Hi all! I'm Kelsea and I have not YET had WLS, but I am in the process! I am 25, 5'10" and hit my all-time high weight of 266 3 weeks ago, though I recently dropped 7 pounds. I was never obese, and until my early 20's I averaged about 155-170 (drastic fluctuation) but I put on the pounds after two kids. I go Tuesday the 30th for the required seminar, and will speak to a surgeon afterwards but I'm estimated to be able to have surgery by early Jan. I'm looking for any advice and support during this time! I've got a lot on my plate with school, my kids and now moving forward with WLS, that I don't want to let myself falter!

Hello my name is Tiffany, I am very early on into the process. I have yet to have surgery. I have however been obese for as long as I remember and now that I'm 33 and have struggled so much to lose weight I am going through this process. I'm tried of not being able to do things most people take for granted. I have been going to the gym and tracking my food for over a month now went down ten pounds but now back up ten pounds in less than a week (I think it is water weight) gym wise I have been trying to find a workout partner but still have yet to find one

Hi!! My name is Kat. I had bypass on June 18, 2012 and have lost 72.5 lbs so far. It's been a difficult and emotional journey. I started gaining after high school and it never stopped. Tried every diet out there, as I am sure most people have. My husband and I want at least one baby, and I haven't been able to get pregnant because of weight and PCOS. Hopefully I can get pregnant before I get much older, That clock is ticking!!

I absolutely love this site, and all the support that comes along with it!!

    Hi Everyone,

My name is Angela and I'm hoping to have RNY next month. My insurance (Kaiser) requires that you lose 10% of your weight before they'll schedule the surgery and I'm only 7.5 lbs from that. I have been in the program since and have only now decided I'm ready to make the changes necessary to be successful after my surgery. I reached my surgery goal weight in May 2011 and decided NOT to have the surgery because I thought I could lose the rest of my weight on my own...obviously I could not. I gained 40 of the 57 lbs I had lost and my type 2 diabetes spun WAY out of control! I'm ready and really excited to finally be taking the steps to take control of my weight once and for all!

Really excited to have found this group and hope to learn alot from all of you.

I would love to know more about the gastric sleeve and whether or not this is something I should consider over RNY. Can anyone share advantages and disadvantages?

    Thanks
    Angela

Angela, you should talk to your doctor, but for me the advantage for RNY was clearing up my type 2. I stopped taking diabetes meds the day of surgery, and my A1C at my 8 week checkup was 5.3 --pretty amazing. My fasting blood sugars are usually in the 70s now, and were from the day I got home. I'm sure the diet changes with the sleeve will certainly help type 2 as well, but the sleeve doesn't have the hormonal changes that RNY does.

Like you, I had lost weight in the past, but never kept it off. The surgery is a great motivator. It's good you are here before surgery. I didn't start MFP til after. The best advice I could give anyone is log everything. Every bite. If you do that, it will be much easier to see if you start to drift.

Thanks for your response. That is actually what I've heard as well which is why I continue to lean toward the RNY. 5.3 - that is amazing!!! I've been logging on MFP for awhile and plan to continue even after surgery. I'm really glad I found this group!

    Hi WLS group,

I am currently enrolled in a Bariatric Program in Saskatchewan for WLS.......my goal is to have the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy......Part of funding for this program is that we have a 6 month pre-program to participate in......we see a psychologist, dietician, exercise therapist and our nurse........we have certain things we need to follow for 2 months before we go back for our follow ups with each specialist......kind of like homework for weight loss for 6 months.........I am in the first month , well going onto Week #2 and My Fitness pal was suggested to us for logging our food and exercise intake.....I really like this program.....kept me accountable........just counting down the months now until surgery and permanent weight loss once and for all....been battling this for about 25 years......excited to be on this journey......!!!

Hi. My name is Corinne. I am 40 years old and currently partaking in the prequalificaiton program for the sleeve procedure. This is my third month of supervised weight loss and just had my psychiatric evaluation that I think I passed. :) I need to lose at least 120 pounds. Excited about the prospect and likely having it done. Worried about the lose skin and the recovery from surgery.

Hello! My name is Kat, I had gastric bypass on Dec 1 2009. I weighed 300lbs at my heaviest and weighed 187lbs at my lowest, which was May of last year, right before I found out I was pregnant. I gained 41lbs with pregnancy and was able to lose 30lbs the first three months post-partum but stalled due to stress about breastfeeding (apparently GB makes it hard to produce milk) and then I was diagnosed with post-partum depression. I started on anti-depressants, which helped me emotionally, but it didn't help me with the eating. Pregnancy screwed with my head, the pregnancy was a complete surprise to my BF and I (I was on bc pills!) and my first reaction when I found out was to go to the nearest McDonald's. That spiraled into a whole week of fast-food ridiculousness (after never touching the stuff post-surgery), sweets and not working out. That week was enough, once I had a taste, I totally went back to all my old habits. After the baby was born I kept starting and breaking diets, and it didn't help that my antidepressants and bc pills make it harder to lose weight. I have a wicked sweet tooth (it's so bad that I will eat things that I KNOW will make me have dumping, just because I can't resist) and all my bad eating during pregnancy stretched my pouch so I can eat more now. I'm at 205lbs right now and would like to get to my goal of 160lbs one day,
As of this Monday Nov 5th, I started taking Phentermine to curb my appetite, it was prescribed by my main doctor with my surgeon's supervision, and so far I think it's helping a little bit. It's really hard to not crave sweets though!! Sorry for the long post, everyone, I just wanted to get it all out there and say HELLO!

Hi! My name is Karen and I'm a month and 1/2 into my medical weight management for RY gastric bypas in PA (3 months MWM dictated by insurance.) Things are going well so far. I've lost about 10 pounds, and am starting to incorporate protein drinks into my eating now. I did find out through all of the testing that I have sleep apnea and a Vitamin D issue...so working on both of those.

Looking foward to meeting some smart people who have "been there" and "done it."

Nice to meet everyone. You are all inspiring.

Hi my name is Stacy  I had my vertical sleeve surgery October 24th 2012...
I was thin most of my life, but let myself go a few years after my kids were born.
I lost weight again, a few years later on a fad diet but put the weight back on when
I quit the diet. That was when I packed on the weight to a whopping 296pounds!
I began getting very sick with migraines lasting 6months+ at a time I felt crippled.
One of my doctors reffered me to a nutrition class at kaiser, it was a 12week course
And I learned how to read labels and count the important items for weight loss.
 Im so thankful for everything I learned during the classes and was given
The name of my surgeon. A few weeks later I was in surgery and as of February
2012 I've lost a total of 84 pounds!! Im still recovering from surgery- but i dont
regret it at all. I have 65pounds left to go..... Im going to the gym and I know it
    will take time.
