WaistAways Team Chat - OCTOBER 2022

Hello my name is Kelly and I teach Kindergarten. I am married with 4 kids. I have thyroid problems that make it easy to gain weight, hard to lose. I spent the first half of 2022 gaining weight. I am finally losing again, but I didn't make my Sept goal.
This weekend was crazy busy and so much was surrounding food, lots of food. We had family from out of state visiting so we had a huge family BBQ. Plus, we celebrated my daughter's birthday and 6 high schoolers stay the night. I avoided snacking on food and skipped the bread since I knew I would want dessert. The scale is up, but not as much as I thought I might be.4 -
Hi team!
I'm Courtney in Val-des-Monts, Québec Canada living with my husband and two indoor cats and now a new addition of an outdoor cat. We own a 'project' house where everything needs to be worked on and nothing ever seems finished so all of my spare time and money are wrapped up into it. It leaves very little time for meal planning and the quick snacks are reached for more often than they should be.
I'm reasonably active playing team sports and working on the property but portion size is my main problem. I've lost 50lbs since joining this group but have plateaued for nearly a year and a half now. Most of my weight loss when it happens these days is due to random luck and not effort. October is the last push before winter so all the final chores are to be done. We keep having disheartening setbacks on some projects so it ends up doubling the work and I turn to the wine and cheese for comfort. This needs to get reined back in.
I'm going to try to be more conscious of portions this month but plan to get back to tracking fully in November.4 -

@CarolAnnM2 Welcome to Onederland! We are all having a celebration with you
@Rachelw124 no worries about the first week - it'll turn around, I'm sure. And do you think you could send your son over to give @micki48 's little ones some lessons in going to sleep? I'm sure they need a good mentor. Although I discovered almost 30 years ago that the one thing worse than being an insomniac is being an insomniac's mother. My daughter did not sleep worth a dang for many, many years. And even then it was just because she learned to read in bed that I survived it! No mentor would have helped, I fear...
@PlaneMonkey Here's to random luck! 🥂

@DD265 what book are you reading? Does it have helpful tips for BED?2

Thank you @jugar1

Pickleball was a success. I think I'm going to really like it, now to buy my own paddle (I've always had a thing about touching things that other people have, even pre covid I was a nightmare with that stuff) and get Mr B onboard

This was a very quiet day. My vegetable garden is now officially closed for the winter - last parsnips, winter squash, and lettuces came out today. Now it will be time to plant the winter rye and let it all go to sleep. And then I'll be all impatient for there to be a lot of snow so I can try out my new snowshoeing boots!
So how is everyone showing up this week? What are the things you commit to - what will you look for ways to do rather than avoid?
Maybe it is a magic number - calories, grams of the macro of your choice, minutes of exercise. Let's make this week count!
Parsnips! I love them and haven't had them in so long, of course I like them roasted with parmesan on
This week I am committing to slowing down when I eat and pacing myself with those at my table3 -
@CarolAnnM2 Onederland.. how wonderful
You have accomplished SO much! Way to go3 -
Yesterday, we had a nice (but short) hike.. the exercise wasn't up to the levels I thought, I overate at late lunch / early dinner, and then made some poor choices at night.
So, today was different! Good food, lots of exercise, and that included a hard Peloton workout. I have a work dinner at a decadent steakhouse Wednesday night just before my weigh in so I don't know how things will shake out but I'm determined to end October lower than I started it!7 -

Hi @jugar - thanks so much for letting me squeak into this group!
I've scanned the chat so far, and it's a bit of information overload, so apologies in advance if I miss anything or misunderstand how things work. I'll start with weigh-in related info:
Starting weight (on Oct. 1st): 300.4 lbs
Current weight: 298.2 lbs
Weigh-in day: Friday
I just hopped back on MFP on Saturday after years of using it very infrequently. I'm 46, single, and no dependents aside from a very adorable, very loveable dog-like cat.
I am at my all-time highest weight after some tough years. I lost 75+ lbs back in 2009/10 and kept it off for six years with clean eating and a new found love of running. The maintenance felt effortless until life imploded in 2015 - five job changes in four years, six moves in five years, health challenges of my own, and then my mom's health deteriorated quite rapidly after a 2019 lung cancer diagnosis. When the pandemic hit, I temporarily moved in with my parents in a rural area and said goodbye to my life in the city. Gratefully, my job transitioned to remote work, so this move was doable. Because my mom's health was so fragile, my dad and I took on all of her care because having outside care come into the home was too risky. During this time, my emotional eating kicked into crazy high gear and my exercise dwindled to nothing - bad combo.
Sadly, my mom passed away in January, and I've decided to stay with my dad for a while yet as we recover from the past couple of years. Health-wise, I've had some challenges this year - knee injury in April after jumping right back into running (oops) followed by a concussion in June after a nasty fall - but I'm finally in a place where I can commit to making the changes that I need to make to get back to a healthier, happier me.
This month, my goals are getting back into a clean eating groove while watching macros, making progress with the C25K program, focusing on moving daily (e.g. walking, 15 min strength training, yoga, etc.), and ensuring that I get enough sleep/down time. Anxiety has been running very, very high for years - need to reset my baseline.
I also write on the side, so apologies in advance for any lengthy posts (like this one)! All in all, I'm excited for this community of support/accountability. I've tried unsuccessfully to tackle these health goals in isolation over the past few years, and it's just not working. My greatest fear is that I will unintentionally flake out on a requirement for this group - my memory has been very bad this past year. I will do everything I can to be a good WaistAways teammate!
Looking forward to navigating October with you all!

