Today, I was back in the gym after 4 or 5 months away.
And boy did it tell. Will definitely need to incorporate a regular dry land routine in the gym to build up strength which hopefully will translate into more speed and stamina in the pool.
There has definitely been a deterioration in my gym form during my time away, and given my swim times have been trending up, gym strengthening should hopefully help me get even faster!0 -
AQ, do you follow a program in the gym specifically designed to support and improve you swimming times? Or a more general program? Mine is partly general and partly designed to complement swimming. For example, since I have a minimal kick swimming freestyle, I focus more on my legs in the gym to balance things out. But I've seen some swimming specific weight lifting routines and am thinking about doing that. I've signed up for a open water swim 'race' in July and may try to use my gym training to support that goal.0

Hi Robertus!
Yesterday's was just a general non specific one, and I've been away from the gym for quite awhile.
But I am actively looking for something I can incorporate specifically to assist my swimming.
Have come across one or two links.
Let me start a thread on that specifically!

Today 2 miles @ 81 min, 1@34+1@47
Good swim Stephen.0 -
Same as yesterday. 6000 total.0

1k of crawl, about 27 mins I think then another 10 mins of breast. Felt good, even if I was enjoying the turns a little too Much and turning them into breath catchers...best swim for a while, so i am pleased to be back on my version of form.0

2.5 km 54:50
It was actually a pretty good swim given that I was sore from gym, one leg was on the verge of cramping throughout, and I swam the first 1/4 of my swim an entire minute or more slower than I usually would, meaning the next 3/4 was faster than usual!
4 pillars that I concentrated on in the swim today, that I think I want to have as my core areas to work on over then next few weeks/ months.
1) Rotation - ensure its adequate and powering the shoulders forward to reduce stress on shoulders that comes with high elbow catch without rotation! Also to prevent under water crossover on the pull
2) Pull - ensure that it is LONG all the way back to the thigh while keeping palm flat and FACING back, and avoiding cheating and losing power by 'slipstreaming' the palm!
3) Posture - ensure butt and legs are up by the surface of the water throughout the swim (even when fatigued), and head down, and breathing facing towards the back.
4) Legs - even as feet are up, avoid scissor kicking!0 -
2.25km swim (longest ever for one session!) in about 65minutes. Swam another 1k continuous (this time without anyone crashing into me) in 20:40. I think my goal shall be to get that down to under 18:30, meaning an average of 55sec per 50m (which is slower than my pace on a regular, non sprinting 50). Also worked on rotation, getting my recovering shoulder above the water and reaching down more - this felt strange, but just need to get used to it.0

53 minutes. Lost count after first 800m0

Great swimming, everybody!!!!!
AQ - those pillars are a great foundation!!!!
No swim today, had to work. I'm out of the water until next Friday because my treatment week is next week. Just when I was starting to finally feel really strong in the water I have to take a week off, go figure......0 -

Been there and done that many times.
Some great swims/distances being logged by everyone.

40 min sprints.
25 meter time now roundabout 20 seconds (in the early parts of the sprints before fatigue sets in) down from around 22 sec earlier, so I'm satisfied with the progress!
Target time is probably about 15 sec for 25m and 30 sec for 50m so that I can cross the magical 1 min for 100 m mark. If that is even achievable, it's probably at least a year away!0 -

Yeah the rests during the longer swims bring the average time down.
The fascinating thing I find, is that when I am doing sprints, it actually takes me longer to cover a similar distance longer distance, then when I am chugging along at normal pace, even though with the sprints I'm swimming perhaps 25-40% faster than usual. This is due to the longer recovery periods in between sprints that the body requires, whereas with the long swims, I can move along with much shorter rests at much longer intervals!stephenrhinton wrote: »53 minutes. Not today, but yesterday did another 3 miles continuous, but did not keep track of my time. Resting today. Tomorrow I may try to combine some strength training with more swimming.0

easy pyramid today.
all free. 1000,2000,3000. About 10 second pause for a sip of MIO fit water between.0 -
51 minutes, half back, half breast0

52 minutes breastback ...didn't count laps but definitely a slower/easier day.0

1600 m Front Crawl and Breast Stroke.
A good day in the pool. Some of the People training for the local triathlon were swimming and so the average lane speed was a little bit faster than I normally encounter so I had to push myself to keep on cycle with the other swimmers and not be a lane blocker. Well and truly whipped after that swim.
Still managed to keep my End of swim 50 m sprint at 58 secs and my 100 m sprint at 2:20 - within 5 secs of my pb so I was pretty happy.0 -
There was a swim meet today, then family swim, so there was only a limited amount of time for lane swimming today. So I did strength training first, waiting for the lanes to open up, then swam a fast mile (30 minutes), followed by 18 100-yard 'sprints' for the second mile. That was exhausting. Remind me not to do strength training and swimming on the same day!0

Yes lazy day: 2 miles @ 72 minutes.0
