Yay, Nance! So glad you checked in and let us know you're home and everything went great. We'll look forward to hearing more from you when you're up to it.

Carla, I'm with you on hating going to the doctor. And I actually really like my doctor! I get so anxious. Funny thing is I don't have any problem with the dentist which is what most people hate. LOL

I managed to fall off the treadmill this morning. So stupid! I had my phone sitting there and got a text. Was looking down at the phone and got my left foot off to the side too far, that foot went out from under me, hit on my right knee then landed on my *kitten* on the floor. Nice bruises and skinned up my knee and shin, and pain from my hip down to my knee on that side. So mad at myself! Lesson learned... pay attention on the treadmill!

Just had dinner. Going to take some advil and head up to bed to elevate my foot. I made it through work but it was really painful by the end of the day. Actually, walking seems to help more than sitting in a desk chair. Go figure. But we'll have to see how it feels in the morning. May need to take a couple days off the treadmill.

B - ezekiel toast with avocado
L - Dr. McD soup, orange, apple
D - 13 bean veggie soup from the freezer supply, small salad to use up what was still good from the fridge

oh no! How are you feeling today, Mihani? Hip, knee, etc...sounds like a nasty fall. I hope you're okay.

We're still struggling to get on track here with food, so we're going to go back to the intermittent fasting. No eating until 10 or 11 am, and no eating after 4 pm. We may start this weekend, but by Monday at the latest. I'll get on the scale and see how bad it is. Yikes.

I will try making this one day soon, to portion out as a sweet tooth satisfier:

    Lemon Balls
    drfuhrman.com

    Ingredients
    2 cups raw cashews
2 organic lemons, juiced and zested
1 1/2 cups unsweetened shredded coconut
    1/2 cup dates, pitted

    Steps
Place cashews in a food processor and process to a fine powder.
Add lemon juice, lemon zest, coconut and dates and process until consistency is thick and moist, adding a bit of water if needed.
Using hands, roll into small bite size balls and then roll into some extra shredded coconut to coat the ball.
    Refrigerate or freeze until firm.
This recipe makes approx. 30 balls

Oh, those lemon balls sound good, Carla! Thanks for sharing.

I'm doing okay. Knee still sore but definitely no permanent damage done. I'm just so damn mad at myself! My shoulder was really sore today which I assume was from hitting the wall. Good grief. I certainly hope I learned my lesson here. I skipped the treadmill this morning but I hope that I will be able to hit it tomorrow or Sunday at the latest.

I just started a book that I am finding really interesting. I'm only a few chapters in so I can't recommend it entirely wholeheartedly, but I know that my struggles with weight and diet are mostly in my head so I'm sharing it in case anyone is interested: Brain Powered Weight Loss

What hit me is the author says something to the effect she wakes up every morning thinking how do I live my best life, and what choices do I make to get there. This is nothing new, I know, but for some reason it is resonating with me right now.

Thing is, I lost 70 pounds 10 years ago. I had 15 or so pounds to go. Then I gained 20 back, and I've been STUCK since then. I've gone up and down the same damn 20 pounds over and over, which is incredibly unhealthy. I have made it my mission to read everything I can, take advantage of everything I can, to "cure" my thoughts, lose the 20 I gained back, and continue on with that additional 15. I am down 10 pounds from the first of the year and I have been by NO means perfect, but I'm working hard to change my thought process on the whole thing. I'm not on a diet that I go "on" or "off" of on a given day. I'm striving for healthy as possible most days, and if I have days that aren't so great oh well. It doesn't mean I have to eat like a ravenous wolverine for two days because "I'm going to eat healthy starting Monday" kind of thinking. I've been struggling with this crap for 40 years now. I'm done and going to figure it out once and for all! LOL

That's it for my rant. :)

B - ezekiel toast with a smidge of almond butter
L - Dr. McD soup, apple, orange
    D - pita pizza

I did go out after work and had a couple drinks with friends. No excuse to eat oil laden spring rolls at the restaurant. Came home and made pita pizza loaded with veggies and sprinkled with nooch. Better choice I can feel good about. And it was better than spring rolls!

