It is a sad commentary on the state of our world that firearms can be part of our running gear. But one must do what is necessary to be safe.
Agreed. My husband keeps telling me that he wants me to run with a gun.
My stomach isn’t feeling great this morning, so I only ran one mile to keep my streak going. I think I have been eating heavier on vacation than I normally do, and that is making me feel bleh. We’re supposed to have dinner with friends at a nice steakhouse tonight in Tampa, so I hope whatever it is eases off by this afternoon.
February miles: 45.99 (Do you guys know how aggravating to see that I am .01 off?!)
53 Day Streak7 -
Hiked up this peak today and I don't really recommend it in winter. The ski slopes interfere with the trail, rerouting to avoid it was a bad idea (should've just braved it, went through the overlap in the fence, waited for a break between skiers, and ran across BUT I DIDN'T), and I had to backtrack a couple times, crawl up along a big fence and hang on to it with one hand while taking one step up at a time and steadying myself with a pole in the other hand, and then dodge ice and skiers at the very top. The view was nice, but when I tried to figure out how to get back down (the way I came was not advisable), there were ski routes in my way and as I was trying to figure it out, I looked over and saw a ticket machine next to the entrance to the lift... and decided to ride it down instead 😆. There were 2 lifts to get down, it cost me 38 PLN (about $10) and was worth every bit of it. There just wasn't going to be much training benefit in fighting to find footing for 7 kilometers all the way down, unless my goal was to beat myself up.
Hint: it wasn't.
More pics, wasn't as much visibility as when I was here in early November.
I'm very happy that I can look out the hotel window and know I made it up there on my own 2 feet, in wintery conditions.8 -

