It seems like it’s been awhile since Helene checked in. I hope all is well with them. I think they are back on the Cape by now.0

It’s been a month since Helene posted. I’m a little worried about her.
We took dinner over to my friend whose husband was injured at the gym almost a month ago. He shared more of the details of the accident, and I can only say he was extremely fortunate. He definitely could have died, or been left a quadriplegic, but now expects to
make a full or almost full recovery. When he fell, there was a doctor working out next to him who immediately took charge. Some of the staff were trying to move him or help him up but she forcefully told them no, don’t touch him until we get him on a backboard and a cervical collar. Had she not intervened, he would be facing a very different outcome. I offered them a choice of 4 different menus and they chose the comfort food option — meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans, rolls and brownies. Since they live about 30 minutes away from us, I simply prepped the meatloaf but left it uncooked. The mashed potatoes were done ahead of time and could be placed in the oven with the meatloaf to reheat. I bought a steamer bag of frozen green beans and frozen rolls, and the brownies were from a mix, so it was really a very easy meal to make for them. They and their adult son who is temporarily living with them, were very happy with the meal and even requested the recipes for the meatloaf and potatoes.
Next week I’ll be getting ready for my road trip to Ohio with my sister and niece. I’m leaving Friday and will be gone a little over a week.0 -
I just got home from a routine checkup with my hand surgeon. He is pleased with the progress, slow though it is. He is leaving his current practice group, but is staying local so I plan to follow him to the new practice group if they accept my insurance. I’ll see him once more in July at the current office and by then his new partnership should be official. I was worried when I was first notified that he was leaving as no information was provided about whether he was staying local. The letter came from the hospital and they, of course, wanted me to transfer to one of their other providers. If he were leaving the area I’d have no choice, but since he will still be local I will try to stay with him. I can’t imagine an orthopedic group not taking Medicare, so I’m pretty confident that it will work out to stay with him.
I’m sure a good percentage of ortho practices is senior hips and knees. And most patients would have Medicare. I have creaky knees. When I bend to pick up anything from the floor, I hear lots of crackles and pops. So far I don’t have pain. I came back to weather more like April than June. We’ve been in the low 50s this week with rain and wind. My knees were aching as I did my shopping. I’m chalking it up to the weather rather than my knees getting worse.
Pam, that’s great news about your hand improving. And being able to stay with your doctor is huge. While we were in FL, we tried to schedule an appointment with one of DH’s specialists. I called and got a messages the practice had closed. I search around to see if he had gone with a different physician group but found nothing. My next thought was maybe he’s dead. When we went to see DH’s cardiologist, I was talking to his PA. I mentioned the missing doctor and she was a former patient. She said she’d heard he went back home to Egypt. She gave me the names of two other doctors practicing in the same location. The first opening was December so I booked it. She said she got a letter about him leaving. We never got it but since we were later than expected arriving in FL, some of our mail was returned to sender. I guess the temporary location had limited space so they only held mail a few weeks and then returned it. The worst part was I didn’t realize any mail was missing for about six weeks.0 -
I didn’t realize how long it was since my previous posts. Between finishing up hurricane repairs, packing and driving home, about 5 weeks went by without me posting. No wonder you were concerned about me.0

Your friend’s husband is very lucky. He might have gotten a brain bleed from the fall and that can have fatal results. DH took a fall a few years ago. He was putting leaves in a barrel and thought he could get a few more in if he put his foot in the barrel to tamp them down. He lost his balance and hit his head on the drainpipe. He had a scheduled checkup the next day and when the PA asked if he had any falls since his last visit. He told her what happened and she told him he could have a brain bleed. We we’re leaving for FL the next day but she pulled some strings and got him a cat scan at the hospital the same day. He was okay but until then, I didn’t realize how dangerous hitting your head could be.

Pam -how lucky to be working out next to a doctor. How often would that happen??? I'm glad he expects to make a full recovery.0
-
Helene - you had a LOT on your plate, that's for sure! Sorry about the April weather. We're more having July weather (try 91 degrees on a recent day).0
-
I'm trying the Prolon fast mimicking diet this week. We'll see if I make it 5 days. Today was day 1. I've got a cardiologist appointment coming up and I thought sticking to this would be good discipline! We had a cat show this weekend. I actually did pretty well with food but it doesn't seem as disciplined when you're working a show and are out and about.0
-
Helene, it does sound like you had a lot going on. Were y’all able to get all of the repairs from the hurricane damage completed, or will there be more to do when you go back for next winter? I know it can be slow going when you have to wait for materials and labor.
Maryanne, good luck with the diet. I haven’t heard of that one. How does it work?
I’m down 15 pounds now. I’m hoping to lose another 10, but we will see how it goes. This upcoming trip will likely be a setback for me since we will be eating out a lot, and when we aren’t, I will be eating whatever my hostess has planned. I don’t want to be the kind of guest that dictates the menus, etc. I’ll just do my best to exercise portion control and make the best choices I can. I can always get back on the straight and narrow when I get home.0 -
This Prolon thing is supposedly scientifically proven to mimic a fast. It has 1150 calories on day 1 and 850 calories the next 4 days. I just figured it would be something different to try to kickstart my weight loss again. So far I'd have to say that what I'm eating tastes terrible. I guess you're not supposed to care about taste? The food is soups and bars. It also comes with something you're supposed to drink days 2-5 and lots of tea bags. Oh, and also kale/coconut crackers. Plus some supplements of some sort and olives which I refuse to eat.0