Hi Magic! Glad you're home with Lulu and starting to heal. Hope you aren't in too much pain.

I got up early but went back to bed for a couple hours after some toast and tea. I didn't sleep too well night before last with my knee hurting. Maybe I hurt my knee so I could have sympathy pains for Magic.

Work work work today and tomorrow. I'm so far behind. Nothing else to do this weekend other than laundry and play with the spiralizer. I have lots of veggies to play with. Peppers, onion, cucumber, parsnip, zucchini, carrot, red cabbage, plus a couple granny smith apples. I think I'll make miso ginger dressing for this week. Looking forward to my salads being extra pretty with the spiralized veggies. I'm totally inspired by a bunch of recipes I've been browsing the past few days, but not going to do anything specific this week. Just practice with the spiralizer and use the results in regular salads.

    Plan for today...
B - toast with avocado and sliced tomato
L - soup from the freezer, sumo mandarin
D - big ol' salad with spiralized veggies and edamame

Hi Nance, I'm glad the surgery is behind you and now every step you take is one on the road to recovery. I'm surprised that the physio starts so soon, but that is great.

I bought what I think is a spiralizer many years ago but didn't have great success with it. Maybe it is time to pull it back out and try again. It sounds like a nice way to make salads feel fresh. Hope you take some time for yourself and that your knee starts feeling better, Mihani.

Yesterday I didn't have the best food day, but I did stop eating after an early dinner (4:30pm). I brushed and flossed around 5pm or so. I find that helps with snacking urges.

I forgot to post my reply, but that's okay because since starting this post, I looked at the Brain Powered Weight loss book and decided to get it, and to get a Fitbit to track my steps each day. It is arriving Tuesday, so I'll let you know what I think. I got the kindle book so will start reading that now. Yay!

I just got a new fitbit last week, Carla. The one I had quit tracking sleep and heart. Tried all the little tricks and tweaks on the fitbit support website and other websites, and nothing worked. If this one doesn't last at least two years I'm done with fitbit. May as well buy a cheapo one if they aren't going to last. I will say the new one is pretty slick with all the features, but it's bigger than my other one.

Just got back from the store. Got broccoli and mushrooms and chard. I already have kale. I'm going to make a big skillet of steam/sauteed onion, mushroom, broccoli, greens, red peppers and beans. I like having a one pot thing every week that covers all my GBOMBS, other than the seeds/nuts and berries of course. Might make some quinoa as well.

I've really been into fruit lately. Got more apples and cara cara oranges plus bananas and some pears to keep at the office to circumvent dives into the pretzels and crackers. It has been working really well for me. I keep the fruit on a big platter on the counter right under the cabinet where the peanut butter pretzels lurk so I see the fruit as soon as I wander in there thinking about grabbing a handful of pretzels.

Probably going to put off cooking until tomorrow though. I still have to unload the dishwasher, have a load of clothes in the dryer, and I'm tired. I want to be in bed early tonight.

Carla, we can have a book club! :) I feel like it is going to be helpful, but there's a lot of homework to do. I downloaded the worksheets from her website and will do those, but I think initially I'm just going to read the whole book then go back and re-read and do the other things along with it. So far it seems easy to read and relatable, and finding her style positive and encouraging. I'm about a quarter of the way through it and in the mindfulness chapter. Since I have taken a course in mindfulness and done a fair amount of reading about it over the past few years I like that she's bringing up a practical to diet/weight loss spin that I can use. I'm not as good about the practice as I should be, but I plan to start TONIGHT doing my practice every single night before bed. Even if it is just 10 or 15 minutes that's better than nothing.

I did get my miso ginger dressing made. It is one of my favorite recipes for dressing. It has sesame seeds in it but I leave those out when I'm making a batch for the week and just sprinkle some on the salad when I add the dressing. It's funny I never used miso much until a few years ago and now I love it.

    I'm chatty today. LOL

Best go play with the spiralizer and eat dinner now!

