January - Nutritarian New Year

It is tradition to make January "Nutritarian New Year" although we've expanded the group a bit to embrace all the plant based docs and plans. Main thing is WFPB, little to no SOS.

Would love to hear your goals/ambitions for 2022. I'm really going to try to make 2022 the BEST year ever! I had two glasses of wine with dinner last night and now going to completely avoid alcohol for 6 weeks and follow Dr. F's 6 week plan. Also going to work on my attitude. Try to release the negativity that has seeped into my head and manage stress better.

Going to keep up the morning treadmill habit (at least 20 minutes every a.m.) and add 30 minutes of more treadmill or another exercise in the evenings, plus get back to the mindfulness practice and/or yoga at least 10 or 15 minutes before bed.

Also going to continue the good sleep habits I've developed over the past year. I go to bed at 9:00, read for a bit, asleep by 10:00. This lets me wake up pretty naturally at 5 a.m. rather than cursing the alarm.

And set some boundaries with work! Leave the office on time even if I end up doing more work from home in the evenings, and try to take at least one day on the weekends that I do NO work.

I think those are enough goals for me for one month. :)

Oh and I forgot to mention this morning, I picked up my juices yesterday so today and tomorrow are all juice (6 a day). I just had my 4th one so I'm a bit behind schedule but will get the last two in before bedtime.

Ended up running to the office for a few today, then did a BIG grocery shopping run. I haven't been to the regular grocery in a couple months and was low on all kinds of household goods plus needed dog food and treats. My salad prepper is taking this week off so I got 3 boxes of baby lettuce and a container of grape tomatoes. I have carrots so I'll throw those through the food processor tomorrow to shred. I also got broccoli and asparagus that I will lightly steam to add to salads. Other than salads and fruit I'll be eating my soups from what I froze a couple weeks ago. Should be a no cooking at all required kind of week.

    Happy New Year!

Those are some great plans for 2022, Mihani.

I'm cutting out most carbs this month (the bad ones especially), once we are able to do a grocery shop. Tomorrow is supposed to warm up and start to rain, but then there is more snow in the forecast for the following day. It is unusual for this area to have snow for an extended period of time. Ironically, my snow gloves and waterproof pants can't be delivered due to the weather LOL

I've gotten into a pattern of waking up around 3 am and not being able to get back to sleep easily, so I've been reading through the Ali Reynolds series by JA Jance that I mentioned a while back, an hour or two at a time in the wee hours. I'm starting #14 now so only a few more before I need to find something else. Jance has other series, so that will be what I try next.

Mornin' Campers... slept in until 6 a.m. Got up and did 20 minutes on the treadmill. My brother loaned me his under desk elliptical to try out and see how I like it before I invest in one. I hope it works out because it would be nice to get some exercise in while sitting at my desk, plus my hips get really stiff and sore when I am sitting for such long periods so it would be nice if it helps with that.

Yesterday all juice went fine and getting ready to have my first juice for today. Tomorrow will be on to melon and mixed berries with chia seeds and a couple walnut halves for breakfast, soup from the freezer collection for lunch, and big ol' salads with beans added for dinner. I'll get in an apple after lunch or dinner with a smidge of peanut or almond butter. I also want to get back to having warm lemon water in the mornings so I bought a bag of lemons yesterday.

Hope you can get out for some shopping soon, Carla. I will have to look into those books. I remember you mentioning them but I didn't get to them yet.

Gosh, you two are way beyond anything I can think about right now. Just trying to not eat so much is my goal...have been stress eating...the juice does help...not juice fasting.

Having coffee...got up way too early...have two stores to go to this morning...Sprouts and Target...then back for a nap, shower, dress and off to my sister's. Niece is here til 1/8. Not too many chances to see her and her DH and my great niece...who is two.

Class tomorrow for TKR (total knee replacement)...just trying not to freak out at this point. My coworker (other receptionist) and next door neighbor will be my go to girls...hoping that is enough...sister will stop by ... coworkers will stop by...but those first two will be my angels.

Later, girls...keep up the good work.

    Morning all...

