Tried out the hamstring on 6 miles of groomed trails with some hills today and that didn't go as well as the 4 mi flat on roads yesterday. Ended up icing at work a couple of times. Did 2 miles less than I was intending today so ideally I'd make up some of that tomorrow, but given the way it feels tonight, I don't think I…

Tried out the hamstring with an easy 4 mi road run after getting beat up by my PT yesterday. She suspects that I might have a fallen cuboid bone on my foot and did some weird procedure to get it back in place. Apparently it is really rare, and she called the other PT over to feel my foot. The run didn't go too…

Welcome @BrookeRunningMom! The 50K discussion is really interesting to me as well. I just signed up for my 50K in mid March so it is all starting to look real now. One of my issues is going to be getting ready for the hills. I need to make some field trips to get some better hills than I can get at home. I did one 50K 4…

The two coolest things were the owls and the view of the ice-covered reservoir with the dim glow of the sunset and the city lights on the horizon. There is one loop of the course where you are basically surrounded on all sides with water. It was awesome.

Reporting for today's effort, I decided to give my hamstring a break after my epic race last night and the family and I went out for a hike this morning but the surface was even icier than last night at the race. After 1 mile, my husband and son gave up, and then I did an extra 2.5 mi power hike on pavement (15 min/mile)…

Yes, the temps were really nice (I wore shorts and didn't even wear my gloves for the second loop) but all that snow and ice was compressed making for a very tricky surface. I think I should have made a pair of "screw shoes". About 200 people did the half marathon and about 350 did the quarter marathon. It is a…

Brief check in before I try to get some sleep: #BrutallyAwesome was the tagline for the Winter Night Half Marathon I did tonight at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis. It certainly lived up to its name! The 3-4 in of snow from earlier was packed down into a sheet of ice in most places on the trail and the trails were…

The Monumental Marathon is a really well run race and a great course--you should totally do it! My husband has done the half for 4 years in a row. If I ever decide to try to BQ, that will be the one I do. I'll probably wait until I turn 50 first though so I have a better shot. In the meantime I'll focus more on…

Thanks! That sounds like good advice. I'll have to see if our local bike shop has it. If not, Body Glide or something like that would help at least a little I'd imagine. The melting hasn't really started yet, but today it should start in earnest (and then freeze again overnight). I am still debating making some "screw…

Went to the nature park to practice running the snowy trails before my race Saturday but alas, they seem to plow (??!!) most of the nature park trails (still a thin coating of snow though). Oh well, not really any different than running in the subdivision. Got my 4 miles in early when it was still 12 degrees out before we…

Thanks everyone for the advice! I tend to wear mostly Injinji toe socks (including a couple of pairs of wool ones) because I have a couple of misbehaving toes that are much happier when they are separated (kind of like siblings!). I am wondering if I’d be better off with “regular” socks so the toes can keep each other warm…

@skippygirlsmom Good suggestion. I was planning on wool already (and that should help with warmth) but I think dry isn’t going to happen on trails with melting snow and 38 degrees.

I am also way behind on the comments! I'll also try to catch up but so far behind in work right now after being sick last week. I water walked in the lazy river at our rec center on Monday, then Tuesday it was super cold and I just couldn't bring myself to run outside for the first time this year, so ran around the indoor…

I am also aiming for my first 50 miler in the fall using some variation of one of the plans that is out there. Back to back long runs (as others have suggested) is what I've heard is the key. My plan is to gear up for a 50K in the spring (I've done one before but not as hilly as the one I have planned) and then do several…

This. I just bought myself a real HR monitor because I was very skeptical of my Fitbit running readings (same kinds of numbers as yours). Today I ran 10 mi. According to my Fitbit Alta, my average HR for the activity was 172 bpm. According to my Garmin chest HR monitor it was 135 bpm. Quite a difference in how I view those…

@katharmonic Congratulations on your race! @_nikkiwolf_ Hope you feel less bruised soon! I don't trust myself skiing anymore, so now I snowshoe instead  @Starflight00 Welcome! I started back from nothing in July so we are all a work in progress. Going slow is good advice. Injuries are no fun! @kevaasen I am also…

Took a real rest day on Friday while I was still recovering from my bad cold this week. Finally got a good night's sleep on Friday night so I felt considerably better today. Still wasn't entirely sure about running 10 mi after being sick for several days, but went out in the snow and felt OK. Also noticed that my resting…

I've been there several times! I am going snowshoeing in Breckenridge in March and hope to stop in while I am there.

Trying to get back on track here after 2 weeks of traveling. @RespectTheKitty I can relate. Only slept about 3 h last night thanks to my coughing but got a prescription today so that hopefully I can sleep better tonight (took a nap this afternoon). Contemplated not running but the weather was warm and snow/ice free today so I thought I better take advantage of it. Ran 4 mi slowly…

Well it has been a while! Too much traveling and then trying to get caught back up with running and my work stuff. I was home for about 18 h on Jan 1-2 and then left again for sunny but cold Florida for the rest of the week. Managed to get one run in at home in 0 degree weather before I left and then another in 40 degree…

January goal is to keep increasing the overall mileage to eventually get to a 50K in March. Plus my first half marathon in a year and half on Jan 20. Start logging food again (to try to get to racing weight) and come up with a more consistent strength training schedule now that PT is winding down. Today was a rest and…

Wasn't able to check in for a couple of days since I left my computer charging cord at home and only realized it partway through our travels! Finished out the last two days of 2017 with an epic 15 miler (for me, anyway) through the snow and over a mountain, followed by a longer than expected 6.8 mi run the next morning.…

@MobyCarp Don’t think of it as getting older, think of it as gaining a new age group where you are the young one! Happy Birthday! It is still cold and windy here in NY visiting my husband’s family. Forced myself to get out and get my 4 mi in on the partially cleared suburban sidewalks after waiting 5 min to get across 6…

This morning did my strength activities followed by a run with my husband and son on the Walkway Over the Hudson in Poughkeepsie, NY. Beautiful cold morning (though not as cold as with some of you!). Phone died in the cold before I could get the family selfie at the end. Goals this month: 90 miles, maintain weight, PT and…

Got up at 5 am and left the family behind in the hotel room. First went down to the gym to crank out my PT stretches and strength and my 2 week strength program for the day. Then put on (a lot of) clothes (18 degrees F) and went out to run 4 mi on the dark bike path near the hotel in Wheeling. Then off to sit in the car…

On the dog conversation: Two stories-- My husband was bitten while running in the rural Indiana neighborhood we used to live in by an off leash German Shepard (who was out with his owner and granddaughter who were riding a 4 wheeler-another story, don't get me started). The bite got infected and took a long time to heal…

Several days of a body weight exercise program to whip me into shape is kicking my "kitten". Ran 11 mi on grass and trails after stairs and a hilly 7 miler yesterday. Legs were somewhat jello like but still I persisted. Also tried out my headlamp in the snow briefly this morning --it was definitely the warp speed…

Tomorrow is going to be up again because I am sore all over after 2 days in a row of longish runs and body weight exercises. Ate all the street tacos for lunch but they were earned after 11 miles running (and healthy!). Tried to minimize the chips and focus on the fresh veggies and lean protein. SW 155.7 35.5% BF (July 19,…