Book club! Love it! I haven't started reading it yet. I will have to do the work as I go, because knowing me, if I read it first I will never get around to that part of it. I like miso. I always have some in the fridge. It's in several of our recipes, and when I am craving comfort food and staying on track, I have that cup of miso soup I've mentioned before.

I stayed within my intermittent fasting window successfully yesterday. I had breakfast at 10 am, and dinner was done by 4:30pm. I had to have 2 cups of tea to make it through that snacky evening time. I had some dandelion detox which tastes much better than it sounds! And an herbal sleepy time blend. Plus I got in all 3 walks with the dogs. Better than I've done in a while.

Shoulder is still sore, but there is some improvement. Still no 'making' other than dyeing up small samples. The sling I ordered doesn't help. It holds my arm in a way that makes it ache. I think I'm at the point now where it is better to keep it moving a little anyway.

    plan for today
    coffee
    B - blueberry & greens smoothie
    L - apple w/ nut butter
    D - sushi bowl, oranges
    tea

Maybe I will restart the book and do the worksheets so we'll be on the same "page" haha. I can skim through what I've already read and do the worksheets.

I made a HUGE pot of soup this morning. I used the spices from the Eat Your Greens soup from Oh She Glows. Garlic, ground pepper, ginger, turmeric, cumin, cinnamon plus some no salt seasoning. It has 2 onions, 2 packages of sliced mushrooms, 2 chopped carrots, 2 gigantic broccoli crowns which once chopped nearly filled the pot. I cooked that all down a bit then added two cans of chickpeas and as much of the kale and chard as I could fit. Still have a medium sized bowl of greens that wouldn't fit so I'll use them up this week. Maybe chop them up extra fine and add to my salads.

So two bowls of soup was breakfast/lunch. Tonight will be my big spiralized salad because I was too tired to deal with it last night. I ended up just having some cabbage and blackeyed peas from the freezer supply. I'll be eating the soup for lunches this week but will have to freeze some. It's a lot of soup!

B/L - soup, cara cara orange
D - big ol' salad with spiralized veggies, ginger miso dressing, apple

So after posting that I decided to go ahead and play with the spiralizer. I had watched this gal's youtube and it worked like a charm! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7gorWlpQVks

There's a suction thing on the bottom of mine but I also wedged my cutting board between the stove and the spiralizer to be sure nothing could move and I could get more pressure on the arm. Made really pretty veggies in no time at all and it's a little bit of an arm workout.

The only thing that didn't work was the purple cabbage. Like, not at all. I probably needed to use a different blade for that but I used the spaghetti blade on everything since I was just trying to get the hang of it for now. So old school chopped up the cabbage. I will use some in my salads and cook the rest with the leftover greens that didn't fit in the soup.

I forgot that I seriously dislike raw parsnip. Yuck. I will throw the parsnip in with the greens and cabbage when I cook them. It just tastes way too "rooty" for me raw. I love it cooked.

Cooked the parsnip and some of the carrot in a skillet with coconut aminos and TJ's 21 seasoning salute then added some of the cabbage and the remaining greens. Pretty and delicious!

Haven't started the book yet, Mihani, but I will in the next day or so.

    Walk 1 under my belt.

    Plan:
    coffee
B - greens and blueberries smoothie
    L - apple w/ nut butter
D - stir 'fried' (water) veggies over noodles, few small oranges

Great plan today, Carla. I actually finished the book last night and will re-read and do the worksheets now so just let me know when you start. I'm onto a new book tonight. I am planning to read everything I can get my hands on to help me get my thoughts right and tackle these weight issues once and for all. This book is about mindfulness. I know what to do. I need help with staying with it and stopping the self-sabotaging actions and thoughts. So I don't think I need another WFPB doc book, and I can revisit any of the ones I have if I want to reinforce the whys.

