2nd July steps: 20,786
Was too far under deficit yest so planning on getting closer to budget today to avoid a binge being on the cards.
Did lots of exercise and am starting to feel fitter... although Fitbit still has my heart rate as fair.... I'd like to see that to good by the end of summer.
First weigh in in the morning; that's going to keep me on track even though weds has typically been a treat evening.
It's hump day people, yippee!3 -

I will skip the step challenge this month. I am going on vacation out of the country tomorrow until next Tuesday. So can I move my weigh from Monday to Wednesday for this month?

Ok all, I need some advice. I want to get back to walking but we are into the really hot and humid weather. Yesterday I walked to the bookstore and back. I thought I was going to die. I am not a morning person and it is all I can do to get up at 8 am to start my day. So what tips do you have for getting a walk in this weather?1

Hi all! I'm Stephanie and I've been a part of this team for several months now. I'm within about 10 pounds of my original goal weight of 160, but I am having the hardest time getting there. I'd love to say I'll reach my goal this month, but I know that's not likely. Instead, I'll challenge myself to lose 5.4 pounds. I just signed up for a weight loss challenge at work, so hopefully that will motivate me as well.
Week 1

Dusk is also a nice time to walk if you can't bring yourself to get up early. Aside from bugs, it's my favorite time of day to be outside.

Can you walk indoors? I can't always go outdoors by myself so I tend to stick on a TV show and a fan, then take circuits around my living room. It doesn't get your HR up as much as outdoors but gets your steps up and burns some calories (it still comes up on my fitbit that I'm exercising too).1 -

Are there any free indoor walking tracks in London? I know in st. Thomas we have one around our arena which is really nice because it has air conditioning on to keep the ice surface. I know the north London Y has one also but that is not free. As for outside, I avoid the heat and humidity as much as possible. I have found that I enjoy hiking though. There is a nice trail a few minutes from my house and it is completely covered with tree canopies. It does not feel nearly as humid as it does in the city.

@lindamtuck2018 , I'm a sweater and there is nothing i can do about it.....! so, I embrace it. It means walking to work in different clothes and changing when I arrive, getting places early to allow for cool down time and daily washing of my hair in summer; which it doesn't really appreciate....!
For my runs I do go early, or otherwise late. When I know I have to do an early run I go to bed with my hair already plaited and leave all my running gear laid out on the couch to save a bit of time and to reduce the possibility of me making excuses to not go.
Material and fit of clothes can also make a huge difference.1 -
@lindamtuck2018 I’m not sure how hot is “hot” to you, every region is different (not just in degrees but humidity, wind factor, etc).
For me there is hot but bearable - yes I will sweat a lot and need to drink like a fish, wear a hat, sunscreen, sun glasses, maybe supplement salt to counter dehydration, choose a route with more shade or breeze - and OMG i’m melting hot, which is actually a health hazard and you need to take care. (I live in Australia, in an area with fairly hot summers and mild winters - we laugh when England says they are having a heat wave of 30 degrees Celsius as that is not a heat wave to us; about 40 degrees is our melting point & we’ll get a few days each summer that hit that).
Walking at night, walking by the beach (if you are near one - I am) so you can put your feet in the water, wetting your hat so it cools your head, etc are options.
Fallback: go to an indoor air conditioned mall and walk around in the cool. Not so relaxing though!
Or swap walking for swimming. I know that can be intimidating when we are overweight, and I must admit last summer I don’t know that I went swimming even once (our seasons are reversed in Australia to the northern hemisphere, so right now is winter for me), but it is possibly the more sensible option in hot weather.1 -

Thanks all for the wonderful advice. I am going to look into some of the options you guys mentioned and keep you posted on how I make out. I spent the day at the pool with my granddaughters. When I wasn’t playing with them I walked back and forth in the pool. I had to have got some exercise. Unfortunately, I also fried.3

I suppose us moaning about 30 degrees being a heatwave could be funny. However, our homes are made for rain and cold so there's a lot of insulation - which makes indoors even warmer. Very few people have air con or even plug in fans. The same goes for workplaces, I used to work in a lab where, with all the machines, it would be 40+ in our version of a heatwave and we had no means of cooling. It's not financially viable for air con as temps above 25 are so rare.
Temperature is all relative depending on where you live. Much like someone living in Australia might come here and find it freezing, while we think it's mild. The same goes for us finding -5 cold when places in Canada and America regularly have far colder temps. For me personally, 30 is very warm and very uncomfortable.

@ShowKitten Temp really is relative, when living in the UK isn't wasnt cold until it was freezing. Here in Portugal it feels really cold when it reaches 10c or below, mainly to lack if insulation and the damp. When I lived in Thailand it was only hit in the very high 30s or 40s but in Europe I find it hot much earlier than that in the thermometer.
Have a lovely day today to all those celebrating!
