You are all just a lovely bunch of wonderful people. All. Don't forget it.My weight is quite up and I am feeling down. You can't go out to brunch and lose weight, if you are me at least.
I hope your job search goes well - it sounds like the one you took is not what you hoped for. So get picky and go for something better. You are totally worth it.
You will get back on that good track. Make those commitments you really want to stick with, and then say yes as many days as possible. One of my favourite jazz pianists always says "We do the best we can." Then he winks, and says, "Every D*** Day." Go for it.
@jane_76 in Eastern Ontario! Cool - @planemonkey is in the Gatineau area, and I am a ways east of Montreal. Then there are a bunch of Saskatchewan and Alberta people - we all get the crazy temperature variations. Why the heck do they call this the temperate zone anyhow???? Personally, I love the winter and you will likely join most of the team in shaking your head at my endless news of snowshoeing and getting all happy about the cold and snow. I want to go far north to see the auroras in January if I can. The colder the better!
It was a heavy gardening day here. All the garden is now rototilled, planted with winter rye, and raked over. Phew! And lots of practicing too. I think I'm skipping the exercise bike tonight, but we'll see...

@Kali225 No problem, I'll take you off and we'll be happy to have you back whenever you're ready. Bummer about the job but glad you're not settling... hopefully you can find something more suitable soon.
Steps are almost at 14K and I have a bit of time to hop on the bike on top of that. Gotta seize the opportunity as the week gets busy starting tomorrow!!6 -
@jugar - hilarious that you not only understand the cold I was talking about, you live (and love) it. I'm not anti-winter, but I haven't quite hit the "fully embrace" level yet. I used to love winter running, and I'm really hopeful to be able to fully enjoy it this winter. I may just give snowshoeing a try.
@planemonkey - hi, neighbour!
Today was a really good day. Managed to eat clean all day (first meal with a spiralizer - so fun!), got water/vits/supps in, and did Day 1 of C25K and my knee felt surprisingly good. It's my first "run" since April, so it's a big deal. I'm so hopeful that this is the start of my return to running. It was a beautiful night with the surprise of a blue heron fishing in a creek in the shadows. My playlist included a new-ish Beyonce song, "Break My Soul", and it's officially my new power song. So good.
I have no delusions that every day will be like this, but I'll take it. Consistency is my greatest enemy - a trip up generally isn't a day for me. Days. Weeks. Months. The big win from being on this team will not only be the accountability, but also the nudge to shake off the inevitable bad day and getting back at it (I hope).
Thanks again for the welcome, and I look forward to learning more about everyone in the upcoming days!6 -
@MoonlitMuse I read and followed some of the workouts in Strong Curves. I liked it because it gave me a workout template, well strength/resistance workout, since I didn't have one planned for me. It is a great full body workout with varying levels of fitness. I did the beginner one. My husband is really into researching what books a lot of people like and offer good, quality based exercise programs and this was the book he got for me. Let me know what you end up doing!4
-
@jane_76 glad you're willing to consider embracing winter more. Thanks to all the great stories @jugar shares about snowshoeing, I've looked into it and discovered my local library loans out snowshoes, and we have a dedicated park with forest trails for it in my municipality. Looking forward to trying it out this winter. Good job with the C25K training. I used to love joining the Running Room Wednesday night run clubs for that kind of program. I've always been a team sport person because I'm not a fan of suffering alone so joining a group like that really helped me commit to getting the miles in, especially as it gets darker and colder this time of year. When someone else is expecting you, it makes you less likely to back out, which is why a group like this can be so motivating and help with accountability. Keep it up!
@YinxFed so sorry for the loss of your dear friend.
@Kali225 sucks the job didn't turn out to be as awesome as expected. Hopefully the next one hits more on target. I'm totally with you on brunch... It's kryptonite.4 -
@YinxFed Condolences for the loss of your friend over the summer. Glad the memorial was in a beautiful place1