B - ezekiel toast with a smidge of PB
L - the greens soup, an apple
D - big ol' salad, some of the cooked spiral veggies, a wasa cracker
    S - peanut butter pretzels

About the pretzels. I stopped and thought about it. Decided yes I really did want some. Counted out exactly one serving. Made myself stop what I was doing and sit at my desk eating them slowly and mindfully. I didn't even want the last few of them although I ate them anyway. But I sort of thought that I didn't enjoy them quite as much when I wasn't mindlessly popping them into my mouth one after another. Now, to keep that in mind next time I hear them calling.

I keep forgetting to take a picture of one of my salads with the spiralized veggies. They are so pretty this week.

Nance, hope you are feeling better and your first PT went well.

    Hi gals

How did your first physio appt go, Nance? Hope you are managing okay with yours and Lulu's needs.

It's a testing week at work so I'm testing our software for newly introduced bugs from the latest update. That takes 2 or 3 days, depending on how the testing goes and how good I am at staying on track. It can be very repetitive but since my shoulder is sore and I can't work on my creative projects anyway, it isn't so hard to get into.

The bra that I got that clasps in the front is super hard to do up and is actually harder on my arm/shoulder than my normal bras. I have yet to actually wear it. I suppose if it is harder to do up, it may also be harder to spontaneously come undone. I may never know...here's hoping LOL

Would love to see your pretty veggies, Mihani! I just might get inspired to find that spiralizer I purchased.

food plan is a repeat of yesterday. I ended up having some snacks yesterday and not mindful ones. I better get into that book soon! Probably Thursday so I can finish up with a few books I already have on the go.

My day is a repeat of yesterday as well. I seem to be falling into a pattern of pretty much eating the same things Mon through Thurs because it's easy and everything is prepped. Friday through Sun I do some cooking and eat a little more variety but still get in my salads.

Too bad the new bra didn't work out, Carla. I always seem to have trouble finding bras that are comfortable and fit right. Good luck with your testing.

Here's tonight's salad. Big pile of lettuce topped with purple cabbage, radish, yellow and red peppers, and spiralized zucchini, cucumber and turnip. I had no idea until about a year ago that raw turnips are really sweet and yummy. Dressing is miso ginger with a sprinkle of toasted sesame seeds and ground black pepper to finish it off. Seriously good salad but if I had remembered to get green onions it would be perfect.

Wow, such a pretty salad! I haven't had raw turnips in a long time, but they're good. I went through a phase as a kid when I was really into them, and my mom would cut a turnip into sticks for me as a snack. I'm going to get one with my next grocery order.

My fitbit arrived yesterday afternoon and I wore it for our last walk of the day. So far I like it. Simple interface and some data to look at. Most of all, I think it will help me increase my steps. I'm going to wear it a few days to see how many steps I get in before I set a goal. I want to have it realistic and motivating. How's your new fitbit, Mihani?

Same old, same old with food plan. Eat healthy, and between that 10 or 11 am to 4:30 pm window. Once again, I had a date nut snack that is healthy but more calories than i should be having. It would be fine if I didn't eat so much of it. How Nance manages to have one cookie a day, I just don't know!

Speaking of...where are you Nance? Hope you're doing well recovering. Day 2 of physio I think?

    Mihani Posts: 4,102 Member
I am worried we haven't heard from Nance as well, Carla. I hope you check in soon, Nance! We're thinking of you.

Carla, I have a goal of 7500 steps a day. I have not met it most of this week because my knee and shin are still feeling pretty nasty after my fall off the treadmill. Before that I was getting to 10,000 steps most days but I made my goal 7500 because I wanted it reasonable. Regular old day without any intentional walking I generally only get to 4000 to 5000 which is pathetic.

All the praise to raw turnips! LOL

I have made doing just 10 or 15 minutes of mindfulness/meditation a priority in my life. I came home and worked some more, taking a break to say hi, then I'll get back to work for another hour, then mindfulness! It's funny though my dog loves my meditation pillow and cushion so I have to clear his chew toys off every time. Silly mutt.

You don't need a meditation pillow and cushion to do mindfulness, but I was invested in it for a while and got them. I actually have a spare bedroom set up as my meditation/yoga room. There's very little in that room just a couple pieces of furniture, my yoga mat, and the meditation cushion and pillow. It's a very serene space to do this, which I ignored for a few months when I let work stress get me crazed. I have realized that this has to be done especially when I'm stressed and busy.

