I'm so sorry I'm late! I've been overwhelmed/busy and I had my marathon on Sunday. I had a lot of problems and have been in bad pain. Sigh.

Oh my gosh, thank you so much for remembering! I developed horrific leg cramps 9 miles in and I painfully shuffled for 17 miles. Don't let the smile fool you.8 -

Good morning! Please excuse me from this Saturday’s weigh-in. I’m traveling to NYC this weekend! Thanks!3 -
@lianatherunner Congratulations! Looks like a really nice medal too! Honestly, pretty good timing for a marathon, just days after Thanksgiving when your in carbo loading mode.
I see that you’re wearing a camel back. Did they have water support ? Or do you just prefer that? One of my favorite things about an organized race is someone handing me a cup of water every couple miles.
I don’t know if I mentioned it in this group or not, but last May I injured my shoulder. I saw an orthopedic and received a cortisone injection in July which helped a lot. The discomfort has been gradually returning over the past month and yesterday I did something, not sure what, probably carrying boxes, and was in serious pain. My marathon is in 44 days and I definitely won’t be getting all my runs in this week. Running doesn’t particularly aggravate it, it’s just ALL movement. Lol. I am feeling a bit better this morning. We are supposed to get a bunch of snow starting Thursday so we have a bunch of errands to do before hand after being gone so long. The ski hill opens Saturday so I’m hoping to feel like it by Monday. We figure it will be super crowded over the weekend and potentially dangerous with a lot of people and not much open terrain. Looking forward to skiing again.4 -

Apparently I'm holding on - stressing about both jobs, the holidays as I need to be done by 12/14 for my youngest son coming in from Atlanta and having Christmas get together and I feel like I have no time between working 2 jobs and being exhausted5 -

@lianatherunner -- Whoo hoo! A finish is a finish *high five*. I don't know how you managed 17 miles with leg cramps, omgosh, getting across the house with leg cramps is difficult. Congrats on the finish and 68,000 steps in a day is the highest I've ever seen anyone record! Looks like Seattle weather cooperated. Hope recovery is going okay and your getting the legs rolled out.
@LaurieWrobo --Oi' two jobs is a LOT of stress especially this time of year (not to mention people get grumpy in December!). I wish I had something to offer in support, probably it would be virtual hot chocolate and a home made cookie, but that's why I'm here ((hugs)) I hope it gets better and more manageable.

Not surprised, but not happy. I'm getting frustrated with the lack of results. Ive started doing OMAD, and am back to running (with an actual training plan). I'm really hoping to see results next week.6 -

Haha, I prefer to carry my own water. I like to drink every mile or half-mile, and I find the cups impossible to drink from. I do a lot of half-marathons through a small local company and they have gone mostly cupless (for environmental purposes) and suggest that people bring their own water. I'm just used to it at this point!

I’m getting dangerously close to the overweight BMI category so it’s time to get serious about tracking my calories and exercise. My goal is to maintain my weight in the middle of the ‘normal’ BMI range, which is about 125 pounds for my height. Today feels like a positive turning point. Best wishes to all for a successful week!5 -

Congratulations on completing the marathon @lianatherunner — Amazing! 🎉🤩🎉
Nice step count @JenHul and everyone participating! I’m glad to hear you enjoyed your trip. I’m trying to plan an escape from the cold weather later in the winter and I’m already excited thinking about it!
@murdog3t — You’re doing a great job staying’in the green zone’ of your daily goal! 🙌

Today I went and applied for a passport to travel to Japan. I've never had a vacation. Husband and I are going to attempt a trip to Saporro in May (Northern Japan). I'm really excited but nervous. I'm going to do better tracking my food and exercising as I really want to be able to hike far, maybe rent a bicycle and do fun things while in Japan. The city of Saporro is nearly home to more people then live in my entire (large) state of Oregon. I've never been in a big city before or around a lot of people, never road a train, never traveled internationally, never had to deal with a language barrier (I have been studying Japanese for two years - maybe in another ten I'll have a grip...) I hope to do my best to prepare

@Itadakimasu7 That is so awesome and exciting! Hopefully you will not get too stressed about all the new things you will experience. I am sure it will all turn out lovely and you still have almost half a year to work on yourself, you got it! I also know people always appreciate it when travelers try to speak their native language, so even with your maybe limited knowledge, it is going to make them happy.5

TL/DR version — For some reason I babbled on about holiday travel plans, maybe so I could get things straight in my head. Everything’s set now so please excuse my long, tedious post!
Holiday recap and planning —
My son was very appreciative when I drove with him to Charlotte, NC last Friday. The previous Tuesday, we drove through some heavy rain while traveling from Charlotte to our house in northern Virginia, so it felt safer to have two drivers. On the way back on Friday, the traffic was lighter than Tuesday but we drove into the blinding sun most of the way. Still, it was a much easier commute. We arrived in Charlotte about 6:45pm and everything went smoothly at the airport so I had no trouble catching my 8:30pm flight back home. My husband met me at the airport in Virginia and we were home by about 10:15pm. We’re fortunate to live nearby, just about 10-15 minutes along the pretty George Washington Memorial Parkway.
Although we only had a short visit with our sons, everyone enjoyed the break from our usual routines. My younger son said he had been feeling the ‘grind’ of his university studies and it was a nice relief to spend time with his local friends. We stopped on our drive north to pick up a friend (his best friends’ girlfriend) in Richmond, VA so she wouldn’t have to take the train the next morning. She’s studying to be a nurse and had a clinical training shift at the hospital on Tuesday. We arrived in Alexandria, VA about 9pm and I dropped them both off at their friend’s house. I guess they didn’t waste a minute of their vacation time! 😂 The next day, they all played pickleball, and went to the gym for some weight training. Then, that same son invited about 10-12 people to our house to celebrate his birthday.
He woke up early the next day, which was Thanksgiving, and ran the Turkey Trot 5-mile race with his friends. We spent a quiet day together for most of the holiday and then he was back out with his friends later that night. It’s a good thing we drove together on Friday because I would have hardly seen him otherwise! He left on Friday so he could attend a football game in Columbia, SC as his university’s team played their rival — the University of South Carolina.
I talked to both sons today to plan a more extended time together during their winter break, which includes Christmas with family in Boston and New Year’s Eve celebrations with their friends. I’m glad our flights are set and the travel plans are coming together!

