RBXChas - I would ask your pharmacist what they think, but I am pretty sure Zantac works the best when taken as a scheduled dose and not as needed. That way your are not having to wait for it to start working and can take the tums in between if needed. But I would make sure to ask your pharmacist or doctor and not take my word on it.
I've been lax about it because I don't like taking meds if I don't feel that I have to. One of my really good friends is a doctor (and had a baby last June), and she texted me earlier today and said she did better on Prevacid than Zantac when she was pregnant, at least until it got so bad that she had to go to prescription meds (she has really bad GERD to begin with). She also said to take it regularly, like you said, whether I have heartburn or not. So yes, you're right!
When it kicks in, it works fine - so I will just take it twice a day, 12 hours between doses, and use Tums as needed
Zantac (which worked fine for my first pregnancy) is NOT cutting it this time around. My doctor sent me home with Nexium samples yesterday and asked my to try it until my next appt (2 weeks) to see if it helps. Fingers crossed that it does. On the plus side, I only have to take it once a day.0 -
Here is my week 35 update. I went in to my OB yesterday for my twice weekly NST and her heart rate was too high again. After being on the monitor for an hour and not seeing it stay down consistently, my OB got me in for a ultrasound with my high risk doc (1 floor down) an hour later. The only problem was I had to stay hooked up to the monitor until 10 minutes before my appointment. So I was hooked up for a total of 2 hours in the morning. :-/ I went in for the other appointment and they did an ultrasound and looked at little girl's heart REALLY well, then I got to visit with my high risk doctor and get monitored for another 40 minutes (total of almost 3 hours on thee monitor all day). Basically with the umbilical vein varix (widening of her vein) coupled with the 2 vessel cord, my preterm labor last week, and her heart rate occasionally being in the 180's she wanted me to stop doing anything to prevent me from going into labor at this point. Her reasoning was there might be something going on that they can't see and my body and the baby are trying to tell us that she would be better off out than in at this point. Especially since I was able to get the steroid shots last week for her lungs and was still having mild contractions despite the procardia. So I stopped my strict bed rest, and all meds yesterday at noon and we are just in a wait and see game right now with continuing my twice weekly NST's.
As of yesterday she was measuring her to be 5 pounds and 1 ounce. We are praying that everything is okay and the delivery will be easy with no complications. I will try to keep you all updated as I can.
I am glad you are being monitored pretty closely and hope and pray for you, that everything goes smoothly!0 -

Good to know! I hope Nexium works for you0 -
I'm ready to post my blahs. lol. Officially 38 weeks today, and body has gotten miserable QUICKLY. Pelvic pain is back with a vengeance (had a break for a few weeks), back is achy, and baby is alternating between bothering my rib cage and my pelvis. I've got a midwife appt tomorrow, going to ask her about membrane stripping and to see when it can be done. It didn't work with ds (different midwife tried at least 2x's with no success). Having some braxton hicks, which is comforting since I really didn't have them with ds. Oh, and I'm getting over a cold which means coughing = lack of bladder control.
I'm going to miss being pregnant but I'm ready to get my body back!0 -

I'm sorry I know how bad it gets towards the end. I've never had my membranes stripped (I heard it's painful, but I don't know if that's just the few "horror stories" I've heard about it), but if she does it, hopefully it will help! I didn't have BH contractions the first time around, but this time I'm having them pretty regularly (though not enough to worry). I also had the coughing issue throughout much of this pregnancy because I've gotten sick multiple times - last time I hardly got sick, maybe one cold the whole time!
After all the random little issues this time, I know I am SO ready to never do this again - so I'm not going to miss being pregnant, but I'm definitely ready to get my body back, and I'm only 30+ weeks!
I hope you deliver soon (and quickly/easily) so that you can have some relief!!!0 -
Popping in from the June board. (Due June 1st so I might have belonged in here afterall:)
Just wanted to comment on the membrane stripping convo. I had my membranes stripped at 39 weeks with my last while I was 3cm dilated....maybe due to the fact I was already dilated some, but I had no pain from it at all....just a tiny bit of what felt like period cramps right after. I was personally hoping it was going to throw me right into labor, as some of my co workers had had it done and went into labor that same day. Unfortunately for me, my son decided to wait for another week and a day to make his appearance....All that being said, seems to have fast results for some, and for some such as myself not much of an effect.0 -
Congrats Rabbit_Food!0
-
I didn't find membrane stripping painful for me, either. A tiny bit of discomfort, but nothing worse than a pap smear. Midwife appt today, and I'm going to ask them when they can do it (new office for me so I'm finally meeting the last of the midwives!)0