Oh my gosh, all night, I dreamt that I was late for my class...it was now 9:30 and I said, I'll make it in time...cept the class started at 9! I kept seeing me try and get myself together to go and I could never make it out the door...and I wasn't home...I was around a lot of people...it was the weirdest thing.
lotsocoffee.gifCoffee from Nepresso...had to order new ones since the old ones were 3 years old. LOL It's good...no mess to clean up...they do have a recycle bag you use to send back used capsules. It will work perfectly when I am recovering
    .

    Three juices
Dr. M's green onion soup with fresh spinach thrown in
Left over Daring original with broccoli, rice ramen and Kinders sauce.

    CUTIES.

Had a lovely visit yesterday with family. Going back tomorrow...ordering in...Pita Jungle...all Mediterranean fare...easy for a vegan.

Oh yeah, this coffee is the lightest roast and it is still kinda strong...one cuppa do ya!

Enjoy your breaking of the fast, Mihani...my hat's off to you...I couldn't do it.

Carla, hope the snow melts and you can get out, finally. Enjoy your fresh shopping trip.

    Later, dollies! mornshinesmile.gif

Hope your class goes well today, Nance! I have a N'esspresso too and used it every day for 6 or more years. I placed a pod order at the start of covid and never received it then got irritated with the company and purchased an Amazon brand equivalent machine that has a basket for adding single serve ground coffee. I always liked the convenience of the N'espresso but didn't like storing up all of those pods to recycle so this new solution works better for me and I get to order any coffee I want. The N'espresso really is a good option though and will be great for you after surgery -- so quick and easy.

The snow almost disappeared overnight, and we went down the driveway to chip away at the mound blocking the road only to find that some kind neighbor must have come along with machinery and done it for us.

I have a headache that's been lingering for many days now so I haven't been accomplishing much. In a bit of a rut that I need to dig myself out of. Now that the field is mostly green again, a walk with the doggos should help with that.

    Have a lovely day!

Can't wait until your surgery is done and over with, Nance, and you won't be stressing about it anymore. That's weird you dreamed you missed the class. How did it go? Did you get all your questions answered?

Carla, that's so nice! I have a neighbor who does little things like that and I've never been able to figure out who it is! I wish they would reveal themselves so I could give them a gift card or at least say thank you.

I got off to a rocky start today. Overslept and was in a rush so I just had some V-8 for breakfast. Tomorrow will definitely be fruit for breakfast. Lunch was glowing spiced lentil soup from the freezer. I realized after I started heating it up that it's not strictly ETL 6 week plan compliant because of the coconut milk, but I do leave out the oil and I am not calling that a fail. Dinner is going to be a big ol' salad. I got going on steaming the fresh broccoli and asparagus as soon as I walked in the door, chopped some grape tomatoes and a carrot. Just need to add lettuce, chickpeas and dressing. I haven't had any fruit today so I will have an orange and some blueberries for dessert with chia seeds and cinnamon.

I had put on a fair amount of water weight with all the extra salt over Christmas and New Year's Eve. The juice knocked off 5 pounds in two days and now I'm ready to move on with a solid WFPB plan.

Will get some treadmill time tonight since I missed this morning, but I have some work to do yet tonight as well. Even if I just get 20 minutes that's cool though.

Class was totally fabulous...eased my mind on so many things.

Today, plumber coming to fix garbage disposal. As I was making my Nespresso, power out in the kitchen...it's still dark out, but will go to the fuse box in a bit and see if I can fix it. This house is so old...making a cuppa coffee triggers the fuse? Oy vey.

Next door neighbor coming over for coffee later this morning to go over things while I am in the hospital. Might be two-three days. Concern is for Lulu. Peeps at work, I believe, are going to step up and check on my sweet girl.

Lunch/Dinner with my niece and sister and everyone later today. They (niece, her dh and baby girl) go back to Houston Saturday, so my last time visiting with them.

My spinach added into Dr. M's soup...kinda good. brb

Just cancelled my sparkletts water delivery...had the water dispenser since 2019...but no longer can get the five gallon up over the threshold...it slides on the tile and a bottom loader, but too dangerous for me to get in the house. Now, using a brita and ordering cases of water to be delivered...drinking. Our water is horrible here in AZ.

Covid test 1/10 and meeting with surgeon 1/11. Gotta have my list of questions ready.