@MoonlitMuse I have used the Leaner, Thinner, Stronger book and the workout journal. It was a good start when I felt a little nervous to start lifting. Now I prefer the programs from Mind Pump Media a bit better.
@Kali225 That is so disappointing about the job. My husband went through that last year. It's hard to be really excited about something just to have it crumble before your eyes.
@YinxFed So sorry for the loss of your friend π’
@ jugar All this snowshoeing talk has me thinking about cooler days as well. We are ready with a full wood shed and the snow plow has been tuned up as well. Unfortunately it was 84 degrees F today π
@jane_76 Sounds like you have a great plan going! Keep it up.
I was up early and got my workout done. Macros were also on target until my husband and I went to Starbucks after dinner...oops π¬
I had my appointment with the physical therapist and he thinks my hip issue is really a low back issue. He had me do a back stretch and my hip already feels much better! It usually aches at all times. He said my hips are too flexible so that's interesting. He also worked on my plantar fasciitis and apparently the treatment is to be mean to it. I have never had muscle scraping techniques done. He used a metal scraper on the bottom of my foot. It's pretty aggressive and lasts 5 minutes...phew! I have a stretch and strengthen program to follow.
Today was a bit crazy at work. The new school year honeymoon period is over. I was trying to work with my student in his classroom while 2 children were literally crawling across the table topπ― Some other kids were spinning puzzle pieces next to us. It was just crazy π Next time I'm just going to throw a handful of m n m' s across the room to distract the little rascals LOL!5 -
Iβm a little late to the game this monthβ¦trying to get back on track as I kind of threw in the towel last week! I was working with a health coach for over a year, but am all done and decided to not continue as itβs time for me to put the information to work as I know what I need to do!! I think I had a moment of Iβm finally done, but Iβm not and have a long ways to go still! Getting back on track, I am out of town three days next week for work so that will make things a bit difficult but Iβm going to do my best! My focus is tracking the rest of this week and really making more of an effort to behave on weekends as I usually do great Monday-Friday at 5! π€¦π»ββοΈ6

@lauren_989 it's called "Overcoming Binge Eating, Second Edition: The Proven Program to Learn Why You Binge and How You Can Stop" by Christopher G. Fairburn
I'm only a couple of chapters in where he's talking about the different types of eating disorder, so I don't know how good it is yet, but a lot of it resonates.
@lauren_989 I'm about halfway through the book now, and still not at the 'how to stop' part, but I would recommend it! I keep having 'yep that's me' moments. Even if I get to the chapters about stopping and it doesn't help, I have a better understanding of BED now, and although I didn't really feel alone before, I feel comforted knowing other people feel/think/act exactly the same way.
I'm sorry the job is not what you hoped for @Kali225 - good luck for your job searching.
Congratulations @MoonlitMuse! I tried Thinner Leaner Stronger 5-6 years ago but didn't get on with it because I had 'issues' that needed an in-person assessment and training programme. I've since tried Stronglifts 5x5 and didn't get on with that for similar reasons. Of the two, I preferred TLS as I found it more interesting, though I understand why SL5x5 think you can restrict to very few movements and still get a full body workout.
@jane_76 our weather changes are not that extreme in the UK, but a 1 degree swing in any direction enough to have us complaining about the weather lol. It's one of our national past times
Sorry about your friend @YinxFed, I hope the service was beautiful and you have many happy memories of them.
@conleywoods now I have the fantastic mental image of all these kids scrabbling around the classroom for M&Ms

