Oh man, it's been a cruddy few weeks for swimming. Work has gotten in the way so I haven't been to the pool in ages. I did, however, get myself a wet suit last week, which I took out to my local lake yesterday. Temps around 90, but the water is still quite chilly - ice out was less than a month ago here in Minnesota.

And it was the worst. swim. ever.

When I bought the suit, I managed to get it on without snagging it. First time out at the beach, I dig half a dozen holes into. ARghghhhh! Then I realized I forgot my swim cap, but I'm already in my suit so I decide to just go. I'm super flustered and agitated and not making good decisions at this point. For some reason I get into the water swimming into the waves (which run parallel with the beach so all I had to do was walk down to the other end to swim swim with the waves. but I didn't. cuz i'm dumb). Every time I put my face in the water, my lungs constrict. Hair in my eyes. Cue panic attack at 200 yards. Spent a lot of the time floating around on my back trying to breathe. I struggled through 1000 yards, mainly freestyle with my face out of the water. Definitely not pretty.

I've done open swim at this lake for 2 seasons and it's never been this bad. This was just swimming back and forth across the roped off area. Hopefully the wet suit induced panic issues will subside before true open swim season starts and we can swim across the lake. I don't want to be 300 yards from shore when an attack hits :/

So tonight, I will use the repair cement on my wet suit. And then tomorrow morning, I'm getting up at the (literal) crack of dawn to bike out 30 miles to a lake to swim with some new friends, and then bike home before it hits the mid 90s. Hopefully I'll be calmer this time around.

@emmab0902 That's fantasic!!! Wow! Big cheers from the Pacific NW too! :)

Gutzy, that is just unacceptable. I get an errant swimmer or limb every now and then and it really bugs me. A lane (or pool) full of them would be too much. How can you even get a workout in? I admire your tenacity. There is some wacky swimming that goes on. I'm not really sure what the benefits are, or if there are any at all. I used to share a lane with two women who would dog paddle. Lordy, it took forever for them to do one length! AND they swam side by side, so circling with them was miserable.

I got my usual Thursday swim in + the cardio class. I think the cardio instructor is doing a progressive overload with us. I told her that I'm training to climb the volcano in August. She's done it before, so I think she wants to aid my training

@UmmSqueaky oh no that sounds awful. I heard some ripping noises when I put mine on last night but no holes - probably put a good strain on the stitching though!!!!

Hope your next swim goes better and that you feel much more calm and relaxed

Bit of a disastrous nationals for me.

Ended up doing 800 free 400IM and 200IM

800 free was 11.23.25. Got the gold and it was all downhill from there. That was 8.30pm Friday night.

Saturday did 400IM - gold but not a great time - 6.27 which is 9s slower than at the worlds and felt very tired and heavy (? from the 800 the night before)

It gets worse....swam the 200IM in 2.57 and won my age group by 36 seconds.. But got disqualified for SUPPOSEDLY doing a non simultaneous touch. Which I know for certain wasn't true - I was super careful in all my turns. But you aren't even allowed to dispute it. Even my coach (who's a former Olympics coach) who watched the race said I did nothing wrong.

So on balance I feel like the meet was a waste of time and money, and am feeling really cheated out of the 200IM.

I'm sure I will get over it, but right now I'd be happy to walk away from swimming.

    Gutted.
    :disappointed:

Had a pretty productive last few days.

Saturday, I got up at the crack of dawn, loaded up my bike with my wetsuit and swim stuff and biked 35 miles out to a gorgeous clear calm spring fed lake to do OWS with some friends. Got 2000 yards in in 48 minutes, no panic attacks. Biked the 35 miles back through the metro to meet my significant other for brunch as the heat slowly climbed into the lower 90s and neglected to do an adequate job with sun screen, and so now am very very burnt.

Got back to masters swim today, 2400m

    1000m before masters swim
    200m kick
    200m build free

45 laps and I was done. I was actually not feeling it before I left work, so it was a major win that I got to the pool and stayed in for a swim :smirk:

Had a really great open water swim last night. We're still a few weeks out from official open water swim club season, so I suited up in my wet suit and did laps across the roped off swim area at my local lake. Looking forward to the sanctioned swim across the lake time coming up in mid June :) 2000 yards.

2 miles and then the deep water x class. I slept like a baby. The swim was OK. I'm still using my fins more than usual because I feel like I've lost some body positioning, but it was a good workout. Hopefully back tonight. Fridays are hard... I'd so much rather go home and start my weekend. However, it's the quietest night at the pool, so that's good.

5.11 miles, 9000 yards. 3x3000 with a 15 second electrolyte pause between sets.

Back to China again on Thursday. 6 weeks this time.
I made a suggestion to the sales guy i talk with regarding banning breast stroke from the fast lane when anyone is doing front crawl. It is a safety issue.