Been a bit off the grid because I went camping and I hadn’t totally gotten caught up before I left for that trip. Adding 5 runs today.
The most notable was a trail run at a state park I went camping at. It is a small park with only about 6-7 miles of trail when everything is open and 1 of the trails was closed. So, I made lots of meandering loops to cover all the open trail in the park a few times. The trails were a pleasant surprise. Wide, well-maintained, and not really technical at all. Perfect for a long run. When I run on camping trips I don’t see a lot of runners. Usually just hikers, which makes sense for the setting I guess. Those of you on strava have already heard this story, but on my last big loop I passed this large hiking group (like 30+ people) for the 3rd time. As I ran past this kid said to someone in the group, “Is that person still jogging?” I looked over my shoulder at him and said, “Yes. Still!” I also heard a lady walking with her family as I finished up whisper to her husband, “Is that the same woman from earlier?!?” I don’t specifically remember them but at that point I had been out for about 2 hours, so they might have seen me really early in my run. Made me smile and feel kinda bada$$. In the world of running I am a totally average and unimpressive runner and I forget that to people outside of the running world, trail running for 2 hours seems like a totally crazy feat!
Trail pics:
Also, this morning I met up with my neighbor for a run at our place in the hill country. We are basically the only people that run out there and we happen to live about a quarter of a mile apart! She had an appointment so we met up while it was still dark, which I have never done out there because the roads are barely 2 lanes with no shoulders. But going with someone it felt totally safe. And it was nice to have someone to chat with! She is faster than I am, so even though I know she was slowing a little, I was kind of pushing my pace on the hills and ended up with a pretty good workout! It was fun and I hope we can coordinate some more runs when I am out that way.5 -
Morning all.
Well this week is definitely going to be recover week. I got my exercise bike back, so I'll be using it. Calf was getting very sore at the end of the day just walking around. So frustrating but that's life.
I'm planning a hike up our mountain in 3 weeks, so may postpone HM training till after the Hike. HM isn't till June so I have plenty of time. The mountain climb has been on the bucket list for years and it's great timing for it.
Actually it will be no netball for 3 weeks rather than no running since it was netball that caused the injury bahaha.
I also have to juggle running with other weekend activities, like skiing and hiking, and it's not always easy. You have to balance all the time...3 -
Nice running @Teresa502 . Especially on tired legs.
@polskagirl01 I'm sure your Polar Bear club was impressed. I would be. Hope the sauna was nice. Great job on your hike. That sounds very tough, but you made it. Love that you took the lift down. Congratulations. You area a beast. It's really pretty at the top.
Way to push yourself @Tramboman . Love that you have the different squirrels in your area. I think we just have grey squirrels around here.
@marisap2010 I'm impressed that you got out and ran while on vacation. I always plan to, but have a hard time actually getting out there. I hope you feel better by this evening. I do understand you're aggravation with the .01 miles. Next time you run, remember that and take those couple of extra steps. LOL
Beautiful picture @Aine8046 . Thanks for the good wishes on my doctor's appointment this week.
Hugs @Avidkeo . Good idea to wait until after your bucket list hike to start your HM training. I hope the calf is healed by then.
@kgirlhart It was @Teresa502 that asked about the holster shorts. I love it though. I'm glad you are taking precautions on your runs. Great job of pushing yourself to get out there and run when you didn't really want to.
@eleanorhawkins I have thought about trying to find a self defense class to attend. I feel relatively safe in my small town, but you never know.
@martaindale You are a bada$$! Glad you found someone to run with in the hill country. I figure running is like tennis...if you are going to improve, you have to play with someone who is a little bit better than you. BTW, I couldn't get your pictures to pull up.
2 -
I liked and hugged my way through several pages to get caught up with everyone.
@polskagirl01 I agree, you are a beast! And I love seeing all the cool places you go run and hike!
@rheddmobile Seems like you are figuring out how to tweak your meds to find a good balance. I’m sure you will nail it down and your body will make some adjustments of its own.
@shanaber That fall sounds painful! I hope you feel better soon.
@quilteryoyo I am glad to hear that waking up and putting your tights on helped you get your run done! Getting dressing first thing helps me get moving too. So many in this group have or are currently struggling to find their mojo. You’ll get there. You mentioned finding a new race for motivation. You mentioned a HM and if that’s the distance you want to do, great, go for it. But also keep in mind those shorter distances. They can be easier to find and tend to be more consistently available year round. I love mixing in shorter races here and there to keep things interesting and give me some end points for training schedules then picking 1 or 2 goal races a year that are longer.
@kgirlhart I feel like you see or smell so many skunks on your runs! I didn’t even know holster shorts were a thing. It’s like I know some people live in places where it is more dangerous in general, especially if you are alone, but I have never really considered that people actually run with a gun. I don’t know if I happen live in places that are just safe or if I assume they are safer than they are but it just never occurred to me.
@Scott6255 Sounds like your runs are getting easier again and I’m glad to hear it!
@Tramboman Love the wildlife reports. Sounds like spring may be coming in!2 -

I think you caught me in the middle of editing. I had to go into MFP on my phone to add the pics.1 -

Another 5 miles this morning. My weather app said it was 57°F feels like 53°, but it felt a lot colder. I wore shorts and a t-shirt and at the last minute decided to wear my sleeves. I should have grabbed my gloves too because I was cold and my fingers were freezing. It wasn't a bad run though. I almost ran into a skunk. I was running past the courthouse and he came from behind a hedge. He quickly turned around and ran if when he saw me, but we were only about 3 feet apart. He definitely started me. I think I started him to, but I guess he didn't feel threatened. I never smelled him either. I am definitely looking forward to a rest day tomorrow. I don't know if we will get the predicted wintry mix, but it is already 29°F, so it looks like we will definitely get the cold.
@polskagirl01 and @martaindale You are both badasses!
Re: running with a handgun. I don't feel particularly unsafe when I am running. But it does make my husband feel more comfortable about me running alone, especially in the mornings when it is dark. My biggest concern is animals. We have a pretty big problem with stray dogs here. And we are in a town, but still a pretty rural area so there are foxes, coyotes, rattlesnakes and my sister has told me that there is a bobcat near where I run on Sundays.

