It's funny, my husband is about 6' and 175. Normal build, little firm gut on him, just the way he's built despite plenty of cardio. All his clothes are too big for me now, in fact when we bought hockey jerseys for our local team this fall, he got a large and I got a medium and it's not tight on me. I still have a hard time wrapping my mind around it.

If any peops are using MFP **without an external device** and relying on the MFP activity definitions and have recently re-done their numbers .... have a look at my post in Health and Weight loss: Changes to definitions and advice

MFP has changed the activity factor of "not very active", "lightly active", "active", and "very active"

Afaik with an external device and negative calories enabled none of the labels and values matter as at the end of the day your number should equal what the device detected!

I have my activity level set to active and I am linked to my fitbit. It works because it basically doesn't credit my activity until I clear 10k steps, and then conservatively.

Yup. When integration works and negative calories are enabled the original MFP setting is immaterial**
At the end of the day your MFP "adjusted" calories will equal your Fitbit TDEE.

**the only materiality comes with the size of the adjustment. The closer you pre-match your activities the smaller the final adjustment late in the day. Of course this leads to a larger negative adjustment early in the day. Yes, yes, this creates headaches. MFP splits your day in 1440 minutes and gives you a fixed amount of calories per minute. Fitbit adds up your calories as you're earning them leading to the whole mish-mash!

***unless things have changed ;-) These past few years I've been logging on CRONometer, so who knows!

My baseline calorie level is low enough that I don't enable negative calories, lol

Ah. I used to because I was set up as very active which required some level of deliberate activity to be surpassed (in my case at the time about 15750 steps). And on some occasions I would not quite get up to that. There's no right or wrong: just what works for our individualized hamsters🐹!🧐

I still haven't sorted out my fitbit. Mainly because I lost it for a few weeks! (it had migrated into a bag of Christmas bows - and did a fine job hiding). I'm looking forward to getting more engaged. It is exciting to read your stories hear. And inspiring. I've been in a bit of a mental bog it feels pretty well since I got back in November. Rose up for the necessary things. But just that. Hopefully that head space passes after the eye surgeries and a head and heart full of good spirit will come with the spring!!!!

It has been a while since I've strung a few days of 500-600Cal deficits in close proximity myself.

It has also been fun (but unusual) to see the scale clicking down more or less in lockstep!

Doubt it will continue to do so regularly but kind a fun to see 0.2 down every day/other day.

Back into June territory again at 157

Recent minimums were in August at ~155 till the 18th. Then a scale time warp to September 8 when I was up 3.5lbs from that and increasing to up to ~162).

And every doctor visit I have to get on the scale- full winter clothes and shoes. So at least 3 more pounds to make me unhappy. 🙁

Oh my dear, dear Laurie- be grateful you aren’t in my car while I’m driving! The air is positively blue 🤬. I learned a lot of creative vocabulary being a teacher and many years of my husband’s military service. You’d be shocked at how often I drop f-bombs!

However on the surface I’m just a sweet little old lady. 😇

Weight has been all over the place. Surprisingly low at times. Until I changed the batteries in the scale. Damn!!!

    Mean scale

You could zero it one more time 🤷‍♂️
    It's sometimes good for a 0.2 boost 😛

LOOKING AT ONE YEAR: M24 to F25....

Fiber: ok, but I want MOAR: y6ikr0b3azc1.png

    Protein: OK-ish: 0hu0athytfsm.png

    Calories (expected/purported/paper/pretend): are ~370/day
    t4pkzcx5czow.png

BUT, calories per weight change are: ~37/day

So a discrepancy of just about 11% of TDEE. With some uncertainty caused by the fact that my weight ins are not actually daily and there DOES exist cherry picking that may emphasize lows more than highs.

Regardless. This discrepancy is significantly higher for me than it was in the past, especially when calculated over a year. So issues could be: Changes in how I log (looser than before). Changes in how the Fitbit is measuring? (possible, esp. with a potential medical issue where HR *may* show up as higher than would correspond to "work" performed--so something to watch for there) And, last but not least, changes in actual exercise levels with age of both myself and the canine.

In any case: about 10% of TDEE doesn't seem to exist! Which is an easy enough number to adjust for on the fly! -- and, of course, the number should be re-verified down the road ;-)

Wow wow wow! That’s quite the testament to self analysis 🧐.

I know I’d do so much better if I could do a fraction of this kind of work. But I’m not a numbers - Fitbit- trends kind of person. Math challenged and no patience to track like this! Is there any hope for those among us who guesstimate…..

First pretty graph is my **kittened up** weigh ins that are unusually complicated because I'm me

If you logged your weight directly on the Fitbit phone app, for example, you would be able to look up all the relevant graphs already made on trendweight.com Both apps free even if you don't own a device!

Android users can also use Libra (it now has small ads) and iPhone users can use happy scale. Weight level is a good concept

So that takes care of starting and ending weight level for any arbitrary time period.

