Clothes, buy new ones or get them refitted?

Is it cheaper to buy new clothes or have the old stuff altered? I have some almost new shirts that I would like to wear but they don't fit anymore. What are some thoughts on this?

i suppose it depends on how expensive the clothes are and how much that you plan to lose.

i bought one set of clothes about halfway through my weight loss, and then waited until i was done losing to buy the rest.

If you buy your clothes from Wal-Mart just buy new ones, unless you know someone who sews and owes you a favor. If you're buying designer clothes, cheaper to get them altered.

Guess it depends on how much your clothes cost to begin with and how long they'll last? If you bought good quality, more expensive clothes that will last ages and you'll wear lots then maybe get them refitted! If they were $5 shirts or something I'd just donate them and buy new ones :p maybe give a seamstress in your area a call and get a quote then decide! and congratulations needing to down-size your clothes :)

If the clothing is well made and you paid good money for them get them tailored...depends on how much you have to lose I guess, I had some things tailored and bought new stuff it was a mixture..the things I tailored were mainly items I really liked

I kept old jeans and some shirts that I am now able to fit in again, and I will be donating lots of old pants and cheap shirts to goodwill this weekend. It's a great feeling to be able to wear some of those sizes again, and it will feel better when I have to donate those too. I just don't want to jump the gun on buying clothes when I'm not done with my weight loss.

I would go by how attached you are to those items. I have a number of shirts I don't want to part with (yet), so I'm going to get my mom (very talented seamstress) to take them in for me! Yay for moms!

I agree with what others said. Some of my more expensive pieces I'd try to get refitted if possible...Otherwise I'm always looking for a good reason to shop.

I don't spend a lot on clothes so I've just bought all new stuff.. And only in my goal size.

I'll put up with some baggy clothes but I refuse to buy mid-sizes.. Its either my goal size or not at all :)

If you plan on losing more weight, just find some nice clothes at Marshalls or TJ Maxx. Even Target has some fairly priced deals. When I first started losing weight I told myself, every 10lbs I would reward myself with an outfit. Well, that worked for the first 20 lbs, then , I had to keep buying.

I usually just buy new cheap clothes. The only clothes I get altered are things I can't live without that I wont be able to find again. (Dresses, etc)

Either that or do you have like clothes swapping/buying/selling shop nearby?

I've seen them in some places.. pretty much you can trade your clothes for others which I thought in this situation would be a really good idea as a lot of my UK size 10 and 12 clothes are quite baggy but almost brand new.. And if i could jsut swap them for other clothes in size 8 then I'd be happy :)
  • Kohl's (if you have on nearby) has a "no questions asked" return policy. I brought back jeans I had shrunk out of and swapped them out for a new pair in a smaller size. They were proud to talk to me about other swaps people had made. I was shocked. Bringing back my husband's jeans and another pair of mine next week. Those Levi's were too expensive the first time to not get wear out of them. I assume that they get donated to charity. Start shopping there - I use my charge so they can always find the purchase on my record, but they might not even need a receipt.

I agree with the folks who said it depends on the quality of the clothes. Good things made to last are worth getting altered. Make sure the clothing can be altered without changing the hang or line of the garment.

I think if you really like the shirt (like the pattern, etc) it might be worth it.

Depends, if it's a suit, then refit it. If its normal clothes, I would buy a couple basics in a smaller size. Like pants and basic shirts.

For me as a woman, I just bought a couple pair of pants and capris in a smaller size (sz10). I didn't have any size 10 stuff. I have a wardrobe of size 8 and 6, so I don't need to buy any when I get to my goal.

It looks as though you're halfway though your weight loss, so I would suggest if you get new clothes to get them at a second hand store or a consignment shop or whatever.

Just remember that if get something tailored now, you'll just have to do it again in another 45 lbs.

I say get some intermediate clothes somewhere cheap for now and then when you get to your goal weight buy yourself some nice clothes that fit really well, this way you'll have motivation to stay at your goal weight and keep those nice clothes fitting properly

Would it make sense to buy a couple of really good shirts you can wear now that could later be worn as overshirts or jackets?

I know that money is an issue for many people (including myself), but I hate to buy cheaply made stuff. It always ends up depressing me. The fabric starts to pill after a couple of wearings, or the cut is weird in order to preserve fabric and it's more trouble than it's worth.

I would shop sales, and if you live near any vintage stores, I have a feeling that the men's clothes are less picked over than the women's.

The important thing is you're making yourself feel good now. I have a sister who's overweight and I've offered a couple of times to try to make her a simple shift dress or some skirts. She keeps saying she wants to wait until she loses more weight.

Congratulations on your weight loss. It must feel great to be contemplating the purchase of new clothes.

Thank you everyone for the great advise, and good luck to you all in what we are all trying to achieve.
  • I dont want to spend alot of money on clothes until i know im more or less at my own goal so ive been buying on Ebay.
My husband commented a few days ago on my lovely 'new' jeans i had on.....99p on Ebay i said !!!!! It means i can still wear nice, fitted things as i slim down without feeling like im going without. The only things i am buying new is my underwear...im so happy to be going down in bra sizes