Hello!
Today was back on track. Did my morning workout and hit my macros for the day. My switch to doing all of the lunch prep in the morning is working. It's a little stressful but better than feeling like I don't get to relax in the evening. I really need to work on my weekends this month. They are basically out of control. I'm hoping that once cross country ends next week and I'm not getting home late every day, I feel less tired. Once I'm tired I just give up and eat take out all weekend. Not good!
Tomorrow I head into the physical therapy clinic and I am really interested to see what they say. I have been doing a ton of foam roller work. I also have a ton of bad knots in my calf which is contributing to my plantar fasciitis.
@CarolAnnM2 Congrats on all your hard work!
Welcome to all of our new members!
Now I just need to stay out of the kitchen until bed time! I think I will have to snuggle a doggie or get one of the piggies out or I might not make it 😬8 -
Good morning WaistAways!
The gym yesterday was tough, but it's done and I'm glad I did it.
I made chili for dinner, which my kids love, this one using up some dried black eyed peas and some leftover vegetables (and more squash, always so much squash ) and some deep-freezer ground beef and pork. Now I've got a whole batch of chili to freeze, because that was a double batch, and I love that.
It's getting chilly here, so time for the annual game of how-long-can-I-last-before-turning-the-heat-on.
I've clicked all your buttons, some quick tags:
@CarolAnnM2 WAY TO GO!
@jane_76 welcome! That sounds like so much to go through. Don't beat yourself up about it- seems you were under a whole lot of stress and with no outlet. You can do it, since you already have before.
@LoraineGB pickleball is so fun! I'm glad you like it, and I hope you can convince Mr B!
Have a great day everyone!5 -
@lauren_989 it's called "Overcoming Binge Eating, Second Edition: The Proven Program to Learn Why You Binge and How You Can Stop" by Christopher G. Fairburn
I'm only a couple of chapters in where he's talking about the different types of eating disorder, so I don't know how good it is yet, but a lot of it resonates.6 -
@jane_76
Welcome! Nice to meet you and thanks for the intro. Do not worry about flaking on the requirements of this group. Check in as often as you can, but know that the chat ebbs and flows.. sometimes it's super busy, and other times not so much. Like many of us, if you come here often you'll find you start to hear us in your head.2 -
@jane_76 Welcome to Waistaways! I look forward to getting to know you.
Thankyou @conleywoods and @CupcakeCrusoe1 -

