If I had more to spend, which I could afford easily, what would you recommend? Just asking to make an informed decision. And have to justify it to my wife…

Thanks for the great advice everyone. I have a friend that owns a bike shop (500 miles away from me unfortunately) that told me to buy a Trek or a Specialized because everything else under $1000 will have poor components. I can’t buy a Specialized or a Scott since there are no dealers near me and I won’t buy a bike I can’t…

I am already an avid biker. Done tons of metric centuries. Two different bike shops gave me an estimate of $500 dollars to fix it. They say the drivetrain needs to be completely replaced and I believe them. l am an engineer that fixes most things but the bike is done unless I invest the money in parts and I don’t have the…

My PCP said BMI is not a hard rule. I had an overweight BMI but he said I was a healthy weight based on my muscle mass. Talk to your doctor so you can understand what a healthy weight for you should be.

I’m doing this also I suppose. Sine I haven’t had any alcohol in years (don’t like the taste) maybe I don’t count.

I am once again confused because deg F and deg C measure only temperature. If you know what an eV is it seems like you know what you’re talking about.
-
The conversion to Fahrenheit is not linear and I have no clue what the numbers mean in relationship to C. The conversion from deg F to deg C is absolutely linear. I’m not sure what you mean.

I’m not a huge candy fan and we give all of it away so it’s no big deal to us. I handed out 150 full sized candy bars in 90 minutes. I had to turn kids away by 7:30. We are a densely populated neighborhood with nice sidewalks. They drop kids off from other neighborhoods here. It’s a fun night here. Everyone sits on their…

My doctor said based on my frame size and blood work I should not lose more weight. He told me he would write a letter to my insurance company saying I was at a healthy weight if I needed one. As a biomedical engineer that used to work clinically with doctors all the time, I found his explanation to make sense. Yes, I bike…

I think you need to ask your doctor what they think. I was obese at one time on the BMI scale and my doctor told me not to lose more weight. He told me don’t become one of those cyclists with eating disorders to lose more weight. It really depends on the person.

Thanks for the understanding. It sounds like we have almost the same story except I am in my 40's.

Sorry, retaining fluid
-
Thanks for all the help everyone. I have seen several cardiologists and we all agree that it does not seem I’m retaking fluid. I am on all kinds of diuretics if for no other reason than they allow me to breathe comfortably but we need to dial them back because my sodium level is dangerously low. Was hoping for that magic…

Thanks for the help everyone. I admit I am in a strange situation. My internist has passed me on to my specialists. Frankly, my internists seem more like a herd of unusually intelligent squirrels than a bunch of doctors, but my cardiologist is helping me find new ones. I don't think I am gaining any fat. The fact that I'm…

I’ve been classified as permanently disabled by the state of Maryland. I don’t normally describe myself that way but I’m up to be your friend also. I have heart issues. What’s your story?
-
I quit cold turkey. I was going on a vacation to see my nephew for the first time and nobody there ever knew I smoked. So I just didn’t. I loaded up the car, said a prayer to St. Judas (the patron saint of lost causes) and drove from DC to Ohio. When you are ready to do it, you will be able to. Wish I had better advice.
-
I’m Catholic. Does that count?
-
As a biomedical engineer, I can tell you this could make sense. Your insides push down on your diaphragm, which is the muscle that lets you breathe by basically moving your chest. It is theorized that if you diaphragm spasams you get hiccups. Now that you are adding less force on your diaphragm the stimulus that caused the…

I don’t know. I had a registered dietitian tell me to try it because she says there is evidence that it works.

I’ve never had one but may get to do it soon due to other health issues I’m having even though I am not of that age. I used to design anesthesia equipment a long time ago and I can assure you that you don’t have to worry about saying anything you’d be embarrassed by and be able to remember it later. These people are…

I don’t think it’s going to kill you. You can find a way to use your calories to make you not hungry. Everything is hard at first but you can do this.

I’m a biomedical engineer. CICO must work due to the laws of the universe. If you can’t acknowledge that, we can’t have a useful conversation. The problem with CICO is that it is somewhat challenging to estimate the CI and really hard to estimate the CO. For most people the general rules work, but I have seen people that…
-
CICO has to work. It’s a basic law of the universe. If we can’t agree on that, we can’t move forward. However, estimating the CO is a lot more challenging than many people (especially those of us losing weight) like to admit. Even the CI is an estimate. Not every piece of pork or broccoli that weighs the same amount…

I quit soda, but I drink carbonated water just about every day. Squeeze some lemon or lime juice in it. I love it.