@polskagirl01 I'm so jealous of the mountain... but you can keep the snow and the cold water :-p
@martaindale your thing with the kid made me laugh, we did what we call 'storming the castle' last night, in other words, we run up the hill to the castle as hard as we can without dying a few times. Similar thing, on the way up on the last one we passed a family coming down and I heard a child's voice go "look at those crazy people making themselves suffer!" Took all my self-discipline to stop me from laughing out loud and having to stop.

I am so jealous of all the beautiful pictures and talk of spring-like weather. It's warmed up a bit here, but still too much snow on the ground for my liking. One of these years I will learn to embrace Canadian winters. Who am I kidding!?!?5 -
@martaindale I can see the pictures now. That is a very pretty park and looks like a nice place to run.
@kgirlhart I'm glad the skunk didn't feel threatened or it could have ended badly. You are doing great with your running.
@eleanorhawkins and @martaindale It is funny the comments people/kids will make. I had something similar happen last year, I think. The neighbor and his little girl were out in their yard as I ran by. When I turned to run out the road in front of their house, I heard the little girl ask her dad, "What is she doing?" I didn't hear her response. I like the think that I put the idea of exercise for fun and for life in her little heart and head.
@shesgotaplan Yeah. I don't think I could embrace Canadian winters either.
It was 69°F here this afternoon, so I went out for a wun on the driveway. I did run a little bit more of it today, but not quite enough for me to actually call it (or part of it) a run. I figure I should average at least 4.3 mph before calling it a run. I walked 0.25 miles, then wun 1.75 miles, followed by a 0.22 mile walk in 32:41 minutes for a 4.1 mph average pace. The wun part was 4.2 mph. My total was 2.22 miles, in honor of Twosday (2-2-22). Did anyone else do anything for twosday?

I'm thinking about purchasing a new Garmin - maybe upgrade to the Forerunner 745. Does anyone have any experience with those? I like the idea of having other satellites to rely when GPS is sketchy and the Ox Sat reading when sleeping.
I am considering signing up for the T-Minus 10 mile race at Cape Canaveral on Dec 10. It will be the first one and they plan to do it annually to celebrate the "birthday" of the Space Force. I think it would be cool to start with the first one and run as many as I am able to run. Registration doesn't open until May 4th (You know, May the 4th be with you. LOL) Since I worked there and that is where I met my late husband, and his family lives near there, I think that is a great destination race to look forward to every year. I don't know. Just throwing ideas around out there to get me excited and motivated about running.8 -
Sorry @quilteryoyo, I'm still rocking an old Forerunner 245. But the 745 looks great.
The Cape Canaveral race sounds fun.
@martaindale you really are a bada$$
Did 6.2 miles on the treadmill as another winter blast started coming through late this afternoon. Cranked it to 10 for the last 0.2 😁

I managed to walk 4.38 miles tonight then finished with a 1.14 mile run. I’m still slow while rebuilding my base, but I’m feeling stronger each time. I’ll just keep adding a fraction of a mile onto each run. I had considered resting today but the weather is expected to be rainy tomorrow. So I’ll likely rest tomorrow unless I decide to run in the rain.
@quilteryoyo We celebrated Twosday at work today by wearing jeans instead of professional dress. So that was a nice change of pace.4 -
@quilteryoyo that races sounds like a great idea!
I have the Garmin 735xt, which I think the 745 could be a new improved version, and for 2 years I've loved it. Battery is starting to die on me now and the HR monitir can sometimes be a bit silly, but I think no more or less than any other wrist ones.
I'm forcing myself to take the day off running today as I'm suppossd to be tapering this week and Monday's run was about twice as long as it should have been. Lord help me, and keep me away from the larder 😅5 -
@martaindale I love the trail pictures and that your bad@$$ery was recognized!
@eleanorhawkins hill runs up to the castle sounds torturous and fun, and the child's comment is oh so true!
I'm at breakfast, going to just take a short run on the 4k route I discovered 2 days ago. My big goals here have been met. (At least the ones I'm comfortable doing in winter.) If the lifts are running, I'll take the family up to where I was yesterday.
Happy running everyone!6 -
@Scott6255 I currently have the Forerunner 235, but I think it may be on it's last leg and I need a new wrist band. The strap broke, so I am currently using a rubber band to hold the end of the strap in place. LOL
@emmamcgarity You are doing great. It's always nice to get to wear jeans to work when you don't usually do so.