I have to confess, though, that after my cardiologist appointment I do plan some good eating for a week or so. Hopefully I can keep it to a week!!!0

Maryanne, that diet sounds grim. A friend stayed with us in FL about six weeks. He was a huge help in rebuilding the stairs. He had a number of friends on the island who helped with the heavy lifting. He’d call one and he’d come over for a couple of hours to help. They were digging Post holes, putting 12 support posts in the hole and then putting stones and cement in the hole to make a stable base. He was doing a fasting diet. He didn’t eat until after 2 o’clock and then he’d eat normal meals for the rest of the day. He was also swimming laps and riding his bike. The heavy lifting also counted as exercise. He lost about 15 pounds while he was with us. His Siberian Husky, Maggie, was also was our guest. She was very friendly and DH was her best buddy before they left. I don’t think I could have done the fasting. I like breakfast too much.0
-
Here’s what the stairs we built looked like. DH installed the white railing himself
Because our friend thought it was too nitpicking. Each segment had to be precisely cut and put together. It wasn’t as bad as he thought it would be. The wood railing on the stairs are temporary. They’ll be replaced with white railings to match the deck. We just ran out of time to do it this time.0 -

This what the original stairs looked like after Ian. The storm ripped them right off the house. A friend used a ladder to get up to the front door to check the house. No water got in the house. He opened the back slider and unlocked the storm door on the lanai. That’s how we went in and out the house until the new stairs were usable.0 -

Breakfast is supposed to be such an important meal!
I'm disappointed in the horrible taste of these items AND in how low the protein count is. I suspect I'm not going to make it long past day 2. Maybe I'll save the other days and do a day now and them. I'll probably switch to Optavia for the last 3 days; very low calorie; very high protein; and they taste pretty decent!0 -
The diet I’m doing is 1,000 calories per day and they are supposed to be allocated as 30% far, 30% protein, and 40% carbohydrates. I’m staying at or below the calorie count, but I don’t always get the allocation correct. I do find that sometimes I feel very weak, especially after my shower while I’m trying to dress and deal with wet hair. I prefer to do my shower before eating breakfast, but I may have to change that pattern to get some food in me for energy before I tackle the shower.
Helene, the new stairs and railing look great. It sounds like your friend who stayed with you were very helpful. Not a very relaxing time this year for y’all!0 -
I've decided to switch to Optavia for the rest of the week. I do 5 meals of about 110 calories each with 10-11 grams of protein each plus vegetables plus 1 or 2 protein servings! Doesn't taste bad at all and MUCH more filling than this prolon "stuff". I buy it on ebay since I have no interest in "coaching".0

DH saw his local primary care physician for a checkup today. Everything looked good. He’s also been to the eye doctor and had an echocardiogram. He has a stress test next week prior to seeing his cardiologist mid month. She has him do the tests about ever two years to monitor how his heart is doing. And we both see the dentist this month. June has become medical month for us. We schedule most appointments in June to give us flexibility in when we have to travel home from FL. DH has doctors in FL to follow him down there because we stay about six months. If he has any problems while he’s away, he has doctors to consult during the winter. I’ve used urgent care for myself a few times but didn’t feel the need to have doctors for myself in FL.0

1000 calories is pretty low over the long term.0 -

That's great that he seems to be doing so well!!!!
I have doctor appointments scattered throughout the year I must confess. No particular rhyme or reason to it.0 -
Just got an email from ancestry.com.
Seems they now want me to know that my dna says I'm not a picky eater.
Say what?0 -
That sounds like something they made up. How could they know you’re a picky eater? Plus I don’t think you are. We all have foods we like or dislike but you don’t strike me as someone who has extreme dislikes.0

I guess they can claim they "see" most anything in your DNA but this one did seem a little "out there".
I'd probably put myself in the middle of the picky....not picky continuum.0 -
I’m enjoying my time in Ohio, but ready to head home tomorrow. We will probably spend the night in Springfield, MO and then have a shorter drive on Saturday. I think today we are going antiquing. Tuesday night we went line dancing and last night some long-time friends of the family had us over for dinner and game night. On our nights at home we have watched a Prime video documentary series called “Shiny, Happy People” centering on the Duggar family (of “19 Kids and Counting” fame) and their involvement in the Bill Gothard Institute in Basic Life Principles. It was fascinating. I highly recommend watching the documentary, even if you aren’t interested in the Duggar family.0
-
I’ll have to check that documentary out. I saw it pop up on Prime but probably wouldn’t have watched it. I was never a fan of the Duggar’s lifestyle. I’ve seen stories about some of the younger generation rejecting the family lifestyle. It seemed like they were shunned by the family that stuck with their fundamentalist beliefs.0

I think many of those religions are big on excluding the world -Mennonite/Amish where I grew up; Mormon out west. And if you aren't part of them you are shunned. I watched a lot of the episodes of Escape from Polygamy. I wondered sometimes if it was exaggerated but haven't taken the time to do much reading about it.0 -
I fed the colonies this morning and then drove north to check out where the PET ER and specialists moved to as I have to take Smokie up July 5. It's about 22 miles. Not a bad drive today but I think it could be bad on a weekday early in the morning when I have to take her. I may take a back route. It will take longer but may be less congested.
I've been futzing around off and off all weekend with trying to get CROM set up online for bulk mail. Apparently they have decided no more showing up with paper forms. I can't see how much time this is going to save them. And of course everyone hires the lowest bidder for any programming project so it's buggy as heck. But I think I have the first steps completed successfully. Finally!0