I'll tell you, the hospital where I will be...only Orthopedic and Spine surgery...that's it. That is all they do. Really happy about that. No sickness to speak of. Really organized...and and and..
    and

they have a VEGAN MENU...sooooooooooooo happy! I was stressing about that.

It is really about the patients, getting them mobile and up and doing for themselves. Private rooms. Visitors allowed...they even can stay over night.

I don't think I am going to have people (my sister and her dh) come until time to pick me up. It's a ways and all I am going to be doing is icing and getting up and walking and icing and trying to pee on my own! LOL

Everyone had a family member there cept me...so I did ask about home nurse. The case manager will listen to my situation, once admitted and begin to set that up (home nurse and pt) if I qualify.

The surgery is the easy part...it's the recovery...and getting range of motion...and walking without a limp and pain. I've got my work cut out for me...but I am sooooooooooooo ready to get back to the living.

That about does it. Later, folks.

That's awesome that your class helped put your mind at ease, Nance. Sounds like you are feeling better.

Went to get my hair cut on the way home. It looks SO much better. I was way past due.

Plan wise it's good today! Still need to treadmill although I don't know if I will or not. I was kind of tired and out of sorts today. Thinking about blowing off doing more work and everything else... get to bed extra early, get up and treadmill in the a.m., and try not to be so grumpy tomorrow.

    B - a cup of blueberries with a tablespoon of chia/flax, cinnamon
L - black eyed peas and cabbage from the freezer supply
D - big ol' salad with chickpeas added, an apple with a smidge of PB

More snow! We put in a Whole Foods order that we're getting delivered. Joe is going to meet them at the bottom of the driveway. Assuming that they make it here, I'll be doing some fresh juicing tomorrow morning with collard greens, kale, and lots of other veggies. I will probably add an apple for flavor.

Another storm is coming through this afternoon and continuing through to tomorrow so we're potentially looking at another foot of snow. What? The year before the last we had no snow whatsoever. I'm curious if this is this is an aberration or the new norm.

If we have groceries, we'll be doing just fine and if we don't, we still have plenty to eat, just a less healthy variety. Good thing we like spending time together haha. pretty much every day with only a few hours apart in total since the start of COVID.

Sounds like your class was really informative and helpful, Nance. I hope that you get set up with a healthcare worker that can come to your home and assist you.

Both of you getting haircuts and I just cut my own hair the other day. funny.
Mine is long so I just trimmed off the bottom inch or so. It might be uneven in the back but I don't have to look at that and so far Joe hasn't complained LOL

Yay for nice visit with family, Nance.

Carla, I'd be afraid to try cutting my own hair. Fingers crossed your groceries arrive before the additional snow.

It was a stressful day but I seem to be in a good place for the moment where I don't think about eating when I'm stressed. After Friday I will have one perfect week behind me, and I'm very motivated to stay the course.

B - blueberries with chia/flax and a few walnut halves, cinnamon
L - lentil veggie soup from the freezer supply
D - big ol' salad (left out beans since I had a big portion of lentil soup at lunch), cantaloupe, small handful of pumpkin seeds

I've enjoyed the salads this week. Pretty simple just spring mix, carrot, grape tomatoes, steamed broccoli and asparagus, shane and simple vinaigrette, fresh ground pepper. I'm not fully following the ETL 6 week plan because I didn't have any mushrooms and the salad dressing has maple syrup, but I'll try to get totally there next week after a grocery run.

Now I think about it I will make the Eat Your Greens soup this weekend. That makes it easy to get the cooked veggies and greens, mushrooms and onions in one bowl. Sometimes I add a can of chickpeas to it.

Good luck with the delivery, Carla...and way to go, killing your program, Mihani.

I have been doing pretty good...yesterday's WYW Asian sauce was so good on my broccoli and tofu stir fry....making it again today.

I need help with a sure fire oatmeal recipe. I think I ate it raw like Dr. Esselstyn for almost two years...1/2 cup oats, flax, cinnamon, blueberries and plant milk. Kinda sick of it. I cooked some yesterday...did not like it. I grew up on Cream of Wheat...I STILL LOVE IT...but it's wheat...and I am trying to stay away from wheat. Any ideas?

    today

    juices, two
just egg with spinach and chao cheese
    broccoli and tofu stir fry
homemade hot chocolate...looking for a recipe

    the end.