@martaindale and @polskagirl01, I love both of your pictures!
@quilteryoyo, that sounds like a great race!

Cloudy, mid 30s F, with a light snow driven by a north wind. Had neither strength nor energy today. Got to spend a little time on our running/walking trail, much of which has been buried in snow since mid January.6 -
We’re staying with hubby’s friends for a couple of days while in Florida, so the husband of the couple wanted to run today as well. I was moving a little faster than our planned 10:00 pace (I averaged about 9:40), so he asked to stop after 1.3 miles. I rarely run with others, so I need to pay better attention tomorrow. Oops.3

2/22 – 5.84 miles
Total – 85.41 miles
It was pouring rain early this morning so I ran at lunch today. It had warmed up to 64F with 81% humidity and a real feel of 68F. I started out in a long-sleeve shirt. About a mile and a half in I circled back to the office and thankfully, I had a short sleeve shirt in my locker that I changed into.

The best part of running with companions is pushing each other a little.2 -
Feb - 108 out of 100 mile goal. whew! Always tricky to predict what the heck it will be like to run in Feb. Supposed to get more ice after being 80 on Sun and Monday. Ran a PB 2 mile best of 8:44 min/mile pace yesterday after work. I am totally shocked because it seemed like for all my life I could NOT run after work. My legs would feel like lead etc. But I have done it twice now this month (my second sprint run) and it's been ok. Toughest part getting out the door of course. Ok maybe the first qtr is not fun either.
I am a loner running. I have PTSD from running in the military when I was always slow and could not keep up. If I run with someone and they try to "push" me I tend to rebel and stop until they are far enough ahead I can run my own pace. If they run "with" me it's enjoyable but usually they have to slow down for me.
I am still chasing Scott and Alpha in Run the World it seems. We are almost 150 miles behind pace so need to pick it up team!2 -

Maybe some of our new people would like to join our virtual group challenge? We're running (or walking!) "around the world" this year, and if you connect it to Strava, it does all of the logging for you. Don't be shy! Who's in?3 -

Maybe we could get @garygse and/or @julieannegannon to join in?
I think several of us (me included) are not running as much as expected. I had planned to have at least 5miles/run but that has had to be set aside for a little while. Hopefully I will be back there by March.
I went out for a 'fast' walk today. Fast at least partially because it was cold. It was 54F with a cold wind and at time threatening to rain. Got in a bit over 4.5 miles. This cloud (combination of the 2 pictures) was over us for a good portion of the outing and trying to rain on us unsuccessfully.I went by the place where I fell on Saturday and honestly I am puzzled. I have no scrapes on my hands or arms, one small bruise and scrape on my knee and the cuts on my face. How does that happen? I also hurt my arm falling on it outstretched, likely re-injuring the biceps tendon tear based on the bruising and the way it hurts.
There is snow from overnight on the mountains - down to 1700ft level!7 -
Beautiful pictures, @shanaber
I'm heading out for one more short run before we leave. I need to clear my head. Read a post from aquaintances in Kyiv that the explosions began a few hours ago. And then I turned on the news. We have a number of friends (mostly outside of Ukraine currently) whose loved ones are still there. I'm heartbroken over what's happening, but all I can do is pray and ask others to join me.11 -