Yesterday was a nice balance of productive and chilled-out.
I had training before work and we were focusing on quad strength and activation from the bottom of a deep squat. After one set my legs were screaming, but it was only the first one I really struggled with as my quads woke up. One of the exercises was taking a 10kg dumbbell from the ground (as deep a squat as possible) to overhead, and my left shoulder is noticeably weaker, but I just about managed. We don't have any dumbbells, but I'm wondering if I could do the exercise with a kettlebell to play around at home this week.
I didn't walk at lunch time as I wanted to read my BED book, and I carried on reading for a bit after work and before bed. I also blanched and froze the parsnips, carrots and spring onions we'd harvested from the allotment, and re-organised my to-do lists so I have a plan for winter. I'm aiming to take it one room at a time to get things finished off, as I'll have 'mini victories' when each room is done and I can delete the list.
Today it seems I will mostly be trying to manage with the cats on my desk. I love them but sometimes... It's wet and windy so I don't know if I'll get to the allotment later. I think I'd better at least drive past to check the arches with the squash are still upright! OH is on shift this afternoon/evening, meaning I have the house to myself tonight. I'm having peach and chickpea curry out of the freezer, then I might try to tackle one of my room to-do lists, as some of them only have a couple of small tasks on.
Nothing overly exciting but right now, I'm relishing the routine.
ETA - we had a really nice curry for tea last night. We'd recently had a takeaway, and saved the leftover masala sauce, as there's always far more sauce than meat. I mixed that with chicken tikka I'd made (which is a yoghurt based marinade - that part is quite healthy at least!) and it makes a nicely balanced dish. I actually enjoyed it more than the original takeaway; wonder if they'd sell me the sauce in future?!2 -
Good morning WaistAways!
Weighing 178.6 this morning, so if I keep drinking my water and Doing the Things, I should be able to post a good solid loss this week.
My coworker gave me a whole bough (with a couple straggly roots!) of his pomegranate tree that fell in the storm the other day. He'd been keeping the bottom damp for me, so last night Whatsisface and I took new growth cuttings, pencil size larger cuttings, and then finally stuck the whole shebang into the ground with some root growth hormone just in case something happens. So now it is Pom-Watch 2022 in the Crusoe casa. Not the right time of year, not straight from a living plant, so we'll see if we get lucky.
I've clicked buttons, time for quick tags:
@Kali225 new job mojo coming your way!
@MoonlitMuse I've heard great things about a different program, called Renaissance Woman, from a few ladies I know who write substacks about lifting.
@YinxFed my deepest condolences. Take care of yourself during this time.
@jane_76 I totally get falling off the wagon being more than 1 day. The thing that sticks with me the most from this thread irl is the "one perfect day" concept. Maybe you're not doing super well, maybe you've got stuff going on, but you (I, lol) can commit to hitting your goals for this one day. And then you try again the next day. Very helpful to look at it a day at a time, sometimes, especially when you look at how far you have to go.
I tend to get impatient, wonder why my loss isn't quicker (I've done this... several times now, lol), but then a couple years later when I look back at my average losses (after I had given up and gained some weight back, lol)- they were reasonable the whole time. The noise was tricking me out. Patience, one perfect day, consistency. And yeah, being part of a community struggling with the same thing helps a lot.
Have a great day, everyone!

@lauren_989 good for you for tracking everything even when you don't want to, and for keeping it under control enough to lose at least something! Go Greens!3

Hi WA's .... One more new member joining your amazing team.... Please welcome @welsh_cariad3