    HAGDE!

Going to start doing some meal prep...and freeze for after surgery.

rice in little containers ...think I mentioned I found a super way to reheat from frozen...fool proof.
    Gardein GF meat mixture, taco
I am going to try and cook up Tinkyada noodles (gluten free) and freeze portions

    Not sure what else.

I am looking for brothy soups with some noodles/rice and with frozen veggies ... easy stuff

Frozen meals: amy's, cedarlane...will look for more GF plant based.

Oatmeal and Juices...which I can order. Also, some Grub Hub delivery in a pinch.
Trying to stay away from as much gluten as possible (not celiac), but it does contribute to inflammation...THE EVIL ENEMY! devilsmile.gif

Nance, have you tried steel cut oats? They are better cooked than rolled oats (at least in my opinion) because they don't get mushy. You could also try other grains like millet or barley in place of oats too.

I stopped at the healthy carryout and got a few entrees for the weekend since I'm going to be busy with work again.

B - blueberries and cantaloupe with chia/flax and a few walnut halves
L - butternut squash and white bean soup from the freezer
D - big ol' salad, oven fried tofu from the healthy carryout

The butternut squash and white bean soup didn't freeze as well as hoped. Was kind of watery. It was still good, but definitely lost something.

Better go get my salad made it's nearly 6:00. We got our first snow today and driving home was a chore. Hardly any snow stuck to the roads but people were driving like we had 4 feet out there so it was a long long drive.

Nance, for easy oats that can be made at home or work, here's Dr. Fuhrman's recipe. Joe has this almost every day.

    1/4 c rolled oats
    1/2 banana sliced
1 cup frozen blueberries (or fresh, or if work, thawed is fine)
2 to 3 Tbsp pure pomegranate or black cherry juice
    3 walnut halves, in chunks

Mix everything in a microwavable bowl. Do mix this all well to distribute everything for even cooking.
Microwave for 2 to 3 minutes depending on your microwave. Stir well again.
If mixing ahead of time and making later, I would keep the walnuts aside so they retain their crunch. When I make it, I always leave them out until after everything is cooked and mixed, then sprinkle on top. Personal preference.

We did get our delivery of groceries. The driver was very excited to see that Joe was at the end of the driveway. Joe had gone down with our side-by-side utility vehicle which was great for loading up the groceries and also for driving the delivery guy up to our house. Apparently, Whole Foods app doesn't let the driver mark the food as delivered unless they are exactly at the correct location. What an ordeal for him. When we saw the weather in the morning, we tried to cancel but the order had already been gathered.

Still struggling to get back on track with food and mood. Next year I'm staying on the straight and narrow through the holidays. The snow is terrible for our walking routine. Rain is no problem, but the snow is too cold for the doggo's paws and treacherous for the humans on the hills. It is above freezing and raining so it is a sloppy mess out there. We're going to have snow and rain back and forth this weekend and then we should be done for the year. Whew!

Thanks so much, Carla...sounds yum...might give it a try, once I am able to cook for myself again.

Really happy you got your delivery...hopefully your healthy bountiful will get you going in the right direction again...making small improvements I have found, work the best.

I am looking into DAILY HARVEST...it's all wfpb...frozen...might be good. I am going to clean out the freezer on Sunday and see if I have room. I am going to get more Amy's and Cedarlane. Daily Harvest might just be what I need to round out easy cooking/prep.

At work right now...just took a minute out to check on you guys. Later, dollies.

Yay for getting your delivery, Carla. I totally get the blah feeling and struggling to get back into the groove.

Nance, frozen entrees and some fresh veggies/fruits sound like a great plan for recovery from surgery. Do the best you can and don't even think perfection.

I've had a day and just doing a quick check-in. More tomorrow.

B - cantaloupe with chia/flax and a couple walnut halves
L - pad thai from the healthy carryout (no oil and brown rice noodles)
    D - big ol' salad

Later, my sweets...going to go to my phone and see if I can attach the screen shot.

Glad you found some stuff to help get you through recovery, Nance. Expensive, but totally worth it for your recovery time. Are you talking about the leafside? I don't think that is Dr. Greger's food he was just an advisor to them.

