Did it again.... Oh.... Have we really crossed the Rubicon of Fatuous Snarks? Do posters here have no responsibility regarding the veracity of the notions they peddle? Are the people who turn to them for advice mere fools for trusting them? No one in this "discussion" has asked for "expert medical advice" level…

Do what you like. I simply asked a question. It is rather telling that it turned into a debate.

Thank you for taking the time to track this down.

Screwed up that last post… I have wondered about that… Does the MFP algorithm make any adjustments to its recommendations as you lose weight?
-
Don’t know if this will be of any help, but I also was having a hard time eating enough protein. Then I saw a post where someone mentioned that they concentrate on hitting their daily protein number and let the other macros fall where they may. I adopted that approach and have since had no problem eating enough protein.

Yes. Maybe, “gradually reduce your deficit as you approach your goal weight”? BTW, @paperpudding, your profile pic looks scrumptious!

I keep my scale next to my bed.

Thank you for your comment, Elisa. It’s good to hear that I am not the only one who wondered about this issue.
-
Thank you for taking the time to reply and explain your position. For the record, I do not recall who provided the advice in the post that prompted me to ask my original question.
-
Hah… Duly noted!
-
My apologies for being too curt in my previous reply.
-
Thank you for the comment, Scarlett. Glad to know it was not just me!

No, it does not really matter to me what anyone else thinks. Apparently, however, what I think mattered enough to you to let me know your thoughts on the subject. Once again… I do not practice nor do I advocate for high-speed weight loss. I merely asked a question about the origins of a specific piece of advice being put…

I never advocated that you should try to lose two pounds a week. I asked a question.
-
I never said that.

Thank you, @Retroguy2000. Those are precisely the questions I am asking. Here is some background. I was looking at another discussion in the MFP Community section in which a newcomer who was having difficulty getting started asked for some guidance. In response, a person who was more of a veteran told him something to the…

That is precisely the meaning of the word conjecture: a guess about something based on how it seems and not on proof. Historically, conjecture ("common sense based on individuals' personal experience, plus the limited factual information available") has been used to rationalize such things as:* Phrenology (the study of the…

I am not arguing with the logic. Nor am I proposing rapid loss near goal or any other alternative approach. I am merely asking about the origin of this advice.
-
Could ‘t agree more. That’s calorie awareness in a nutshell.
-
Thanks much to everyone who took the time to reply to my question. I had seen this advice being put forth as unquestionable fact in various discussions here on MFP, and I was wondering where it came from. Based on the above, I guess it is safe to say that it may be more conjecture or popular consensus than anything else.

The notion that your metabolism, intestine, stomach, or <insert body part or function of your choice> has a mind of its own and needs to be tricked into doing something it normally does not want to do.
-
Also, maybe I worded my original post poorly, but it seems like we may be talking about two different things. I was not referring to lowering you calorie intake. I was referring to the advice that if you are targeting loss of a pound per week, you should lower this to a half pound per week when you get within 10 pounds of…

Thanks for the comments. I understand what you are both saying, but where do the values (10 pounds, half) come from? Is there some specific scientific basis for this advice? Or are “10” and “half” merely nice sounding, easily relatable numbers to support an opinion?

A pound a week? And a year from now you will look back amazed at how you dropped 52 pounds.
-
Do you gain every day? How much do you gain? What is your daily calorie goal? I also doubt it is muscle…

I also experience weight upticks after eating out. I always figured this is because the fundamental goal of a restaurant is not necessarily to serve you nourishing and healthful food, but rather food that gives you pleasure and satisfaction so you keep coming back for more.

OLD JOKE: Want to lose 10 pounds of ugly fat? Cut off your head…

First, congratulations on your drop from 180 to 120. As I get older, especially since getting hooked up with MFP, I am starting to understand that gluttony and starvation are not our only two choices. There is a third option called, moderation. IMHO, I would say define your goal, let the app calculate your needs, and then…
