  • All I know is that when I stop drinking my wine, I lose weight. So, I try to be AF as much as possible, but I do slip now and then.
  • You've certainly had your hardships and it's amazing how strong you've been through them. You are a great lesson for all of us; not just for losing weight, but for the general "don't give up" theme of your journey. I'm so happy for you and very proud to have you as my friend in health.
  • My mini-goal is to get my weight down about 5-9 pounds again. I feel better with a little less weight. My back doesn't hurt as much, and it's much easier to run with less weight. And I feel more energetic. Hoping to reach this goal by the end of the year.
  • A Half Marathon in 2 weeks.... want to be just a couple of pounds lighter to make the run easier on this old body, lol.
  • It was for me too! I went 9 months without imbibing, but then the pandemic hit. I drink, but not as much as I used to. But some weight has crept back on so I think I need to reevaluate this. I'm going to see what a dry September will do for me.
  • You are so right! Although I still struggle with my own "certain number" on the scale, I have been focusing more on the idea of getting fit, avoiding injury and aging in a way that I can stay active (I'm old, lol). I'm 55 years old and I can't believe that after all these years I still deal with this. Hard to teach an old…
  • You are doing so well! Keep up the good discipline. Discipline is important especially on those days that we don't really have motivation. Disciple just makes us do it. I am friends with a woman on here that lost 100 lbs in a little more than a year. I became her friend on her first day and I have been so inspired by her…
  • 3107 days! Started in December 2011.
  • I did C25K when I was 46 (never a runner before that). Ran off and on for a few years on my own. A couple of years ago I joined a running training group called No Boundries at Fleet Feet and it has helped me so much. In the last 12 months I've run a 15k, and 4 half-marathons (I'm 54 now). I also still run with my Fleet…
  • I've been following the Target 100 program for about 7 months now. Among other things is to aim for 100g of carbs a day. I've lost 19 pounds. I'm almost at my goal weight (about 3 lbs away). I find it totally doable. You can have some grains sometimes, just count them in. I don't really like bread or rice that much, but I…
  • I've been alcohol free for 8 months now (except for 1 glass of wine on Christmas Eve and one glass on New Years Eve) and it's the best thing I've done. I've been on MFP for 8 years, but it wasn't until I made this major step that I started to lose real weight not the same 2-5 pounds over and over again. I'm not going to…
  • I've been AF for 210 days. I started with the Alcohol Experiment - 30 day challenge, then I just kept going. I bought and read Annie Grace's book (This Naked Mind) and it has reinforced my decision to remain AF for the foreseeable future. I'm also watching my carbs (loosely following Target 100) and with these too systems…
  • Oops, one more thing....I also have a standing desk at work (adjustable) so I can stand and sit at will. I also try to stand a bit when I'm watching TV. Sitting too long kills my back. That's why I'm not a big fan of going to the movies... sitting that long is murder on my back.
  • I also have degenerative disc disease in my low back. I finally, finally, after 7.5 years on MFP lost real weight (19 pounds) by following a lower carb program called Target 100...which, among other things, limits daily carbs to 100 grams, which is very doable. Losing the weight has really helped, but currently I am having…
  • Eating a banana a day has help me and my husband. I also take a magnesium supplement. I get terrible calf cramps Tell your husband to flex his foot backwards, NOT like he's pointing his toes. That helps stop the cramp. In the cold weather I've also been getting toe and arch cramps, so adding the magnesium really helped.…
  • I was like you. Now, I don't worry about being over on calories a little here and there. That whole "... in 5 weeks you'd weigh....." drives me nuts because I know I won't eat the same every day for 5 weeks. Some things that I do that have helped me considerably: 1. I don't count my exercise "calories burned" in the…
  • Hi, I'll be 54 next month. I lost 19 pounds in about the same time period that you are looking at. I've been on MFP for years, but I could never break through 152 pounds. I was always on the high end of "normal" BMI to low "overweight" BMI. What really did it for me was two things: I gave up alcohol (I've been alcohol free…
  • Woo-hoo! I had a "magic number" too and was so happy when I reached it!
  • I've started this challenge several weeks ago. I'm on week 4 but I've had to repeat a couple of weeks before moving on to the next one, lol.
  • I'm on Synthroid too, and it helps. Also, are you able to exercise in the morning? With the exception of my running group runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings, it's really hard for me to get motiviated to exercise in the evening. I've made a commitment to myself to at get in at least 30 minutes of exercise each morning,…
  • Ignore your hubby....my husband can be the same way. Just do it for you, not for anyone else. You can do it!
  • I've been AF for 35 days now. I'm following the Alcohol Experiment, it was a 30 day challenge but I'm continuing it for as long as I can. I don't drink much socially, but I'd drink a lot of wine at home (mostly weekends). Once I bought a bottle and opened it, I'd usually finish it in one night. Too much wine at one time.…
  • That's great! So sorry about your father, but your progress despite that is wonderful. Keep it going, one day at a time.
  • I haven't read all the comments, but I did want to tell you that as of today, I am 21 days alcohol-free (AF). I'm doing a 30 day challenge, called the Alchol Experiment. I was drinking too much wine, once I opened a bottle I'd drink the whole thing in one night. I didn't drink every day, but several days a week, espcially…

  • Give it time! A loss is a loss, no matter how small. Keep at it, drink plenty of water and make smart food choices. Don't fall into the trap of "..the hell with it".. You can do it, one day at a time.
  • That's great! Keep it up (or down, lol)!
  • I'm 53 years old and my kids are 21 and 14. I've been trying to lose the same 10 pounds for probably 10 years now, lol. I have just started following a plan called Target 100, which in a nutshell is to not eat more than 100g of carbs a day, drink 100 ounces of water a day, exercise 100 minutes a week and get in 100 minutes…
  • I use an App called Happy Scale. I put in my daily weight and it shows a rolling average loss so I can also see the trend. This way I don't get crazy about going up .1 one day.
