  • It happens. I've been on for a while, lost about 50 pounds, net. I was down to having lost about 90, but life isn't always nice (that's my short version, I'll spare you the specifics). The good news is, you can always keep trying. Getting more help is never a bad idea. Blessings!
  • Wait ... smoking? I thought that I might have found my group, here, but this just got too edgy for me.
  • First of all, 5 mph is a phenomenal walking pace! Good for you! As for the app, that sounds really off. At my weight, and at closer to 4 mph, I walk about 100 calories/mile. I would definitely check the profile settings and see if there's something inaccurate there. If you have something, it might not be a bad idea to use…

  • I hear you. Ups and downs happen. Life gets hectic with the kids (I have five), it's tough to log things. Miss a day, have a bad week ... yep. Been there, done that. Currently getting back on track from Relapse #5 or so ... . Not sure what to offer for help. It sounds like you already know the issues. Do the best you can.…
  • When it's all said and done, you can't make him lose weight. You can only control you. No matter how right you are. If he's really trying to undermine you, then you have a different problem. But if the issue is that he's just no on board, ... don't try to force him. Losing weight is tough enough for one. Trying to be the…
  • How have I missed that this thread exists? I'm going to go with villain.
  • I see the issue. It is a lot more challenging when the tempting stuff is readily available. I have the advantage of being the buyer of groceries, so my wife gets treats that I don't really want. I'd suggest having a heart-to-heart conversation about it. You're trying to make some changes and are struggling with…
  • Just try to think ... How would such a thing work? If, somehow, it could magically pull fat out of your body, wouldn't it have to go somewhere? After use, the wrap is wet, not covered in fat. Straight-up gimmick. If you want to go to the party, fine. But I'd advise against buying anything,
  • Granted. Instead, it's going to happen tomorrow. And you know it today. (No, you can't avoid it.) (Seriously, sorry about the car. That sucks.) I wish that I'd planted the garden this year instead of letting it get away from me.
  • The stock answer to your original question is that muscle weighs more than fat, but is leaner. You'll have stretches of time when your additional muscle weight balances out fat loss, and nothing changes on the scale even though you have visible changes. Weight is only one measure, and it's very incomplete. Also, three…
  • Main downfall? Like, just one? Not sure I could narrow it down that well ... Here are a few leading candidates: - Drinking my calories. I liked Pepsi. I like sweet tea. I drank too much of both. - Driving. I developed the habit of eating (and drinking one of those sugar bombs I just mentioned) in the car. I had some long…
  • I've begun re-reading the Wheel of Time series, so I'm reading "The Eye of the World" by Robert Jordan. I'm listening to the audio book of "Nicholas Nickleby" by Charles Dickens. Look, you have your jam at the gym, I have mine!
  • Strong-looking ankle!
  • Two main choices ... either be super careful (egg whites, etc.) or have some fun and just watch the rest of the day. Assuming that this is kind of a special event, not something you do all the time, that's the way I'd play it. Make it your big meal for the day, make sure to get in some good exercise time, and call it all…

  • I am so sorry. I live in a small town, and have only been heckled once. It would be awful to put up with it all the time. I am so, so sorry. I usually don't suggest headphones while on roads, but they're an option. I strongly prefer exercising outside, and cycling is definitely my favorite, but a gym might be a safer…
  • Understand completely. Things can be very difficult, and there are ups and downs. I've gained and lost weight, and I can certainly feel it when I get on my bike. Hills that were no problem two years ago are very challenging again. Almost every answer I could give boils down to some kind of cliche. How about, "You haven't…

  • First of all: welcome to MFP, then! My suggestion in this case would be to set your goal at 1400 and see how it feels. See how you do. And if your days off are more sedentary than your working days (which it sounds like they are), do different goals on the different days. I imagine that if I worked 3 days a week as an…

  • Actually, I find that tremendously helpful. I've cut nearly 1000 calories per day with improved nutrition by getting information from Vegan/vegetarian sites and friends. I haven't made the switch and don't think I ever will, but there's a lot of great information out there.

  • Salembambi's not wrong ... There are people who believe that if you have an opinion, you must resent their other opinion. So they get proactively defensive. And so they assume that you're pushy, even though I'm sure you're not. I've never actually met a pushy vegetarian or Vegan. But I know a lot of my fellow omnivores who…

  • Username: KenLeonard I haven't been using it lately for a variety of reasons, but intend to be right back into it. I do need to be more careful when I use it for cycling. Obviously, the calorie count it calcs isn't correct for that. (Although it's a lot of fun ...)
  • Trying to listen to: Charles Dickens' grandson on NHPR's "The Exchange." Hearing: My kids playing "My Little Pony: Songs of Ponyville." Sigh ... .
  • First of all, I strongly suggest that you get to know your local bike shop and have them check out your bike, and also measure you for it. Those people want everyone to love cycling (by the way, "biking" is often used to refer to motorcycling, "cycling" is bicycling ... jargon to avoid looking like the noob which I was ...…
  • Too bad about the burn, but 9 minutes off of a ride like that is tremendous! Way to go! I love the feeling of knowing that I'm riding up a hill that used to force me to walk, and shaving off time from long rides means a lot. Very, very proud of you!
  • ^^ That is what you need to remember. A little coffee? Some cookies? Sure. Just watch your total calories and make sure that you're getting your nutrients. Think of it this way: If eating a cookie or two each day keeps you from having a craving that leaves you tempted to eat a dozen of them one day, you're ahead of the…
  • Thanks, wellbert. That makes a lot of sense. I think that I might halve the calorie count for the return trip in my thinking, just for the purpose of making sure that I'm making my goals there.

  • With a smile that pretty, no one's ever said it? There's something seriously wrong with just about everyone you know, then. As for me ... Eh, maybe. Not so much physically, although my wife has said a number of things to express that she thinks so. That my gut sticks out a lot less than it used to and my arms aren't as…
  • My ex-wife sang a little ditty: "Butterball, butterball, Daddy is a butterball, Yellow rolls of far and all, Oh, Daddy is a butterball." ... teaching my then-5 and -7 year-old sons to sing along. (I was wearing a yellow shirt, thus the yellow rolls of fat.) Easily the worst thing anyone's said.
  • Best of luck. I've had to do some restarting, too, after a very rough end of last year. Still ... new year's as good a time as any to get back on track, right?
  • Hint: If it's been done, then it's possible.