Change * 3500 is what your body registers :)

Fitbit, apple, Samsung all have some ability to show you your monthly tdee

I don't log on MFP anymore but chronometer (which i do pay for) does provide the calories in and out for any time period on the paid version

For sure MFP does the same. It used to anyway

Calories out should be equal to the tdee from the watch if integrations are working. Should be the same on the watch app and the food logging app or you would need to investigate why not

Calories in is what you log :)

The difference / 3500 is the weight change you would expect.

Now if I telegraph my 10,000 steps because I'm half asleep meandering through the neighborhood vs the 10,000 steps I used to do in mud going uphill, or if I walk around the house and my HR shoots up because I'm yelling, or I'm sick, the poor Fitbit may give me extra calories.

If I don't log half the Ferrero I eat my intake will appear lower than it was.

I may also be a standard deviation up or down in terms of my burning calories as compared to the people who were measured by Mifflin of the Mifflin RMR formula.

So the real difference between intake and expenditure can easily be different than on paper. Hence the fact that weigh didn't move as much as expected

Knowing what my expected weight change was and knowing what it actually registered as, I can see the daily error.

I can express this daily error as a logging error. Either along the lines of i logged 12.5% less than I ate, or that my Fitbit overestimated my tdee by about 11%

For myself I prefer to think of it as Fitbit error. And 10% is an easy enough number to keep in mind on the fly (3000 Cal is 2700; 2000 is 1800, etc) and I don't need to be much more accurate than that to help me manage my weight

As to alternatives? People have always managed to lose and gain weight whether they know the numbers or not!

Eating a bit less or a bit more always works. But there's only one way to eek out maximum Ferrero 😜😜😜😜😜

(As you know I prefer to TRY for longer and more gradual adjustments at maintenance because the imposed slow down makes me look for longer term as opposed to shorter term knee jerk solutions and overall seems to make me look for more gradual changes. It also maximizes the time at reduced weight if we accept that uncontrolled/un arrested weight increases tend to happen fast. Basically my "counter" to things that happen fast is to TRY to go slow!!😜)

But but but - that’s like WORK!

My method is weigh-in in the morning, log the food. Try to eat better. Try to eat less. Sometimes it work - sometimes not so much.

So I’ve gained about 15 pounds since November! Stress, surgery, radiation and the whole health scare + Christmas is not a good mix.

Anyway I feel awkward going to my appointments at the oncology clinic because I’m getting fatter in the midst of all the desperately sick gaunt people. Time to get my *kitten* together!

First of all let's lose the oncology appointment gilt trip, right????🤯 You are you and you have no more and no less of a right or need to be there than anyone else! Regardless of relative looks!!!!!🤔

15lbs is not great but remember that some of it is not real! But whatever is real is probably not helping you be more resilient.

    But: stop the bleeding first.

Then go for the slow long reduction ;)

So I will throw in there the following questions? For you: What is eat better? What is eat less?

Do you ever compare calories of various options: this veggie vs that veggie? This protein vs that protein? This food requires a sauce but that one doesn't?

Just reminding you to aim for the highest satiation and satisfaction combo for the least calories!!!!🤔 Not always looking for less quantity. But always looking to shave calories if possible, acceptable, and wanted.

Last, but not least: much as during initial weight loss I had found great success with eating an apple while logging my meal before eating it (so eating an apple ahead of my meal), eating 0% Greek yogurt for dessert, etc), in later years I've found having a pre nuked and ready to eat 750g of veggies to be a great thing. I just add some to the side of other stuff, esp since I seldom pre-plan.

What are your little tricks to confuse your own hamsters?

And yes. Be mercenary: healthier is only healthier of it is meeting all your goals (including calories). Sure: walnuts are healthy. But to me they are too many calories for what they offer and I will add them in once in a while "as it happens" vs seeking them out. Now if I needed a nutrient from them that would be different! In the meanwhile I will eat almonds or peanuts if I'm watching my calories more and need a serious calories/cold snack boost. And cashews if I'm not :)🤣

Anyway. You should be giving ME tips and tricks my lady because you have been at this (by the looks of it quite successfully) and with way more challenges than some of us and for quite a while now. So just looking forward to your happy updates 😛

Actually I eat well - at meals. It’s the mindless stretches of time between. The snacking or grab n go foods. Walk past the kitchen and grab a slice or two of cheese, a few crackers, chips, … none of which involves actual hunger. Physical satiation isn’t the problem because I’m rarely physically hungry. It’s definitely mental!

I’m struggling to regain my mental/emotional stability. The logical stuff which I’m well aware of doesn’t seem to stop my irrational self. Substituting lo cal foods or preemptive apples don’t matter if what I’m doing is trying to calm myself with food. No food tricks seem to appease my scared anxious brain.

I know better, have done better in the past. I have -I hope- reached a stopping point where I can get control and not lapse further.

Ode to the carrot and celery stick.... with apples plate

(at least the "snacking" will be low cal items as opposed to high cal items!!!
