@shanaber Glad it wasn't worse. Take care of yourself.
@Avidkeo Definitely take it easy. I hope it heals quickly!
@rheddmobile I'm glad you were able to do the run without having an episode with your heart. I am sorry to hear that it is keeping your HR slower than you would like. I hope you are able to dial it in.2 -

Sunny, low 20s F, and a gusty wind from the south today. Heard more red winged blackbirds today and have started to see a lot more rabbit tracks. I think the boy rabbits are out looking for a little sumfin' sumfin'... It'll really be the start of spring when I smell my first skunk.
@shanaber Hope you recover quickly!5 -
Ouch @shanaber! That fall sounded painful 😣 Hope you heal quickly!
@Avidkeo sorry about your calf. But good for you on taking it easy after that.
@rheddmobile glad you got your run in and hope you get your dosage dialed in.0 -
@shanaber how awful. I run on the street because our sidewalks are so awful here with tree roots shifting them. I am sure you feel pretty broken today but hope something gentle works. Be careful with the teeth. There can be latent damage/cracks which show up in the coming weeks and months.
@rheddmobile I have another friend who is recovering from aneurysm surgery and ended up with random AFIB, Her Dr increased her dosage of beta blockers but to me that doesn't truly address her root problem. Interesting about your body (not just your legs!) not getting enough O2 when you are pushing by the drugs keep your hr down. Have you checked your O2 level at the top of a hill? would be curious.
@Scott6255 congratulations on a great long 15 miler. And best in 4 years?!!! WOW sounds like you are finally recovered from your slump.
Did 7 miles today. So I am at 94 out of 100 planned for the month. Unless we have "weather" I might even match my Jan mileage. I ran 5 then walked for 30 seconds and ran 2 more. Remembered why I had gone away from the racerback running bras as my back was really aching after the long run (for me). Also a bit disappointed that my shoes which do not have that many miles on them appear to be breaking down early.
@quilteryoyo you keep up with the group SO well. I can't follow just this one thread much less the added accountability thread. And even if you aren't running running you are getting some wuns and walks in daily so to me being active and doing what you can physically and mentally counts more than running mileage. Hope you get some good results from the testing last week. I don't recall my Dad having follow up to his AAA surgery but he probably just didn't tell me about it or I have forgotten.
@kgirlhart waiting to see how your long run went today with new shoes and pack! I think the humidity is creeping back up as it was a bit more of a struggle for me today than recently.

@Tramboman forgot to mention that yesterday was my first "skunk" route. I haven't seen any like @kgirlhart usually does but every once in a while I see them. I can see some of my annual plants starting some green shoots out but it will be spring for me once my Purple Martins return to my colony housing.4

It’s still freezing here at night but we have already had the first sign of spring - two nights ago at sunset I saw a bat!5 -
Morning
Calf feels better but a few "pulls" when walking. I'm not risking it. Id rather take a whole week off than end up out for 4 months again. So today will be rest day. Tomorrow will be bike, and I'll see from there. It might be over kill but a week off won't hurt and I would rather that than the alternative.
I was looking through my old insta and found out that one of my pairs of shoes are a year old now. I think that might be the issue. I've got a new pair a week ago but still have the others in rotation. I'm going to have to ditch them. I've been getting knew niggles for a few months but have put off buying new shoes as long as I could. Times up lol.
Glad I've still got my stationery bike5 -
I am in the mountains and loving it today! Took a "little" hike that ended up taking a longer than I planned, but it turned out that my family had found things to occupy their time and didn't mind my being gone for hours. It was around 15km/900m elevation. I got to go up my "favorite" mountain from a new-for-me direction, and it was a windy, wintery challenge. I then went in a direction I haven't been before and got to see the sights from that side. Very nice. Ski lifts are closed near where we're staying due to wind, but it wasn't too bad for most of my adventure. It did blow me over a couple times, but I more blame ice under the snow for that. I only wore microspikes for part of the time, because on one side of the mountain, the snow was sticky - perfect for making a snowman or giant snowball, but not when the snowball is accumulating on the bottom of your foot. I got tired of stomping it off every couple steps. Some places the ice under the snow was really slick, and some places it was just crunchy/grippy. But it was all very pretty and my 3 layers kept me warm.
The one picture is where someone was apparently pushing a bike(WHY?) on the trail, and was struggling with staying upright due to the hidden ice. They didn't make it very far, as there were equally fresh return tracks.6 -

I wanted to run some place different today so I drove to a rails-to-trails and ran 10 miles. I waited until 10:30 to start. It had warmed up from 19F when I got up to 38F at 10:30 and the sun was shining brilliantly. After the run I texted a friend and she joined me for a 4 mile walk. She’s 75 years old so we didn’t set any speed records but it was great to have the company and to catch up with her.
Nice 15-miler @Scott6255!
Oh my goodness @shanaber. That sounds like you hit hard. I’m so sorry for your fall. I bet you are really sore today.
Hope your calf injury isn’t anything serious @Avidkeo. Glad you are being smart and letting it heal. As a great runner on this thread used to say – let it heal until it feels better and then give it another day.
Congrats on making your deadlift goal @rhedmobile!
What beauty @polskagirl01! Glad you stayed warm.

