  • Hello fellow Sleevers! I'm new here. Hoping to reinvigorate myself. I'm 16 mos post op. Had my surgery at Westchester Medical Center in NY by Dr. Thomas Cerabona & Dr. Anthony Maffei. From the day of surgery I needed to lose 64-69 lbs. I lost 42 lbs in 5 months. Then nothing happened for a long time. And now I've put 16 lbs back on. I'm trying every support group I can and utilizing all the tools I can find to get back on track. Today was my first day using myfitnesspal and boy am I surprised at how quickly things add up! I'm getting too much protein and I only have 20 more calories to reach the day's max - and I haven't had dinner! Well, I didn't reach my water goal, so I guess that's going to be dinner. Wish me luck! & Let's talk....
  • dont beat yourself up. like they say.."its a tool" at least MFP shows you how many calories you are eating and you can see where you need to cut down. think of the happiness you felt as you were losing the weight before and fight to get back to that place. we are here to support you and i wish you lots of luck
  • Morning! I got my sleeve 2/10 and I really have only lost a total of 24# preop included. I am kind of slow it seems so I am restarting myself and trying to eat all I am supposed to. For a while I lost interest in anything related to food. Eating is a chore that I dislike. Ha I know that sounds weird coming from somebody who looks like Jabba the Hut but whatevahhh... I dont care about eating but I know that I have to eat to lose. MFP is helping me to track my intake and its the easiest thing I ever used - at first I resisted using MFP because it was different from what I was used to. What a closed mind I had. Sorry I was so stubborn. Looking forward to a great week. My goal for March is be down 10# and exercise 4x a week for minimum of 45 minutes and drink 64 oz water daily. That's the best I can gun for right now. I have to start somewhere people.

I'm starting out at 334. My goal is around 170 or so. I've been on the diet rollercoaster most of my life. WW was my usual methods, though I've branched off into south beach occasionally. The most I've lost was about 60 lbs. a few years ago and now I'm about 50 lbs. heavier than my top weight then. I finally decided that enough was enough.

I'm the middle of the pre-op and in the process of getting all my clearances and losing the 20 lbs. required by the surgeon before they'll operate. (7 down,13 more to go!) I have never seen so many doctors in such a short time in my life. It's really good to read other people's experiences so I will have some idea of what to expect. Maybe then it won't see so scary. I'll be having my sleeve surgery in Albany with Dr. Trivedi provided everything goes well.

MFP has been a great help with tracking. So convenient! (And so cheap!) Anyway, feel free to friend me. :-)
  • Hi, my name is Melissa Park. I'm a 33-yr-old nurse from Columbia, MD. I had vertical sleeve gastrectomy on January 3 at Johns Hopkins Bayview and I'm down 34 lbs so far!!
  • Hi there! I had my sleeve August 29, 2011 in Tijuana, Mexico by the amazing Dr. Pompa. I have lost 50lbs to date however I have done nothing to assist my sleeve and that 50lb is also a 4 month stall... so here I am - getting back on track! And hopefully using my sleeve as a tool and not a magic fix!!!

Im in Canada and as far as I know - the surgery is not readily available the way it appears to be in the U.S! So glad to hear docs in the U.S are performing it!

Hello Everyone , I'm having my Surgery March 30th with Dr Aceves in Mexicali Mexico....
Can't wait for my New journey
  • My name is Carol and I had my VSG on 2/23/12. I was intending to have a DS at Duke but due to complicaitons from previous surgeries, when they went in they could not complete it so Dr Sudan did only the first part which is the VSG. This is the surgery I might have chosen in the first place but Medicare does not cover the sleeve. It was very disorienting to go under thinking I would wake up with one surgery and to have another one. But due to all the mess I had internally, I don't intend to let them open me up again unless really necessary so I will stay a sleever and learn to ROCK THIS SLEEVE !!

And it has been working really well for me. I lost almost 20 pounds pre-op to get my fatty liver smaller by doing a couple of protein shakes a day and a small meal per day. But I have done well since surgery and am walking every day despite a bad knee. I did great during the 3 week liquid phase immediately post-op but am having a little difficulty moving on to soft foods. I do great with scrambled eggs or string cheese but if I move on to anything like chicken or tuna salad I get extreme nausea and have even thrown up. That plus getting in my pysch medications (a couple of which are large) that get stuck cause me trouble.

But the great news is that I am off all diabetic meds (and I was having 5 insulin injections a day plus pills), my cholesterol med and as of last Wednesday, now my blood pressure meds. My pill minder is looking almost skimpy compared to pre-op.
  • Good After Noon... My name is Wanda. I am 35 years old. I had my surgery done on September 29th At St. Joseph's Health Center in Hamilton, Ontario. My doctor was Dr. D. Hong.

My heaviest weight was 355 lbs.
My Pre-op weight was 340 lbs

  • Welcome - I have had one knee replaced at about your weight but my weight continued to climb and climb so I had the VSG. Now the other knee really bothers me if I walk much at all but I am really trying. Of course, the docs taking me off NSAIDs did not help

  • Hi! I'm Jennifer from Boston. I'm 31 and have been overweight my entire life. Enough was enough and I joined a surgical weight loss program in fall of 2011. I was finally ready for surgery in February and had my sleeve done on 2/27/2012 at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, MA. I lost ~30 pounds before the surgery and have lost about 25 pounds since surgery. I am sooooo excited for my new life and find support invaluable and know I wouldn't have made it this far without it. Please feel free to friend me/message me.

