I haven't kept up well but I have been reading and learning. I seriously do not think I could maintain a jog at under 120 hr. My avg for slow talkin type runs is 150's
Scott, have you tried running on the "other side" of the road? I have a bad right knee so I run on the right where the slope put less pressure on that knee.
78.55 out of 150 stretch goal this month. Honestly I will be happy to just get more mileage than Jan and Feb 128+miles . I have found that focusing on pace tends to make me want to do shorter runs. Today I did 6 and just sort of cruised at 10 -11 min miles until I felt obligated to push the last one (late for work!) and do an 8:50 mile. I am finding that I do miss the 6 and 7 mile runs somewhat maybe more endorphins?
yesterday at lunch I think I finally got back in sync with the time change and my body and felt more energetic than I had since we changed last weekend. The same with waking up the hr earlier this morning felt more normal. I have an AF friend who swears that we adjust within 24 hrs but I always seem to take 3-4 days. I hope they decide to stop changing it back and forth. I don't care which it is but keep it the same and quit making everyone miserable 2x a year.4 -

Since I didn't have to go into the office today, I waited for sunrise so I could run the trail. Got to see a pretty sunrise and saw my trail friend/dog.
I really need to do my strength training/PT. I set a goal to do 2 workouts a week and a yoga for flexibility. The last couple of weeks I have only done 1 workout and no yoga. Today. Gonna do it today. I'm going to start adding a PT to my log on days I do it. Logging things seems to help me w accountability.6 -

Thanks for the kind thoughts and suggestions all! I have been trying to take some time off and do some self-care this week. Tuesday I went out for a lovely breakfast and Wednesday I went for a massage. Today I did not go into work at all, and I took Stella out for a long walk and run. We walked around 3 miles and then I decided I should get a little attempt at running in, and I wanted to get home a little sooner, so we picked up the pace and ran the 2 remaining miles home. It was a little stop and go but it went okay. It was an absolutely beautiful day to be outside on the trails at nearly 70 degrees and sunny. We saw a LOT of people. Stella was wiped out after we got home, which is hard to do.
Updates are that my back is doing better. The massage was nice and I have been doing heat and sauna a couple of times. It's still a little tender but much improved. The massage person was a new guy that is a brother of a runner in my group, and I was happy with him. He spent a lot of time on my upper back/shoulders, while my issue is lower back, but I didn't complain too much because he worked on some major tight spots I didn't even know were there. He suggested next time I book for 90 minutes because he could have spent 70 just on my tight leg muscles alone. True.
And my BF has a new referral for an interventional cardiologist (I didn't know that was a distinct field) and a better sense of why the treatment plan changed and what the timeline is for seeing if meds work. He's still wiped out but hopefully things will be improving with the meds in a couple of week or the new dr will recommend alternative intervention.
Still not the spring break I had planned but looking up a little bit at least. The (temporary) gorgeous weather is helping for sure. I will not dwell on the weekend forecast8 -
@shanaber thanks for sharing that story! Mildred is amazing!
@scott6255 I’m sure you already considered this, but how old are your shoes? Once I get 300+ miles on my shoes, I find the pavement much harder on my joints than the dirt path at the park. But I have very little treadmill experience.4 -
Yesterday was my first time returning to the Greenline since having to go to the ER after my bad run there. I felt stupid for being so nervous but I really had bad associations with the place! Everything was fine, though, and it should be easier next time.
First 5 miler on roads since having heart issues, trying to only use meds on hard runs so trying to keep my heart rate low the whole time. Interesting reading about everyone else’s heart zones, I was trying to stay under 138 which according to Apple Watch is where my “moderate” pace becomes “tempo.” Also I have noticed my heart so far behaves fine if I stay under 140, so that’s convenient that the two are so close. Well… by running easy I can keep it under 138 for a mile, but then it wants to bob up to 141. And after three miles it starts climbing until by the end of five it was hanging out around 151 no matter how slowly I ran. Also I get super bored and my form is hard to maintain running that slowly! Anyway my heart did not do the SVT thing so that was a success overall, even though I really have mental issues running slowly. At one point we passed a walking family with kids and one of the boys, about ten or so, broke into a run so we ended up racing him and laughing for about a third of a mile until he gave up cause kids have no stamina. Fun but my heart rate never did go back down after that! So, I think the moral of the story is I have no self control.
Re: daylight savings time. It has mixed benefits for us, being nocturnal. On the one hand it’s easier to get a run in before sundown. On the other hand, it’s even harder to do things like banking that have to be done during certain official hours. And in the high summer when pre-dawn is the only tolerable temperatures for running, it becomes downright obnoxious because Memphis and Germantown make it illegal to use a park before 6 am. In August it’s already over 90 F by the time it’s legal to run!
@shanaber re: raccoons. My observation based on previous years is that at this time of year all the exiled boys are forming small bands of two or three and seeking out new territories. Supposedly racccons are solitary, but that has never been my observation! Of course no one has really studied them since 1984 so who knows. At that time it became illegal to own them in most parts of the US, so researchers stopped using them, and for some reason there has never been a real study of them in the wild - or more accurately, in urban environments. I do know from reading that male raccoons travel up to 18 miles in search of food and mates, so they probably shift around quite a bit.
On that note, we saw something alarming on our run yesterday - a raccoon by the side of the trail dying of distemper. Canine distemper is a major cause of death in raccoons and it’s a really horrifying way to go. Since it’s a result of bad owners failing to get their dogs vaccinated it makes me angry. It can go through whole populations like wildfire, and it takes out 75% of the community when it strikes. So I am praying we are far enough away. And I feel so bad for the poor coon we saw yesterday - it was blind and having a seizure and kept making little “help me” noises. It if had been during business hours we could have called animal control to put it down, but after hours there was nothing to be done for it. I’m sure everyone here is a good dog owner but if you know anyone who might not be, spread the word, get those vaccines!6 -

