@clepant - I don't get what the country is coming to when kids start shooting kids. It seems like it's happening more and more. I don't understand threatening schools either. The only threats to schools we had when I was young were when someone didn't want to take a test. They always got caught though because sooner or later they would brag about it.

I will be honest. I see kids being shunned or kids that lack social skills and they struggle with making friends. I also see lots of kids with anger issues. I have a boy in third grade who hates school, hates himself, hates the world. The signs are all there but parents don’t see it. I also know that kids are so cruel. I teach in one of the top districts in the country. If you don’t fit in, you are screwed. This leads to lots of hate over time. Kids can be down right nasty. They don’t tease, they bully.....online or verbally. We try and deal with it but it isn’t going away any time soon. I also blame how much violence these kids see through video games and movies. Stuff I would never let my kids see. I could write a book....maybe I will.

We were discussing this very thing between classes last night. I too feel the video games & videos are a major reason for this but the parent age of these students NEED a lesson in respect & it's not ALL about THEM too! Also Social Media is UGLY most of the time!!! I think of you often on how you would handle some of these situations!!! Power to ya woman!!!

I'm not sure it's the violence in video games. It's the lack of consequences for things they do. We used to watch Bugs Bunny and Road Runner. That's two cartoons now deemed too violent for children. That didn't mean we started shooting each other in school. There are no consequences though. You fail a class, they graduate you anyway. You punch another student, they adjust your schedule to make sure you stress that led to you punching the other kid is accommodated. You punch a teacher and they switch your class so you don't have the anxiety that teacher was causing. Why would they expect consequences for shooting someone? They wouldn't.

Dean: Some of these videos like Caal of Duty and others are pretty realistic. Kids fantasize and get so engrossed in this stuff. My now 30 year nephew would sit for hours on end and play that crap and still does to some extent. Shooting people is exciting until there is real pain and blood. Kids also think they are invisible. But I agree, there is a lot of parenting issues. Kids do something wrong and it is never their fault. No one accepts responsibility anymore for anything. It is a different culture. And most of all, it is just shocking to here kids talk to their teachers in a disrespectful way. It has to be going on at home. I would have had a bar of soap stuffed in my mouth, paddled, grounded and an apology note written.

I've been the recipient of more than one slap to the mouth or paddle, but I only remember mouthing off to my mother once. My dad applied a sufficient amount of leather strap to my backside that I never forgot that lesson.

And that's GOAL for @MYBESTTUTU and @SUFFERLANDRIAN!!! CONGRATS!!! :drinker:

@KAR328 - Thank you so much for the kind words and the virtual hug.

@CLEPANT - You are so right....what other choice do we have but to deal with it and accept it as our reality. What other choice do we have? No good ones anyway... I just wish I'd stop being tested to see how much I can really take. And the compliment you received from your student and his mother made me a little misty-eyed. How beautiful was that to hear?

@VHUBER - Wowsah! You amaze me...you're an activity machine! :drinker:

    Dave

    Thanks Dave!