I joined MFP end of Jan of this year. I started the process of weight loss surgery mid Jan of 2012 and working towards a surgery date. I have gotten the ok from the Psych., Physical Therapist. I am sure my Nut. would sign off too since everytime I see her she says I am doing great and I bring in a week of MFP logs for her to look at and record. My local Bariatic program has a team approach and all members of the team have to approve you are ready for surgery before you get a surgery date and send your insurance paperwork in to be pre approved. They review cases every 2 weeks so I am hoping to hear the end of this month that I am getting a surgery date. Will have the sleeve done. Would like the surgery to be in July so I can take vacation time from work when it is slower at work.
I have been overweight all my life, I weighed over 11 pounds when I was born! I joined Weight Watchers at the age of 10 I think! I have never been at my correct weight. I wish I would have done this before being 48 years old. Even though overweight I am pretty active but lately my knees have been bothering me alot to the point my left knee needs a knee replacement but my knee dr told me I am too young for it so I am hoping the WLS will help me loose the weight and keep it off for good this time!

    Glad I found this group!
I have lost 28 pounds using MFP to take my food intake, exercise and water.

I had my sleeve 8/8/11. My Dr is Dr Hammer in Springfield, IL (hi to the others of his on this thread!!). I am down 66ish lbs since surgery, 94 total. I had a leak at 2 months so I was out of the losing phase for about 4 months but back in the swing again!
  • Hi,
Im still pre-op, but my doctors office just called and said they faxed my paperwork over today. They said i should have an answer in 3-7 business days. Fingers crossed to be sleeved by "cinco de mayo"!

FYI: My last weigh in was yesterday at 339.2 lbs

Hello everyone! I am Pam Bratton. I had my DS, basically a sleeve with the intestinal bypass, December 13 (it was a Friday!) 2002 at UCLA. My heaviest was a little over 270, I lost down to 256 for the surgery and now weigh in at 125~128 and have a goal of 120~125. I am about 5feet 3~4 inches.(4 if I lie!) I have a twin sister who had the RNY about three years before I had my surgery and she tips in at about 140~145 and is perfectly happy.
So I guess I am an old timer around these parts!

Hi. I'm so excited to have found this group. I had VSG 12/21/10 in Indianapolis, Dr. Mandelbaum. Highest weight I ever remember was 320, on date of surgery I was 308. Today I'm at 190, goal weight 160. 15 months out I'd hoped to be a lot closer to my goal, but I got stalled with a bulging disc last May, in bed couldn't move at all for 6 weeks. Recovering from that took some time, and took my focus off doing all the things I needed to be doing for weight loss. But that's what I love about the sleeve, it still helps me eat the right portions, and when I am focused on eating the right things and exercising daily, the weight does still come off.

In March I really focused, tracking all my calories here, exercising daily, etc. and was disappointed to lose "only" 2 pounds but when I saw my medical dr for a follow up (she sees me every 3 months or so after surgery) I'd lost quite a bit of fat and gained muscle. so my BMI had gone down, even though my total weight hadn't moved much.

I think my biggest struggle now is making the best choices for what I eat, and MFP is helping me with that. I'm lucky (in some aspects) in that I can eat almost anything as long as the portion is small, and not have a problem digesting it. So if I make bad choices it's possible to eat sugar and fatty things, and that could potentially be a bad thing, if I can't continue to eat for health instead of taste or immediate pleasure/gratification.

To those few who are getting ready for the sugeries, I know I was so nervous, but now I'm absolutely convinced i did the best thing, and am so happy that I did it. I may not be at goal, but i can do any physical activity i want to, instead of having to stop after 5 minutes because my heart rates so high or everything aches/hurts. It wasn't the "easy way out" and it wasn't a quick fix, but it was the tool to help me eat in a smart structured way for several months, and continue the exercise program. It's certainly the longest I've ever been able to keep weight off (have gained and lost weight several times over my adult life).

Hi everyone. I had VSG surgery 9/28/11. To date, I've lost 50 lbs. Seems I'm a slow loser! I am really struggling right now and am looking for support and motivation and would like to just hang with some other VSGers!

Hi I'm CollieDebbie and I had my VSG in Mexico with Dr. Alvarez on April 20, 2012. I am now in stage 4 of recovery eating and looking to set up MyFitnessPal to help me track my progress. Right now I have it set to 1000 cal 75 gm protein and whatever carbs and fat it had. I'm sure that's not right. Any tips on MFP appreciated. I started at 257 at pre-diet on April 6, 248.8 on surgery day on April 20, and am now 225 on May 7! I'll take that.

Hi I'm Michele, I started Options through Kaiser last summer and was side tracked by breast cancer. Double mastectomy and chemo finished I'm cancer free and cleared and backed in the class again. Hope to have VGS in late July. I can't wait! Using this site while in class. Started out at 280 and am down to 264. Trying to get to 250 for surgery. Feel free to add me, I'd love the support of fellow sleevers.
    Michele :)