It was perfect running weather this morning and I ran just a smidge over 5 miles. The moon was so pretty and I figured that a few of you were probably out running under the same moon and I thought that was pretty cool.
I am pretty excited about going to see my daughter this weekend. I hope to get at least a mile in each day for the streak. There is a park near her apartment and she has already said she'd like to take us to walk there, so I know I will at least get a walk in.

@katharmonic an interventional cardiologist is one who does catheter procedures, correct? Did they find a blockage after all?0

rheddmobile wrote: »@katharmonic an interventional cardiologist is one who does catheter procedures, correct? Did they find a blockage after all?
@rheddmobile yes, that's correct, and electrophysiology. He does have some blockage but apparently it is within normal limits for his age (mid 50s). He may be looking at an ablation depending on how the trial with beta blockers goes. Right now it's really wiping him out, which apparently is typical and it takes a couple of weeks to adjust.
I'm glad to hear you are running without having the SVT issues. I'm sure it's hard to run slowly.
What an upsetting thing about the raccoon with distemper. I hope your little raccoon colony is safe. You are such a good animal advocate and interpreter, your description is so sad.3 -

This past year I made a purposeful shift to make my easy runs actually be easy. It does feel really hard to run more slowly when you first start doing it. Over time, I noticed little changes in my form like shorter steps with a faster cadence and just straight up using less effort on my easy runs and those slower paces start feeling more natural. Hang in there!rheddmobile wrote: »Re: daylight savings time… And in the high summer when pre-dawn is the only tolerable temperatures for running, it becomes downright obnoxious because Memphis and Germantown make it illegal to use a park before 6 am. The park cutoff totally sucks. I hear you on the pre-dawn summer runs! So so so hot!
Also, re:raccoons. It’s interesting that you say scientist have said they are solitary. My experience has also been that they formed little groups. We have several little roaming families in our neighborhood that you see from time to time and rarely is one by itself.

