. I made the smaller cage last year for a couple of strawberry pots I had on my deck container garden, but that only yielded 1 or 2 berries a day. In mid-May, my husband made the raised bed for me and within a couple of days I had everything planted. (The plants are all runners from my sister and a few that I was able to over-winter in my garage.) Then I got busy with work, and travel for more work, and opening the pool, and bridal showers and on and on... so the construction of the cage got put off. We lost the first ripe strawberry to some critter last week and I knew I had to get moving.

Wow, that is so cool, Cindy. Love that idea. We are wanting to put out some blueberry bushes, the ones we had in Hickory produced quite a few. Wade did something similar for us to hang the netting on and keep the birds off the berries. We had bags and bags of blueberries in the freezer when we moved. My SIL took them for her dogs and herself (they really like blueberries I guess! LOL)
We didn't do much yesterday. We had hot dogs for lunch and then rested until service in the evening. We listened to the booming of fireworks off in the distance in the evening but didn't see any way out here in the boonies (as mom like's to call it).0 -
Oh Cindy - what a beautiful yard and woods! I can imagine lots of birds and bunnies!
We didn't do much yesterday, but go to church. Today, Bill moved one of our nightstands downstairs and did some work on it. When it is done, we will do the same for the other one. They are very old, and we haven't done anything to them since we purchased probably 20 years ago. They were due for some TLC. This is a great thing to get Bill busy on something. I threatened to spend $300 on ones that weren't good wood if he didn't fix these. That finally did it. At first he said to buy them, then he said, that he didn't want junk in our antique bedroom.

Show us before and after pictures Connie. I love seeing old furniture made new again!0

I don't think that what he is doing would show up well in pictures and the worst one pretty much done. He is amazing when he does furniture, though. One time he bought a high-boy chest in trash bags and it turned out gorgeous. The mirror frame alone was in 17 pieces. I will post a picture of that later. He just sees what furniture can be.0

That is stunning! You'd never know that mirror had been in pieces.
My husband fixed this table for me. It was my grandmother's and had been her mother's. One of the legs was broken clean off and the drawer was cracked. He not only fixed the leg but taught himself how to do inlay when he fixed the drawer.

Beautiful. I had a dream about one of those tables that has stuck with me for probably 25 years. I dreamed that we bought one and got it home. When we opened the drawer it was full of "real" jewelry. Thousands of dollars worth. Now, every time I see one, I have this urge to open the drawer!
Bill did antique restoration for many years for part of his living. He worked in "reconstruction" and insurance restoration of homes. Sometimes there was a lot of work, sometimes he worked on antique restoration. He probably could have made his living on antiques alone, but the benefits from the restoration business helped. He still has people calling him to work on furniture. We bought and sold a LOT of furniture...we had several sales outlets, mostly in Missouri by the Lake of The Ozarks. That made good excuses to go to the Lake (and my parents lived there at the time).
Today, people are painting the beautiful wood pieces and it hurts my heart. I don't mind painted wood furniture, cabinetry and trim, but those gorgeous wood grains need to show on antiques!0 -
I feel the same way about woodgrain. You reminded me - I need to find someone to refinish my Stickley cherry dining room table. I'm just sick about it. I did something I shouldn't have done about 2 months ago - I unloaded my Costco purchases onto the dining room table and amongst those was a 4 (maybe 5?) pack of Lysol wipes. I didn't get to putting things away until the next morning and nearly had a heart attack when I discovered they'd packaged them upside down in the plastic shrink wrap and the liquid in the wipes had leaked out of the packaging. I just checked - it was a 5 pack. I have the outline of the five containers chemically burned into my table. I'm afraid to let my husband work on it though as he's an amateur woodworker. I really need to look harder to find someone qualified to bring it back to life. For now - I've got a tablecloth covering it. Still makes me sick to think about it.0

Wow, that is beautiful. I've never seen one where there is a lock on each drawer! And look at the pattern on that wood, beautiful!