@SummerSkier Great running. I'm interested in which bra you prefer for longer runs. I currently like the Y back from handful, but haven't run a lot of longer runs in them. They are comfortable though. I was able to see my "chart" on line and the results of the CT scan. To me, it sounds like all is well. At least I'm not worried that any other spot is growing. I see the surgeon this coming Thursday to talk to him about the results and I'm sure how I am doing. My biggest thing from the surgery, I think, is that the scar is still itching. Weird, huh? Thanks for the encouragement on the exercise. I know walking a mile every day is more than most. (Not here, but the population in general.)SummerSkier wrote: »@Tramboman forgot to mention that yesterday was my first "skunk" route. @Avidkeo I hope the week off is all you need for your calf to heal. You sure don't want to make it worse.
Very pretty @polskagirl01 . I can see how that would be a challenge.
Nice run @Teresa502 . And smart to wait until it warmed up. It turned out to be a very nice day.
I decided to do my normal Sunday mile walk on the treadmill in-between church and lunch. Walked it at 3.8 mph. After lunch, I took a nice long stroll into my neighbor's field to do a little bird watching for the Great Backyard Bird Count. I didn't see anything real exciting, but it was nice just to take it easy and notice nature. So far my bird species for the bird count are chickadees, Downy woodpecker, Red Bellied Woodpecker, Titmouse, Morning dove, Dark eyed Junco, Cardinal, Turkey Vulture, Robin, crow, Hawk of some sort, and ducks of some sort - the flew before I got a good look at them. I think I saw a thrush and some sort of sparrow too, but wasn't able to identify which one. Tomorrow is the last day, but I am working and leaving pretty early in the morning, so I don't know if I'll get a chance to see anymore of not.

Well, I'm hopeless on many fronts and just checking off the days left in February. I will spare you the boring recount of being completely over the wintry conditions and work nonsense. Suffice to say the miles are not piling up.
In good news I had a very relaxing day today sleeping in, going out to a diner for late (and huge) breakfast, and NOT going into work. I also didn't run, but Stella and I took a lovely long walk once the sun came out and it started warming up.7 -
@shanaber oh my! I hope you are healing from your fall. I’m glad to hear you didn’t break any bones, but it sounds like you got pretty banged up.
@quilteryoyo I’m glad you are getting wuns in.
I’ve been able to get a lot of walking and a few short runs in this week. Definitely feeling stronger and rebuilding some base miles. My neighbor called the other day when I was feeling lazy to invite me for a walk along the bayou. I’m so glad I decided to join her. We were rewarded with a beautiful sunset along our route. Photo below (I don’t know how to insert a spoiler, sorry)

I finally got a long run this month. It was just 8.5 miles, which isn't that long, but I was happy with it. It was pretty windy, but otherwise the weather was nice. It was about 55° so I wore shorts and a t-shirt. It was an uneventful run, but an enjoyable one.
I am thinking about running tomorrow since it us supposed to be 57°F and they are predicting a wintry mix on Wednesday and Thursday so it is likely that I won't be able to run one or both of those days.
@shanaber That sounds like quite a fall. I'm glad there were no broken bones. I hope you feel better soon.

Beautiful weather today, ran trails easy so no meds needed and my heart behaved nicely. Did 5k plus 1.5 miles, gradually increasing distance. According to Strava our last couple of trail loops at WC Johnson are the fastest we have ever run that particular loop, which seems unlikely, but then I guess we usually run it in summer when it’s just painfully hot outside, so maybe. Anyway felt good today, it was a nice run.
WC Johnson’s trail loop goes through the wetlands preserve. The frogs are convinced spring is here! I’ve been trying to learn to play different patterns on zills (finger cymbals) which usually involves a lot of syncopation with several different percussion instruments going at once at different beats. So to me today the different species of frogs reminded me of Arabic music, each one different and keeping its own beat, forming a complex pattern.
We also saw a buck with a big pink tracking tag around its neck, which I have never seen here before. It looked like maybe a two year old, with only a single horn - the other was a nubbin - with only two points. And it was very friendly, we noticed it because it had walked right up to a group of people on the boardwalk.6 -
Thanks all for the well wishes. I am pretty stiff today and have found things that hurt that I have no idea why, like one calf muscle? My face is still pretty puffy and pretty much a ness. I have kept pretty quiet today because it just hurts to move, heck it hurts to stay still too but not as much...
I am hoping I can get a better night's sleep tonight and maybe get in a short walk tomorrow. We have a cold storm coming in so temps will be dropping and should be nice. Also hoping I will feel well enough to go to agility tomorrow night if its isn't raining.
@SummerSkier - I also typically run on the street instead of the sidewalks. I have fallen 4 or 5 times over the last few years tripping on the uneven sidewalks. Yesterday there was traffic so I needed to be on the sidewalk and it was in a new area where I was not expecting the sidewalk to be uneven.
@rheddmobile - is there any chance that as you body gets used to the beta-blocker it will react more normally allowing your HR to go up? I had a similar issue with my pacemaker when I first got it until it 'learned' my requirements. I know it is totally different but just wondering if your heart will 'learn' and adjust allowing you to push further.
@emmamcgarity - what a beautiful sunset!
@tramboman - I have seen CA scrub (blue) jays along the trail but no robins at all. The rd wing blackbirds have not returned yet. We have finches all year round and doves. While I am not in Capistrano we do get swallows. They nest under the overpasses and when you run under them they all swoop out. I love to watch them!5 -
Yikes, been crazy busy for a few days and like 100 posts behind again. Skimming I see a lot of people who need hugs, so hugs for all!