@rheddmobile That is sad to hear about the raccoon. I hope he doesn’t suffer too long.
@kgirlhart Enjoy your visit with your daughter!
I did another “test” easy run today for 3 miles, trying to do it by feel and then look at zones after before starting the 80/20 plan. I managed better today, staying in zone 2 half the time and zone 3 the other half. This weekend I will make a spreadsheet with the 5k 80/20 plan and will start it Monday. I can tell it is going to be such a major adjustment!
I took today off work, so I picked up my race packet for tomorrow. It is about to storm here, but I’m glad it is coming through today and not in the morning! Hubby and I are going to spend the day in Atlanta on a date day with lunch, the immersive Picasso exhibit, and a concert tonight. I’ll have to sleep on the way home to get enough rest before tomorrow.5 -
Thought I would post this article referenced in the '6 Minute Mile' Newsletter about the 80/20 rule, what it is and why we should consider it. Seems like a timely piece given the discussion here.
@marisap2010 it references Matt Fitzgerald as well as a study that was done on a small group of (non-elite) lower mileage runners.
No running yesterday or likely today. We had appointments and then needed to be out of the house yesterday. This morning, more appointments and it is going to be well over 80 this afternoon. May go for a walk though.
Non-running related....Yesterday we drove into LA and took a tour of Dodger Stadium. Have gone to games there for years, even shared season tickets for a few years but had never had a tour or gotten to go out on the field. So much history and so interesting. Dh was in heaven having been a Dodger fan since he was a little kid and would go to games with his dad.
The views of LA from the stadium were awesome and we could see all the way beyond the LAX approach, to the ocean. To the south (no picture) we could see all the way to the Santa Ana Mountains, south of where we live.
The actual reason we were there 😁 to see the stadium. Also saw the World Series trophies, Golden Gloves, Silver bats and so many historic pictures.6 -
@SummerSkier @emmamcgarity thanks for the tips. I have two pairs of shoes in rotation, both with less than 200 miles. I run primarily on sidewalks and paved trails, so slope doesn't really play into it much.
@marisap2010 good luck on your race tomorrow!
@shanaber cool that you got to tour Dodger stadium!
Wondering about @polskagirl01 I saw were Russia bombed a city very near the Poland border Hope you and your family are safe!6 -
@Teresa502 We must have posted at the same time on Tues. I was just going back to see where I left off and saw your post. I read the article on jogging and think it really is spot on. When people talk about me running they say things like, "I wish I was a runner, but I just can't." "I'd be dead if I ran a mile." I try to tell them that they don't have to go fast. They can take it slow and walk when needed. I do think non-runners believe that running means going as fast you possibly can every time you go out and, pushing yourself to the limits with every workout. Jogging does NOT have the connotation to most. I love it. Maybe I'll start using the word jog to people to see if they can be inspired to try.
I love Mildred's story @shanaber !
@kgirlhart Enjoy your weekend visit with your daughter!
@martaindale I like daylight savings time, but then I am not a morning person. But, I do like have time after work, even it I work the late shift, to get outside and either exercise or get some work done. Things I would NOT do in the morning. Glad you were able to get out later yesterday for the trail run and see your trial friend and dog.
@Scott6255 I'm glad treadmill running is helping your legs feel better. As you know, I don't mind the treadmill, especially for relatively short runs. It does get a little boring after 5 or 6 miles though.
@marisap2010 Good luck with your marathon. Look forward to seeing your race report. I think you will like the 80/20 running. As I read the article on jogging that @Teresa502 posted, it made me think of the 80/20 strategy. You don't need to run fast every run. This approach really helped me mentally, if not physically, to get in those long miles for the HM training last year. Which 5K plan are you going to do, Level 1, 2, or 3?
@katharmonic Self care is so important and something that most of us don't do enough of. Glad you were able to do that this week. Glad your BF is going to get a second opinion.
@rheddmobile So glad you are able to run faster now. I love that you raced the little boy. I'm sure he got a kick out of that. I can understand you being tentative about running there again. Firsts are the hardest. Since things went well, I'm sure the next time will be a little bit easier for you. That's so sad about the raccoon with distemper.
@shanaber Your pictures of the stadium and LA are great. I don't recall it looking that pretty whenever I drove in when I lived in San Bernardino.
@Scott6255 @polskagirl01 is running still and posting on her news feed. She is now on the opposite side of Poland, away from the border. If you are on Facebook, you can read what she and her husband are doing in Poland here: https://www.facebook.com/WhitesInPoland/3 -

35.55 miles/60 mile goal
I played tennis this morning, after working at the daycare from 6:30 - 9:45 am. It was fun. Feels like it has been forever since I have been able to play. I didn't have to go back to work afterwards, so came home, did a mile walk on the driveway, and then took a nap.
Big news is that I got my new Garmin Wednesday night. I like it, but it needs to do some learning about my sleep. Last night I only was only able to sleep a little less than 4.5 hours. I felt like I was awake looking at the clock all night. I don't know why I do that when I know I have to get up earlier than normal. Do you all do that? Anyway, I felt like I had no sleep, but Garmin says: "Even though you did not sleep long enough, your body recharged well." Think again Garmin. Think again. LOL
Watch porn in the spoiler.
New Garmin on my wrist. I decided to go with a color other than black. I like it.
It looks like a lighter color here. The one on my wrist is more true.3 -
@quilteryoyo nice watch! Is it the FR745? And thanks for the update on @polskagirl01
Did another 6 miles on the treadmill. It's not bad if you have Netflix and Amazon Prime Video 😁

I took a vacation day today to go to Austin to visit my daughter, but I got up and ran this morning before we left. It was awesome. I slept in until I just woke up and then I went out for a run thinking I would run about 3 miles or 30ish minutes. It was a little windy, but otherwise nice. I looped around to see Sunny the Donkey and then headed back home. I ended up being pretty speedy and almost had negative splits. When got to the house I was at 4.3 miles and since my husband wasn't up yet I went back out and ran another .7 miles to make an even 5 miles. I do hope to get a short run in tomorrow, but at least I think I will get a walk in.

Sorry for not checking in! I'm still here
We have guests (2 moms & 4 children) so it's a bit busy here. Also my husband has taken a couple trips east to help out closer to the border where we used to live. Where we are now is a small city in the middle of nowhere, not far from the Czech border.
Re: Running
The training plan isn't really happening, but I'm running when I can. It does help.7 -
@Scott6255 Thanks. Yes, my watch in a Forerunner 745. I still need to play with it some and finish setting everything up, but so far I really like it. Great run on the treadmill. TV is a good distraction for treadmill runs.
@kgirlhart Sounds like one of those rare, wonderful runs. Glad you got to see Sunny. Hope he is doing well. Have fun with your daughter.
@polskagirl01 You are doing great with keeping up some running and bless you for your efforts at helping the people of the Ukraine in anyway you can.4 -
@quilteryoyo Nice watch! I think you're going to love it! Garmin always overestimated my sleep too. It did get a little better with some time but it definitely lacks a little. I actually thought Fitbit did a pretty good job with sleep tracking.2