I just went back and looked at the picture again - Should have dusted the top before taking the picture...... I had an old laptop sitting on it that I am trying to get ready to take to my Mom. I took it off and didn't dust under it.1
-
Never noticed, must be because I'm used to seeing dust on top of my furniture! LOL!
Beautiful table, Cindy. I guess you've opened that drawer and didn't find any jewelry in it! It just never works like in our dreams!
My grandfather made this gorgeous coffee table that we had in our house when I was growing up. I would have loved to have that piece, but when my family decided to walk away from a relationship with me, I never saw the table again. He did all of this cut out scroll work, just beautiful. My other grandfather was a wood worker and had a shop set up in his house. He did small stuff though. he would make wooden toys for the kids in his church at Christmas time. He made inlaid clocks for his grandkids when they got married. I have mine displayed, although the workings quit a long time ago. Hard to find that craftsmanship nowadays.
We were very blessed to not have had Elsa affect us more than a downpour in the middle of yesterday. I heard some thunder way off in the distance once, but for the most part we came through untouched! Praise the Lord!0 -
We had rain here too and even some hail (!) but other than that, no harm done here either.
I also didn't notice any dust. Too busy looking at the beautiful woodgrain.0 -
Here is the end table finished. AARG - I cannot get a picture to download from my phone. It looks like the front is kind of beat up, but it is a little bit from the light and the grain of the wood. It looks so amazing compared to what it looked like before.

Oh super nice! I know what you mean by the light. It looks like he did a great job.0

We have friends coming over tonight for dinner. I've got a little housecleaning to do, but not too bad.
Two baby showers this weekend - one at my house! I've got some preparations to do yet for that, but I only had one day of work this week, so I have plenty of time. It will be a challenge though. Our refrigerator broke last month and my husband was able to order some sensors and fix it. BUT it broke down again the other day, so we had to empty it again and he's waiting for more parts. I really hope he can fix it before this weekend.
I'm about to get busy again with work starting next week. I'll be in New Mexico for four days and I'm looking forward to it as I've never been there.0 -
Oh boy, you might need one of those hats with the fan and water sprayer in it, Cindy. I hope it won't be too hot while you are there, but I hear it's pretty country in NM! Have fun with your showers - what crazy games have you got planned???
Very hot here. I thought it was quite warm in the house (77 for Mom's sake) and then went outside to water the plants and came back in and it was sooo cool! Yeah! I'll just step outside when I am feeling too warm in the house. Our bedroom is warmer than the rest of the house because it's on the corner and gets quite a bit of sun throughout the day. I was just lying in bed sweating last night (and I don't sweat!). Wade had to turn up the air, but Mom was in bed so she stayed warm! Our neighbor used to keep his house at 80! Yikes!
Hope y'all have a very good day!0 -
I put my daughter and daughter-in-law in charge of games. I think there's a baby bingo game and a word unscramble game with all of the scrambled words being movies with the words baby or boy in them and a goofy one with a bunch of faces printed out and you have to guess if it's a face in labor or a face from a horror movie.
Silly girls.0 -
Kim - We keep our house on 79 due to Bill. I keep fans going and it is okay. Bill will still cover up with a throw a lot of times. Oh well, at least it is good for the electricity bill. Winter is harder. Bill has an electric throw that he uses because I say that 73 is warm enough in the winter. He takes some medications that make him cold...especially his feet.
Enjoy your baby shower, and hopefully the fridge gets fixed soon.0 -
We have our house set to right around 75 +/- a degree both winter and summer. In the summer, as long as the humidity is out of the house, I don't mind it not being super cold.0
-
Oh wow, the games sound fun, Cindy, especially the goofy face one! That will be a hoot!
I'm glad we aren't the only ones with a warm house! We have friends who keep their's in the 60's and I have to bring a sweater just in case I get cold. Mom had a sweater on yesterday even though it was 76-77 - sigh! She goes outside to warm up, and it's in the 80's out there. Oops, forgot to water the plants today. I'll get them this evening when there won't be as much evaporation!0 -
I planted into a train planter that we have...they were silk, but that's the kind I don't kill. Today it has rained all day and my BIL told me he thinks they are growing....0
-
that's funny!0
-
My kind of plants. Mom loves plants and has a green thumb, unfortunately, I am the one who has to do the leg work now! Oh well, adds steps to the tracker!0
-
Laughing about the "plants", my BIL asked me the next day if the flowers were real or if they were artificial. He started to water them and thought they looked kind of funny!