@katharmonic So glad you had a nice relaxing Sunday and hope it rejuvenated you enough to tackle the week ahead.
Thanks @emmamcgarity ! Beautiful picture. Sounds like you are doing great at rebuilding your base miles.
Nice long run @kgirlhart . That's long for me too!
@rheddmobile So glad you had a good run and your heart behaved. The frogs are singing here too. Seems a little early. Maybe that means we'll have an early spring?
I hope you feel up to a walk and agility tonight @shanaber .1 -

Beautiful sky @emmamcgarity!
Tell us about these “holster running shorts” @kgirlhart. What is the holster for? A gun? Pepper spray?

Today I ran/hiked a little 4km loop around the hotel, which was a good wake-up for my legs. Later we walked as a family to a "waterfall" (I'd probably call it more of a spillway, but whatever). I was prepared with my swimsuit on, so got in the water for a few minutes (basically photo-op so I have something to send back to the club). Then I quickly got my warm clothes back on and we went to a restaurant for lunch before walking back. I'm thinking sauna and chill for the rest of today.6

Mostly sunny, upper 30s F, and a breeze from the south today. Made a conscious effort to run a little bit harder than usual; hadn't run this pace since early November. Heard a song sparrow in addition to the usual symphony of birdsong, and saw a fox squirrel and a gray squirrel.4 -
Oh no, @shanaber! I’m sorry for your fall, but I’m glad you weren’t hurt worse.
@rheddmobile, Good job on your 200lb deadlift! I hope you can get your med dose figured out soon.
Beautiful pictures, @polskagirl01!
Hubby and I drove down to Clearwater on Saturday. My in-laws unfortunately don’t live close to the beach, and we’ve had plans yesterday and today, so I have just run around their neighborhood before heading out for the day. The weather has been nice - about 50F yesterday morning and 60F this morning - and blue skies. 2.5 miles yesterday and 5K this morning.

Hahahaha @Tramboman !
Glad you got out early when the weather was nicer @Teresa502 . It was cold here, but no snow.
I had a CT scan of my heart this morning - a one year + follow up from the aneurysm surgery. I will see the surgeon next week for the results. I was very happy that the dye didn't make me feel really hot like it does sometimes. I had other things to do while I was out, so didn't get home until 4:30. I was really tired, so just did a mile on the treadmill. I did speed it up and bit and did 3.9 mph. It felt a lot faster than 3.8 mph. LOL
Thank you! Good luck with your doctor's visit!0 -
Morning all.
Well this week is definitely going to be recover week. I got my exercise bike back, so I'll be using it. Calf was getting very sore at the end of the day just walking around. So frustrating but that's life.
I'm planning a hike up our mountain in 3 weeks, so may postpone HM training till after the Hike. HM isn't till June so I have plenty of time. The mountain climb has been on the bucket list for years and it's great timing for it.
Actually it will be no netball for 3 weeks rather than no running since it was netball that caused the injury bahaha.10 -

I ran 5 miles this morning. I was tired and didn't really want to get up, but since it is supposed to be in the 20's later this week and possibly a wintry mix I decided to go ahead and run today. It was nice too at about 55°F. I smelled a skunk a couple of times, but never did see any. Usually when I see them I don't smell them and when I smell them I don't see them.
@quilteryoyo The holster is for a 380 Ruger pistol that I carry when I run. It's a pair of holster shorts. They work really well.
6 -
@kgirlhart I can never understand the concept of carrying a gun, let alone having special running shorts. We are so lucky in NZ. Heck we have a protest of government grounds atm and even the idea of someone having a gun on them is laughable.2

Snap, for those of us not in the US the gun thing just sounds so weird and unreal.
We went too far on our club run last night, new leader dude miscalculated mileage because he doesn't know all the routes yet, so we were chatting on our way back about feeling safe running off the beaten track at dusk or after dark. He bashfully informed me that he's a bit of a wimp and would be scared to run the trail we were on alone in the dark, I was like well, dude, imagine how women feel! He just went "huh, you're braver than me" lolol.
Seriously though, I do keep thinking about the safety issue. I chickened out of a self-defence course our local police ran last year because the equipment list they sent us included scary things like a plastic knife and a groin protector, but I think if they run it again I will bite the bullet and sign up.3 -

It is a sad commentary on the state of our world that firearms can be part of our running gear. But one must do what is necessary to be safe.4