@lianatherunner -- Congratulations on completing your marathon! Do you think you were lacking electrolytes? I understand electrolytes are especially important on long runs. I drink them even though I typically don't run further than 5k or 10k.
@SavageMrsMoose -- Good luck on your marathon!
I'm hoping to be able to run a half marathon one of these days. So far, in the last two years, I've run a 5k every other month or so and a 10k three times and one three-hour endurance run. I had planned on running a 10k right after Thanksgiving but decided against it due to a sore Achilles tendon. I'm hoping to be ready to try again on December 9th at the Summit Rock 10k that takes place among the redwoods in the Santa Cruz mountains. 🤞

Good morning Shape Shifters. I had a hard time falling asleep last night because I was mentally kicking my butt and making plans. I have spent a lot of the summer complaining about the sun and the heat, and now that the weather has turned, I am still not walking because I feel 'lazy' and it is wet and cold. It is such a dumb excuse. All the benefits from walking in nature still exist when the weather is bad! So I have decided for the whole month of December I will go outside for a walk every single day, regardless of the weather. I can dress for rain, I have clean clothes at home, I can do another load of laundry if needed. There is no reason at all to sit inside for weeks at a time. I also changed my fitbit step goal to 15.000. Although I have set this goal for December, my hope is that it becomes a habit and I can continue doing this in the new year as well.
We had a very chilly night here, dropping to around -5C (25F). I was looking forward to walking though, it was really nice outside with very little wind. We had a little bit of snow a few days ago, and there was still some left in the forest. I stopped feeling my legs half way through the walk, but otherwise I wasn't cold. It's too bad the new walking leggings aren't warm enough when it is freezing, so when I go again tomorrow, I will wear a pair of cotton leggings over them. Despite not having walked for a while, it went very smooth and didn't feel hard so I am glad not all my progress is lost. I will share some pictures I took with my phone. Happy Friday everyone5 -

I had my shingles vaccine Tuesday. I was told I might feel bad and figured it was good timing since I was resting a bit with my sore shoulder. BAD idea. I was so sick yesterday, fever, chills, nausea, and the muscle aches aggravated my shoulder pain tremendously. I was a wreck. So far, feeling better today. Hoping to exercise again soon. On the upside, I wasn’t hungry so didn’t gain, even lost a bit.
@pupowl Beautiful pictures!
@Itadakimasu7 you will have an amazing time in Japan.
@frankwbrown you will get your half marathon eventually. It’s about being the tortoise, not the hare. I ran my first marathon in 1998, but I probably sign up for twice as many races as I actually participate in. I think I actually like the training more than the race itself. I think half marathons are a great distance. You race so frequently you’ll do great. An a run through redwoods sounds beautiful. Not easy I’m sure, but beautiful.
@PatriceFitnessPal so happy you had a nice holiday with your sons. I was only with my son, not my daughter, who spent Thanksgiving with her fiancé and his family in Connecticut. I missed her, of course, but it as nice to have one on one time with my youngest. He also had to depart early to watch a college football game. IU football has been a bust and the coach was fired after their loss. Unfortunate, because he was well liked. His team motto was LEO. Love Each Other, which I found very refreshing. Unfortunately, in the big business of college football, you must win more games than loose them.6 -

Ugh, I just exceeded my max weight. My workload and schedule outside of work have been bonkers lately and it's not going to slow down until Christmas. Despite that, I am trying to log food as much as I can so that I can keep some awareness up of my intake. I am getting a reasonable amount of sleep and getting some shorter work outs in. I'm hoping this will be enough keep my weight steady for now until things slow down a bit and I can come up with a better plan.
I'd better opt out of the step challenge for December but will still aim to get 13K+ steps in a day.
Hope everyone is doing okay.4 -
Beautiful photos @Pupowl ! I'll be walking every day in December too. I don't find the cold too bad if I dress for it. It's the darkness that I find most unmotivating. I appreciate that some people have their Christmas lights up. I'm drawn to walk my dog along the streets with the most festive lights.3
-
@SavageMrsMoose Thank you! Sorry to hear that the shot gave you so much trouble. Taking a rest when those things happen is never a bad thing.
@pedal__power Thanks! I love the cold actually so that is also not a problem for me. It is really nice now, but we had 3 weeks or so with really bad winds and pouring rain all day which was getting pretty depressing. I had the same talk with my mom because she was also down from being inside with the rain, I told her to just go in the rain! So gotta take my own advice as well. I can walk whenever I want thankfully, so the darkness isn't a problem. I don't think I would enjoy walking the streets at night, though with a dog is already more fun! Good luck!3