I'm headed to the little organic grocery near my house since I just need a few things. Onions and peppers, fresh basil and some cherry tomatoes because I have a spaghetti squash and want to make this: https://plants-rule.com/learn-how-to-cook-plant-based-oil-free-roasted-spaghetti-squash-bowls-with-cherry-tomatoes/ Just stumbled across this plants rule website and the recipes look soooo good.

Have laundry going. Got my booster yesterday and feel okay just a little tired, but my arm hurts like hell. There's a lump. That didn't happen before. I'm always tired though, so who knows if this is tired from the shot or just usual tired. LOL

    Plan for today:
B - blueberries with chia/flax, cinnamon, a few walnut halves
L - roasted spaghetti squash with cherry tomatoes
D - fajita bowl (basically a big salad with salsa, refried beans and sauteed peppers and onions on top)

Probably a nap after laundry is done, and then get busy on some work I brought home. Lots to do this weekend. Did I mention one of the gals was out Tuesday through Friday sick? Looks like this year isn't going to be any better with people showing up to work.

I am disappointed... the organic grocery didn't have any decent peppers. They were totally shriveled and moldy. I don't know if this place is going to be able to stay in business honestly. It is a local independent company with just two stores. One of the first organic groceries opened in the 70's. For a long time it was the only place to find most organic brands and a lot of great vegan things, but now with regular groceries carrying all that (not to mention the popularity of Whole Foods and Trader Joe's) I think it is deeply cutting into their customer base and they have declined. I don't go there as often myself anymore because their produce is so hit or miss.

But I did find good grape tomatoes (will use those instead of cherry) and fresh basil. It's too darn cold to go anywhere else.

Didn't get around to breakfast and I'm feeling really blah now. I think the shot is making me feel more fatigued than I thought. Laundry is done so I'm going to eat a small salad and go back to bed for a while.

The day after our booster, both Joe and I were tired and achy. It was a lounge around and nap kind of day for us. The good news is that we were fine the following day. No lumps at injection site here, but sore arm for a day or two.

I couldn't finish the meals that we ordered from Leafside. They are still in the cupboard and need to be tossed.

Our deluxe food processor is out of commission. The container dropped on the floor and cracked. Breville replacement containers are out of stock in the U.S. and have been for several years. Lots of complaints about this. The only way to get one is to order from Canada but the company won't ship to a US address. Since the border is hard / expensive to cross right now, that's not an option. In the end, I ordered a mini Kitchen Aid processor for $40 that we'll use until the border opens up. Then I can donate the mini to my parents when we're done with it. Who knows, maybe I'll like it better!

Another snow day here. I'm going to put a warp on one of my small weaving looms to make a scarf. I've come up with a simple windowpane sort of pattern. Once it is started, I'll post a pic. I think I showed the yarn I am using earlier in December.

Dyeing is on hold because I can't get motivated to cross back and forth from house to shop in the snow. Planning on doing some of that this coming week.

Going to force myself to take a walk outside with the dogs, and maybe later go sledding for some exercise. It is hard work play!

Yep, he was the advisor...Leafside. Not a fan.

This came to 14 meals, delivered, all plants for 86 bucks. Normally, 110...I think reasonable. Order Grubhub or delivery...good luck finding such fresh all vegan WFPB meals. Now, the tricky part will be ...IS IT GOOD. That is to be determined.

    Back to work.

I really enjoyed the spaghetti squash recipe. Simple and filling. I didn't have as many tomatoes as I would have liked by the time I picked over the two packages that I bought. I think I'm done attempting to buy produce at that store. I'd add a bit more spice next time but will definitely make it again.

I get a kick out of spaghetti squash. It's fun to scrape out the strands and watch it magically turn into spaghetti.

Carla, I'm going to be buying a new food processor this year. The bowl on mine has a very fine crack from being dropped. It doesn't leak but can't be good. It is probably 25 years old so I think replacing the entire unit rather than buying a new bowl makes more sense.

    Plan for today:
B - low sodium V-8, cup of blueberries with cinnamon, chia/flax and a few walnut halves
    L - leftover spaghetti squash
D - big ol' salad with chickpeas

I think I'm going to roast the chickpeas... will try this recipe and leave out the salt: https://www.wholly-plants.com/herb-roasted-chickpeas/ I've made roasted chickpeas a few times and they are very tasty.