I went in for my last monthly Dr's appt yesterday Now I'll be going every two weeks. I also had the ever dreaded glucose test. Man that stuff is so gross.... so I chugged it! So far haven't heard anything back from the Dr's office, but he told me no news is good news so I have my fingers crossed. Baby's heartbeat was great at 150bpm. She seems to be growing just fine. They still can't tell exactly how she's positioned, but for sure not head down yet. She's quite the mover, and without fail every time I'm in for a check up she's squirming so much they have to chase her around. Hope all the other 3rd trimesterers are doing great!! Happy weekend to all!0

After this week of irregular runs of contractions she is now fully engaged in my pelvis (0 station) and I am 1 cm and 50% effaced. I hope she comes next week because all of these contractions are driving me crazy!0

I had my 34ish week appointment yesterday, and the doctor said she was measuring big. He also said that he'll schedule an ultrasound at 38 weeks to check on her size. I'm not sure what will happen if baby is big? I've never had more than one ultrasound per pregnancy, and this one will be three!0

My baby was measuring big at 32 weeks (5lbs 4 oz). They also were pushing for induction for size, which is not a concern for me. Bottom line: 1) size does not matter in the vast majority of cases. Our bodies were made to birth babies of whatever size. My first son was 9 lbs 6 oz. he came out just fine! 2) late pregnancy measurements (ultrasounds included) can be off by as much as 2 lbs.
Don't fret over size. As my (new) midwife says "big babies are cuter anyway!"0 -

I'm having the same experience and it's really irritating me. They aren't saying she is big but since I have gained "so much" weight they want me to get a u/s at 38/39 weeks to make sure she isn't too big. I'm really thinking of just not going because I really don't care how big she is and I will not induce before 42 weeks unless there is evidence that something is going wrong (and a big baby is not something going wrong)0 -

A baby can measure large for length too. My babies so far have been 23 and 24 inches long. One weighed just under 8 lbs and the other was just over 8 lbs. They were so concerned that I was going to have huge babies. This one has been measuring big all along too, but I am not concerned. I am guessing it will be another long, skinny guy.0 -
I just got back from my check up and after having a ton of BH contractions last week, the doctor checked and I am already 70 percent effaced but not dilated....but I am only 32 weeks. The doctor wasn't concerned since I'm not dilated, but now he is saying that he won't be surprised if the baby comes 3 weeks early...he is head down and sitting low already. Honestly it does not surprise me because I suspected my due date was off about 10 days anyway (I am sure of the conception date and it is different from the date they gave me based on lmp).
I know that women can stay at a certain percentage effacement or even be dilated for weeks before there is any more progress, but I am just curious if any of you have had something similar?0 -
Laura - I don't have exactly the same situation as you, but my understanding is that with your first you can efface first then you dilate. As far as being only 32 weeks, I would expect that if it was a problem your doctor would have talked about giving you steroid shots to develop the baby's lungs if he thought you'd deliver before 37 weeks.
I also have an update, but first how is everyone else doing? We are still in a waiting game. I will be 36 weeks tomorrow and my test was good today. I haven't had very many contractions this weekend and got out and did a little walking. I will have ANOTHER ultrasound with my specialist and a regular OB visit on Wednesday. We will see if I have progressed any since last week (which I suspect I have since I started to lose my plug Sunday am) and schedule an induction date for next week if I don't go into full blown labor by then.0 -

With my first I was pretty well-effaced (if that makes sense) when they started doing pelvic checks at 34 weeks, I think like 75%. I was going weekly at that point, and I think at 35 or 36 weeks I was 1cm dilated and 95% effaced, and then at 38 weeks I was 2cm and fully effaced. For some reason at my 38-week visit, my OB said she thought for sure I'd go to 40 weeks, but the next day I lost my mucus plug, and then I went into labor that night (about 18 hours after my doctor's appointment). My son was born the next morning at 38.5 weeks and was plenty big (7lb 3 oz). I had a feeling that I'd gotten pregnant on a short cycle (meaning I was pretty sure I'd ovulated before Day 14), whereas they were calculating my due date based on a 28-day cycle, so in your situation I'd guess they just miscalculated your due date.
This time I think I ovulated around Day 11 of my cycle, so I think my due date may be slightly later than it should be, but only by a few days at the most.
ETA that with my son he was head-down for sure by the time they started doing pelvic checks at 34 weeks, and at my 35-through 38-week appointments, she could feel that his head was right there. When I was in labor, he was right there, ready to come out. I pushed three times, which took all of maybe five minutes, to get him out. I'm hoping this time goes as smoothly!0 -