Why is it so hard to learn to take care of ourselves?

B - ezekiel toast with a smidge of almond butter
L - eat your greens soup, 2 wasa crackers
D - sweet earth general tso's tofu entree (not a total fail but not a great WFPB option has oil and too much sodium)

I note the utter lack of fruit today. :(

    Tomorrow will be better! :)

I guess I need to get into a mindfulness routine as well. My fitbit has a log for it, and I think the new book is going to cover it as well.

Now that Joe and I both have fitbits, in the morning when we ask each other how we slept, we respond with our sleep number instead of a comment. Cracks me up. How'd you sleep? '82.'

I started our book club book yesterday while walking on the TM. It's already helping because I stayed on the TM longer to finish up the chapter ;) I will start on the 'paperwork' today. I'm going to try reading each chapter the first time on the treadmill, then going back the next day to skim over again and do the work.

Looks like my TM walks are better exercise for me than our outdoor walks, at least as far as steps and fat burn. Since it is even and smooth, I'm sure it isn't working all the little balance muscles near as well, but I tend to go longer and because the adjustments are so easy, I can change the intensity with speed and/or incline to keep myself working at what feels like a good level. I guess I already knew that, but I like having the data. A daily routine with both is probably the best.

    b - smoothie
    l - apple w/ nut butter
d - i forget what we planned when we did our grocery shop.

hope you have a fruitful day, Mihani

Carla, I will re-read Chapter 1 and get to the homework. I'm reading 10% Happier right now too. It's about mindfulness although the first few chapters are more his back story and a friend of mine said they have to do that to build credibility why you should listen to them. LOL

But I am quite enjoying this book. Good sense of humor.

I like the sleep reports from fitbit. I find it fascinating honestly, and a bit creepy.

I don't feel well today and one of the other gals in the office was exposed to covid last weekend. She is fine, and has been wearing an N95 mask all week, and I may just have my usual January/February cold that I seem to get every year, but I'm not happy. I didn't get to the office until 10:00 and left a little before 4:00. I'm going to bed here in a few. I ate some red lentil kale soup from the freezer supply. It's full of great healing spices and greens. Just stuffed up and scratchy throat. Ugh. If I still feel icky tomorrow I'll work from home most of the day and just go in to go through mail and drop off/pick up files.

But I remind myself the flu and colds are still a thing! Not everything is Covid.

B - ezekiel toast with a smidge of PB

Oh no, that sucks, Mihani! I hope you're feeling better in the morning.

I downloaded the worksheets but didn't fill them out or skim through the chapter again. I will get it done tomorrow early in the day so it happens!

got in my walks today, but strayed from my evening fasting. darn it! need to get into that book and put a system to work

    tomorrow is a new day

okay, finished my balance sheet, affirmations, and letters from Step 1. I didn't mind doing these. The examples were helpful, and I was able to knock it out in not too much time. I didn't like rereading the chapter so soon after, so I will either bookmark the sections of the book that have 'homework' or read another book on the treadmill and read through this one and do the homework at the same time.

I went on my usual walks with the dogs yesterday, and because it wasn't a testing day at work, I naturally got in more steps. Took the day off the treadmill due to a sore knee and some blisters...didn't want to overdo it. I'll do a TM walk today.

    How are you feeling, Mihani?

My Dad has covid, but he was vaccinated and isn't feeling too bad. Like a mild flu. My brother and niece had covid a few weeks ago. Doug lost his sense of smell and taste, but said they are coming back slowly.

Carla, I have talked to SO many people lately who have covid in the past few weeks. Literally dozens. Most of them say the same. Like a really bad cold. Everyone who is getting it is vaxxed and boostered. So I think we're all going to get it eventually. Except maybe you and Joe in your idyllic setting. LOL

Today the other gal who works in the office, whose husband has been sick, said he tested positive today. So I think we're doomed in the office.