@jane_76 I am so glad I grabbed you for our team! I love your energy and commitment to renewing your own health after taking such great care of your parents, and enduring your loss, your injuries. I think you are going to be a great addition to the team. There will be ups and downs, but having this little group along with you will help, I can just about guarantee. Of course, I'm nosy (as well as bossy) - if you're comfortable sharing it, can you tell us where you are located?
Something you might find useful - the spreadsheet. Go visit it!
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1BQhVuIOeZ9JyShUWxSgcpQ4_adBy-hCdA2757FwX0GA/edit?usp=sharing
It is fun to check our team and the others for inspiration, cautionary tales (check the week following "spectacular" losses - often there is a bounce back ), to see how many "green" weeks people rack up, etc. A "green" weigh-in is one where you lost some weight. Red for gains, black for no change. ANY amount in a green week is to celebrate! 0.1 pounds? Sure! Month after month, the most successful losers are the people who tend green in however small amounts.
Scroll around. The five teams and all the weekly tallies are on tabs at the bottom. Within our team, scroll all the way to the right side to see the list of names and locations. Go down for the step/exercise stats, who is on "support team" (taking a break from weighing in for a bit, but staying with the team), who is on maintenance, etc. You never have to enter anything yourself - just enjoy spying on everyone from time to time
OK, that is enough of an assignment for our two new members today. Welcome again @Rachelw124 and @jane_764 -
Tuesday Weigh-In
PW: 246.0
CW: 255.2
oof. she's up, she's down. My weight is quite up and I am feeling down. Really regretting committing to so many weekend plans. You can't go out to brunch and lose weight, if you are me at least. Struggling a lot mentally recently, and unfortunately the job I was so excited to get 2 months ago? Not going well. Company is a joke and my role's day-to-day is dreadfully mind-numbing and SO frustrating. I am starting to apply for a new job this week and I have a call with a recruiter on Wednesday. Once again, wish me luck.
Oh. Intro! Hi! I'm Kay, 27, living in Boston and struggling with weight since early college days. I was incredibly off-track in September and can't seem to get back on. I theoretically like to cook and do home workouts and my new apartment building has an indoor pool year-round that I am trying to use for laps/swim workouts. But I have not been consistent with any of those things recently. Feels like I need a reset button. Or to at least go back to what I did in 2018 to start what felt like sustained weight loss (of course I did gain it all back in 2021/this year but still. it was good for a while).
I know I also owe a ton of steps! @ashleycarole86 can you take me off the step team for October? I'm just not keeping up right now!5 -
Good Morning!
I'm going to have to catch up on everyone's posts when I get a minute - but I'll give my quick update.
First off - the Redwoods were AMAZING. If you guys haven't been there, I can't recommend it enough. You can see photos, but until you stand beneath one, you don't fully grasp their immensity. My boys had to drag me kicking and screaming away from them.
Second - the wedding ceremony was quick, easy, and painless - just like I wanted. We were in and out in about 15 minutes and everyone was super nice! And then I went to the grocery store right afterwards to get ingredients for dinner .
My weight changed only a bit, which isn't terrible considering I spent a lot of time in a car with plenty of snacks (although I packed healthier options so it wasn't a total junk fest)

With it being a new month and after 2 months of just being 'off' with my workouts, I'm getting back on track and have a structured plan. I lifted again yesterday and it felt soooo good. I'll be doing lifting 3x/wk with some biking on those days to round out my lunch hour and then yoga on the other 2 days plus I'm really going to emphasize to my hubby (omg it's so weird saying that now) that I NEED to be able to practice on the weekends as well. Then I'm going to try to stay consistent with my 2 miles of walking in the afternoons as well.
After these 8 weeks of the skinny-fat program to get me back into lifting, I was thinking about reading/doing either "Strong Curves" by Bret Contreras or "Thinner Leaner Stronger" by Michael Matthews. Has anybody tried either of these?1 -
@CupcakeCrusoe @ashleycarole86 @CarolAnnM2 - thanks so much for the warm welcome!
@jugar - thanks for the additional info and "assignment"! What a well-oiled machine. Those spreadsheets are terrific.
As for my location, absolutely - I'm in eastern Ontario, Canada, aka where we are currently holding on for dear life to the last warm(ish) days of fall before the white stuff and windchills kick in next month. Fun fact: In summer, we often reach 45 C with the humidex (wild humidity up here) in summer and then dip to -45 C with the windchill in winter, so a 90 C range to make life interesting. I see a lot of us are in similar climates, so I'm sure I'm not alone in needing to fight off hibernation tendencies (carbs! comfort food! sleep!) as the days grow shorter and colder.
Really interesting to read a bit about everyone's lives, as well as successes and challenges... grateful to have been able to make the cut for October!
Today's plan is to eat clean (maybe make some soup?), get my water/vits/supps into me, tackle Day 1 of C25K, and if energy remains, do a quick 15-min strength training video. I'm a huge fan of Caroline Girvan on YouTube.
Wishing everyone a great day!

Greetings Friends!
I haven't done very well with my intention of dropping in each day, have I? Actually, that's not entirely true - I have skimmed the discussion, I just haven't been able to stop and contribute.
Last weekend we went to a memorial service for my best friend who suddenly died during the summer. It was a very moving experience, but also very draining. Luckily it was in Stamford, Lincolnshire, a beautiful town.
And my self-imposed push up challenge has suffered a little. But I did do two lots today - 5, 6 and then 5 again. All thanks to Caroline Girvan's Circuit session (Upper Body today).
It's already shaping up to be a busy week, so I will have to sign off sharpish!
Welcome to all new WaistAways - you're going to love it here 😍7