Hello @welsh_cariad ! I hope you find your way here as soon as possible, and that we get you all set up for a great October.
Please be sure to let me know your weigh-in day, and if you can, your weight on that day from last week. That way we'll have a starting weight and this week can be a true week 1 when it is time to weigh in. Thanks!
If you have any questions or anything, just ask away.4 -
Evening all.
Today was a bit of a whirlwind. I had an afternoon leadership training session followed by dinner at a fancy steakhouse. I definitely overate but I also ate less than I could have (and drank less too!) Proud of when I ducked myself out of there.
Tomorrow Brad and I fly to Ontario. I know without a shadow of a doubt tomorrow is not a green weigh-in.
That's a sucky feeling, but I know I'll get back to my maintenance range. I do think I need to find ways to offset some indulgent days that I'm finding myself in so my net deficit is enough to lose.4 -
Hi everyone:
Today completely got away on me right from the beginning. Had one of those days where one minute you're eating breakfast and the next minute it's 5 pm. These kinds of days are generally a major trap for me - hunger and fatigue have me reaching for easy carbs with zero nutritional value, and then once I make an unhealthy choice, I decide to blow it big. This newfound community was in the back of my brain as I somehow chose turkey rollups (smoked turkey breast wrapped around red pepper and avocado) - definitely a win and a rare decision when I'm super hungry and tired. They fill me up and I honestly love them. I also made a maple oat latte at home which I like better than the easier drive-thru Starbucks I seriously considered.
My knee swelled up a bit after my first C25K run the other night, but my physio said that it's totally expected after my injury. I was super grateful to get the green light to keep at the C25K program, but with a lot of tools to keep the swelling and soreness to a minimum while my knee adjusts to things again. Hoping that with each run, my recovery will get easier because I've really missed running.
I really do credit these posts/this team with bolstering my follow through over the past few days. These are the early days, but I'm hopeful that it sets a foundation for success... including weathering the inevitable bad days.
Also, are there any tricks to keeping track of who has mentioned you in a post? I need to follow up on a few, but is it just a matter of scrolling through previous posts as you write yours? Sorry if this is a silly newbie question - I'm just marveling at how some of you keep track of six or seven mentions, so if there's a trick, I want to know. Lol. I will follow up on them tomorrow, but for now, off to bed.
Goodnight, WAs!5 -
Good morning Waistaways π
My name is Cariad and I live in Wales, UK.
I am married and I have 3 teenage boys.
I work as a chef. Very difficult job while on a diet π
Can Friday be my weigh in day, please?
Last week I weighed in at 230lbs π±π
My plan is to just give it my best week after week. One week at the time.
I have 100lbs to lose and it just seems overwhelming how much I have to lose π
Have a lovely Thursday everyone π6 -
@jane_76 if somebody tags you like I just did, there's the little bell icon in the top right which is notifications and it should show there. I don't think it does anything if you quote, though. Mostly I write as I read through the posts in between, but sometimes there are too many and I have to skip. Nobody will be offended - there are times when all of us post our own stuff without commenting on others - and if it was important, you'll be tagged again.
Welcome to the team @welsh_cariad! I can imagine working with food is very challenging, as you'll never get a break from it. There's a concept in this team of a 'perfect day'. This means everything is logged and within your calorie goal, any exercise and hydration goals are met. They tend to be great for a 'reset' when needed; realistically we're not going to achieve that 100% of the time, though!
I went to the allotment yesterday and as expected, one of the arches was down - on the strawberry bed! Strawberries all fine, squash all harvested (they're decorative/not edible, so I don't care about being under ripe) and the arches are out for dismantling tonight. I'll need a new plan for the squash next year, but I think if I get a third arch, I could use them (shortened - easy to do) to make the frame for the brassica netting, as the pipes we used were way too small this year.
I have started the BED recovery plan in my book. Step 1 is tracking food and drink (not calories); times of day, location, whether you view it as a binge, any purging (which I don't do), plus context and any comments. The book explicitly says to do it on paper, so I've got a week's worth of sheets printed out. My biggest challenge will be not trying to rush ahead; the slower I take it, the more effective the results. The book says that the majority of people with BED have a tendency to overeat generally, so weight maintenance is more likely than loss. I know where I'm starting from, and will be weighing weekly, but as loss isn't the aim I'm not sure if I'll post them here.6 -

Bye, bye green streak. It was a fun week filled with so much love, laughter, and food with family. I was so tired yesterday, I slept in until 6:40!!!! I am usually in the shower by 6. My weight might have been lower yesterday because Tuesday was a perfect day, but yesterday, I nachos and a cookie and our work potluck. Oh, well. It is my first day of fall break. It is cold and rainy. I might stay in bed all day!!! We want to watch the new Hocus Pocus movie.
@moonlitmuse I read strong curves years ago, but I don't have a barbell. A lot people really like him. I follow Brett on Instagram and love him.
@kali225 I am sorry that your job isn't what you expected.
@yinxfed I am sorry to hear about your friend. π4 -

Being a chef while trying to lose weight and keep healthy must be a huge challenge. And 3 teenage boys - that sounds like another one! I had one boy, and one girl who was more challenging during those years, and we all survived. They are some wild years, though. Giving your best week after week is how to lose 100 pounds, and there will be weeks that don't go so well. Stick with it and get inspired by our members who have lost that much @ashleycarole86 and @Terytha (currently on support team). Make sure your plan is realistic - keep experimenting until you find the things that don't work and toss them out.4 -
Sorry I'm a little late! No change here unfortunately!3
-
@CupcakeCrusoe I am in awe of your pomegranate. I want to grow them. It is certainly too cold here, but I'm jealous all the same. Keep us updated so we can live through you. I devour pomegranates when they are in season.
@DD265 that book sounds really good. I think most of us love to eat, eat plenty, and fight the binges, so we can all learn from this way of thinking. Probably the most important thing I have settled on in maintenance (10 years this month!!) is that I can eat very large amounts if it is very high fibre and mostly vegetables. I can have treats, days of indulgence, and those kinds of things as long as they are followed by a perfect day to help keep them from spreading. They are self-contagious, for sure. My perfect days must include zero grains (but not low carb) to work well - and that also helps keep both the quantity and quality of food high for the day. Thanks for sharing the info from the book!
I have a full day of running around like a crazy person doing errands, then a walk with one friend and dinner with another, so I'll catch you later!2 -