I don't feel too awful today though. I did stay home this morning to work which was good because I had some fussy things to work on that I have been trying to get to since Monday without success. Got 3 of them done and only 1 more to go, then on to my usual crazy work crap. I went to the office "for a few minutes" which turned into 3 hours of course, but I'm heading to bed again as soon as I have some soup.

You are WAY ahead of me. I have been sleeping quite a bit and haven't done any of the worksheets yet. I will get on that tomorrow morning so we can keep up with each other.

Nance, where are you? I'm getting really worried about you!

I just went and looked at some PMs that we had back and forth a year or more ago because for some reason I thought possibly she had sent me her cell phone number at one time and I could text her, but I don't see anything :(

I did see that she signed those Nanc and not Nance. I think I started that misspelling of her name that we've been using all this time. LOL

Hopefully we'll hear something soon, but I'm kicking myself for not getting her number before her surgery.

I'm still feeling a little blah but better. Not as stuffed up and tired as yesterday. I'm going to take it fairly easy today although I'll get some work done throughout the day. Also going to revisit the first chapter of BPWL and do the first set of worksheets today so I can catch up with you, Carla.

I had a little splurge last night. Made Dreena's mac oh geeze. It's not that bad as the sauce is made from cashews, almond milk, lemon, spices and I use whole wheat pasta and leave out the oil. I ate a very reasonable serving and had a salad with it.

This week is taco salads again. That's really my favorite I think, but I keep mixing it up so I don't get bored with my salads.

Laundry going. Figured I'd get that out of the way first thing. I have two loads of clothes to do and will do the two loads of sheets and towels tomorrow.

    Plan for today...
B - ezekiel english muffin with a smidge of almond butter, an orange
L - mac oh geeze and cooked veggies (kale, dandelion greens, onion)
    D - taco salad

I think I mentioned before, my dressing for taco salads is bean and corn salsa. A can each of rinsed and drained pinto and black beans, a cup of thawed corn, a big jar of salsa, fresh cilantro if I have it, voila!

  • Carla_wfpb
    Carla_wfpb Posts: 1,372 Member
Ugh. Reloaded and lost all of my text.

Joe has been craving mac n cheese lately, so the mac oh geeze recipe comes at a perfect time. I'm going to add a head of broccoli in there since it's been a while since we've had some.

Sorry, Nanc! I vaguely recall you using Nanc at some point. I blame Mihani LOL

I haven't read the next chapter in BPWL so you have time, Mihani.

So far I like having the FitBit and it helps me add steps to my day. It hasn't helped my food any, sadly. I will have to count on help from the book for that!

I have mostly slept today, read a bit of a new book, 10% Happier. It's about meditation and mindfulness. The guy has a great sense of humor so I'm enjoying it.

A friend of mine said all these books you have to go through the first few chapters where they build credibility why you should listen to them. This book definitely falls in that category, but his sense of humor makes it more tolerable than some books.

Ohhh... adding broccoli to the mac oh geeze is a great idea. Will do that next time! I toast ezekiel bread in the oven while it is preheating and put in the blender to make into bread crumbs for the topping. I'll admit that it is better if you add a little olive oil to the sauce but not necessarily the full amount in the original recipe. Dreena is on the no oil bandwagon now but her older recipes use it.

Been sleeping quite a bit again today but feel like I'm pretty much back to normal now. Still a little paranoid with having both of the other gals in the office with family members having covid. Going to work until bedtime and at least get through some of this stuff I have here at home. I'm planning on working from home tomorrow afternoon as well.

B - granola with almond milk, an orange
L - mac oh geeze and cooked greens
D - taco salad, a couple pieces of date and coconut natural delights

My meals were all early today and not going to eat again until tomorrow morning. Might have a cup of tea later.

just a quick note...doing ok...it's all about pt and getting that bend going...painful, but painful with purpose.

see surgeon tomorrow...two weeks ago today was surgery...wow! I am happy with where I am ... now just to get the swelling down so I can bend further..

    hope you all are ok...