It sounds like you are super close! I can't wait to hear good news0 -
So how exactly do you know if you have started to lose your plug? I definitely have been extra mucus-y but I feel like there's more to it than that...baby is in position and putting a lot of pressure on my pubic bone so I'm hoping that means she is coming soon0

doubletnurse-My doctor wasn't worried at this point...he just said that if I get more contractions like I did last weekend, then to call him. I was having them very close together on Friday and Saturday especially....they would come for an hour then go away when I did something else, then randomly start again in the evening. I had back pain like crazy and felt like I was having heavy period cramps. I thought about calling but they went away...and my mom was like, it's just your body getting ready so don't worry. But now that I know that he's already sitting right there and with the effacement, I will definitely follow my doctor's advice and call if it happens again. Wow, you are very close to that 37 week mark! I know all of those tests and the monitoring have probably been so stressful...but you are so close!!!
Right now I am just trying to take it easy....has anyone else been extremely tired? I feel like I felt in the first trimester....which is frustrating because I love keeping myself busy but my energy is so low.....and I also feel like my appetite has calmed down, probably because I don't have very much room for more food. But second trimester was when I seemed to eat and eat and never feel full...now getting to eat extra calories has kind of lost its appeal...I just want to hold my baby and be back to normal!
I've wondered about the "plug" too because I've heard it can be different for everybody....
I should probably start reading up on breastfeeding too....0 -
My experience with losing the mucus plug was like having a huge booger with reddish/pinkish/sometimes brownish streaks in it. I know that's a gross way to explain it, but it really sums it up. I also had it come out over the course of a day, so every time I went to the bathroom and wiped, more came out. It started in late morning and finished up by late afternoon, and I went into labor that night around 11:30.
I wasn't sure I'd know when it happened, but when it happens, you know. It's pretty unmistakeable compared to other mucus. If you're interested and aren't currently eating, do a Google Image search. I did that the first time and was kind of grossed out, but when I lost mine there was no doubt in my mind as to what it was.
As for my sister, with her first, she was like me and lost it over the course of a day and then went into labor that night. With her second, she lost it and was induced about 10 days later. It just means you're close, but unfortunately it doesn't tell you quite how close.0 -

I never really noticed with my son last time around. At one point I had the tiniest mucus with bloody show. Then again, I didn't dialate until near the end with help of EPO.
This time around, I've had a TON of mucus in the past week. I self checked myself this afternoon and have noticed that my cervix has dropped some and I feel a little dialated (1 cm is my guess), but still....no bloody show. Last night I had a ton of contractions - they felt non-stop for like 3 hours but then stopped as soon as they started. I'm guessing the contractions did a little work. Hopefully I'm not going to run late this time around!0 -
Also, (at least for me) it could be possible that the plug came out overnight at some point - which is when I tend to do most of my peeing. lol.0
-
Ditto to RBX. With my first, I had pinkish mucus throughout the day on a Monday. Then I went and coached softball for 2 hours that night and then went on a long, long walk. When I got home several huge blobs came out that had streaks of brown/pink. I labored throughout the night, and went in to get checked Tuesday morning. They sent me home with a sleeping pill and told me I'd be back in 12-24 hours. I slept for 12 hours, woke up and labored all through the night again, and the next morning was admitted. That means I started to lose my plug about 2 days before I was admitted to the hospital.0
-
With my first, I never noticed losing my plug, but I noticed it with this one while wiping after using the bathroom. It was kind of like a glob with a brownish/pink color. I had it every time after I wiped on Sunday then it stopped. Still haven't gone into labor, but have had a couple of contractions yesterday and today that just felt like menstrual cramps across my whole belly.
Everything is still good here. My OB got me schedule for my induction Tuesday night (I'll be 37 weeks) with hopefully her delivery on Wednesday. The plan right now is that I will get the Cytotec suppository that night and shouldn't need anything else to get my labor going (just how it went with my son) based on how my cervix felt today. I am still at 1 cm, but VERY soft and her head is still very low and engaged. 6 more days until we get this show started! I can not wait!0 -
Getting real anxious for baby to arrive. For a while i thought for sure she would be coming this week, but the BH have calmed down so now I don't know. I wish there was a way to tell how close we are to delivery!
Thanks to all of you who gave input on the mucus plug, I'm assuming that I haven't lost mine thought it's possible it happened in the night (I don't turn on the lights at night). Tomorrow I'm having lunch with the lactation counselor who is also going to act as my doula (she just got lamaze certified) I hope she comes soon, so ready to meet this little girl (and tired of gaining weight lol)0 -
Tomorrow I reach the official 40 week mark. Can anyone tell me why I only experience contractions on the weekends? lol
Going to try some pump stimulation today. They do produce some contractions, so hopefully my body is getting some of the work done before actual show time. My next appointment is Thursday.0 -

Stuff only happens on the weekend because your doctor's office is closed
I hope the pumping works! I think I would try that after a certain point.0 -
I got tricked into going to get another u/s. The reason I say tricked is that I really don't want to get it but the doc started talking about shoulder dislocation if the baby is too big and that got my husband worried so he wants me to get it. So we are going to get that today to see how big she is. I hope it doesn't show her very big because i'm going to get real irritated if they try to get me to induce because of size0
