This is where we disagree. You think people NEED health insurance and they do not. I didn't have health insurance until I was 27. How did I get through my day without that basic NEED

I didn't have health insurance for quite a while either, but when I did NEED it, I didn't have it. I had to choose between paying for my tuition and going to see if I had something wrong.0 -

Considering we are more than $15 TRILLION dollars in debt and not that far from being in the same boat as Greece and Spain with a Moody's Down Grade I hardly consider the US wealthy.
But somehow we're wealthy enough to give people who make six figure incomes a tax break. Funny how those things work out.

But somehow we're wealthy enough to give people who make six figure incomes a tax break. Funny how those things work out.

And, we can't afford to educate people either. But we can afford to arrest people for doing Marijuana in a state that decriminalized it. That's a great example of State's rights.0 -

I would have been screwed. But that was my choice. I certainly had the option to purchase healthcare at anytime when I did not have it.
Hey.. I am not an uncaring *kitten* for the most part. The health care system in the U.S. needs reform to make it less expensive. We could start with tort reform and go from there. 0 -

I do too, but what we were arguing was whether or not America was a wealthy country. Which we are, we just distribute our money in kind of stupid ways.0 -

That speaks more to the government's abject disregard for veterans than it does healthcare. There are many thousands of Americans who have government-run healthcare who have quality care. (Senators, for example!)
The military is treated abominably by the country they serve. Their healthcare not the least of those issues.0 -

People also need shelter, food and water to survive. Should the government just provide that for everyone too?

Here in my county, if you are on medicaid and pregnant, you have to go to Indy to see a doctor because of the 4 hospitals in our city, no doctors will take medicaid patients because of unpaid claims. There is one clinic that will accept you and it might as well be called the latino cultural center, even the nurses barely speak english and their is ONE M.D. for the entire facility.0 -

Government housing and food stamps. Already provided. I seem to notice that people seem to think that those who are in poverty want to be there. For the most part, that is not the case.0 -

You're ok with kids dying of cancer because their parents can't afford to get them chemo? You are indeed a horrible person.
I'm going back to the Socialist Utopia that I live in, where I thank the labour government and post war sense of taking care of each other every single day for what we have.
We were recovering from the world war (countries are pretty damn expensive to rebuild) and we still manage to find the cash to set up our NHS, I'm sure y'all can get your *kitten* out of Iraq long enough to help take care of sick poor people, if you have any compassion at all for your fellow human beings.0 -

I couldn't afford it either. I chose to pay for rent, school, and my car instead of for health insurance. Again that was my choice. I could have chosen to go to school part time or ditch my car and pay for health insurance.
People have lots of actual needs... Food, water, shelter. Should the government create a mandate for these needs? What makes health insurance special?0 -

I'm a pretty hardcore libertarian and I can't see and ounce of sense in the entire law. I realize that social programs are necessary to help those who are in need, but the US government has the SH*TTIEST track record ever with managing money and allocating resources effectively to make those programs actually effective. If we really want to see health care become more affordable, how about we demand more transparency regarding medical costs such as medicines, treatments, fees, etc??
Asking insurance companies to agree to insure someone who has a preexisting condition (mind you, at the same rate as someone who does not have a preexisting condition) is asinine. It goes 100% against how insurance works, which is based on assessing the risk of the investment, in this case, the policy holder. I agree that cut-rate insurance companies have given a really bad name to the entire industry to refusing to honor claims and dropping clients when they need the coverage the most. Consumers DO need protection against things like that, most certainly. But all we will get by cutting out the insurance provider is this: broad-based medical care, with no access to higher level medical care, and drastically lowered competition in the medical profession i.e. crappy doctors.
Currently, I have Tricare Prime, and that is 100% government run health care. I dreaded having to give up my Blue Cross Blue Shield... And I still do!0 -

I support government healthcare but you may want to realize that it was the US lending money to the UK after World War II that enabled your country to get back on its feet. That loan was not repaid until 2006.0 -

I support government healthcare but you may want to realize that it was the US lending money to the UK after World War II that enabled your country to get back on its feet. That loan was not repaid until 2006.
We also benefited from that. They used our materials to rebuild, which helped pull us out of the depression.0 -

My school does, but they don't keep close tabs on it. I went without insurance all year because I was paying for my own tuition and didn't have the money to pay for insurance. A few weeks ago, I thought I broke my foot but I could not get it checked out because I couldn't afford it. Thankfully for me, it wasn't as serious, so it's basically healed now. I would have felt more comfortable, though, if I had insurance and I knew that I could get treated if I needed to.0 -

Democracy is far superior to socialism. Deal with it. Do I want to live in a country where there is no more competition and no matter how hard I work, my standard of living will always be the same as the guy who sits on his *kitten* all day?? HELL NO. That's why America is different, and yes, better. Sadly, we are heading down the socialist spiral and it's scary as f***.0 -

I think you've confused Socialism with Communism and Democracy with Capitalism.
The health care system I have been suggesting through this WHOLE thread is not socialism, or communism. And it's even more capitalistic than the system we have now.0 -

I find nothing in the constitution which allows the government to force Americans to purchase something, and fine them if they choose not to.
Would be nice if anyone followed what the constitution said at all...
I also find it funny that in the oath soldiers take, they have to swear to defend the constitution. Where did that go?0 -
