  • totally doable. you need about 10 weeks to train, assuming you can run 3 miles to start with. Sign yourself up - that's excellent motivation.
  • If this is so "incorrect" why does the 30 day shred work so well? I've been using lower weights so I can complete my sets and yet my arms are significantly more toned than before.
  • I think you're accidentally double-booking it. MFP's description of "lightly active" is a bit more than what I consider light activity, so I think all your everyday activity should probably already be covered by that.
  • I would guess that part of the problem is that you counted wrong as well - that's nearly 5 beats per second - counting manually (I know *I* couldn't count that fast accurately). the comment earlier about it being possible with runs of V-tach is true - but that's being counted on a cardiac monitor, not by checking your…
  • My first 5k I finished in a bit over 36 minutes. Expect that it's going to be crowded and you're not going to make your best time. I had to walk a piece because the entire last 2/3 of the race were uphill (grr!). Just keep it slow and steady, and really, for the most part making yourself not stop is a mental game - you…
  • Go to a running store and get fitted for good running shoes. Expect to pay ~$100+ for them. This will reduce the risk of injuries, which will stop you before you start. Buy some good running socks. Put these on, exit the house, and go. Many people have had success with some of the couch 2 5k programs, so you could also…
  • If you're counting and it still losing the expected weight, then it's clearly fine. If not, well, then it isn't.
  • I don't seem to have a problem with cramping unless I'm really overdoing it, and sometimes not even then. I run some pretty long runs (9-12 miles) so not having water isn't an option. I generally drink something going out the door and often eat something around mile 6 as well.
  • My skeleton weighs more than 110, so I'm going for something more like 140.
  • I guess it's important to define "blow it" if you still manage to land UNDER your maintenance level, you're still moving in the right direction.
  • What she said - If you're having that much trouble sticking to it, perhaps you set your goals too high for the level of effort you're able to put in at this point. Even a half pound a week is better than nothing if you can do it consistently.
  • I work out at night too. Make sure you leave yourself some calories from your exercise and eat something :) I sometimes go for a turkey sandwich or cheerios with milk and a banana. If I try something higher calorie, like nuts, I feel that the serving or 2 doesn't make me feel like I've eaten enough - I need bulk. The other…
  • Kohl's (if you have on nearby) has a "no questions asked" return policy. I brought back jeans I had shrunk out of and swapped them out for a new pair in a smaller size. They were proud to talk to me about other swaps people had made. I was shocked. Bringing back my husband's jeans and another pair of mine next week. Those…
  • Wow - people are being rather unforgiving here. Yes - diet needs improvement - I'm sure she's heard the message. At 18, I had no bank account and I didn't have my own car. Going to the grocery to go shopping for family food was not a feasible option for me. Step back and remember what it was like to be living with your…
  • If your 4 yo isn't too big now, s/he soon will be. I end up running after the kids go to bed, or while my husband gets them ready for bed. I'm NOT a morning person, and although I'm tired as anything by then, I force myself out the door. I wear reflectors for safety - very important. As it stays light later, it gets easier…
  • As long as you count it as part of your calories for the day, it shouldn't matter - of course, don't skip dinner just so you cna have a few glasses of wine...
  • When I start running, I have to up my calories to continue losing. On the days I run, I sometimes fall under 1200, but I try to make up for it on the other days and net close to 1500 - a bit over my BMR. I also have a really hard time catching up with my water retention - My hands feel noticibly swollen all the time. It's…
  • I think that this "rule" was based on the idea that people would eat a huge meal and then not burn it off. It has nothing to do with proper digestion or anything like that. If you're being careful about tracking calories, there's no problem with eating late if you still have the calories. I don't get out to run until after…
  • This - He sees you getting up and doing something about your weight and it makes him feel worse that he isn't. It's his own fault, yes, but he piles it on top of the supposed "inconvenience" of you taking away his TV... He needs to grow up and stop making your success into his problem.
  • From what I can see, you're not eating 1200 calories per day after accounting for exercise. The bare minimum you should be eating is 1200 AFTER your exercise calories. Some days, your net calories are in the 800-1000 range, unless I'm reading wrong. I was in the same boat - lost 6 lbs in 2 weeks then started upping my…
  • I sure hope it's not - it's the only time I have! My husband leaves for work before 6 AM and I don't get home until 6 PM. After spending time with my 2 kids and swim lessons, dance class, other activities, then tucking them into bed, I get to head out for my runs. Tonight, I didn't even leave until after 9. The only…
  • When you're exercising, your muscles store extra water. when you take days off, it balances out. I always find I weigh more on the mornings after I run at night. Just keep doing what you're doing - it will all balance out in the end.
  • I drank caffeine-free coke (full-sugar) before I even left bed. It helped immensely.
  • I was keeping my calories at or below 1200. I lost initially, then stopped. I found once I kept my net calories over 1300, I started losing again - that's WITH eating back most of my exercise calories. I can't see your diary, but when you say "strict" that's the first thing I thought of. I agree with the water comment., I…
  • Strong - with Splenda and organic half-and-half. If I can't use the real cream, I skip coffee entirely.
  • Ha! What Alissa said, except mine is Alisa - like A-Lisa...sigh
  • The iron is probably irritating your stomach - that strange achy feeling it causes might be interpreted as hunger as well.
  • I also run at night (after my kids are in bed), so I completely sympathize. I've taken to eating several stalks of celery with a low-cal dip at night when I get hungry. I've also had success with the 100-calorie popcorn packs if I have the calories to spare.
  • I would think that the first step would be to consult a doctor to get your knee examined more closely. Every knee injury is different and what works for someone else might not work for you. You certainly don't want to make the situation worse.
